The OG Miso Cod
Lizzie Y.

I went here on one of the snowy days & arrived an hour before closing. Unfortunately when we arrived, they were running out of many items... yellowtail, tuna, salmon, snow crab, and scallop. Salmon + tuna are our favorite so we were debating right then if we wanted to just leave + find other food nearby. We ended up staying to try their miso butter cod, OG miso cod, & blue crab mentaiko. Both cod hand rolls were very delicious! We loved both! The OG miso cod was definitely more flavorful but I personally preferred the miso butter cod more because I loved just the simple butter flavor. The blue crab mentaiko tasted fresh & honestly exactly what we were expecting... very similar to other spots we've tried that had this. Overall, Matsunori Handroll Bar is worth the hype! Will definitely try to come here again, earlier in the day so we can try more rolls that weren't available.

I'll have to come back and do an update review. We did come late in the night, about an hour and change before closing time. When arriving we got seated at the bar, smaller space and it was still pretty busy when we arrived. Lots of two toppers. Our servers were all very nice, only thing was everything we seemed to want to order just kept no longer being in stock haha. No salmon no tuna no scallop etc. We were going to opt to leave but ended up wanting to try the miso butter cod, the OG miso cod and the blue crab. Now I personally liked the Miso Cod OG with the mustard seeds and i felt like a great fusion of flavors in one bite. The lady liked the miso butter style a bit better for the cleaner flavor profile: The blue crab was chunky grab meat, pretty much what we expected. It was on par with other establishments we've had it from. Overall i think the place is great! Just have to go earlier in the day perhaps a to try some of their tuna and salmon hand rolls (our favorite proteins). The cods were done beautifully tho! Worth stopping in!

An amazing experience from start to finish! Cute spot located in Fenway. It does have minimal seating and they only accept walk ins so we got there as soon as they opened to avoid a wait! We sat at the sushi bar to really soak in the experience and felt like they took great care of us! The chawanmushi was almost like a savory creme brûlée. Super soft steamed egg with a savory ikura gel. Super warm and yummy! My top three handrolls had to be the miso buttered cod(seriously don't skip it), the scallop and caviar (caviar is an additional add-on if you're feeling fancy and my god this melted in my mouth), and the toro mushroom! The price you pay is based off what you're looking to eat. You could spend $40 to $100 based on what you order! And we ordered the expensive stuff and thought it was worth trying! each handroll gives you about 3 bites based on how much they put into it. And their wasabi seemed super fresh too! Honestly this was the perfect date night spot for us! It was intimate, moderate noise levels and great service! Looking forward to returning as well as trying out their new sister restaurant!

Tuna and scallion

Came here as the first stop for a birthday celebration and it honestly didn't live up to a lot of the hype we had been hearing. We put our names in and ended up waiting about 45 minutes which wasn't too bad, and the virtual waiting list allowed us to see how close we were to the front of the line. The tables turned pretty quickly since it looked like a lot of people did what we did and ordered a few small things before heading somewhere else for more food because this is EXPENSIVE. Anything outside of the very basic handrolls is really pricey, and because they are handrolls with the right proportion of rice in them, they are not super filling. We ended up ordering: Tuna and scallion ($7.50) - this was pretty basic and the fish didn't really have that super fresh taste to it. It was a bit metallic tasting, and I think I've had better tuna at the Japanese market in town - it just didn't feel super special. Foie Gras and Apple Compote with garlic chips ($16.50) - I was really looking forward to this one, but this was also disappointing. The apple compote on this was just so sweet that the handroll tasted mostly of apple and sugar. For the price, I really wish the foie gras was more pronounced and the apple was less, but the apple was just so strong that it overpowered this roll entirely for me. Caviar ($19.50) - this was probably the best of the bunch, though I do not know if it is worth the price for something that's 3-4 very small bites large. Still, the caviar was creamy and salty, and there was a pretty good amount of filling in this one. For each of the handrolls, the seaweed was really good though. I never knew what people meant when they describe seaweed as "crispy" but now I understand and it's fantastic. I also enjoyed the fact that they portion the rice to filling really well so there is not too much rice, but it does end up being less filling that way. I'd have liked if it was a bit more affordable as well, but it was a very unique dining experience.

Had a great dinner here for my first time! No reservations, walk ins only, but it was not bad of a wait. We ordered a few rolls of salmon, a few rolls of tuna, salmon ikura, and eel. They had ran out of toro and uni that night which was unfortunate, but everything else tasted delicious! The hand rolls came out quickly once we ordered. The fish was fresh and had tons of flavor. I especially loved that the rolls held together so well. They didn't fall apart when you bite into them. Great spot overall!

We've been trying to come here for awhile and finally made it for a Sunday lunch! We ordered a bunch of hand rolls and they didn't disappoint. The fillings were substantial. Our favorites included the mango salmon, spicy tuna, and eel. They had a bunch of delicious cooked options as well (which was good for our 2.5 year old). Ann our server was amazing. She was super friendly, efficient, attentive, and gave us good recommendations.

Stopped by around 7:30 and there was a short wait of about 15 min and it was well worth the wait! They had us provide a phone number to join the waitlist and it showed where you were in the wait compared to other parties. The service was friendly and very attentive. We ordered the miso butter cod, spicy salmon, blue crab, spicy yellow tail, eel, spicy scallop, and a couple other rolls and they were all amazing and top notch. Our favorites were the miso butter cod, spicy salmon, and spicy scallop. I would definitely come back to get those rolls and try more on the menu. The atmosphere inside looks super cool especially near the bar but we were seated outside to avoid waiting. I'm already thinking of when I can go back to get another hand roll!!

Service and food were so good that I had to come out of Yelp retirement. Rolls were fresh and came out super fast. Our server, Tracy, was so nice and explained the menu to us, describing each roll in great detail... she made me want to order everything and made our dining experience great. Would definitely come back again!

Spicy tuna. Crunchy from the sweet potato flakes and not too much mayo. One of my fave bites from the night!

Truly one of the most fabulous spots in Boston. I came here with my BF a few months ago and then just came here again with my sister who was in town! This is a small restaurant tucked away on Beacon. They don't take reservations and only have a few tables/bar seats, but both times I went I was able to be seated quickly (granted, I went with only one other person and on weeknights). Now they have an outdoor patio for the summer, so I think that also increases capacity! They have a variety of different handrolls ranging in price from ~$6 up to $18 for the more speciality pieces. Honestly, I love the basic raw fish ones the best, from the lower priced-section of the menu. The salmon, spicy tuna, and yellowtail were sooo delectable. You get a good amount of fish in each roll, which is so fresh and you can just taste the quality. I also loved the salmon ikura, which was more mid-range price. My sister and I also got an edamame to share (loved the truffle flavor), so we were feeling pretty good after 4 rolls. The restaurant recommends getting 4-5 to start. Since we still had some room and were curious about some of the speciality rolls, we ended up ordering the OG miso cod and toro mushroom (split these between the two of us). I got the miso butter cod before and I definitely think I prefer the OG cod (the miso butter one was quite rich and a bit overpowering, IMO). The toro is REALLY good. Overall, I think this is such a fun place and you can customize it to your tastes/preferred price range. I would be happy going in and getting 4 of the most basic fish rolls, because I personally prefer the raw fish to the cooked rolls. Service is QUICK and you could be in and out within 30-45 minutes. I LOVE IT HERE!!!!

We went today and ordered so much. Salmon Cups Chawanmushi Miso Butter Cod A5 Wagyu Sea Urchin Mango Salmon Spicy Scallop Spicy Cucumber Botan Ebi Ikura Ankimo Jelly Lobster My friend loved their caviar and added it to pretty much everything. My absolute favorites were the lobster roll, chawanmushi and mango salmon. Stella was very kind and helpful. We came in really close to last call and she took the time to help us order quickly.

Matsunori delivers on high quality hand rolls that justify an often lengthy wait time. I would love to see a set menu in the future though. Food: All of the hand rolls were very tasty and really highlighted the fish with nice crisp seaweed and well-seasoned rice. The yellowtail was our favorite for its flavor and the texture added by the rice puffs. Though the others were also very good especially the miso cod, I wish more of the rolls had a texture element since most of the fish was minced. The only disappointed bite was the salmon cup. The cups the salmon was in were super dry making the whole bite really dry for a salmon cup. Service: The service was pleasant overall and we didn't feel too rushed despise the consistent long wait times. One issue I had was that the appetizer came out much slower than the rolls themselves and I wouldn't actually liked to have them as an appetizer. Additionally, I think a set menu would be great for people coming for the first time or an option you don't need to overthink. Atmosphere: It's quite a crowded place but it was still easy to have a conversation. The interior was clean and unintimidating.

Heard a lot about this place, and it lived up to the hype. Arrived 8:30pm on a Tuesday, and there was still a 45 minute wait since it's a small and popular place. Luckily there's other places nearby for a little snack before hand while you wait. Once seated, service was super attentive and observant. We tried a variety of handrolls including (in order of favorites) yellowtail, salmon, mango salmon, OG miso cod, eel, and blue crab. The fish was sooo fresh and tasty that I actually enjoyed some of the more pure fish handrolls the most. Each handroll is surprisingly filling but definitely shareable if you don't mind biting and sharing. I would definitely come again!

Matsunori was such a treat! Definitely on the more expensive side with rolls ranging from $8-11 the recommended portion being 4-5 rolls (i had 4 but left a bit hungry wanting more), but the flavors are fantastic and you can taste the fresh quality of the fish. I started with the spicy tuna, which was good and tasted like a classic spicy tuna. The second was a blue crab mentaiko, which was yummy but on the drier side. I then had the spicy scallop, which was probably my second favorite. But my favorite by far was the miso butter cod, it was so savory and the cod was butter soft. Service is super nice, helpful, and attentive throughout dining. It's a small space that feels like an omakase restaurant and they only take walk-ins, but on a weekday night it was still full but no wait.
