    Toro

The name is a spin on nori (Japanese for seaweed), but as soon as you walk in, the Latin influence is immediately clear. The music is Latin, and many of the drinks and bites infuse Latin flavors to create a blended experience. I visited the day after Nohri's soft opening, which gave me a very early glimpse into how the restaurant was doing. I had considered the tasting menu, but instead decided to opt for the individual handrolls to customize my experience. I knew I wanted the toro, and the server suggested the spicy tuna roll "hands down" so I had to try it, even knowing that meant I'd have two tuna handrolls. I was expecting the turnaround to be pretty quick, but alas, it was about 45 minutes before I got my two-bite order. The staff were quite apologetic, and even brought me chawanmushi (foie gras and uni) on the house. Alas, I couldn't have it due to dietary restrictions (shellfish), which they unfortunately hadn't checked for. With plenty of time on my hands, I had ample opportunity to take note of the ambiance. The counter spots helpfully have hooks for coats or bags, and there are also hooks in the book for a small number of coats along the wall. I was delighted with the compressed "magic" towels that expand from a tablet to single-use wet wipes--it felt incredibly Japanese! While I've been to several handroll bars around town, Nohri was unique in its presentation of the handrolls themselves. The server came with a box holding the pieces of nori along with tongs to pick it up, the better to keep the nori dry before ready to be consumed. Then the neta (filling) was served on a separate wooden apparatus (check out the pictures!) with a sliding piece. You're meant to slide out the filling, place the nori around it, and then carefully remove the wooden piece before taking a bite. It was quite an interesting experience. I'm not familiar with this particular apparatus, and I expect it would have been helpful to other patrons as well to include guidance on using it--either on the back side of the menu, or verbal instruction when served. The other issue I unfortunately experienced is that the filling can, at times, be a bit lopsided and unstable. The staff that brought out my food came in with a little too much speed, and the neta fell off the wooden holder. So after a 45 minute wait, they had to re-make my order. While the tool lends itself to an interesting experience, it perhaps should have been served on a larger plate or dish. Between the two handrolls, I preferred the toro. The fish was finely ground, which imparted a creamy texture, and the overall flavors were quite traditional. On the other hand, the spicy tuna was a clear product of fusion. The corn nut and pepper are quintessentially Peruvian, which in my view overpowered the handroll itself. For what I got--both in terms of the quantity of the food and the very slow service--Nohri was certainly overpriced, and they didn't provide any sort of concession (that I could actually make use of) for the inconveniences. However, I assume that this can be largely attributed to simple growing pains as they get on their feet, so I wouldn't mind visiting again in the future once they're more established.

Nohri, Boston... where do I even begin? Every single plate had me in a full blown love affair. That salmon with the Peruvian chili passion fruit sauce? Bright, punchy, and borderline addictive; I'm still thinking about it. And the uni handroll... the most seductive foam I've ever encountered, melting into that rich, briny perfection like it knew exactly what it was doing. But let's talk about that chawanmushi shall we, silky doesn't even begin to cover it. Add foie gras and uni and suddenly I'm questioning every other bite of food I've ever had. Unreal. And the nori (Nohri)? Perfectly crisp, the ultimate vehicle for delivering all that layered, umami packed goodness straight into my soul. Service was exceptional! Attentive without hovering, the kind that makes you feel like the entire experience was curated just for you. Every bite had me already craving the next. Nohri isn't just a meal, it's a full sensory seduction. Can't wait to visit them again and again and again...

Chawanmushi - A black ceramic cup containing a brown liquid, possibly tea or broth, placed on a dark surface with utensils and a napkin nearby.

I was lucky enough to be able to try Nohri out during the soft open because I know this place is going to be booked out. I really love it when hand roll spots have sets and the hand rolls overall were very substantial making the price tag feel worth it. The food and service did feel premium and well suited for a special occasion meal. Food: The Peruvian fusion flavors mixed very well with the selected fish and created combinations I haven't tasted before! My favorite bites were the Scallop Tiradito, Spicy Salmon, and the Confit Halibut. The scallops were such a refreshing starter that highlighted the sweetness of scallops. The salmon had a great lingering heat and the confit halibut was a welcome warm bite. Service: The serving staff was attentive through the meal and the chefs were super friendly and personable. Everyone was very knowledgeable on the flavors and the prep of the dishes. Atmosphere: The small seating space and the open kitchen creates a more intimate dining experience and really made me trust that the chefs would serve up good food.

Nice new-ish handroll spot in Chinatown where the ramen shop Ruckus used to be. They offer a 5 or 7 plate omakase which includes a cucumber salad, steamed egg and hand rolls. It's a small casual restaurant with tasty hand rolls served with brown rice and the nori served on the side in a box. The presentation was classy and chic, and the pricing wasn't bad. We got the recommended sake as well to go with the 7 course omakase and the rolls were delicious. Service was pretty good although our waiter was a bit busy, but she was very friendly. Would definitely come back!

Now let's talk food -- because Zaku lets you choose your own experience. If you want to keep it simple, grab some sushi. If you want to take it up a notch, go for sushi and combo plates. If you're in the mood for something hearty, the entrée options deliver. They also offer wine, beer, and other spirits, so you really get to decide how you want to take flight. We ordered a variety: orange chicken with rice, a combo platter filled with everything from edamame to octopus, and I enjoyed shrimp tempura maki with bibimbap (they kindly removed the beef for me), plus miso soup and a Sprite. Everything was flavorful and beautifully presented. The space is cozy yet lively, giving you room to relax and enjoy your meal. The menu is robust -- so many choices my guests had trouble deciding! Zaku gave great food, great service, and a great experience. I'll absolutely be back.
