No Relation was no exception. Attentive to dietary needs, enthused to teach us about the selection we were eating, and absolutely thrilled to share their craft we really enjoyed every bite. We chose to do the sake pairing and went with one Premium and one regular. In the end I particularly loved the premium sakes, they were so so clean, clear and spirit forward while the regular ones were a little softer and sweeter. All were smooth and intelligently paired. The atmosphere provides space to either dine in a more personal way, or to socialize with the rest of the folks dining at the area. We ended up in lively conversation with all of the folks at the table and enjoyed the community meal. Highly recommend with appreciation. read more

We came here for our first wedding anniversary in June while we were in Boston. We've never had an omakase experience and this set the bar pretty high for us. Being able to watch our courses be prepared while also being educated on where the fish came from and how it should taste was a great experience. We got to chat and ask questions if the chefs while also taking notes for feedback to pass along. There was tuna, salmon, uni, eel, wagyu, and caviar. I was so full at the end and so happy we got to interact with other people who showed up as there was only 9 of us and that makes it better imo. I've not had such fresh sushi before that I'm aware of and I loved being able to finally taste real wasabi. Our server was such a nice and caring person. We got some treats for it being our anniversary and the caviar on the ice cream with sesame oil shocked us entirely. I hope we get to go back one day. The intimacy of the experience is hard to describe but it's quiet and we didn't have cell service because we were underground a bit. That was fine. No phones to distract which made the night better. Excellent hidden/not so hidden gem. It's tucked in beyond Shore Leave and you have to reserve beforehand. It's a small counter area but the food, service and drinks are phenomenal. You go downstairs and check in with the Shore Leave hostess. They seat you right before service so if you show up early you can wait at the Shore Leave bar but they also have a special drink menu for No Relation patrons so you don't over sweeten your palate. The 2 sushi chefs were excellent at their craft. They were attentive to me being a lefty and swapped how they placed the nigiri in front of me. We came for my wife's birthday and we even got a complimentary glass of sparking wine and a small dessert with a birthday candle. The omakase is reasonably priced but it can quickly add up if you add supplements to your meal. Really enjoyed every piece , and I'm definitely willing to come back. read more

Oh nom nom nom indeed. This was my first omakase experience in Boston and it did not disappoint. Hell, I don't even need to try O Ya. I'd want to come back to No Relation (which, btw, you access through the Shore Leave host stand - once it's reservation time, you'll be led to the back). It's a 9-person seating, 14 courses. While it may not seem like a lot of food, I left very satiated and happy. My favorites: - Wagyu. The most umami mouthful. It's super rich and decadent, one bite was more than satisfying for me. - Shima Ali with uni. I'm a sucker for anything uni and the uni here was amazing, sourced from Hokkaido. - Tuna tartare. Loved the uni rice and nori that came with. You also have the option of supplements like caviar, truffle, and ikura. - Toro. You cannot go wrong with fatty tuna. Lots of garnishes and toppings on the nigiri - think lemon zest, black truffle, ginger, scallion. Giant party in my mouth with every piece. The only one that didn't quite work was the akami zuke, which had a touch too much wasabi for me (basically went straight up my nose). Incredible service from Alexey and the two sushi chefs. My husband and I went here for Valentine's Day and both cannot say enough about our meals. Everything is prepped in front of you and the staff are in the room with you telling you about everything you eat or drink. The room was intimate but never felt small, only 9 people per booking and only two bookings a night. All fish was fresh and the map on the all was labeled with where each of the fish were imported from. It was not cheap, but a great special occasion place. I have allergies to food and they took them very seriously. They also made accommodations for people who just didn't like certain things on the preset menu. Very tasty. Very fresh. read more

The best sushi experience we've had in Boston. It's definitely a splurge moment coming here, but it's perfect for special occasions. It's hidden in a private room in the back of Shore Leave, you're seated at the bar for a bit, and then when it's time for your reservation they bring you in. It was way cooler before COVID when the restaurant would be hopping and you felt like it was a secret ~behind the curtain~ thing. The fish is fresh, and the flavor profiles they create are just perfect. The menu is set, but at the end of the meal you can get a repeat of anything on the menu, plus a few special add on options. They have a pretty extensive drink menu, plus a sake pairing for the meal if you prefer that. Yes, the chefs are bit of salesmen with the big ticket add ons (like caviar or truffle), but you can pass on them without question/resistance. The dining area is super intimate, but you can just as easily keep to yourself as you can make friends at the table. The staff has always been friendly, attentive, and helpful when we go. I can only recommend you get there on time! They do their best to wait for everyone to be seated, so do yourself a favor and avoid making hangry people wait. The restaurant shares the same location as Shore Leave, and if you arrive early, you'll be asked to sit near the entrance of Shore Leave. The entire seating is brought to the back (where No Relation is located) at the same time. Pros: Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. (A lot of my photos came out blurry and I didn't label everything, so apologies for the lack of captions!) The $120 wine pairing includes VERY generous pours. You'll feel like you're chugging wine to keep up with each course! (This might only be fun if you're planning for a night out afterward.) The sake pairing is similarly generous with constant refills. A lot of thought went into where each person sat -- our menu also had a personalized "Happy Anniversary" header. Cons: $800+ adds up really quickly, and this is one of the first times I left hungry after omakase. If you want to spend even more, there are extra courses on the back of the menu that you can order. The main sushi chef was also a bit difficult to understand at times when he was introducing each course (but this had no impact on his skill or speed). read more

It's nine people surrounding the Omakase chefs which was a nice set up. Cuisine: Compared to other Omakase experiences, I definitely felt like you get less for your money and similar to what other reviewers mentioned, you are offered upgrades that should really be included for a 700+ dollar meal for two with drinks. The chef was definitely trying to sell upgrades hard, I agree with one of the reviews that said that. That being said, I really enjoyed some pieces like the integration of truffle and wasabi. The tuna tartar was delicious and was the only course that felt slightly more filling. I would definitely like to see the sashimi selections alternate with more substantial courses so that you do leave feeling like the price point makes sense. Absolutely amazing (my favorite) omakase restaurant in Boston, that is hidden within another restaurant (Shore Leave). About 14 courses, Chef Colin Lynch ("not related" to Barbara Lynch, hence the name of the restaurant), does not disappoint! 9 seats focused around the sushi counter, everyone has a great view of the chefs preparing all the food. Limited seating can make it a little hard to book a reservation (Open Table), but worth the wait (and price)!! The 14 courses included sushi, soup, and a handroll, with the option of add ons (caviar, ikura). All of the sushi was fresh, beautifully cut, and the unique flavors melt in your mouth. All had different flavor profiles, some were torched, some were served with uni, and some were simple and were topped with a sauce or wasabi. After all the main courses, you will be full, but you also have an option to add on additional courses (sushi), uni, or wagyu. They offer both a wine pairing and a sake pairing; I loved that if you do the sake pairing, you get to pick out your individual hand painted cup for the tasting. Very generous samples (and they will pour a second glass if you like one specific sake). I have been several times, and this restaurant is beyond consistent with the service and quality of the food. A superb Omakase experience in Boston. If you attend, the entry door was locked and eventually had to go ask the hostess at "Shore Leave" which is part of the place also. All the guests kind of hung out just beyond the Shore Leave patio waiting to be rounded up. Eventually, Alexei came to greet everyone and lead us all down into a basement area setup to host the event. Right now there are 2 seatings. I think a 6pm and an 830pm. The experience was definitely on par with other omakase experiences I've had in NY and SF. Service was great. And interacting with the chefs is an essential part of the experience. Like all omakase, the experience is curated for you. At the end you can select from other options to top off the meal. Highly recommend the Wagyu option at the end or the Uni option.... actually just get both. Drinks are extra but there's a modest selection of sake, wine and beer. You're likely to find something you like. Overall: Highly recommend the experience. If you haven't done omakase before, it's a dinner experience, that goes beyond the food ingredients themselves. My husband took me here for my bday dinner and we went all out. The 14 course included the sushi and 3 other other courses - steamed eggs with crab meat, cucumber lollipop, tuna tartare on uni rice. The service was impeccable, it was like watching a show when the chefs are making their creative and torching sushi in front of you. I was on a work trip to Boston and I thought I would treat myself to some nice sushi. I was having some expectation walking in, with this price point. However, I came out disappointed. Majority of the sushi are fire torched, and it was too much so many pieces are like half cooked. Imagine paying over $150 eating half cooked salmon and shrimp, they even torched a perfect looking piece of toro, I was too disappointed to take picture of that. 50% of the sushi tasted warm, and half cooked. the uni has a hint of bitterness to it. Like some other review said, they have "add on", which I was quite surprised as other omakase I went to, things were already included in the price. You feel a little pressure to get these add on as the chef was selling it hard. The night I went were two Chinese chefs (they were speaking a dialect I happened to understand), different than the chefs in some of the other reviews. Maybe that's why? They carry a reasonable amount of fish sourced right from Japan and some of our favorites that night were the chutoro, yellowtail, kohada and of course, the add-on option of otoro. Now many people have a certain fondness for a particular style of preparation so if you're not open to a little bit of creativity with the rice, you might find it a bit eccentric. They had varied recipes for the rice used for many of the nigiri. Me on the other hand, I love any preparation of sushi that melts in my mouth - period. So leaving it up to the chefs and being totally surprised and bewildered (in a good way) only adds to the experience. A great experience that spanned two hours and 14 courses of the freshest fish flavored with unique toppings such as crispy garlic, sea salt, lime and truffles. The rice here is also different and tasty as it is flavored with junmai vinegar. Don't worry, it's not actually brown rice, just brown in color from said vinegar. Chef Ricky is very knowledgeable and has been the chef de cuisine at a number of Boston restaurants. He was super friendly and answered all our questions. He even gave us some resto recommendations. The space is hidden behind Shore Leave and is very intimate. The decorations are clean and modern and the map behind the chefs shows where each fish is from. The numbers on the maps correspond to the course being served. This place is a great date spot. The limited seating also allowed for the people there to speak to other guests which is great, because we made some new friends by gushing to each other how good the uni was! Why not 5 stars? I wish there was a light dessert at the end. But beyond that I would def come back as the menu rotates depending on what is fresh/available. It's not a traditional omakase; the chef incorporates interesting twists on flavors and different types of sauces such as cherry blossom, brown sugar, yuzu, etc, so if you're looking for a simple traditional omakase this may not be what you're looking for. It was hard to find this place. Had to go inside another restaurant and ask about it. It was a restaurant located within a restaurant. I was walked to the back where this was a small intimate room for 9 people. Lighting wasn't bright but enough so that you can see everything- it was perfect lighting actually. The hostess name was Alex (I think). He presented the chefs to us and went around to each guest asking how they have heard about the restaurant. He also took our drink orders. Chef went around and asked about allergies and to his dismay, learned I do not consume eel. The experience was alright. The guests were very chatty (I dined alone) and so it wasn't exactly quiet in there. The place was clean. The chairs were low, below eye level with the chefs, in regular chairs, not stools. The sushi was for the most part good. The drink menu was extensive and included many non-Japanese drinks. I had the kimino ume-- delicious per usual. My experience was decent until my 6th piece of sushi. When I picked up that 6th piece my experience went into a downward spiral as the rice from the nigiri fell apart, into my hand, onto my table top and all over my menu. It was unexpected and shocking; Though it didn't sit right with me, I continued on to the next piece which did the same. This is when I began to feel uneasy. I've have MANY omakase experiences and this had NEVER happened to me before and it continued on to the next piece. The host came around and when I mentioned the hard time I was having he dismissed it by gesturing to other guests accompanied with the remark "no one else seems to be having that issue." I was now the one who was dismayed. I explained to him that I've never had this experience, which then brought me to the conclusion of the lack of experience, seriousness, and authenticity an omakase experience should provide as well as customer satisfaction. He then suggested I was grabbing the pieces to hard, and that I should use my chopsticks to lift the pieces from underneath to keep the rice together!!! I expressed to him that I had picked the pieces up differently each time in hopes that this nigiri wouldn't fall apart and continue to ruin my experience... soft, tighter squeeze, even used the chopstick technique he recommended... rice fell each time. Luckily, everything else was eaten with a spoon (and one hand-roll) there after. The only reason I gave three stars is because the chef was very nice, and I had the best piece of salmon I had ever tried in my life (it was from Norway)-- also, the creative tuna tartare was very pleasing despite the over salted caviar I chose as my supplemental topping. There was one piece (the second) and the scallop hand roll that tasted fishy (not what you should ever taste). I would not revisit nor risk the discredit of my taste by recommending this to others, especially those who love and admire omakase. read more

The best Omakase experience in Boston. It's an intimate private room in the back of Shore Leave so if you get there early you can grab tiki drinks before and take them with you. The seatings for No Relation are all at once so everyone gets the same courses delivered at the same time - makes the experience super fun as you enjoy the courses with strangers and the chefs give a detailed description of each course and answer any questions. You definitely learn a lot with the meal. Also, there's an enormous world map behind the tasting counter that shows where all the fish is sourced from for each course around the world. You have the option to add extras like Wagyu beef (highly recommend) and some other foods too. The sake pairing seems fun but you can also order an individual bottle of sake for cheaper instead. The waiters are super helpful and will tell you all about sake and help you pick the right one for you. read more

We held a private party at No Relations. I cannot overstate how excellent an experience it was from planning to execution. We had some very complicated issues with some people eating sushi, some people wanting to order off the menu of the sister restaurant Shore Leave, we had some of the sushi people with many food allergies . Basically, we could have been viewed as a pain in the neck to deal with, but the entire staff, including the manager Alexy, was wonderful. The food was superb and everyone had a wonderful evening. People will have different opinions of No Relation and I think it really depends on what you compare it against. Comparing No Relation to omakase places in NY or California you can say it is below your expectations. There are obviously more traditional ones with Japanese chef and higher quality ingredients in NY. But comparing to existing omakase places in Boston, it is actually not too bad. My coworker went on a Tuesday night and we booked a month in advance. I had to change reservation a week prior and the manager was nice enough to accommodate the change which is great. We had our meal a year ago at 95 dollars per person but it seems price has increased quite a bit. But at 95 it's really worth it. Paired with sake, I think the sushi tasted good, although a bit too much sauce and rice tasted vinegary. The rice came from an instant pot instead of making batches with bamboo or wooden materials. I haven't been back since because I do believe NY ones are better. But if you are dying for an traditional omakase in Boston, this is probably the best one to try. read more

Sometimes you go into a restaurant with high expectations and then you wish you had just stayed home and had ramen. This was one of those experiences where I'm over rating it two stars due to its hidden/underground location within a condo/apartment complex. Reservations are tough to come by and had high hopes. I know this isn't Japan. When the chef said their motto is to be laid back and not stern like in Japanese sushi restaurants but wanted to be chill with hip music and red leather pants I was sort of shocked. I almost wanted to say maybe they should focus more on the quality of the ingredients and food rather than ambiance. Plus they probably haven't experienced amazed customers who buy sake drinks for the chefs. On to the food.... The rice had too much vinegar. While one chef was detail oriented, the other was not. Inconsistent texture of the rice and nigiri, multiple versions of the same fish, and super over seasoned fattier fish. How do you mess up chotoro?? The uni (both versions) were bitter. The chef dropped ingredients and didn't notice. Too fast and not detail oriented. When asked to add caviar or truffles for $70 and $30 each - I was a hard pass. Oh and I was lucky enough to get a fish scale in my tuna tar tar. I wasn't mean enough to point it out but the server saw it on the side of the bowl and remained silent, go figure. Not enough quality ingredients nor courses given price. At this price point it's not a value and service was basically just upselling on additional dishes and sake. If you can't do the basics well, why would I pay you more for you to mess up more? I'd say this isn't worth going at all but you can make your own judgement. Covid was unkind to many restaurants. Ada recommended us some sake pairings to go with our meal. we settled for the cherry blossom one which was light and floral. i also got a couple birthday splashes of the happy bride sake, which im obsessed with now. lightly sweet, tart, and so clean and smooth this sake was my favorite of the two. obviously the sushi was freshly sourced and the flavors were bussin. i don't remember the names of each course because i forgot to take the menu home, but my favorites were the masu, kamasu, toro, and chawanmushi. if i could eat everything again once more i would! all the staff were super knowledgeable and helpful since it was our first time doing omakase. i even got a complimentary birthday nigiri from chef! and the biggest thing left i have to say is thank you to my boyfriend for giving me such a special and memorable experience. this was so awesome!!!!! read more
