The hostess with the mostest Bianca greeted us at the door and took us on a little tour of the place including the sushi restaurant downstairs. So friendly and attentive! She even gave us a keepsake postcard to remind us of our good times at Temple Records! Kevin our server was super helpful answering our questions about the menu and checking on us frequently to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. He also asked about allergies and let us know which menu items were either safe or could be modified for us, which we super appreciated! Ambiance 5/5: dim lighting, excellent music dj'd by the bartenders, cool decor of records, posters, collectibles from the owner's home. The main bathroom has a Japanese Toto toilet with a heated seat! Drinks 5/5: we ordered the Delirious, the Akai Barchetta, and the Chan Chan. My favorite was the Akai Barchetta which was their version of a Negroni. Smooth! Food 5/5: we ordered the pork belly cabbage wraps with kimchi (which they offered us vegan style), the unaQ maki (eel sushi), and the hamachi maki--sooo fresh! I prefer pork belly a bit fried for crispy texture but all the flavors were superb! Half the food menu is from the sushi restaurant downstairs and half from Somaek next door so you have some excellent Japanese/ Korean options (small bites)! Sushi at Temple Records is hard to find, but the best discovery for a sushi lover in Boston. The street level looks like a typical American bar, but the basement looks Japanese (only bigger). Finally a great collection of less common fish. I mean: Kohara, Sawara, Saba, Ma-Aji etc. Much is imported from Japan - Kohada from Kyushu and hotate from Hokkaido. Kappo preparation at Ginza kaiseki grade and prices! No, you don't need the soy sauce dish! Every piece comes appropriately seasoned somewhere in the middle between Kansai and Kanto. I came here for an omakase, but also ordered some food at the bar upstairs while waiting for the omakase to start. I liked the decor upstairs. Felt very alternative. The clientele leaned on the older side. At the bar I got a peanut appetizer. I was unimpressed by the peanuts, and I was hoping the omakase downstairs would turn my opinion around since I love sushi. Nope. The only impressive part of the omakase was the uni for being so sweet. Everything else was underwhelming. The wait staff jumped at every opportunity to move plates and talk to customers while standing against the wall behind me felt overbearing. After seeing mixed reviews online I wasn't sure what to expect but ended up loving my experience! I ate downstairs at the sushi bar which I believe is different than the cocktail bar area upstairs. The wait staff was super helpful with explaining the menu and we had sake, several rolls, and some nigiri. The nigiri was around $15-20 per piece but was amazing. Rolls were less expensive and just as tasty. Unless you're looking to spend $100 per person I wouldn't recommend coming here aiming to leave stuffed but I would absolutely recommend it as a nice place to get very high quality seafood and sample a traditional Japanese menu. This is based on Temple Records first omakase event. On 1/15/25 The food was fantastic with a great fusion of Korean influences in flavors. For $120 there were about 14 times serving consisting of high quality nigiri , sashimi, banchan, owan ect.. and everything was high quality, fresh, and delicious. The value was incredible. The seating area itself was in the lower level of the main dining area , which was both spacious intimate at the same time. The sushi counter is hugeeee and can sit around 20 people. The ambiance was very lively. They were pumping out Korean jazz type music which was really fun. Only suggestion I would make to the restaurant is to lower the volume when explaining dishes in these kind of events. But ordinary this probably isn't an issue. Service is also super friendly and knowledgeable I will 100 percent be coming again for the regular menu if the experience is indictive of the quality and flavors they usually serve. read more

Lets get to the point, This one isn't gonna make it.... send sealed and delivered which is a shame because at least the bar has a nice theme which it doesn't quite all in on, but I like the suggestion of the post-war Japanese vibe. The restaurant though is pretty bad and really without redeeming qualities. Lets review it in two parts, first the restaurant So lets start with the bad, which is like extensive -The chief I hear is from the Hawaii area, starting out new to the area. Didn't say hi or pretend to engage my group at all on the sushi counter, which is very odd. At almost every other sushi counters the chief has always been polite and inviting, its part of show and experience. -His assistance sushi makers? are pretty sloppy, not their fault, they looked super young and inexperienced. The rice came out sloppy, broke awake from the nigari piece, hard textured...my rice cooker could do a much better job on the quick cook setting. Not soft, not tasty, the vinegar was uneven. Just bad. You'd have to blame the chief as that's his domain -The fish was poorly cut, fresh I suppose, small in portion, but untasty. At this price point, 10-15 for a single piece, you have a number of places in boston to look at for something much better, shameful really. -Had a couple tuna pieces that are quite frankly terrible, -One of the ebi was like a cocktail shrimp from Shaws or Market Basket -The soup they made was extremely disappointing -I can rattle of probably 10-15 places at 50-70% of the price point where you'd eat better, super disappointed as looking for something new to Boston but this aint it The service was pretty bad, can easily tell the crew was inexperienced, didn't know their own menu, and quite lack luster in intuition and perception of our needs. Wet nap went uncollected, tea went unfilled, and sake slowly poured, not necessarily the staffs fault but at this price point you expect something quite a bit more. Regarding the upstairs bar -good vibe, good space and good bar area -I love the crystal clear ice but I know thats probably not everyone's thing -Cocktails were decent and premiumuly priced, - Again disappointed at the poor execution especially on the food front on this place. Ate here over the weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday. The sushi was good (mainly ordered the maki because that's the only reasonably priced sushi on the menu- the nigiri prices are indeed for one piece) but we felt like the experience at this restaurant was definitely not worth the price and what we assumed would be a "fancier restaurant". There were 2 sushi chefs for the maybe max 14 seats around the sushi bar and any sushi made was made at an extremely glacial pace. We had already waited a long time for our first round of 5 rolls but then when we ordered 2 more rolls we were sitting around for about 25 minutes before being approached by the waitress asking if we were waiting for something. She had forgotten we had directly ordered 2 more rolls from her and likely didn't put the orders in. We asked to cancel the 2 more rolls if the sushi chefs had not already started on them as we had to be somewhere and had already spent 1.5 hours here mainly in the process of waiting because it doesn't take much time to eat the rolls once they'd been served. The owner brought the check and just said sorry and then the waitress said sorry there was a kitchen miscommunication. I just feel that going to this restaurant was a waste of time and not worth it. Also if you are seated at one end of the bar at the bottom of the stairs there will constantly be people from the upstairs restaurant using the bathroom directly behind you or there will be people the owner is periodically showing off the sushi basement to. read more

Service was just as good: attentive but not overbearing, casual but informative. The cocktails were balanced and intriguing. Pricey, but aren't they all? All-around it's a great restaurant. BUT, it was beyond loud. I expect restaurants to be loud, I accept that, but this was painfully and prohibitively loud. They kept cranking up the music, which in turn led everyone to yell across their tables. So if the music wasn't overwhelming, other diners sure were. We would have stayed for another round (or 2) of cocktails but couldn't stand the noise anymore so went elsewhere for equally expensive, far LESS delicious cocktails down the street.
