We ordered the sashimi platter, several crudo dishes, tempura shrimp, miso cod, skirt steak, tuna tartare, calamari, rock shrimp, and finished with two desserts. The menu is tapas style and makes it easy to try multiple things and share with others. I went there alone -- was in the area for a conference -- and still had an easy time trying multiple things without it being too much food. We waited a long time, over one hour 20 min. We ate other foods, but no sushi. Lots of excuses from the wait staff- still no sushi. Upon approaching wait staff, I said I'm not paying for something that never came. Again lots of excuses, the kitchen, the servers... I don't care! It was frustrating given tables around us were seated, ate, and left long before us despite getting similar amounts of food. We were seated around 12:30, left almost at 3 - way too long! I've been here twice now. The 1st experience was definitely a 4 star review. The latest visit was with a larger group and didn't live up to the expectations from the initial visit. Both were on Saturdays, so although it is big inside, it was very packed. With the larger group, the service seemed extra slow! I waited a while before receiving a glass of wine, while others were receiving their food. Entrees were coming out before apps or accompaniments of the dish, such as rice. I also didn't like how each time a dish was brought out, the server would place it at the center of the table and start explaining to everyone what it was. Each time, I'd have to reach in the center of the table to drag the heavy dish to me, but by the time I could do so, the entire table now wants to try my dish, which weren't family style AT ALL. I didn't understand that because when going around the table taking folks orders, you know what THEY personally asked for, same with the drinks that did get placed in front of their respective customer. The black cod is really tasty, as well as their wagyu gyozas. I also enjoyed the spicy fried tofu salad (not sure why the word spicy is included in the title) and their selection of sushi. I tried many different rolls and they all hit! I found the broccolini and the mushrooms to be too salty. I also didn't care for the potatoes, which I found to be hard and bland. Once in a while, you visit a restaurant that really stands out as something special. Zuma is one of those places, on the second floor of the Four Seasons building on Dalton Street. Zuma is a very upscale Japanese restaurant with three kitchens and an izakaya concept, where customers can order many small plates and share everything. There are hearty entrees available, but if you want sides those are a separate order, like the nice broccolini we got. The good sized interior is like being in another country or somewhere in New York, modern and sleek but overall earthy with much of the space being made of and decorated with wood. They could have included a bowl of rice at least, but the food tasted amazing. 10 oz prime skirt steak with shish chimichurri sauce, which I haven't had before was a wonderful addition with the fantastic, tender steak slices. I also had an equally great beef skewer with shishito pepper and smoked chili soy. We also shared a wonderful lava cake with ice cream and then a great decaf cappuccino with extra foam milk. The service was great and our waitress was very knowledgeable about the place as we asked questions. My most recent visit at Zuma Boston was for a birthday dinner, in which we booked a private event in the back! The staff prepped everything to perfection and were constantly bringing out more food. Some of the food that we had, include: -yakitori -wagyu tartare -grilled scallops -salmon & tuna tartare These dishes were served as hors d'oeuvres and were all very tasty. For maki rolls, we ordered 3 rounds of all the makis offered on their menu. The sake no aburi roll was my favorite! The maki rolls at Zuma are on the simpler side and are more basic rolls, but nevertheless, still very fresh. We also had mixed drinks that were constantly coming out, in which the raspberry & passionfruit martini was my favorite! Definitely one of my favorite drinks from Zuma ever. Overall, the birthday event went smoothly and the staff was very accommodating! Whenever we were in need of anything like more drinks or more food, everything was prepared and served within minutes. Had a fantastic time celebrating my graduation & partner's job promotion at Zuma. I booked a reservation a few days in advance. We stopped at Trifecta below for a few drinks before we headed to Zuma. By the time we got to Zuma, it was completely packed. There was a DJ playing, countless tables of large parties & a busy bar. I told the waitress I was allergic to crustacean and she told me nothing on the premium omakase menu contained crustacean. We opted for the premium omakase and it was such a good choice. We started with the sliced seabass sashimi, which was a nice palate cleanser. It was topped well with the salmon roe which helped give it a salty and nutty flavor. The wagyu gyoza came next and my partner said it was one of the best things on the menu! We then had the salmon and tuna tartare topped with caviar, which is a staple at any fine dining restaurant. The fish was very fresh! The chu toro tartare topped with truffle wasn't as delectable. Our favorite small bite might've been the seared scallops! We had been watching too many cooking shows and was really craving scallops and Zumq didn't disappoint! We would go back just for them. The rolls and nigiri came out next and they were all tasty! The entrees came out and we were pretty full by then. The ribeye, adorned with truffle, was a great "turf", while the miso cod provided a delicious "surf". We were too full to eat the mushroom risotto, but had a few bites. Overall, we had a great time at Zuma. We were there until closing, so around a total of 3 hours. Haven't written review for a while but I recently went to Zuma for my own birthday dinner and I loved it!! Me and my friends had an incredible experience here. This restaurant is located in back bay around Prudential are so finding street parking was very hard. It is best to opt for garage parking as there are many options available. The restaurant itself is located inside the Four Seasons Hotel. As soon as you arrive you are greeted at the door by friendly staff who open the door for you and lead you up the stairs to where the restaurant is located. We were immediately seated by our hostess. I want to note that is very important to make a reservation for this restaurant as they are always very booked and the restaurant itself was very packed. The atmosphere and ambiance were great. There is live music next to bar section of the restaurant and multiple people were having fun and dancing. Unfortunately, me and my friends did not go there for drinks but for the food which is what this review is all about. Their menu I would say is very extensive and it has a ton of great food options. For started we decided to opt for their sushi maki, gyoza and chicken skewers. The sushi was so fresh and delicious. The flavors were melting on my tongue (seriously!). The chicken skewer was very flavorful as well as the fried gyoza. The star dish of the night was definitely their salmon. It was absolutely incredible, the sauce paring was on point. They cooked it perfectly as I requested it to be medium well. Overall my birthday dinner at Zuma was amazing. They were incredibly accommodating to our time needs, and the food was brought out quickly but never with making us feel rushed. Our server was soooo good at her job, I think her name was Hang. She got us started with the lychee+rose and raspberry+passionfruit martinis - both delicious. I had made a Friday evening reservation for four to celebrate a group of friend's recent promotions and achievements. It was easy to make a reservation online. I have to warn you, there is a hefty penalty for not showing up, be sure to cancel or reschedule by the deadline or face a premium fee. My group of four arrived right at opening for our early dinner reservation. We were seated promptly by the hostess. We opted for the premium omakase experience since we couldn't decide what to order. With omakase, we leave it to the chef, as this is a set chef decided menu. Zuma's premium omakase came with a lot of savory dishes that can easily fill you up quickly. Examples would be the two types of dumplings, which were served early on. Later in the meal, there is also steak, a truffle risotto, and corn on a cob. I feel like those four alone could have been my dinner but there were maybe 10 more dishes. Some of the girls in the group were pretty full around the 8th item but the dishes kept coming out one after the other. I enjoyed every dish. Again, I feel like this omakase experience had a lot of buttery and filling items. I would have liked for a lighter menu. I definitely did not leave hungry. In fact, I could barely finish the dessert, which was the highlight of the meal. It was so beautifully presented. There were many exotic fruits such as passion fruit and dragon fruit. Best contemporary Japanese food in the Back Bay Area-- Zuma offers an immensely enjoyable fine dining experience. Prepare to spend about 2-3 hours here for an incredible 4 course meal, worth 5 stars. My mom and I both opted for the 4oz spicy beef tenderloin and my mom's boyfriend got the salmon. The beef tenderloin came with red pepper flakes, sesame seeds, and a soy-chili sauce. Cooked medium well was the way to go. It was so juicy. Had we not had been so full from the other courses, I would have finished my mom's off as well. 20/10 rating in my book. My mom's boyfriend reported that his salmon was incredible, and the crust was fantastic. Food (Dessert, 4): We started off with complimentary shots-- we got the virgin berry shot and espresso martini shots, both very good! The berry one reminded me of a fancy strawberry popsicle. The food/sushi was so mediocre it's crazy for the price that they serve it at. The maki rolls that they have at the end of the menu are like $20+ but literally taste like supermarket maki roll quality. You will be unbelievably disappointed if you order them. It was $400 for two people, trust me when I suggest to spend that money elsewhere.
