Not too long ago I visited lola 42 with my wife for dinner after seeing it on social media. We made a reservation which was very useful since there were tons of people waiting and standing at the bar. We were placed in the back corner which was nice since there were so many young professionals at the bar. (Sometimes getting a bit too close and crowding the area). Still able to hear and talk luckily. Waiter was fabulous with good recommendations and fairly consistent check ins during the meal. Food itself was very delicious. We tried a number of the menu items and all were well made and had really good flavor. I really enjoyed my pasta and their fries which I had heard good things about. Overall a really nice spot, a bit loud and crowded due to our proximity to the bar, but great food, music, and atmosphere. Would definitely recommend and return! read more

Pretty sure I got mild food poisoning. I'm still battling from last night sushi. It tasted OK, but it wasn't anything special. I absolutely could not stand the club music that was playing so loudly. I could barely hear the person I was talking to, I don't understand with all of the reviews that mention the music why they haven't changed it yet you need to lower it so that people can talk to each other. There are plenty of young people out there going to your restaurant, but older people not even much older just older than 30 would like to be able to hear each other talk.. I liked our server. He was nice and did a good job, but you're not giving him a fighting chance with audio discomfort. I could barely hear the server.. they even moved us to a different table where it was slightly less noisy, and it was still too loud, to be frank. We almost left because of the noise. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner at Lola 42! We started with the poke nachos and the crab Rangoon, plus the Puddle Jumper cocktail for my boyfriend. All were terrific. I loved that the nachos came with both tuna and salmon--super generous portions, and honestly the best poke nachos I've had on the East Coast. The crab Rangoon were also delicious: light, flavorful, and paired with an addictive dipping sauce. For mains, I ordered the salmon lo mein and my boyfriend had the beef bulgogi. Both dishes came with the same noodles and were good, hearty portions, though nothing mind-blowing. Definitely on the very expensive side for what they are. Fair warning: the beef bulgogi is very spicy. For dessert, we shared the Basque cheesecake. The real standout, though, was the pistachio gelato with lemon curd that came with it. Everything was delish! the vibe was nice. it was dark inside with dim lighting at your table. Music is playing. They have these very long curtain drapes to separate the area around the bar which I thought was really cool. I would def go back for a date night. Our waitress was was very helpful and nice. I had a great dinner here! The patio is so cute and has a great sunset view. I got the TKO cocktail to drink and it was delicious and beautifully garnished with a flower. I'm not sure about this place; the venue was packed with people and super super loud, with club music blaring from speakers all around the space. Was this a restaurant, or a nightclub? Or a restaurant trying to be a nightclub! And it was so dark, it's hard to see the food. I think I burned off half my phone lightbulb reading the menu and trying to see the food. The chirashi roll had a decent texture; unfortunately the fish overall wasn't very flavorful, and neither was the rice. The texture on the rice was mostly okay, but also not flavorful enough, and not enough vinegar in the sushi rice. The salmon roe on top of this roll was really good, perhaps the one saving grace on the dish. The yuzu flavor was nice and provided some freshness to the bite, but the avocado was not as fresh as it should have been. The crab cakes were decent, but maybe a bit salty, and the outsides of the crab cake were too flat and not textured enough on the fried bits. The inside seemed somewhat mushy, despite the fact that there seemed to be enough crab in the inner fillings. The scallop sashimi was again decently textured, but I couldn't actually taste any seafood flavor in the sashimi. The Spanish garlic shrimp was one of the better dishes on the menu; the shrimp had a nice bouncy bite to it, and while again the flavor was somewhat lacking, the cook on the shrimp seemed quite decent. The chopped salad was also quite good, with a mix of different textures and an interesting dressing to go along with it. The chickpea, cucumber, and onion provided a nice respite to the romaine lettuce, a lot of which was prepped really well (small bites, appropriate to the size of the other elements). The Cap'n Jose sushi roll had some decent, but also some lacking elements; the salmon was supposed to be spicy, but it definitely wasn't spicy at all; in fact it was hardly distinguishable from the salmon that lay on top of the roll. The kiwi was an interesting choice, and the black tobiko that lay in the middle of the kiwi slice worked really nicely as it looked like kiwi seeds! The flavoring on the tobiko was strong too. The sesame aji mirin aioli was interesting as a concept, but it was hard to taste the sesame. The star of the meal was the dessert: basque cheesecake (idiazabal cheese, butter crumb, lemon, pistachio gelato) with a variety of textures and flavors to delight the palate. The cheesecake was baked so that it wasn't utterly too dense, the butter crumb and lemon were nicely textured to contrast the softness of the cheesecake, and pistachio gelato was neat because it contained a crunchy interior with a ice cream exterior. Not quite sure how they managed that. The service was also really stellar; the server kept asking if we needed stuff, was helpful and friendly and clear regarding specials of the day, and other servers kept replenishing water. Prices are high for what you're eating; but perhaps it's really to cover the nightclubby atmosphere! But hey maybe I'm not the target clientele as the place was packed. read more

When a local foodie, who I really respect, tells you that LoLa 42 serves Boston's best sushi, you follow up. Can't say if it's the best, but it made for a most satisfying lunch on a Saturday. Our server who was also the bartender, mixes up some very creative craft cocktails. For starters, time for sushi. The Hola Sake and Snowy Mountainn rolls were delish. Since I was on a sushi mission, I ordered the Sushi Bistro Box. With its small containers for different entrees, it packs lots of flavors and textures. This and the Bistro Bemto allow you to sample many items on the menu. As I shared before, they serve great cocktails, but at $20 a piece, that adds up, even at lunch. I had a reservation at Lola 42 on a Friday night during graduation season, we walked through the curtains in the front to an expansive dining room with a great view of the water. Our party of 2 was seated at the sushi bar and after several minutes we noticed an off-putting odor, similar to that of a public restroom. It wasn't bad enough to ask for a change of seating but it did hinder our experience slightly. Our waiter introduced herself and took our drink order, I settled on a refreshing craft beer from Japan that was light and crisp. There was a wide variety of pan-asian dishes, elevated American classics and sushi options but we decided on sharing a few appetizers and sushi rolls. The first things that appeared was the toro tartare, which was served in a sesame cannoli shell and it was a great bite. Next came the poke nachos, which was four large wonton chips that was topped with tuna, avocado crema, eel sauce and greens. Both appetizers were tasty but we felt that the value wasn't there for either. TLDR: This restaurant is better and more expensive than Fuji. The poke nachos are UNBELIEVABLE, to start with a positive. I'm not a full time, long-time Boston resident, and while I love Seaport and think it's an absolutely utopian neighborhood, there is a stereotype about its residents that manifests in LoLa 42. I first thought 'how could a restaurant with such a good looking food have 3 1/2 stars on yelp?' I decided to set my expectations high and figured that, as they sometimes are, the Yelpers were being too harsh. Firstly, the ambiance: the music was so loud I almost asked for an extra napkin to wipe the blood out of my ears. If you search for "music" in the yelp review search bar, you'll get copious amounts of reviews with people complaining how loud the music is from ages ago. No clue how nothing was ever changed. Immensely puzzling. The food was good, not great. Lacking flavor which I know is arbitrary but there's really no way to explain it. I've never tasted sushi that tasted like nothing at all, but now I have, thanks to the Anata roll. I find it weird that there's phonetic pronunciations of each of the rolls on the menu. I've never seen this before, and I don't understand why a 5 letter, two syllable word needs pronunciation instructions. Maybe it's because the music is so loud that the waiters need you to annunciate better? Who knows. Anyway, the chirashi roll was delicious. So were the ribs, succulent and flavorful. The lettuce wraps were hard to eat. Instead of using ground chicken and spooning sauce into the lettuce wrap, which falls out easily, some culinary training would suggest instead first tossing the chicken in sauce to keep everything together. The basque cheesecake was really nice and fluffy. The lemon curd is unnecessary. I liked the menu, it was well thought-out on the Asian side. The whole '42' schtick that the waiters do is cheesy, and I would prefer if it was just on the menu. Furthermore, I dont care if you have 2 kitchens. It's odd seeing bolognese and sushi on the same menu. I get these sort of 'identity crisis' vibes from LoLa because of this. read more

I asked for a little less ice on second drink (expecting to get a bigger drink) and my drink was filled about a quarter of the way. What kind of bartender does that?! This spot is such a vibe! Right near the water and tons of other places, this was the perfect spot for dinner. We had originally made reservations for 9 pm because that's all they had. But, they called us the day of the reservation and said they had some openings so we moved up the reservation. I loved this! Made us think that they cared about us and our reservation. We sat at a high top in the bar area, which was right up my alley. The music was on point, lights were dimmed, trendy restaurant and menu looked delicious right off the bat. I started with a margarita and my friend got the hibiscus blueberry margarita. Both were very strong. They came out fast, so props to the waitress and bartender on this. For dinner, I got the rainbow roll. It was pricey, but it was very good. Also, service came out very fast. It tasted very fresh, which I always appreciate. Lola 42 is a gorgeous restaurant walking distance to the Boston Harbor. Inside is beautifully decorated and the outside patio overlooks the water. The staff was so friendly and sweet and the menu was really fun! Some of the highlights from the menu that are different from anything I've ever seen were the Poke Nachos and the Ahi Tuna Burger. I was going for a simple lunch so I went with a edamame and sushi. The edamame was warm and had huge chunks of salt. The shrimp tempura came in spicy or sweet and I decided to do half-and-half.
