I have been living in the Bensonhurst area for so long and have been going to either Manhattan or Queens for my Peruvian fix, always thinking that there was no proper representative of this ethnic food anywhere within easy driving distance. The few I did know of was laughable. If only I knew about this place earlier, I would have saved myself many gallons of gas and dozens of hours of driving over the years. This is the real deal.
Located at Bath Avenue across from a police station, this area isn't exactly brimming with quality restaurants so it's easy to understand how so many people, myself included, would have overlooked this place. It's a small unassuming restaurant when looking at the store front.
Walking in, you'll see a very clean restaurant that you wouldn't mind bringing a date to, Peruvian music softly playing in the background. The service is very pleasantly attentive without being intrusive. We were given as much time as we needed to order and once we got our food, our waitress came back a few times to inquire how everything was going and asking if we needed anything but quickly withdrew as soon as she knew we were good.
The Peruvian food was as good as some of the best that I've tasted thus far in NYC and the prices are very reasonable. When they list grilled hearts as an appetizer, you know this place is not pandering to just the Americanized palate.
We started out with an appetizer that is not part of their take out menu but is in their dine in menu for $7. LECHE DE TIGRE, Translated as "Tigers Milk", they claimed this is one of their most requested appetizers. It comes in a cocktail glass with one shrimp hanging on the side, and a slices of raw fish that was cooked in a bath of acidic citrus juices topped with. Basically it's a ceviche with only fish slices and no other seafood besides the lone shrimp. Tangy, very sour, and delicious, it's a good way to jump start your appetite for the main meal. You could order this mild or spicy.
We had two orders of the half Chicken combinations. For only $8, it came with a choice of french fries and salad or yellow rice and beans. We ordered one of each combo. The chicken was moist and flavorful. It goes well with the provided green sauce which is typical of all Peruvian Chickens but this place also provides a mild mustard like sauce that I have not seen given out at any other Peruvian restaurant before. I still prefer it with the classic green sauce. The sides of yellow rice was well made, the fries was good, and the salad and beans are decent in a very basic simple way.
This place deserves more recognition on Yelp.
