Pio Pio this is not. I gave this place the benefit of the doubt even though almost every review on here warns of sub-mediocre food at best. I'll start with the spinach empanadas - the only semi-decent food item we received, and didn't have to "doctor" in some way. The filling was actually quite good, but the dough was bizarrely sweet - almost like a sweet bun filled with spinach - and sort of ruined the whole empanada. I ended up scooping out and eating the filling, and giving the bun to my dog. Their "rice and beans" is literally steamed white rice with no seasoning, with boiled salted black beans - again with no seasoning. In my many years of eating (and always really enjoying) Peruvian food, I've never had a more bland, thoughtless, rice and beans order. Google "tacu tacu" for references of what Peruvian rice & beans done right, should look like. Still, it was edible - especially after adding the salsa verde they threw in the bag (though I'm still unsure what food item that was meant for) a little of my own sofrito. Sadly, my mother's order couldn't be "fixed" in any way. Upon reading the reviews of how dry the chicken is, my mother decided to get 2 orders of the 1/4 rotisserie dark meat combo. She says it was the driest chicken - especially for dark meat - that she can recall EVER having. I have no clue how this place gets business, especially since the best Peruvian restaurant in all of Bensonhurst/Bath Beach is literally just a few blocks away. Opt for La Chacra on Bath Ave instead. Far better. Another great option, though a little further, is Sabor Andino on 14th Ave. If you've in a situation where you're unable to go farther than a 3 block radius, just opt for something else. read more

I haven't really tried many paella dishes but the paella here is heavenly! I ordered takeout and the paella can take some time to cook. The rice was jam packed with seafood flavor and it was not too acidic. They are also quite generous with the seafood meat! I docked 1 star because of the chicken rice. Who would of thought there is actual authentic Peruvian food on 18th Ave. Brooklyn. I was surprised to see this shop. At the time few customers were inside which is a bad sign but saw that Yelp recommends it. Seems they have a big take out delivery clientele which makes for sparse customers in the store. The food though is authentic and spot on and reminded me of my travels to Peru. They even have chicha and inca cola drinks which i've only seen in peru. Go to dishes for sure are the half roast chicken with yellow rice and black beans. The chicken is succulent juicy and tender with nice roasted skin. The pork chops are big portions and tender. The platanos were sweet and fried up but a bit too oily. I'm also a big fan of peruvian green sauce. This one did have the spicey kick i remember but can tend to be a bit salty for some folks taste. I thought it was super salty but with the chicken and rice brings down the sodium. Noticed they have chifa as well which is peruvian style chinese fried rice. So authentic and will definitley try this next time. Service was good for both take out and sit in and prices were affordable. Great spot for the store i'll be back for more. read more

Definitely not the "best chicken" in NYC. However El Pollo III is a fine restaurant with friendly staff, large portions and filling empanadas. One of the things I like about El Pollo III is that it has a pretty large selection of dishes. Oxtail stew, plantains, empanadas, rotisserie chicken and a bunch of odd Peruvian drinks can be found on the menu. Additionally though they don't have a big drink selection (or much alcohol) they do serve sangria in pitchers which I always like to see. Because of al l of this El Pollo III is pretty good for large groups... last I was here I brought a bunch of friends and everyone enjoyed themselves. Personally I really like the empanadas here. If you get them with the rice and beans you get a very filling meal for less then 10 dollars. The empanadas themselves are also very tasty and fresh. Probably the best thing on the menu. The rotisserie chicken is also fairly good and if your lucky you get them right after they are made when they are the freshest. If I can give some criticism to this place though is when you sit down near the front there is this terrible chill that come in during the winter. The door here is easily made a jar and on cold days your whole group will be blasted by chilly wind. I feel like this can be easily solved with an air lock awning (or whatever you call it) that restaurants use. It would really improve the experience of eating here. We've ordered delivery from them in the past and the food is always decent BUT when I went to pick up the food this time, a few things have left me a bit dissatisfied and concerned. 1. They don't seem to be making the order until the person picking up the food checks in with them, resulting in a 15-20 minute wait inside the restaurant. Seems pointless to order in advance. 2. The staff are NOT strict about mask wearing at all and it doesn't seem like the kitchen staff are wearing masks either. I used to work on the same block as the original El Pollo on New Utrecht Ave so I was very pleased to see them open up a new shop very close to my apt in a spot that once housed a Mexican restaurant that had a not so well kept secret of having a bordello in the apts upstairs. Well the Popo finally shut that down (frankly I was scared to eat there) and after a few months of nothing in the spot El Pollo 3 emerged. The spot is much nicer than the hole in the wall original, very modern looking with nice wood tables,stylish wall mountings and 2 flat screen tv's. The ladies behind the counter are as friendly as the original. I ordered the Papas Rellena to start. Its a potato stuffed with ground beef, olives, hard boiled egg, onions and garlic. They serve it with a small red onion salad. It was a very satisfying starter and for just 4 bucks could easily make a cheap lunch. Of course I had to get the chicken because it's what they are known for and that is always my rule for first times and the chicken was delicious. Moist and full of flavor all through, they must seriously marinade these babies. The skin was delicious if it could be just a tad crispier. The rice and Beans were fine. Needed a shot of hot sauce but while not the best I have had they werent bad. Very happy to see this place as I love the Latin places when I am in Ridgewood and was hoping they would open up one in Bensonhurst as the area has enough of a Latin population to merit it. read more

My brother and I were going to order from the new Utrecht avenue location, but saw this was closer and ordered from here instead. MISTAKE. 1) Empanadas are miserable. See photo. The insides looked like burnt and dried ground beef. Tasted like 3 day old crumbs wiped from the microwave. Inedible. The empanadas at new Utrecht are far superior. 2) the pernil tasted like salt. I don't mean that it was salty, I mean it tasted like a spoonful of salt. Could not taste any pernil underneath. My brother, who powers his way through any dish no matter how cold or how inferior, had to stop eating less than halfway through because it was too salty. 3) Maduros were hard and undercooked. Heaven on Earth! It is all about the details and this place has it down packed. The food is delicious. Tasty chicken, great tostones with garlic sauce, and the best rice and beans in town! They have a great sauce that is spicy but very savory. The chicken stew is my second favorite. My favorite right now is the lomo saltado! Wow! The decor is intimate and makes you feel cozy at home with all season christmas lights and books you can actually pick up and read. Now that is something! This place is very special and close to home. I call for delivery but I often pop in to have a meal because it makes me feel great. They continue getting better week after week with new details like nice bottle of water on the table and nice glass cups. Very chic and boutique-like styled with brick walls. I've always wondered if I was Latin American in my past life. It's one of my favorite cuisines and I do adore the language and culture. Hablas español anyone? Pio Pio was too far away and I was sick of all the Asian restaurants in the area. I came in with no expectations and left feeling surprised. El Pollo III is quite authentic, the food was great and the prices are fair. The restaurant appears to be family run, a couple of the servers were young tweens or teens. Service was very friendly and attentive, our waters were constantly refilled. Portions are pretty big so you could go with sharing an entree. The chaufa de mariscos was an assortment of fried seafood such as shrimp, crab and calamari. It comes with rice as well. The sauce was more like a marinara. The carne guisado con arroz y habichuelas was beef stew with rice. I preferred this dish over the other. The stew blended in nicely with beans and rice. My only complaint is that they used white rice instead of the standard yellow rice. Not sure if it's because of the dish I ordered but I assumed they only served yellow rice. Everyone else in the restaurant had yellow rice except my table. What gives? Overall, worth checking out if you're in the area especially if you're tired of the over done Asian restaurants. read more

I like this place! My fiancee and I have been going here for several years now. The food is always delicious, especially their seafood rice and seafood soup. Generous portions and decent pricing. Some of the food isn't as good, such as the ribs (which used to be better), but anything seafood or chicken related is delicious. I've come here a few times to eat and I always enjoy the food. The place cute inside. It's dim inside and they have lights hanging from the middle of the ceiling to the walls. I've tried the new ribs with rice and beans. The meat was so tender and the now sauce was nice and tangy. The ribs was a decent size. I've also tried the BBQ chicken and it was a chicken leg attached to a thigh drenched in bbq sauce with rice and beans. The chicken was really good as well. I've also tried the empanadas. They have beef or chicken but I only had beef and they give you this green spicy sauce to dip it in that makes it even better. I got the half chicken with rice and beans. The chicken was good the rice and beans were better. My friend got pernil with rice and beans and he said it tasted like a TV dinner even though he ate the whole thing so I would suggest the chicken. Also had fried sweet plantains and fries which were very good. Delivery took about 20 minutes. I would've given it 5 stars if my friend liked his main dish. El Pollo III has really good food, but they can be quite a pain sometimes. They have the oddest excuses that I've heard for standing between a meal and me sometimes (like not having any available ripe avocados). How on earth do you do 25% of the menu items without avocados? Easy enough to give them a call and have them deliver. The guy will arrive quite promptly. Their empanadas are amazing, and we like their chicken combos a lot. The prices are very fair for the quantity and quality of the food. Don't order the jalea, aka the grease platter, but if you do, make sure it is for immediate consumption because it is very chewy the next day. The seafood they use is not very good at all. The interior of their restaurant is so cute with Xmas lights strung above. There are about 10 small tables throughout the restaurant. I was with family so we decided to order the family meal which came with a whole chicken, fries, salad and rice. The chicken was succulent and packed with flavor also a had a hint of a lemony taste which was delicious. The fries were crispy and salted nicely. The salad came with this vibrant and citric vinaigrette. I would have easily used the vinaigrette with every single salad I ever eat in my life. And of course the rice was delicious too.
