I was in the area and craving something quick and easy, that would hopefully last me a few meals. Kowloon Kitchen popped up on my radar, seemed to hit the marks so I scoped it out. It's a small place with really only a counter to order from (no place to dine). Picked up their combination dinner which included: Pork fried rice, fried chicken wing, pork chow mein, and sweet and sour pork (total $19.50). I was pleasantly surprised to see that food was made to order, as I was expecting the typical pre-cooked Chinese food laid out under heating lamps or warming trays. Sweet, I thought to myself - bonus points on fresh Chinese food. It was about a 15 minute wait for my order during a period where the restaurant didn't seem too busy or slow. Fast forward to the unboxing at home - the chow mein and fried rice looked fine and as expected for fast food Chinese food. As for the fried chicken wings, I was disappointed to find two small fried drumsticks instead. I was expecting a fuller entree as the menu didn't specify these were only appetizers with a quantity of 2. I suppose for the price paid, you really shouldn't expect 4 full containers of food, but it felt a little misleading....and it was advertised as wings :( Additionally, the box with the sweet and sour pork wasn't full. If I recall correctly, it was about an inch to 1.5" below the top. I don't know about you, but most Chinese take out places typically fill food at least to the brim. Ah well. As for the taste....the fried rice and chow mein were a bit on the blander side. The fried rice actually had larger chunks of pork which was a little surprising considering the skimpiness of the sweet and sour pork. I ended up having to use some of the included sauces to make both carb dishes more flavorful. The veggies in the sweet and sour pork also felt undercooked. I appreciate family businesses, but the food here was a bit underwhelming plus the small "wing" order and the partially filled box of sweet and sour pork made the meal a bit to be desired. read more

This is a small mom and pop operation. The kitchen is tiny and they only do takeout. They have a surprisingly large menu for the number of staff and the size of the kitchen. We ordered egg foo young with beef for the two of us. The amount of food was generous and flavorful although it tasted too salty. A cup of water would fix this. The vegetables in the omelet were unobtrusive. The serving had some rice but it was mostly the egg and and some beef that formed the bulk of the food. The egg omelette had an interesting texture. It was puffed really high and it held its shape even under pressure. I am curious about what they added to the egg to get that effect. We were both unable to finish the meal. So we took the boxes home and reheated them the next day. Eating it as a leftover, it seemed much nicer than the day before. The price for the meal was pretty low given the amount of food you got. The owners purchased this operation recently. So the quality of the food is quite different from the previous owners. The name of the restaurant suggests Hong Kong style food, but the menu read like standard Chinese restaurant offerings. The food was served in take out boxes. It was kind of convenient because we couldn't eat the entire meal. The ambience is beat up. Honestly, I take this as a good sign. The owners have invested in food, not decor. read more

This was our first try of their Chinese food. We wanted something cheaper than our normal go to. It's close by and the prices were affordable. Their wait time was only 20 minutes. We ordered pork chow mein & Mongolian beef. We make our own rice, because we like brown and they only have white. Unfortunately, the portions, although a good size, did not have a lot of meat. Tasty Chinese food that's also really affordable! (IMO Real Chinese food should not be expensive.) We love the yummy HK Style Fried Noodles (crispy fried noodles served with a tasty sauce you pour over), the fried rice has good wok-hay as does the garlic green beans, and the salt and pepper fried fish fillet are well seasoned. Do keep in mind that take out fried food tastes better with a bit of crisping up in the oven. Can't wait to try more of their menu! read more

Modestly priced take out only Chinese spot. Got the combination dinner #4 for 2 people, which came out to under $25 after tax, which I consider very reasonable for the amount of food listed. The best thing was the pork fried rice. It has a smoky wok hei flavor which I appreciated, and there was actually a good amount of pork inside in my opinion. Everything else was relatively mediocre. Cashew chicken was mostly celery, and did not stand out in any way. It honestly tasted a little better cold out the fridge as a salad. Sweet and sour chicken was ordinary. They list menu items "barbecue spareribs" and "fresh fried shrimp" as if they would be similar portions as the other dishes, but you get 2 of each (that's 1 per person if you're splitting this with someone). Kind of a hidden underscore to the value of the combination dinners. These items were also just ok. Absolutely no changes are allowed for the items for the combination dinners, which is a little strange to me. Overall I probably won't come here again for takeout Chinese food. Or I'd stick with the fried rice. read more

This is a nice little spot for Americanized Chinese food to go. You won't be finding anywhere to sit, but if you want some US classics it's a good spot. The Singapore rice noodles are especially good. And don't miss the gigantic egg rolls. If you're looking for something more niche like Hunan/Sichuan/Dim Sum of course this isn't your spot. Or if you want table service. But for to go it's good. Prices are reasonable, I wouldn't say cheap but reasonable. And quantities are good. Went there one time. The pork eggrolls were gross. The tofu was soft and spongy and I was told was just tofu but had those shitty mixed veggies in it. I hate carrots. Used to be a regular at Kowloon and then it was sold I went one time with new owners and it was awful and thought after all these years I'd try it since I've heard it's quite good I was so excited to see different protein selections with chop suey ! haven't seems or been able to get chop suey in California, so I ordered pork chop suey and it was as good as NY Chinese restaurant chop suey, only vegetable missing was onion, so next time I'll request added onion. The egg rolls were puffy and delicious. WOR won ton soup and hubby's favorite shrimp with lobster sauce. It was very reasonably priced with great service. This is the place for your to-go/takeout Chinese food! It's located in a small plaza but it does get busy. I suggest ordering ahead of time and by the time you get there, the food is ready! If you don't order ahead of time, I would say a 10-20 minute wait is the norm depending on the amount of food you order. My partner and I got the #3 combination plate for 2 people which includes chicken chow mein, pork fried rice, and sweet and sour pork. The chow mein was my favorite as it tasted savory and sweet with not too much saltiness! The sweet and sour pork has a nice crunch to it and if you want more sauce, there's definitely lots to dip into. For the fried rice, it was not too salty which I prefer. In the end, I didn't feel tired or heavy from the food as it was light. I recommend this place for fast Chinese food or a quick dinner. read more

Now I am ok with celery unlike others in my family which can deal with very little. However, this dish was extreme: like the Chinese saying "they killed the celery salesman." I love a good mom and pop hole in the wall shop. I was craving some delicious soup for the winter advisory so I ordered hot and sour soup, sizzling rice soup, and wonton soup. All of them were delicious and my favorite of the three was sizzling rice soup. The only critique I have was the have smaller chunks of meat in the soup. I also ordered beef chow mein, hong king style chow mein, veggie delight with bean cake, white rice, salt and pepper fried chicken wings, and orange chicken. My critique was that there was too much cornstarch added to the Hong Kong style chow mein. I mean, I still ate this entire dish though. The flavor was on loint Everything else was good! The quality of chicken breast for orange chicken was good. The veggie delight was mostly filling chunks of tofu, the Hong Kong style chow mein was exactly what you want, and the salt and pepper chicken wings were ! All for $84! One thing I forgot to talk about in my last review was the salt and pepper fish. It is a MUST GET. The thing is you have to eat it within an hour of getting it. When it's fresh and hot it's like a piece of fried heaven. I don't know how they get it so freaking crispy and still flaky and soft inside. My new go-to takeout places! This might be the best bang for your buck in all of San Jose - and what's even crazier is that it's located in Almaden and still cheap! This place is solely take out and is somewhat of a hole in the wall, so call ahead and be prepared to eat at home. We order the combo chow mein, pork fried rice, lemon chicken, Mongolian beef and hot and sour soup. The entire meal after tax came to only $41!! Portions were HUGE. We will be eating this for days. I was especially appreciative that they did not skimp on any of the meat dishes. All of our main dishes were fresh and hot. I would ask for extra sauce for the lemon chicken next time as the sauce to chicken ratio was kinda off. My only complaint has to be the hot and sour soup - do not order this!! They must have made it in advance and let it sit out because it literally tasted rotten. It even smelled bad. I'm not sure how that so was so incredibly bad and poor quality compared to the rest of the meal. At least I know now to not order soup. read more

Fast and flavorful take out. I hate living on the south side due to its limited Chinese food. This is my go to spot. Call ahead and they will have it ready within 10 minutes!
