From the Asian fusion menu, I was sort of expecting a ritzy, modern environment, but it's actually super casual, with self-serve miso soup and water--it almost feels like you're dining in someone's home, rather than a business, which is comforting. What compounds the homey atmosphere is the extremely friendly staff. I basically just went with the cashier's suggestions, a salmon noodle bowl, and even added an egg to my meal on the house! When I asked for it to-go he started considering out loud how to best package the meal given the sunny side up egg, etc., which was endearing, and I just decided to eat in. Maybe I'm just not used to Southern hospitality but the care definitely warmed my heart! It feels like the entire restaurant is geared towards the very young Austin demographic since the food is also an easy one-bowl yet flavorful deal. My meal was essentially Korean japchae noodles topped with broccoli and salmon. The food tastes like what you would cook for yourself at home, in the good way. At the end of my meal when I was visibly looking around trying to determine whether I needed to bus my own table a staff member caught my eye and waved me off, in the ultra friendly Koriente way. What a great spot! Came for the first time on a Friday night and the line was out the door, but it went quickly. It's set up to order at the counter and then seat yourself at one of the various indoor or outdoor tables. The set up is a little funky, but I loved that. It feel casual and had a nice buzz of conversation. The food is fantastic! It's simple to replace rice with veggies, and they really let you customize as needed. I got the papaya salad with chicken (and extra veg) and my partner got the beef with the rice medallions. Both were quite spicy -- so know if you ask for spicy they are true to their word! I've had almost everything on the menu and it's all good. The best part about this place is that you can customize your order to make it go from good to great, based on the things that suit your fancy. Add an egg, avocado, or spice; get crazy and try half rice, half noodles one day; test out Koriente's unique and awesome rice medallions instead of rice or noodles- the world is your oyster! We randomly stopped in here for lunch, after surviving the sketchy midday walk (the area is MUCH more fun at night). A man at the counter greeted us warmly as we entered and invited us to peruse the menus and place our orders before seating ourselves. We were heartened by the familiar sights and smells of Korean food, though the menu revealed an approach that was really just a loose interpretation. Authentic or not, I was salivatorily indecisive over getting rice or noodles until the server pointed out a handy combo item that would allow me to get curry with both. Done. A large pot of unsalted miso soup sits right by the counter and is free for the taking. I helped myself to three whole bowls and no one batted an eye. While slightly bland, the little cubes of tofu and strands of seaweed throughout made it a hearty and soothing way to start our meal. When our entrees were ready, our server called our names from the kitchen door and brought it to our tables when we signaled him over. It may be an inefficient system but in the small L-shaped seating space, it works just fine. I practically face-planted into my bowl of curry, which is a traditional Japanese yellow curry - thick from the roux and slightly sweet. I'd chosen tofu as my protein and I was pleased to find big hunks of it, pan-fried and scattered around my bowl. I'd asked for it spicy, which translated to a small smear of sambal paste on the side that hardly added any heat but the curry was so flavorful that I didn't have the heart to complain. I was delighted to find that the noodle portion of my meal was plain japchae noodles (seasoned sweet potato vermicelli noodles, which typically come mixed with meats and veggies), which paired surprisingly well with the curry sauce. I nommed heartily through my meal and quickly made plans to try this innovative meal at home. The restaurant is mostly self-service, so utensils, soup, and ice water are all placed at the center so that everyone can help themselves. Since I drink like a camel, I found that to be a huge boon so I wouldn't have to wait for someone to fill up my cup every time. This also means not having to leave tip at the table (though we left some at the front jar anyway since we'd had such a great meal here). "You won't find a fryer or microwave in our kitchen." They also offer avocado, brown rice, sweet potato cellophane noodles, vegetables, and free range eggs as additions/substitutions to your order. I elected the beef bulgogi lunch special. Eight dollars for a generous bowl of tender beef, a bed of white rice (or brown) and freshly steamed veggies. This also includes unlimited miso soup and salad. Note that none of the food was even close to being overly-salted. Including the miso soup which tends to be the case in most restaurants. So did I finish my meal? No, though I tried my damnedest. The owner was friendly, the place is quaint and clean - and is packed during lunch - but the food comes out hot, fresh and fast. This unique place on 7th Street is very convenient to the freeway as I was leaving town. I had seen it the last time I was visiting austin, and confused it with Coreanos, but it's actually Koriente. I ordered the popular mix mix dish which is raw veggies, cooked rice, and added avocado and the raw tuna, which isn't really raw. It's a good filling meal actually and doesn't leave you feeling uncomfortably full afterwards. I added a jasmine milk tea like many other customers and it was excellent. They strike to make every dish/drink here as healthy as possibly without sacrificing taste. They don't put hardly any sugar in their milk teas, so you can taste the actual tea, which is a nice change from what I'm used to. The pickled vegetables rang close to my country roots with celery, radish, onion, and jalapenos. They offered a complimentary cup of miso soup with soft tofu for the heck of it. To my surprise, a Bibimbap was an actual entree and not a song by Hanson. Perfectly julienned carrots and cucumbers paired with cabbage topped with my off menu choice of beef bulgogi. The red pepper sauce mixed in provided a nice balance of heat without overpowering the protein and vegetables. The wife liked her noodle garden and hummus roll as well. An iced coffee on the way out the door for the wife and we're off to do our weekend shopping. Friendly counter service along with several comped additions to our meal left me no choice but to award a five star rating. This was delicious! I loved the chewy rice cakes and all the veggies. It was like eating a salad with chewy rice cakes and jap chae noodles.
