If you're looking for fast, delicious, inexpensive plate lunch, Kaya's is a MUST stop! We were pleasantly surprised at the quality and large variety of options out of this tiny kitchen located in the back of a small convenience store. We placed our order (mini plates are about $6 and regular about $9-10) and picked up a piece of butter mochi from the counter at the convenience store, no more than a few minutes later, our food was being brought outside to us with a smile. The delicious smell coming out of the take-out plates was overwhelming as we searched for a sunny spot on the beach to eat! Finally after finding a nice place to chill, we enjoyed our unexpectedly fancy and high-quality plate lunches: I ordered from the specials menu: a seared ahi (two huge pieces) covered in a creamy sauce and topped with a mango salsa. I loved my dish but I kept stealing bites of Mike's plate - a huge, buttery piece of steak with garlic and onions. MUST GET!!! Really tasty simple food. We stopped by here after we did the kualoa ranch movie tour and it was satisfying. Our 3 yr old loved the fried rice. Definitely hole in the wall place on the inside of a convenient store. They have two tents on each side of the place with few tables to eat at. Great view of the mountain as you eat. I got the fried mahi over fried rice and it was delicious, my husband got the chicken stir fry and his was average, he didn't finish it bc it was fatty pieces of chicken. read more

After getting muddy and eaten alive at ahupua'a o'kahana state park, we wanted a place to eat nearby that we could bring our dogs. This was about 2.5 mi north and just the place! The staff is super friendly. The menu is small and unpretentious, and the food was good. Best part were the food trucks and picnic area seating. This is definitely a great stopover on the way to or from the north shore. read more

We ordered five different plates. The plates were ok, except for the chili frank special. It tasted like canned chili. If it wasn't canned chili, the cook sure did a great job at replicating it. To make the dish even less palatable, the hotdog under the chili was cold. I think I'll stick to the chicken, and rice at Ching's store. The maki sushi is better there too. read more

Hidden gem in Hawaii. Came here for breakfast with a group of 9, and the customer service was excellent. Their menu is very straightforward and they even show you the ingredients if you don't know what they are or look like. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Hidden little place inside a convenient store bit the food is delicious! I got the garlic chicken and it was fantastic. It was not the typical over breaded greasy chicken you can often get it was also covered with delicious firkaki seasoning. They also have good Mac salad. We ended up getting a few different plates our favorite was the shrimp plate, the shrimp were tender and the spicy level was perfection. GRINDZ. All the food they make here is BOSS STATUS. And that's including the bentos and Musubis. They are some of the friendliest staff you'll ever find on this island. As our trips out to the North Shore for camping have become far more frequent in the past year or so, nothing hits the spot after "roughing" it with fully-operational stove tops, ice for days and coolers of libations than a solid plate lunch to fill up after a relaxing weekend. By default, our stop has generally been Papaole's, right at the edge of Hau'ula, coming down the Windward coast. Don't get me wrong, they're great - we were just in search of an adventure. And by "adventure", I mean "different place to eat". Yelp directed us to Kaya's Kitchen, or, to be more precise, Two Bald Guys serving up local plate lunches in the corner of Kaya's Store. If you haven't heard of it, I don't blame you - it's a bit out of the way for town folk. But now that you've heard of it (or read about it), YOU NEED TO GO. Kaya's Kitchen is a hidden gem, pumping out some solid local-style fare - beef stew, grilled ahi, grilled chicken, garlic shrimp, etc. I opted for the garlic steak, and holy damn, I'm glad I did. This steak was loaded with garlic and butter, but *juuuust* enough to be deliciously dressed and not overly so. Steak was cooked to a perfect medium, and the meat was tender and juicy. Mouth watering yet? Served with white or brown rice, and mac salad, which had a slight orange hue to it - I'm going to guess paprika maybe? Remember to come hungry, though - these plates were HUGE and heavy. And for $10? Shoot, sign me up again. Best part? These guys are awesome - really friendly and ran our order out to us as we cruised on the bench just outside the store, even if they were only two of them cooking at the time. If ever you find occasion to make that long drive out to the Windward coast and enjoy the beaches around that side of the island, Kaya's is a must-stop. We were up in the area after visiting Kualoa ranch and were looking for some good food. There weren't many options, but yelp pointed us in the direction of Kaya's Kitchen. At first Kaya's may look like a hole in the wall (plate lunches located in the back of the store), but we were pleasantly surprised by both the food and the service! I came with our family of 5, some who prefer seafood, some chicken, and some beef, and we were all able to find something on the menu that suited our needs. I ordered the peeled garlic shrimp with brown rice (and it comes with mac salad!). It was DELICIOUS and the portion was perfect. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, I love that it was peeled, was super garlicly, and the mac salad was delicious! Other folks in our group ordered the garlic steak, and the garlic salad, and they were all super satisfied with the taste and the portion size, as well. The man who helped us was very friendly and helpful, and brought us our food outside! There is nice picnic table setting with a canopy, and it will protect you against the rain, as well. It is BYOB, so we brought a few beers, ate our plate lunches, and sat outside on a beautiful day. The whole experience was perfect. In addition to grabbing an amazing lunch plate, I do recommend going over to the market side and trying their butter mochi (on the counter). It is probably the best butter mochi I have had on island! Dr. Andrew also thoroughly enjoyed their musubi. I highly recommend Kaya's to anyone passing by or local. Fantastic home style food. We ordered the steak burger with caramelized onions and gravy on a bed of rice. The meat was tender and tasty. A great value for $9. Seasoned well and the portion was great. The macaroni salad on the side which comes with the dish was so tasty, I would have to say it was one of the best tasting ever. Authentic island food made with fresh and tasty ingredients. You should stop by and try this place. I am originally from the islands and visit family often but usually stay further south or in Hawaii Kai area. I'm new to these country parts but stayed recently in Punalu'u. For the convenience and price, this was an a-ok place for a quick dinner. But there were things that would keep me from coming back. I was disappointed with the mochiko chicken because I was expecting exactly that--mochiko chicken. This was chicken katsu because it was breaded and fried with panko as opposed to mochiko flour (sweet mochi rice flour). We also got the furikake mahi which was overcooked and dried; and the shrimp scampi which again, was overcooked and a little on the tough side. All in all, it was decent but not the five stars that everyone is giving it. read more

The year before, my family ordered a plate lunch which was convenient since the poly cultural center doesn't open til 12 and everything is expensive anyways. It's a good place to stop on the way there. There are yellow picnic tables outside to eat. The market is small, but the woman who works the register and cooks the food is really pleasant. The macaroni salad was on point, and the dish came with of course, 2 scoops of rice. Definitely will go back every time I go on the North Shore. read more

Wonderful hole-in-the-wall store. NOT a restaurant. Got the Mochico chicken and it was awesome. The value made it even better. The plate lunch came with mac salad (which i believe is mixed with tuna), rice, and a good amount of chicken. I was taking a scenic route up the east coast to north shore and i am so glad i found this place. For about $6 you get a huge lunch. There are only 2 picnic tables outside to sit at, and no seating inside. If you are driving up the highway don't stop at all the "attractive" places along the way.
