I finally visited Kaya's Kitchen in Punalu'u - situated inside Kaya's Store, which is an old-fashioned general store Local style plate lunches with daily specials available.I tried their Guava Smoked Pork Plate. It was excellent but the side of pickled cucumbers were a surprise, unwanted as I don't care for cucumbers. Open every day from 700a till 700p. Parking on two sides adjacent to the building. A coyple of food trucks align the Ka'a'awa side and adjacent is a canopy covered picnic table area. The counter has quick bites and I also grabbed a spam musubi. Husband ordered an egg breakfast an it didn't even have any seasoning on it. Super bland. Perhaps food is different in Oahu, but it definitely was not good especially for the price. The coconut shrimp I had was ok. Just be prepared that this is NOT an eat in restaurant. You order in the store area and take your food outside to sit at a picnic table. I was picking up Thai at the food truck next door when I decided to get some mac salad at Kaya's. I'd heard it was good and I'm never one to pass up a mac salad when I'm in Hawaii. While I did like this one, my vegetarian boyfriend wasn't thrilled by what we think was tuna in it. It wasn't listed on the menu as having tuna in it but it definitely looked like tuna and we've seen a few other reviews that say the same. It's now made him ask throughout the islands if the mac salad has tuna and he's often given weird looks but better safe than sorry for him. I went for the surf & surf combo selecting spicy garlic shrimp consisting of five good size crustaceans and grilled ahi topped with a wasabi aïoli sauce. The food arrived relatively fast and we took it over to a tented area off to the southeastern side of the store with picnic benches and a nice view of the ocean on the opposite side of the road. Food was paid for at the store till. A good selection of drinks are available although prices seem to be geared toward the tourist trade more common in Waikiki than out in the country. The food arrived hot and tasty with ample quantities of the two selected dishes including Mac salad and rice. Pagers are used to notify you when it's ready to be picked up, people were friendly and the food tasted good, would stop again if I was passing by. read more

Kaya's was recommended to my boyfriend and we added it to our list of foods to try while spending time in the north shore. We are big foodies, so we were thrilled when we tried the plate (guava pork and coconut shrimp combo). Also added an egg to the side. It was one of our top food stops of the trip. I highly recommend. Spam masubi was also good! Had teriyaki sauce on it which is my favorite. All staff were so nice and helped us pick an option since there are so many good ones. Little Market with Lunch Plates [Hau'ula, Oahu HI] Driving along Kamehameha Hwy just a little over 7 miles from Kuala Ranch towards Laie we stopped by this little market located on a side road in the town of Hauula. The shave ice store was the one that caught my eye but we decided to check out the market first (separate business from the shave ice)... ooh! they have a kitchen that offered lunch plates. It was lunch time and we decided to get some food here. Everything on the menu looked so ono! We couldn't decide between the Furikake Garlic Chicken and the Garlic Miso Chicken so the friendly owner asked if we wanted to do half of each in which we happily said yes. There were two covered sections of outdoor seating area w/ picnic benches on either side. She asked us where we will be seated so she can walk our food to us when ready. Took awhile but worth the wait. oh-my-gooooodnesssss! It was love at first bite, and second and third! The meal was made-to-order fresh and so good! The serving was large and was enough for the both of us... hubby and I shared the lunch plate and it filled us up nicely until our next tour at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Kaya's offers great local breakfast and lunch favorites on the North Shore. We happened on their unassuming shop, which is a combination of convenience store/carry out restaurant. We called ahead to see if they were open and were able to place an order for pick-up. The manager is super sweet and efficient. Our Loco Moco was ready when I arrived. They also had an interesting assortment of freshly-made quick breakfasts and mushubi. I selected an egg mushubi. The clerk graciously offered me a box to carry my meal home. Now a Loco Moco is a decadent burger served on rice, with 3 eggs and smothered with a rich gravy. Their version also featured caramelized onions on the half pound burger. The rice was fried with bits of sausage. The Loco Moco ($10.95) was delicious and enough to share. They only offer carry out and the parking lot fills quickly with locals. They carry an assorted variety of cold beverages and soft drinks but unfortunately, no hot coffee. Arg. I'm anxious to return and try one of the ahi dishes. I highly recommend! So good. read more

I had done my research prior to arriving and knew that I wanted to try their Pan Fried Ahi for $13.95. It comes with an 8 oz tuna sautéed in garlic, butter, and onions. Then it's topped with your choice of sauce, which the owner will allow you to try the 3 different sauces before making a decision! I selected the chili aioli sauce and was not disappointed. It balanced out the taste of the fish. The ahi itself was cooked perfectly. It's served on a bed of white rice or fried rice - your choice. I went with the white rice. It also comes with incredible mac salad and Japanese pickles. It's a fairly big portion, but it was so delicious that I ate it all in one sitting! I couldn't put it down. I also bought chocolate butter mochi , as I had read that they make an excellent one. It was certainly very yummy! It was warm to the touch, meaning that they had just baked it. It had the perfect chewy texture as well. The lady inside the kitchen (I'm assuming it's Kaya) is so sweet and full of aloha! I will definitely return in the near future. They also had a window you could order plate lunches from. Unfortunately, we were heading to another place to try, so we did not get anything here. I ordered the "local surfing turf" which consisted of coconut shrimp, Mac, rice and my personal favorite guava smoked pork. the coconut shrimp is breaded with a sweet coconut sauce. Drizzle which I thought was very unique, but not my favorite shrimp I've had on island. (Still 6/10) Mac was one of the better ones that I had (although I prefer a little more salt). Now the star of the show was definitely the guava smoked pork delicious!! I've never had something like that before, and I could taste the smoked guava in every bite. Definitely a hidden gem on this side of the island. Food is outstanding! I ordered the garlic chicken/Hamburger steak mix, the garlic chicken was very flavorful and topped with furikake for added texture and flavor which combined very well, the hamburger steak was topped with grilled onions and a delicious deep brown gravy, the Mac salad didn't have too much mayo and a side a cucumber namasu complimented the plate perfectly. They don't have a giant menu which I like, because they focus more on the quality of food coming out or the kitchen. With that said, there is a bit of wait when you order so it best to call ahead. The restaurant is located in the back of the small mom and pop store, which also have the best deal in booze on that side of the island. Ahi for breakfast? YESS!!! This place really makes ahi and eggs just perfect for breakfast. I tried it in both wasabi mayo and chili aioli sauce. You can taste a slight wasabi in the wasabi mayo. I noticed that the chili aioli was a little more sweeter. But overall you really couldn't tell the difference.... Well I couldn't. I got my plates with fried rice and over easy eggs. The fried rice had the perfect amount of meat to rice ratio. (I hate when people over do it with meat in their fried rice. THEY DONT! I loved it.) Eggs were also cooked perfectly. Garlic furikake chicken was mentioned as a LOCAL favorite so you know I had to order it. Sadly, I didn't care for it. Looked like chicken, tasted like fish. Weird. Their Mac salad with the chicken plate was tasty they put tuna in it and those pickled cucumber, tasted homemade.... Not sure if it was or not but it was good. Parkings right in front or on the side. There plenty of parking. So that's a PLUS! I also noticed on the side of Kaya's they had a shave ice store. It wasn't opened when I got there but seemed to be apart of the store. Inside the store there is all kine stuff! Desserts from local businesses, lemon peel gummies, musubis, foods, condiments, drinks, dog food, shirts, toys, fishing gear and BBQ stuff. All kine! We ordered the pan fried ahi, furikaki garlic chicken, Locomoco omelette and big boy breakfasts. It was delicious. The flavors and taste of the food was satisfying. I got the pan fried ahi with miso sauce. It was really good and paired well with the Mac salad and pickled cucumbers. The ahi was a little dry, but the flavor distracted me from that dryness. The galore furikaki chicken was good too. Simple but so flavorful. The hamburger from the Locomoco omelette needed a little more seasoning and a little more gravy.
