When asked how long the owner how long she's been in business, her reply "I've been pimping out shrimp for more than 20 years". Hilarious! The garlic shrimp was seasoned perfectly. Prices were reasonable. Excellent location across from a beach with a few tables. (North Shore)

We happen upon the shrimp shack while doing our Shaka Guide of Oahu! We absolutely loved the food and staff is so helpful and friendly we will definitely be back when we're driving through again! We had the steak and shrimp which they're known for steak was so tender and shrimp very flavorful. We got the garlic shrimp and the fried calamari appetizer was amazing. I had it with the mango sauce rather than the marinara which I liked! I must try if you're in the area! And so many places to eat right across the street at the beach so it's a beautiful place to eat!

    Seating on ocean front.

Outstanding food. Outstanding view. Best place we've eaten at the entire trip. Only regret is not finding it sooner.

Hands down the best! Hubby and I Came over to the north shore and came across the shrimp shack so much yummy food to choose from decided on the mahi mahi and coconut shrimp and steamer clams this was by far the best meal I've had since being in Hawaii! Didn't take pics cause I wanted to dig in! Steamer clams were chefs kiss highly recommend will definitely be back! Thank you! Nacho and Mari from Sd!

I don't know what it is but I didn't like them at all. Shrimp itself is very fresh but the flavor... was very blend and the rice was drenched in oil. Service was amazing and the view is I mean.. right on the ocean! - amazing. But we won't be coming back for the food

I'll be honest the food here was subpar at best. Quite frankly, I had expected more from the hype that everybody makes it out to be. We just happen to be driving around and come across it which I've heard his name only so figured should definitely try it out. As for the food, it was just OK. Nothing special about it good or bad just OK. The older woman that helped us out just takes an order and hands the food over. Although it is a tough place to be in regards to the view for your lunch. Especially since you can just walk across the street and sit at the picnic tables or tables that they have set up and eat on the beach. That is a toughone to beat. As for being able to recommend this place sure I guess. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, but if you come across it while driving around and you're feeling a little peckish sure go for it.

We were looking at properties around Huula and Kaaawa. I was starving and found this shrimp truck next to a little grocery store. It had good reviews on Yelp so I thought I would give it a try. If you check in on Yelp you get a 10% discount. I was told the garlic shrimp was gluten free. You get a bed of white rice and 8 pieces of shrimp. Cost was $13.75. My husband ordered the Mahi Mahi $14.75 without the caramelized onions. ( they may have gluten on them) What makes this a 5 star experience is the ocean views and the vast beauty of the North Shore of Oahu. We enjoyed our meal and soaked up the beauty of the Northshore. Service was good and timely. Would recommend if you love a unique experience!

After perusing our shrimp truck options in the area, we made the mistake of choosing Shrimp Shack. Their menu contained a considerable amount of choices, including steak, which sealed the deal for the carnivores in our party. Next time I'll insist we stick to shrimp trucks that focus solely on one thing because nothing was done especially well. I went with Coconut Shrimp (I didn't want to peel garlic shrimp, which I later heard were disappointing.) The mushy, flavorless Coconut Shrimp seemed store bought. When I bit into a huge vein in one, I abandoned my entire plate. That was the final straw, I'd rather lose a couple bucks than eat something so unappealing (that may or may not have been fresh.) It's a hassle to use credit card; you'd have to pay next door at the convenience store then bring your receipt to the truck. Also, no water or sodas are sold at the truck; again, you'd have to go to the convenience store. Complete waste of time & money. The only reason they aren't getting one star is because there's seating at the beach across the street which is a picturesque place to have lunch. Just be careful crossing the busy highway.

Super cool ladies! Super fun stop. Delicious food. The fried fish was the best. Sitting by the ocean eating shrimp and fish is dream like. I love the North Shore!

Cute food truck in Punaluu. Follow the yellow surfboards! Small staff and yet service was fast and friendly. Woman owned local business! The coconut shrimp was melt in your mouth. I liked the mango honey sauce that came with it instead of the usual sweet chili. The mahi was tender and delicious as well with lots of caramelized onions adding to the flavor. I didn't try the steak, but my guy said it was good. The steamed clams had choke garlic! Rice was cooked perfectly!! Nice stop of your way to North Shore. Check out their hours as they are closed M-T-W.

Food came out HOT and FRESHH! They were super friendly and patient while ordering. It may be a small place but the atmosphere is so lively.

Garlic shrimp (we paid for a few extra)

Hands down the best garlic shrimp!! Worth the drive, and I think this is the best shrimp food truck on the island. We ordered the garlic shrimp and spicy shrimp. The shrimps were big and juicy. Plates are nice and big as well! The service was great I would definitely be coming back.

Not my favorite place. Flavor was fine. But it lacked the garlic essence of garlic shrimp. The truck was cute. Seating available, which I appreciated. Service was great. But just overall not wowing.

Literally the best shrimp I ever had. Absolutely delicious!!…read more I don't say that lightly either. It was otherworldly!! The staff was great too!!!! I'll be back!

Giovanni's is one of those places where memory does a remarkable amount of the seasoning. I've been…read moreeating here across decades. Enough visits that this is no longer about catching them on a bad afternoon, ordering the wrong thing or failing to understand what the place is supposed to be. I've tried the different shrimp, stood in the lines, eaten at the tables, navigated the parking, brought people here and returned because, for a very long time, Giovanni's was simply one of those places you went when you were on this side of the island. At some point, repetition becomes evidence. The truck itself has become an artifact. Covered in signatures, battered by time, photographed millions of times. There was probably a period when all of that felt charming. Now it mostly feels tired. There is a difference between patina and neglect and the surrounding experience has increasingly crossed that line for me. Flies, crowded tables, overflowing activity, rough parking, heat, trash nearby. You can romanticize rustic only so far before rustic starts asking for a pressure washer. Then there is the service, which has consistently been the hardest part for me to understand. I don't need anyone performing hospitality like they're auditioning for a resort commercial, but basic warmth costs nothing. Too often the interaction here feels impatient and transactional, as though the customer is somehow inconveniencing the operation by showing up to buy the food. After enough visits, you stop calling that an off day. And then there is the plate. The shrimp itself is actually the least offensive part. It is generally cooked reasonably well. Tender enough, rarely destroyed and when you get a good batch you can understand why this formula became so popular. Everything around it drags it down. The rice has repeatedly been soft, clumped and bordering on mushy. I am annoyingly particular about rice, but rice is not some decorative substance placed beneath the main event. It matters. When half the plate is rice, screwing it up is not a minor detail. The garlic is abundant, certainly, but abundance and care are different things. It often arrives more like a wet mass of processed garlic than the fragrance and texture you get from properly chopped fresh cloves. Add the butter and oil and you certainly get intensity, but after several bites the whole thing becomes heavy rather than interesting. The little salad on the side generally feels like an afterthought that has been waiting for someone to remember it. And that is ultimately my problem with Giovanni's. The entire experience feels as though its reputation arrived at the destination years before the restaurant did and everyone decided there was no longer much reason to keep improving. People will continue coming. Of course they will. The name is famous, the truck is recognizable, the photographs are practically mandatory and nostalgia is one hell of a business model. I understand it because it worked on me for years. But strip away the mythology and ask a brutally simple question: If this exact plate came from an unknown truck with no history, no signatures and no reputation, would you still wait in line for it? I wouldn't. Two stars. The shrimp can still be decent and I have too many memories here to pretend the place means nothing to me. But nostalgia should bring you back to a restaurant. It shouldn't be responsible for making the food taste better. I kept returning because tradition can turn habit into taste. I'm done confusing the two.
