We happen upon the shrimp shack while doing our Shaka Guide of Oahu! We absolutely loved the food and staff is so helpful and friendly we will definitely be back when we're driving through again! We had the steak and shrimp which they're known for steak was so tender and shrimp very flavorful. We got the garlic shrimp and the fried calamari appetizer was amazing. I had it with the mango sauce rather than the marinara which I liked! I must try if you're in the area! Nice Spot, Friendly Service, but Lacking in Flavor.. We stopped by the Shrimp Shack as soon as we landed, a local shrimp truck with lots of raving reviews, hoping for a flavorful seafood meal. The menu had plenty of fun options... garlic shrimp, steak, calamari, fish, and more... so it looked promising at first. Unfortunately, the food itself didn't quite hit the mark for us. Not bad, but definitely lacking in flavor and seasoning. Nothing really stood out, and it didn't leave us wanting to come back for more. That said, the location is convenient, right next to a market where we were able to grab drinks. There are a few tables on the beach with a really pretty view, and some extra seating along the side of the market. The woman who took our order at the window was super friendly, and we had no issues with customer service at all in fact she was probably the highlight of the visit. Overall, it's an okay stop if you're already nearby and want something casual, but if you're looking for bold flavors or standout shrimp dishes, this one didn't quite deliver for us. read more

The lady taking our order was super nice! I saw her interaction with the group ahead of us and she was laughing with them and overall gave a super inviting. and friendly vibe. We got the regular garlic shrimp but I almost wanted to order the entire menu because there were so many more items I wanted to try. We just stuck with the garlic shrimp. The garlic shrimp was oozing with buttery, delicious garlicky flavor that kept me wanting to shovel all the rice and shrimp that was smothered in it into my mouth. The shrimp itself was succulent and soft, and every bite seemed like it was heaven on Earth. I would definitely come back to try the rest of the menu items such as the mahi mahi! read more

COUNT YOUR CASH IN FRONT OF THE CASHIER! It's cash only and I handed her a $20 bill and 3,$5s (for shrimp plate, chicken tenders, and calamari). She chatted us up a bit then said, "Oh, you handed me only $25". I'm sure I gave her $35 but I didn't want to say anything, since I could either just take the cash back and she'd make $10 anyway, or say something and she would do something to our food, and we were hungry. So I just gave her more cash and pretended I didn't know what she did, and waited for the food. The shrimp tasted fine, but they were smaller and only 10 pieces (whereas the well-known place in Haleiwa has bigger shrimp and give 12). The "chicken tenders" were just like the kids chicken nuggets you get in the frozen aisle. Very disappointed getting ripped off on the side of the road going up to north shore. read more

I'll be honest the food here was subpar at best. Quite frankly, I had expected more from the hype that everybody makes it out to be. We just happen to be driving around and come across it which I've heard his name only so figured should definitely try it out. As for the food, it was just OK. Nothing special about it good or bad just OK. The older woman that helped us out just takes an order and hands the food over. Although it is a tough place to be in regards to the view for your lunch. Especially since you can just walk across the street and sit at the picnic tables or tables that they have set up and eat on the beach. That is a toughone to beat. As for being able to recommend this place sure I guess. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, but if you come across it while driving around and you're feeling a little peckish sure go for it. read more

After perusing our shrimp truck options in the area, we made the mistake of choosing Shrimp Shack. Their menu contained a considerable amount of choices, including steak, which sealed the deal for the carnivores in our party. Next time I'll insist we stick to shrimp trucks that focus solely on one thing because nothing was done especially well. I went with Coconut Shrimp (I didn't want to peel garlic shrimp, which I later heard were disappointing.) The mushy, flavorless Coconut Shrimp seemed store bought. When I bit into a huge vein in one, I abandoned my entire plate. That was the final straw, I'd rather lose a couple bucks than eat something so unappealing (that may or may not have been fresh.) It's a hassle to use credit card; you'd have to pay next door at the convenience store then bring your receipt to the truck. Also, no water or sodas are sold at the truck; again, you'd have to go to the convenience store. Complete waste of time & money. The only reason they aren't getting one star is because there's seating at the beach across the street which is a picturesque place to have lunch. Just be careful crossing the busy highway. read more

We were looking at properties around Huula and Kaaawa. I was starving and found this shrimp truck next to a little grocery store. It had good reviews on Yelp so I thought I would give it a try. If you check in on Yelp you get a 10% discount. I was told the garlic shrimp was gluten free. You get a bed of white rice and 8 pieces of shrimp. Cost was $13.75. My husband ordered the Mahi Mahi $14.75 without the caramelized onions. ( they may have gluten on them) What makes this a 5 star experience is the ocean views and the vast beauty of the North Shore of Oahu. We enjoyed our meal and soaked up the beauty of the Northshore. Cute food truck in Punaluu. Follow the yellow surfboards! Small staff and yet service was fast and friendly. Woman owned local business! The coconut shrimp was melt in your mouth. I liked the mango honey sauce that came with it instead of the usual sweet chili. The mahi was tender and delicious as well with lots of caramelized onions adding to the flavor. I didn't try the steak, but my guy said it was good. The steamed clams had choke garlic! Rice was cooked perfectly!! Nice stop of your way to North Shore. Fantastic! We've been to several of O'ahu's shrimp trucks and this is my favorite. Can't beat the view and LOVED the spicy garlic, which has more flavor than Giovanni's (which is still good). You can choose mild, medium, hot, and lava. I got hot and my wife got medium. Medium was more mild, at least today. Hot was about a 7.5. Very good. Shrimp Shack is now a mandatory visit every time I'm in Oahu. My family thought I was joking when I said we're going to enjoy garlic shrimp and steamed clams off a truck roadside. If you are ordering with a large group - like 6 different entrees or something, they have stamp cards! Buy a certain amount and redeem one for free. The owner offers this to local residents but you can certainly ask for it as a tourist. You can purchase beverages from the truck or the small market. But if you're a tourist with a pack of water from Costco in your trunk, remember to snag a few bottles before you run across the street for shrimp! read more

We rented a condo on the North Shore and the owners highly recommended a visit to the Shrimp Shack - and I'm glad they did. The Shrimp Shack is a popular food truck with locals and tourists. We selected the platter of mussels, platter of clams and the garlic shrimp to share. Unfortunately, they were out of the mac salad. The seafood omeals are quickly prepared for carry-out. They have a few picnic tables near the truck, but we carried back to the condo. Each of the meals came with steamed rice and lots of garlic. The mussels were our favorite. The large succulent mussels ($11.75) were smothered with garlic and butter. The little clams ($11.75) were also covered in a spicy garlic filled butter. The portions of mussels and clams were generous. The garlic shrimp ($12.75) were also very good. The plate came with 7 medium size shrimp served over steamed rice and ample diced garlic. I recommend and can't wait to return for mussels. So worth the drive from anywhere on the island. read more

This was absolutely the best coconut shrimp I have ever eaten in my life! This food truck was amazing and I ordered onion rings, and they even had ranch dressing ready for them which is perfect because that's how I like to eat my rings. My husband had the steak and shrimp and he said the steak was really tender and delicious so this was a great place to stop and eat and also sit right on the beach and relax while we're eating our delicious meals. Spicy Garlic shrimp - The packed into much garlic, which I love. The shrimp is fresh; I think it is better than Giovanni's and definetly better than Big Waves. My only critique is that the shrimp should be deveine. Clams - a good amount of clams with garlic. It also comes with a side of rice. Crab cakes - we got the appetizers and it comes with 4 pieces and a tartar sauce. Their tartar sauce is delicious with crab cakes. There are some tables in front of the grocery store and a couple of tables across the road near the beach. Great place for lunch if you are on your way to North Shore or activities in Kualoa Ranch. A friend has been raving about this place. He would go there every other week to get their shrimp plates. So we ventured out to north shore. It's a yellow food truck that you can't miss when driving along the road. It's also next to a convenience store. There are tables and chairs available for eating. We ordered the shrimp and steak plate, garlic shrimp plate, and calamari. It comes with a salad. Decent portions. The steak was medium rare like we wanted. Garlic shrimp was good. Food was flavored and seasoned well. It was delicious. There are levels of spicy ness for the shrimps. Lava is the hottest and my friend always gets that. Beware...it'll burn tomorrow (tummy). Found this spot as we left Kuloah Ranch. Looking for a local spot to eat something before our drive back. Saw a long line so we knew it had to be good. Pulled over and ordered the spicy garlic shrimp (deeeelicous). Picked hot and it was perfect. Ordered a steak with coconut shrimp. Steak was tender and juicy and the coconut shrimp was on point. Popcorn shrimp was perfect for the kids. The Mahi Mahi was ok. We dipped in the spicy garlic sauce from the spicy garlic shrimp and it hit the spot. Perfect stop for lunch. And all the reviews rave about the tables across the street and the view being worth it, but the tables are super old and cruddy. You'll get splinters leaning on them. We were disappointed by Shrimp Shack. We tried the garlic shrimp dish. Nothing special about the dish. Didn't excite us. Failed to meet our expectations on flavour and on taste and texture. The rice on the plate was clumped together and crunchy. It upset my digestive system and I ended up vomiting and not being able to eat the dish anymore. It didn't appear the rice was cooked properly. Maybe my stomach is more sensitive than other people's as it sounds from other reviews on Yelp that the rice here is typically served that way: crunchy and in clumps. Not to our liking. We didn't bother eating the breaded calamari. The three ladies on duty the day we went were very nice, but the reason we stopped at Shrimp Shack was for the shrimp dish which proved less than stellar! Please be aware Shrimp Shack only accepts cash as payment. Cash only. The cost of the garlic shrimp dish was $14.75 as I recall. We recommend trying Giovanni's, which is just a few miles further along the road leading from the east side of Oahu to the North Shore. We won't be back to Shrimp Shack. read more
