    Regular kalbi plate
    Rod U.

The closing date is set, December 15, 2025. Their regulars have stepped up their visits while locals living farther away are making their final pilgrimages. By now, anyone who is a fan knows their food so rather than another review, some tips for securing that last taste. 1. They are in a cellular dead zone. All calls made to their number from a cell phone will fail to connect. You MUST call using a land line phone (those things plugged in the wall with physical buttons to press). BUT... 2. They do not answer their phone if they are busy helping customers. Good luck. SO... 3. Go early and order in person. Popular items like the roast pork and hamburger steak sell out by 10am. Others like the kalbi and pulehu shrot ribs by 11:30. 4. Be patient. The wait time is 45min - 1hr. It is accurate. Use the time to grab poke and drinks in neighboring Laie or Kahuku. It's all worth it. Same loaded plates. Same nostalgic taste. Same aloha delivered with a smile. One last time.

This is your last chance to enjoy the food at Papa Ole's. Set to close on the 13th of December, they have food here that is worth the drive to Hauula. I got a double side portion of some of my favorite thick cut pulehu and kalbi ribs on the island. The shrimp and loco mocos here are also excellent. Even though I called my order in, there was still a 2 hour wait on my food and it's cash only. Use this number, because the primary phone line has already been disconnected. 18082271373 Hopefully they will be able to find another location and still feed the North Shore community. @#bigboyproblems

@fortunefoodfinds: "This spot will forever hold a SPECIAL place in my heart! Say it ain't so... I just learned this morning that PAPA OLE'S in Hau'ula will be closing on December 15. Coincidentally, I visited them this past Saturday n' ordered my favorite surf n' turf lunch plate on da island: their BIG "J" SPECIAL. Thick cut pulehu ribs + shrimp sautéed in a cream sauce served on a bed of rice with a side of Mac salad + can't forget about the creamy pb rolls. I can literally rave all day long (ask mah hubz hahaa) about how onolicious this order is, which is why I will def miss this mom n' pop local biz!" Service: friendly Interior: n/a Exterior: 4 picnic style tables n' seating in front of the store Wait time: 30-45 mins, recommend placing a phone order so by the time you get there it will be close to being ready. They will text you when it is done. Parking: plenty in lot Overall comments: the grilling technique of the pulehu ribs gives its distinct, mouth-watering flamed flavor. The shrimp in their cream sauce is so bomb n' when the rice soaks up the sauce you can't help but inhale it all. The Mac salad is a nice, cold addition to the savory plate. To top it all off, gotta have their yuMmmy pb rolls that's not too sweet but perfectly fluffy n' creamy. Hands down the best surf n' turf lunch plate that I crave constantly n' will have to dream about after their last day! Hopefully they will have pop-ups in the future bc you can count on me to be there!

Ordered the sweet bread French toast with mac nut. There was another woman that had come here before to order that and is back to order the same thing bc she loved it. So I figured I would give it a try. I was rather disappointed at the amount of Mac nut that was given for the $3 up-charge that came with it. It was literally a sprinkle of Mac nut which was lost in the ample amount of sauce on the French toast. See pic. The sauce was good. Not too sweet, just way too much of it on the sweet bread French toast. The toast itself was a little lacking in flavor. Was cooked well. No overly soggy or undercooked pieces. Definitely filling for the amount you get. Decent value for food portion to cost. Service was ok. The wait was quite long. This place is cash only. Come early to avoid waiting almost an hour for French toast. I can't say it was so great that it was worth the wait. I would consider coming back if I can be here when it opens. Or during slow times.

So sad to hear that they'll be closing I drove all the way from Kapolei today to get one of my last days there. Let me tell you, it's worth the dive n time. We got there n there was a long line already at 10am. The line was moving but there was a 1.5 hour wait time to get your food. And yes we waited over n 1 hour. We walk the little to kill time. We ordered Big J special, palehu ribs n creamy garlic shrimp, kalbi n palehu ribs combo, hamburger steak n kalbi n beef stew combo. My Big J plate is awesome n flavorful. Love the char on the ribs n the shrimp sauce is the bomb. All their food is great n tasty. The sister has great customer service and very polite. Never go wrong with the price either. Gonna miss my drive out there for their food. P.S. Please open somewhere else I'll drive their for you anytime

Plate Lunch with sweet Garlic Chicken & Hamburger Steak.

Still 5 Stars in our book. Since my review 5 years ago, they've had to make some changes to their routine due to the Covid years. Some places have had to evolve & even came out better for it. Dining area is outside with 4 large picnic tables. And this IS Hawaii where you're welcome to dine with folks you don't know. We're all part of the O'hana! Today, Hubby & I shared a Garlic Chicken/Hamburger Steak Plate Lunch with rice and their delicious Mac Salad. The hamburger steak was good along with the mushroom gravy & also thicker than the pic shows. The Garlic Chicken was delicious and SO tender! Our cashier gal was personable and efficient. Hope Papa O'les' is here for a good, long time!

    BJ special
    Ashley J.

Always get the BJ Special. The shrimp is always delicious and pairs well with the short ribs. The garlic sauce on the shrimp is creamy and buttery. The shrimp tastes better than those shrimp trucks. Sometimes they take a while to make the food, Depends on how busy they are.

Big "J special": pulehu ribs and mayo shrimp combo with Mac salad and rice
    Li Y.

Papa Ole's local hotspot out in Laie. Order and pickup at the same takeout window. Then take your onolicious food to the beach or... find seats st the picnic tables set up in this outdoor strip mall. What we had: an assortment of plates shared between the four of us. The number one choice was the kalbi ribs and the pulehu ribs and the ribs combo plates (notice a theme here?). Minis costing $13 and full plate of ribs $22. Get the full size! The "J" combo consisted of pulehu ribs and mayo shrimp. All of us said we would pass on the shrimp. Nice surprise was the locomoco or "Aina moco". You some of the most delicious and juicy hamburger patties smothered in onions and mushrooms served with either brown or mushroom gravy. Moco topped with three eggs cooked the way you want it. For us it was over easy. Would definitely get again. Located in the same strip mall as Longs Drugs. Order your food first then walk over to Longs to get whatever snacks, drinks, and other shopping you might want done. By the time you are finished, your food should be ready! Super delicious I am already plotting my next visit. Whichever, do get there soon. Future plans beyond the end of the year so far unknown.

    The J combo
    Michi L.

Papa Ole's is a bit out of the way but it's well worth it! We got the special J combo to share which includes pulehu ribs and mayo shrimp. They have a couple tables in front of the restaurant. They don't have any indoor seating so it's just the tables in the front and it's cash only. The ribs were huge and very good. Pulehu ribs were tender and had good flavor. The mayo shrimp was very tasty. Normally, shrimp is just cooked with garlic butter but I liked that it had a creamy base because of the mayo. The plate was very filling. My mom, sister and I were all able to share it. The service was good. If I happen to be near by, I'll definitely stop by.

Mini garlic chicken w/ rice & mac salad
    Ruby S.

Made to order, local style breakfast and plate lunches to go in Hau'ula Kai Shopping Center. Lots of free parking. Best to call your orders in advance. Otherwise, expect to sit on the benches and listen for your name to be called. We waited patiently for 45 mins. Cash only. Choice of mini or regular, mac salad or tossed salad. Courteous and friendly customer service. Even the worker asked us if we wanted brown or mushroom gravy. We ordered all mini plates. Two thumbs up for the rice. Ordinary mac salad with carrots and mayo. Garlic chicken: Five small pieces tasted dry and light on sauce. Not what I expected. Hamburger steak w/ mushroom gravy: We love how hamburger patties tasted homemade and thicker in height. Mushroom gravy tasted alright. We think we would've enjoyed hamburger steak more with brown gravy. Teriyaki chicken: Generous portions. Marination used for chicken tasted delicious! I'm not a huge fan of teriyaki sauce. However, this one hit the spot. Our son enjoyed his lunch. We'll give it another shot for breakfast, or hamburger steak with brown gravy if past eleven o'clock, and plantation iced tea. Very casual and chillax!

Hubby got a mini kalbi plate and we ate it at Turtle Bay
    Emelryn Vebs D.

Papa Ole's was the second stop on my husband's North Shore food tour, and we were excited to try their famous kalbi. As a local favorite, this spot is well-known for its generously thick cuts of meat, so we went with their signature kalbi plate. Quick tip: they are cash-only. This was something we didn't know ahead of time, so we're only able to grab a mini kalbi plate. It came with a scoop of rice, a classic mac salad, and, of course, the kalbi itself. The cut was impressively thick, definitely the thickest we've had on the island. The marinade was on the milder side, slightly sweet and salty. While delicious, the kalbi was a bit chewy for my taste. I still prefer a thinner cut with a bolder marinade. Overall, Papa Ole's was still good. The staff was friendly and the service was fast. Though I've also heard it can get busy here so it's better to phone in your orders. We'll be back for sure, probably with a little more cash next time to try other plates they offer.

Kalbi ribs, puhelu ribs, loco moco, and garlic shrimp
    Neil E.

Arguably the best puhelu ribs on the island! I Was already on this side of the island so ofcourse I'm gonna stop by and grub. Ordered 4 mini plates: loco moco, Kalbi, Pulehu, and shrimp(first time) Garlic shrimp(shell on) was my first time trying this had a thick butter cream sauce which it was yummy. Loved it with rice but with that sauce it could've been on pasta and I wouldn't complain. Loco moco checked all the boxes with the well seasoned smooth gravy, the burger had a nice crust and still moist. Kalbi and Puhelu cuts were thick which allowed for a good crust on the outside and the meat was still juicy and tender. Kalbi had this nice sweetness and the puhelu is as seasoned salt pepper simple...the flavor of the meat stood on its own legs. It had this delicious but simple ribeye like flavor. Always a good spot to hit when Ont his side of the island. Wish they would expand locations. But until then i'll keep coming back!
