Hukilau Cafe was recommended to me by one of my coworkers that lived in the area. Unfortunately, at time of posting (12/14/25), it is carryout only. We ordered at the walk-up window and didn't wait long for our food to be made fresh! We both got the fried rice breakfast, which comes with two eggs (however you'd like), as well as protein. I opted for fried spam. My meal was hot, fresh, and delicious. It stayed very hot on the drive back to our hotel, as we sat at a table there. Prices are extremely fair for what you're getting! We have gone to this cafe twice, once before covid and once in the last week. It is now take out only, but you are about 2-5 minutes from the beach so it's a great spot location-wise--Eat in the car or on the beach. The cashier was very friendly, we loved that there is a convenience store on the backside of their building to grab drinks and spam musubis for those who didn't want the regular breakfast items. Our food came out in about 8 minutes after ordering. Prices are pretty comparable to other diners, maybe slightly pricey only because the food itself was not anything to write home about. Straight forward menu, good amount of options a la carte but would have loved to see more options for their specials. I got french toast and had to order the bacon and eggs separately since there was no combo which made my meal a bit pricey having to get everything separately. Would I come again? Maybe if I were in the area looking for a quick bite, otherwise I don't think I would make the trip through North Shore just for this. read more

I was on the hunt for Loco Moco before the end of my trip to Hawaii and this cafe was one of the few options along the north shore. Parking was a bit tricky since it's tucked into a neighborhood and doesn't have its own lot, but ordering was easy through a side window since the indoor seating area was closed. I really wanted to like this place because of all the great reviews, but honestly, it just didn't hit for me. I got the sausage plate with rice and eggs, and it was pretty underwhelming. The sausage came in four small pieces--probably about 3 to 4 inches long if it hadn't been cut--with just white rice and eggs. Maybe I missed something, but it just wasn't what I was expecting. Please be considerate of those that live in the neighborhood. I think they usually have inside seating but they're currently under renovation. [Food] I ordered one of the local breakfast options. The fried rice was shoyu-forward. The eggs perfectly cooked. And they give plenty pork links (breakfast type sausage). The food was well-made! The type of food all locals love. Prices are fair! Hukilau Cafe is located in a residential area on the North Shore of Oahu. Good Hawaiian eats for Breakfast & Brunch, as the Cafe hours are from 7am-1130am... As seen in the previous reviews, It's To Go Orders Only! If driving, look for limited neighborhood street parking nearby. You know you're there when you find a line outside, but goes fairly quick. You wait in line, order at the walk up window, pay, & wait for your food... Glad for some shade while waiting for the order to be called. Food was packaged neatly w/ napkins & utensils... It was way too Hot to eat in the car. Luckily our hotel is just 5 minutes away. Portions are huge! Each plate was easily shared with 2 people. My son did not finish his Loco Moco, he definitely had leftovers. Good to know they have a mini option available for the Loco Moco. It was good, while it's still hot. So if you're starving, this is very generous with rice & gravy :) The lady informed us at the beginning, that they ran out of grilled potatoes... We ordered the Hungry Hawaiian. It came with 3 eggs, a choice of 2 meats, a choice of rice or toast & came with pancakes. Pretty basic but filling. Eggs were scrambled, spam & bacon was a good size & salty. We got 2 Hungry Hawaiian plates, which was enough for a couple to share. I also ordered an extra plate of Macadamia Pancakes, Bec why not?! They gave 2 big fluffy pancakes. It was perfect for everyone to have a taste (there was 5 of us). I enjoyed it with the pieces of Macadamia nuts in the pancake... Next time I'll try the Coconut Pancakes. When I'm back to visit in Oahu, I would definitely come back to Hukilau Cafe, order different items & come early before they run out of food. The last time I was here was before Covid. They no longer have dine in and do everything take-out. To me the quality has gone down. I order the fried rice with eggs and bacon and the fried rice was just ok. The eggs and bacon with it all for $14+ was a bit overpriced for what you can get in town. You can get a better breakfast and a better deal from the Bald Guy about a mile and half up the highway. read more

In June 2021 this place offers take out only, dine-in is closed. They also are cash only. We luckily arrived early, about 8:15, and found some scarce parking. We placed our order at the window and waited about 10 minutes or so for them to call my name. Immediately after the breakfast rush came and parking, already tight, became really difficult. About the food: I had the vegetarian omelette and it was a big portion but needed salt. The potatoes were good but I was so full that I hardly touched them. The wife had banana pancakes and loved the fresh flavor. Again, the portion is generous. The kid had the pancake special (short stack, bacon) and ate most of it. I think two people could reasonably share a pancake stack. Service was friendly and patient. We liked our food but eating in the car is a pain so it will be good when they open the dining room again. read more

Family owned Hawaiian restaurant in north shore that served good loco moco! Years ago when I came here, as I walked inside the restaurant to place an order to-go, I happened to look around the place and I noticed this man sitting there w someone eating his meal and first impression was like "damn, that guy is hot!". When I got done ordering and walked out the restaurant, my cousin who was waiting for us outside was like, "did u see Kala there?!!!" With her eyes wide open lol I'm like, "who's Kala?!" 5/3/2023 Just letting you all know this place is OPEN! Just the dining room is still temporarily closed. TAKE OUT ONLY! I notified the order taker that they need to change the status of permanently closed, to open. First time and I got the corned beef hash to go with my Famous Shrimp Truck shrimp. Good'ole fashioned beef hash. Ketchup with hot sauce puts the finishing touch on this bad boy... of course you just gott mix'um up in the rice. Plan on a 15 or so wait. They are hiring for different positions. Just call and ask if interested. Also, hears from someone who lives close, that their teriyaki beef and the katsu are bomb! This Review is overdue, hey that rhymes!! It's so over due, it's 10 years in the making. I was in Oahu in 2010 and back in 2020 - how sad is that?? I should be coming here every three years, at the very least. We're drawn here by the Hukilau burger - which has beef teriyaki and an egg on top of it. It's a mighty big burger and we absolutely love it. The loco moco, macaroni and tempura are also very tasty. You get a real local Hawaiian feel when you eat here. Went for lunch today. Great little hole in the wall place for local grinds. First time I went was years ago when they were on the food channel for their loco moco. This time I opted for a Hukilau Burger (deluxe burger with a slice of Teri beef and a fried egg) and a basket of fries. The food was great. The people were wonderful. And the service was quick. I suppose parking could be a hassle cause it's in a neighborhood, but we got one right in front. The prices were insane. That monster of a sandwich was only $6.99! That's nutz.
