This place is PHENOMENAL. I could eat here every day. I love just how insanely fresh their fish is, and also how they prepare it. My parents like their ahi katsu, while I like their mahi mahi tacos and mahi mahi plate the most. The best kept secret is their Poisson Cru-- it was so good that I wanted it for dinner the exact same day that I ate it for lunch. The service is to-go only and you order at the counter. Ken is usually the one taking orders. He's fast and efficient and will not be making small talk or smiling at the customers, but he sure runs an incredible business. There is a sign in the place that says takeout only, you cannot eat there. However, they do have benches for customers to sit on while they wait for their food to be prepared. The mahi mahi tacos take a while for them to make; so just be prepared for longer wait times if you order those. It's really worth the wait, though! The best ahi katsu on the Island. Grab a plate, some poke, and fresh fish to cook later and it's well worth the 70 mile circle island drive. The fresh ahi katsu, huge! 14-16oz, panko crusted and deep fried medium or well done. It is topped with a combo of sweet katsu sauce and garlic mayo all over a bed of rice and a simple pile of dressed lettuce. Always look for the second fresh fish of the day. If available, the ono done katsu style eclipses the ahi. Just the nature of the fish, it is more tender and moist. Total weight is again, about a pound. Note: Fish can also be prepared in garlic butter. It's good but come on, garlic butter vs deep fried in a crispy coating? Good selection of half pound pre weighed containers of fresh ahi poke (ahi sesame ogo, just sayin') and fresh fish filets including ahi, mahi, ono, and marlin. Go early for best selection. Inexpensive. As of November 2025, $16/regular plate. Fresh fish filets, $7.50 / lb less than Costco. Fresh poke, $10/half pound. Cash or card. Same price. No nonsense counter service. Takeaway only. Finally got to make it back to Ken's during short stay in Oahu last year. Been hooked on poke and trying so many places. Was too full from eating a large poke bowl, but couldn't pass up the chance to try the poke here. Just got the spicy ahi poke from the fridge and ate it in the parked car. Wowsers, I gotta say this was super fresh and the smoothest poke I've had. Didn't have much mayo or other flavors, but packed enough heat to add to the enjoyment of the smooth buttery bites. It leaves that buttery coating feel on the teeth that bite through the pieces. And no chewy pieces either. It was simply an absolutely awesome quality poke... Need sushi rice with the poke to have the best meals, but didn't have the stomach space to get the rice. And not sure if they serve sushi rice or white rice. If it's white rice, then I won't care for it. But if it's sushi rice for the bowls, OMG... Next time... Need to get that great katsu again, but I now know the poke is a must have too! read more

I was so impressed by Ken's Fresh Fish!!! This is such a hidden gem in Laie and I would drive out from town any day of the week to eat here. The price, quality of fish and taste is unbeatable. A little fishermen's gem located all the way in Laie, it sure was worth the drive from town. Taking in the beautiful scenery away from the city was just what I needed. As a big katsu lover -- of course I ordered their popular Ahi Katsu for $15. It was a big hearty portion! I love that it's half salad and half rice which balances the dish more. I even had some leftovers the next day. Ken took our order and it took about 15 minutes. They have fresh ahi in their fridge too. Takeout only. Wooden benches to sit inside while you wait. Parking in the front available. Tip: I recommend calling to make sure they are still open, online said it was open till 5pm but when I arrived the sign said 3:45pm so we barely made it in time. My husband had the sashimi from here a few days ago and raved about it, so we came back to try other things. I had the grilled ahi sandwich and it was incredible! I loved the slaw and the sauce that was in it and the combination of those along with the ahi was perfect! So, so delicious!! My husband had the ahi katsu and said it was amazing and had such good flavor! My girls ordered the poke and really liked it but they wished it had more sauce for the rice and that the fish was cut into a little smaller pieces. If you like fresh fish, and find your self in Laie you definitely have to stop in. My wife had the ahi Katsu sándwich, and she devoured it in no time. I didn't do as well, not because the fish katsu plate wasn't great (it was) but because the portion was HUGE. Two people can easily share the fish plate, which had two large portions of ono, seasoned well. No place to dine in, as they are set up for take out only. The menu is simple so ordering was easy. I got the ahi with butter garlic cooked medium and my date got the ono Katsu. No dine-in so when our order was ready we jumped in the car and cruised to the beach. Opening the containers we were impressed with the size and presentation. Sadly, that's where it ended. My ahi was " meh". Not enough garlic and overcooked. They offer the fish cooked medium or well. Being local I would have picked rare but okay. Medium it is. Unfortunately it was cooked all the way through and dry. My dates ono was a little less than ono. Again, being local you know what fresh fish tastes like and this was not it. Ok so you have to call and order. The food doesn't start getting made till you have paid. You don't step inside the shop. It's a 20 min drive from Sharks cove but the drive back to Waikiki beach is beautiful and highly recommended if you have the time. I would recommend skipping the food trucks right across sharks cove and heading straight down here. The fish is fresh. Beautifully done. Katsu is a type of deep frying the fish and even then you know the fish is fresh and flaky and flavorful. It comes with salad and rice. And is a lot of food for a person. Split it with someone of you can and then order their fish tacos. The corn tortillas are legit. The fish inside is fresh. The accompaniments are spot on. These are good fish tacos. I frankly feel that fish tacos are the hardest to get right and ken's has got it. I will visit this place everyone I'm in the north shore.
