Let me get the bad points out first - The prices have gone up and make this an occasional Breakfast spot for me - The tortilla chips that come with orders are not good in my opinion and could be replaced with something better Even with the above points being made, this is one of my favorite places for Breakfast since they are 8am and me being an early-riser I get annoyed when I am waiting on a restaurant to open so I can eat. I used to walk for Ohio State's Campus and have myself a early lunch between classes and would be so full I felt like taking a nap instead of going to class. My favorite item to order used to be the Chorizo Mac and Cheese but that has since been removed from the menu, after that it is the Mazatlan Slow-Roasted Pork & Egg but it is closely followed by the Southern Fried Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich. I always need an order of pancake balls and usually get dulce de leche since if I'm going to indulge in the sweeter stuff then I should go all out. Since I don't frequent the restaurant as much anymore I haven't got to explore a large part of the menu but I know I've had my eye on the Zesty Brussels Sprouts Hash for a while now and I'll probably get that while on my next visit. read more

I've been struggling between a three and a four for this place. At times like this i really wish there's a three and a half. The place is great, clearly reminiscing the small, vintage columbus style restaurant. The place is just a bit too small for winter, i am pretty sure they only have less than 20 indoor seats. The food are miss and hit. The breakfast tacos is a miss. The burrito on the other hand is better, and it is extremely big. But my favorite is the egg with prosciutto and pesto. That is delicious. The pesto is one of the best i've had. I would certainly come back here again to try more stuff. The pancake balls certainly caught my eye. read more

So glad we stumbled upon this place! After staying the night in Columbus we wanted to grab breakfast before heading home. This place was closed by so we decided to stop! I loved the outdoor seating when we pulled up! I went with the famous pancake balls (no filling per the advice of the staff working the register), and cold brew coffee. It was all so good! This was the best egg sandwich I ever had.....for lunch (and for dinner). The pork, egg avocado sandwich packs in the flavor and is super filling for about 11.75. Not cheap, but definitely worth it for the quality of food your getting. The pancake balls looked delicious, and I really want to try the Country sandwich with proscioutt egg and pesto the next time I go. This is a kind of breakfasty-lunch place, where you order at a register and have it delivered fo ryou. Mostly outdoor seating, and I heard on the weekend the line goes out to the street. I also had the watermelon lemonade, which was pretty good, but not worth the 4 dollars I stupidly spent on it without asking. If you ask for tap water they will give it to you. The star of their menu is definitely the Nutella pancake balls. Light and fluffy with the perfect amount of filling - not overpoweringly sweet! The candied spicy bacon is also a unique treat that I haven't seen anywhere else. It's thick and meaty with a great balance of sweet, salty, and spicy. I've also tried the pork and egg sandwich and the breakfast tacos with corn slathered in a delicious sauce. However, I still think the pancake balls are the trump item on their menu. It's an exceedingly wonderful treat when they add the dollop of whip cream (not sure if they do that anymore though). I don't live in Columbus, OH but whenever I visit, Katalinas is required stop for brunch. read more

3.5 Stars. Environment = 3 stars My first official food stop during my trip in Ohio. My friend recommended me to try this small little place so I did. From the outside, Katalina's looks like a quaint little boutique but based on my observations of its interior, it seemed more like a dingy cafe. Limited tables indoors but more seating is available outside. Unfortunately for us it was raining the day we went so we decided to take our food to-go and eat back at home. There were also a couple of flies buzzing over the dish dispenser bin, which grossed me out a little bit, but we were going to eat at home anyway, we didn't really have to deal with the buzzers. Food = 3.5 stars I ordered their breakfast veggie tacos. The tacos themselves were good but not great. The portions were decent for it's price - 3 tacos for around $10. Mine included avocados, red tomatoes, onion, pico, and other veggies. It was more than filling. The best thing, however, was the complimentary "Guajillo Cuban Cob Corn" that comes with the meal. Buttered, perfectly cooked, and spiced with some magical amazing sauce...if I could, I would have just ordered the corn on the cob itself. It was so delicious and flavorful. The breakfast items seems to be a hit, from what I hear from my friends. Maybe I'll come here for brunch next time and order the Biscuits & Veggie Sauce Gravy :-) Service = 4 stars Honestly, if not for the corn, I would just give this place 3 stars. But the service was very quick and efficient. The waiters were very kind and did not rush me at all even though I took a good 8 minutes just looking and looking back and forth between two items on the menu. My friend raved about this place and I seriously underestimated why and then I was blown away by my meal! Everything they have sounds, looks and most likely is delicious! I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and they were served nachos style which was a nice twist on a classic for me and they were to die for! I would go back once a week just for this dish! I live two blocks away from here which is both a blessing and a curse. This place is an Amazing place for brunch with mostly outdoor seating. I definitely recommend coming here on the earlier side because it can get really crowded and busy during typical brunch hours. My friends and I tried their Nutella pancake balls, spicy bacon, famous tacos, avocado toast, and orange juice. All of it was superb. Their spicy bacon was my favorite, it was sweet, spicy and crispy. The spicy bacon came with the pancake balls, which was actually not too sweet and overall very delicious. However it's portion wasn't that filling though and would definitely recommend it not as main entree but as an extra side. Yum! There's often a line that extends out front, but it moves rather quickly. You order at a counter, find a seat, and then they bring you your food. I had the pork egg sandwich and it was seriously so good. I only ate half because it was huge. My husband had the breakfast tacos. So good! Between the two of them, we both had different favorites! Staff is awesome, helpful and friendly ; ) I brought a friend in today who had not been to Katalina's. I didn't realize that patrons have the option to write on/mark up the tables where they're sitting. The markers have a very overwhelming smell, almost like spray paint. I have now eaten at Katalina's three times and would highly recommend it, especially if you have a sweet tooth. The menu items are unique and freshly prepared with high quality ingredients. I have tried both the Original Pancake Balls and the Southern Brown Betty Biscuit Balls. Both have a crisp exterior, tender middle, and sweet interior. I was a little disappointed that the apple butter in the biscuit balls overwhelmed the ham and cheddar. My favorite dish was the Mazatlan Slow-Roasted Pork and Egg Sandwich. The menu is very exciting. The service is mediocre. Over the weekend I was attending an event at OSU, so we walked down for lunch. I was very excited when I saw the menu. It looks great. Lots of new, innovative things. Especially excited was I when I realized the first sandwich that caught my eye was on a spinach wrap - I don't eat gluten. Perfect. Unfortunately, after ordering, we waited an hour before we got our food. I was an organizer of the event, so I was with the guest speaker, and we needed to be back on time to let the attendees back into the building and resume the workshop. So waiting an hour was not something that was ok. During one of the many times we stopped back inside to see what was taking so long, we were told that "1 hour is the usual wait on a Saturday." I find this ridiculous. What I find more ridiculous is that it was told to us 45 minutes after we ordered, as if it were ridiculous that we weren't expecting a 1 hour wait. We ended up having to get the food to go, and we made it back half an hour after the workshop was supposed to resume. Our presenter didn't get to eat until 5 because he didn't want to waste more time people had paid to spend learning from him. My wrap was disappointingly tiny for the 9 dollars it cost. Additionally, I had ordered it without onions, and it definitely had onions - when you mess up by making customers wait an hour, you don't mess up on little details like this. You don't have that room for error. I ordered a goat cheese and turkey wrap which came with raspberry vinaigrette and greens. I love goat cheese, and I expected this to be a wrap with slightly bland turkey highlighting the strong flavor of goat cheese (which needs something slightly bland to background it), with a dash of different flavor to set everything off (the way a little bit of salt makes a melon's flavor explode). What I got was minimal goat cheese, bland turkey whose blandness I could taste because their was too little goat cheese, and a ton of raspberry vinaigrette. It didn't taste very good. I will probably give it another chance because the menu is so crazy. But I will only go at non-standard times, because apparently this is a location that assumes their customers are willing and ready to wait an exorbitant amount of time without being warned (even at Bob Evans they let customers know if it will be more than a 10 minute wait...). But I wasn't impressed by the service, and I definitely wasn't impressed enough with the food to make up for it. read more

Visited Katalina's cafe for the first time today. Pretty much everything good about Katalina's that could be said, has already been said on here. We tried three different sandwiches, Fig & prosciutto, Avocado & Bacon w/fig jam, and Mozarella and tomato. Have to say, the mozarella & tomato was probably my favorite of all 3. The fresh mozzarella, walnut basil pesto combination was perfect for a warm summer day. There are several other interesting sandwich options which will bring me back here for sure. 5 stars for the food, 3 or so for the overall experience. We went on a Sunday, early afternoon, so that contributed. It's a very small place, with some seating inside and more outside. There's a nice parking lot next door, but between people acting like idiots in that, and some rudeness at the restaurant itself (from patrons, not staff,) we weren't exactly smiling the whole time. Still, the food was great. Sweetie had pancake balls with strawberry filling; I had the pork and egg sandwich. We both had bacon- regular, and sweet & spicy. Bacon was very good. Oh yeah! I never get tired of trying new breakfast places. It sure is a good thing we don't live in Columbus. I would be gaining some weight because of this place. We stopped here on our way through Columbus one morning at the beginning of a road trip. Sean had the Mexican french toast and I had the breakfast tacos. Both amazing. The french toast comes with their signature sweet and spicy bacon which was so so unique and excellent! It really has a little heat to it but yet tastes sweet at first. Never had anything like it. Yum! The breakfast tacos have a chorizo/egg mixture, cheese, avocado, and salsa. The tortillas are actually real corn tortillas also, not just your basic flour tortilla. Very flavorful and excellent. The coffee is self serve and they give you a to-go type cup so you can drink it while at your table and fill up for the road. The lunch sandwich options all sounded amazing too. Tucked away on a back street, Katalina's has the comforting feeling of a locals only diner with an airy and modern vibe that attracts a younger and trendier crowd. I've heard the lines can be gruesome during peak hours, with people crowded all around your table waiting to order or sit, so I'm glad we came on a weekday. Late morning and during the week the place seemed more spacious, with only a few students and a family seated. Indoor seating is extremely scarce, but if its nice enough outside the patio is a better option anyway. If you plan to come for brunch/lunch..prepare to queue up and wait for 15 min and that doesn't guarantee a table after you order. (quick tip: have a friend save a table while you order ). They have a parking lot and street parking is free between a certain time. I got the Mazatlan Slow-Roasted Pork and Egg and it came out in a pretty avg wait time. The meat was full of flavor, tender, and juicy. The avocado was a bit old and hard...probably kept it in the fridge for too long. Let's start with the bacon. It comes with the order of their pancake balls. The bacon is sweet and savory with a little kick all at the same time. We are convinced that the thick bacon is marinated in some sort of hickory smoke sauce. It is so good that my husband ate all his and stole half of mine while I was busy with the smoked pulled pork sandwich. I can't believe that he stole my bacon. A lot of yelpers already mentioned their pancake balls, so I won't repeat myself too much here. It is very good. I like mine in strawberry with a dip of whipped cream. A good amount of sweet but not drowning yourself in syrup kind. After 2 orders of pancake balls for just 2 of us, I can't possibly consume another bite. But here it is - smoked pulled pork with egg sandwich. I guess it is possible now. Oh boy....Crusty bread with fried egg, pulled pork and roasted red pepper. The texture is amazing. Veggie sausage and gravy is my favorite thing so far. The brussel sprouts are my favorite side, seriously, just try them, you'll be happy you did, what if you don't like brussel sprouts? Well prepare to be a fan, they're a game changer. Chorizo tacos are a pretty good, the order comes with three, which is a good amount for brunch. They also come with a spicy corn on the cob, yes its actually spicy, yes it's good. I ordered these to-go once and I'd say, skip these for to-go.
