Katalina's on a Saturday morning at 8:15 a.m. - what a treat! The place is a visual smorgasbord of delight. I return to places that churn up an ounce or three of cozy charm. No seating until you order food. Check! Three silos of foodies: 1) breakfast; 2) sandwiches and; 3) tacos. Love it. My choice was Pueblo BLT and an extra chunk of cheddar was ordered. Alright, here's the downlow... the pancake balls are worth the hype. Crunchy outside and gooey, warm inside. So delicious and perfectly paired with the maple syrup. I'd definitely go back for those suckers. But there are a few things I know now if I ever did return: 1) Parking here is a bit of a challenge. We spent about ten minutes finding the parking lot in the back. It's tucked away behind a couple side streets. 2) There's no table service - grab a menu when you walk in and order at the counter. 3) This place is quite pricey. Best to split among friends because for two of us to eat (other person in my party had a sandwich) and have a cup of coffee we spent $35. Holy pancake ball. The service was excellent though. The girl at the counter was friendly and the other staff members refilled the coffee machines as soon as they were empty. Very vegetarian and vegan friendly! The avocado toast was not very impressive (though the bread used for it was amazing), but the pancake balls are so good that it's worth visiting just for them! The Latin leaning Okonomiyaki was probably my favorite though - a soft, savory and spicy potato pancake, which was filling without feeling too heavy. We went around 10am on a Sunday for brunch on Father's Day and easily found seating although it was pretty packed. We ordered the chicken sandwich and breakfast tacos. One of them came with a side of purple potato-like things that were good. The chicken sandwich was juicy and thick with great flavor. The breakfast tacos came in a set of three with elote. The tacos themselves were good but not great. I was expecting more flavor with the chorizo. The corn was really good! Sweet but with a dusting of spices too! They have a bunch of different hot sauces to try which I would recommend if you like a kick! Our total bill came out to be $40 which is a little pricey for ordering two things. Son had Nutella balls which were almost a cross between ebelskivers and a dense beignet. Couldn't really taste the Nutella. They were okay. I have heard about Katalina's in German Village, but happy to try the one in Clintonville. I tried their famous Pancake Balls with pumpkin butter with maple syrup with sweet and spicy bacon with water and Mexican bottle Coca-Cola with real cane sugar. I came here on a Sunday at 10 am and this restaurant was poppin, with the line wrapped around the back, but to their credit it moved pretty quickly. I came with a friend who recommended two dishes they are known for -- spicy candied bacon and pancake balls. I got both of these items and they did not disappoint! The bacon - the cashier explained that the bacon was 1 part cayenne pepper to 4 parts brown sugar and that it wasn't very spicy. It doesn't take much though for me to start sweating lol and this bacon definitely did it to me. So, if you really don't like spicy food, I wouldn't recommend it, but if you do, definitely get bacon! I did eat both pieces and eat pancake balls after to soak up the spice. Pancake balls - the options for filling were nutella, dulce de leche cream, and pumpkin apple butter. You can order half and half with the nutella and dulce, but you can only order the pumpkin on its own as it cooks at a different temperature. I ended up getting the dulce de leche and trying my friend's nutella. Next time I'd try pumpkin. The pancake balls and bacon were both a great combination of sweet and savory, and they were filling which is a huge plus for skinny fat girls. Katalina's is a win-win. True rating: 3.5/5 stars This second Katalina's location is beautiful. The space is sleek, but also warm and inviting. It is definitely a place that makes me want to sit down and enjoy a meal. It's also great that there is so much more room than the Harrison West location, even if this space is still relatively small. The prices are steeper than other nearby restaurants, but the prices are reflective of the quality ingredients utilized. That being said, the food I tried wasn't fantastic. I would recommend skipping the Southern Cracked Cornbread. The cornbread was served in three muffins, which were very dry and contained little chorizo. The eggs I ordered scrambled were also very dry. The Nutella pancake balls were yummy, but (as other reviewers have noted) they did seem greasier than those made at the Harrison West location and were not as crispy as I remembered. The pancake balls also only came with two pieces of bacon. Overall, I do not feel that the price of the food was reflected in the quality of the dishes I tried. However, this will not prevent me from making a return trip. I really enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant and I am happy to support Katalina's ethical business practices. read more

I've been meaning to try Katalina's for a while now! At first I was frustrated trying to find parking as the giant sign with an arrow is not where you turn in. You want to go around the back. I came during a weekday lunch and it was pretty busy. You order at the front and they bring your food out to your table. I went with the famous pancake balls with Nutella and bacon. There was also a fridge with fresh drinks so I got the cold brew and added some Snowville half and half. It was nice they had that brand! The pancake balls were tasty and came with a side of syrup. I wasn't quite sure how to tackle eating one, and ended up cutting them up into pieces and dipping them. I'm not a huge sweets person, so after around 4 of the balls and the bacon I was done. I think you could even split this meal as a dessert with someone. The vibe of the restaurant was cool though, I would come back again to try another entree, hopefully soon! read more

First of all, I've ate here before and food is wonderful. Wanted my husband to try it this morning. You could only eat on patio of about 7 or 8 tables. I've always had a special place in my heart for Katalinas and I was so happy to hear they were expanding out, because lets face it..... that tiny little shack in Victorian Village was not cutting it for patrons with mostly outdoor seating, and limited at that! The Clintonville location definitely has enough seating accommodation and also brings seating to the outdoors for sunnier days. While it's forgoing the eclectic paint markers and DIY décor aesthetic, it's still pristine clean, new and echoes Katalinas. There was a variation to menu items here--I LOVE Katalina's eggy in a basket, but it was no where to be found on their menu here! Distressed I ordered the breakfast sandwich with their signature sweet & spicy bacon. It did the trick. The husband ordered the Migas and didn't care for them, but that's his own personal preference. I thought they looked tasty and well done, but I think he was also distraught that one of his personal faves was nowhere to be found on their menu. We also ordered pancake balls during this visit, because WHY NOT!? We went all out. They were... ok. We opted for the Nutella filled version. I really wished them offered these in a half order, or a side order instead of ordering an entire entrée of them. Reason being....... It was pricey! $50 for breakfast. Yowza! Parking was also very dutch here. There's parking BEHIND the building, but you don't tend to notice that until you've already parked over by Krogers and walked. Iron & Elm business owner is also quite rabid about Katalina customers parking in their lot, so be forewarned. It wasn't an awful experience and the staff was incredibly nice, but there's some sticker shock and menu shock and I think I've had my fill of Katalina's for a while to be quite honest - at least until my next payday. I can't just knock them for price, though. I'm sure it helps source local goodness and pay their workers a fair amount, so I can get behind that. read more

The corn on the cob had a unique seasoning that added a nice touch too. The pancake balls were everything I was expecting - soft, a little crunchy on the ends, and a good amount of filling. Delicious! Went for lunch after yoga with some friends across the street. My only complaint-it's too small! They're popular (for good reason) and there was a line out the door. I had the grilled cheese (crispy on the outside but had some kind of slightly sweet jam inside), soup (delicious! Wow. I don't get it. We paid $50.00 for a subpar meal that we had to order ourselves, and then clean up our table afterwards. I personally don't like that they don't carry "normal" soda options (I like diet coke/pepsi), and the hibiscus tea I get was very non-special. Based on two experiences: My one as a non-vegan and my one as a (ex)vegan: The pancake balls are phenomenal and really leave a sweet taste in your mouth. Dipping them in syrup is just heavenly. Gave this new location a second shot but as much as I want to like this place there are too many misses for a place that charges $30 for bfast for 2! Some tips if you care to listen: 1) temperature of all food varieties should be very warm to hot - not just the soup (which was delicious); if it's luke warm, reheat it before serving your customers 2) season, flavor, season!! The food is beautiful with lots of components and colors, yet the flavor is bland (even for someone like me who likes bland)!
