This is a review for their Ice Cream Taiyaki. The bakery is located next to Jungle Cafe, at the corner end of the strip mall. They accept credit cards, but minimum purchase has to be $10. Since I didn't have cash on hand, I easily snagged a few bakery goods plus the taiyaki ($4.75) to meet the requirement. You can choose from four different flavors: green tea, red bean, plum and vanilla. And for the filling, you have a choice between red bean and custard. I decided to try the green tea ice cream with the custard filling. The green tea had a floral note which was unexpected, but not entirely bad. Although, it can be a bit overwhelming after awhile. The custard filling on the other hand was quite delightful and creamy. I'll have to try the red bean filling next time! It doesn't seem like the taiyaki are made to order, so if they run out, you're out of luck. I went on a Thursday night around 9 PM and they were down to two. So hurry! read more

The service here was really nice, I came here to pick up a cake for my baby brother and I agree that the cake is cheaper than Six Ping. I ended up trying this place because we always bought Six Ping's cakes, and I liked it a lot. They had a good amount of variety and I think I might pre-order. I would give their breads a 4/5 because they are a bit more pricey, and I feel like their bread doesn't have asuch moisture. I like the variety of breads they have, and they carry some selections some stores don't have though. read more

This review is for their Taiyaki ice cream which costs about $4.75. You can choose either green tea, red bean, plum, or vanilla ice cream. Then you can choose what type of flavors you want your "bakery fish-looking cone" to be: red bean or custard. The size was a bit disappointing compared to what I've seen on social media from other places. The green tea ice cream was good though. The bakery cone stuffed with red bean was mediocre and didn't really taste fresh. Props for being the only shop that I've seen so far that sells Taiyaki but they need to research how to make it taste better. I will most likely not get it again here. I'll give their other baked goods a shot next time though. read more

The bread here never dissapoints. Some flavor combos are not my favorite, but I could still finish the whole thing bc of how soft their bread is. It always tastes fresh no matter what time of the day you come. I love their fruit ones, especially the blueberry cream cheese one was absolutely amazing. Located at the end of one of the of the plaza on the road, outside of the buildings. I did miss the store and had to drive around to find it. LOL We stopped by to pick up some savory pastries while we drove around Houston. THIS PLACE IS CASH ONLY which I found out a lot of other restaurants on Bellaire to my surprise. MY daughter wanted to get the Kaiyaki ice cream which we had to come back because it is only available after noon. IF you can come early because when they run out you are out of luck. At night the plaza comes alive. I had to miss out on one but my daughter was every happy with her fresh baked TINY fish shaped cone stuffed with ice cream and topped off with pocky sticks. This is a very authentic Taiwanese style bakery. I loved that the Cake Bun (sponge cakes) were so moist and fluffy. Each pastry is creative and very nicely packaged in its own plastic bag (hooray for hygiene). The green onion bun was salty with a bit of sweetness, but by Asian standards I mean every so slightly salty and every so slightly sweet. I only wish I had enough stomach space to try every one (sad face). Overall, a great selection of pastries. I will definitely come back next time I visit Houston, TX. I am obsessed. That's all. Came here two days in a row for their goodies! This cute little bakery is located in the corner of Dun Huang plaza towards the front, and I mean little, there's not much space to move around with your tray if there's a few people in at a time so be careful! Anyways, this place is definitely a quality over quantity type of bakery, the selections aren't huge but i loved everything that i got from here. Even better is that their prices are just a bit cheaper compared to a few other bakeries in the area. They do especially well with their pandan items like the pound cake, so perfectly fluffy and dangerous because i finish one of those individual slice in like a minute! They have several different breakfast/lunch type pastries as well with sausage or chicken in the filling and those are also yummy. The service here is extremely friendly and quick as well, staff are constantly running back and forth to stock up the items. Can't wait to come back and will surely stock up next time since we don't live close by. read more

This is a great little bakery and feels much more homey than some of the trendy, polished chain bakeries in Chinatown. They have a smaller selection of pastries and breads, but everything looks like it's made with love! I walked out with the milk bread buns and a pineapple tart. The milk bread is super soft and almost pulls apart like cotton candy. The texture is wonderful, but I wish there was an even more pronounced milky flavor. The pineapple tart is the true star: the tart portion is buttery and crumbly, just like the ones my mom brings back home from Taiwan. The filling is fresh and moist rather than dry, as I've always known the filling to be. You can tell it's freshly made pineapple jam! This is definitely the best pineapple tart I've had outside of Taiwan! I'll be back to try more goodies from the cute bakery with tons of heart! read more

As soon as you open the door, you can immediately catch a whiff of the fragrant smell of homemade bread. The second thing that hits you is the warmth, especially on a cold day. The third thing you see is the abundant baskets, full of bread. Bread lovers, you are going to rejoice when you experience it. The bread is baked daily, which you can immediately tell by the smell and also if you just look at it, every bread looks fresh. For my first visit, I bought a variety of bread, but sadly my family ate almost all of it. And that's a sign that they all enjoyed it! The few nibbles I did try was good enough to earn a second visit. The bread texture was chewy, full of flavor and soft. It also wasn't too sweet. Bonus: Everything in the shop is cheap, but if you don't buy enough, you have to pay in cash. But that gives you an excuse to buy more than usual. For the second visit, I tried their "Egg Tart" and "Taiyaki Ice Cream." The egg tart from "Kamalan Bakery" can't be compared to the one from "85 Degrees C Bakery", in Dallas. To be fair, I was spoiled when I tried the egg tart from 85 first before Kamalan. If it was the other way around, I'm pretty sure I would be less picky about it. The custard part of the tart was completed separated from the dough and I could almost peel them away from each other. It made me wonder if they cooked the egg custard and the pastry dough separately. Also the balance of the savory and sweet flavors didn't compliment each other well. The color of the custard was dull and it didn't looked appetizing. For the Taiyaki, I bought the red bean paste filling and Matcha (green tea) flavored ice cream to pair with it. It was okay, but I wouldn't buy it again. My friend and I both agreed it would be even better if the taiyaki was warm, but maybe it was just a really cold day. I didn't enjoy the Matcha ice cream too much either. It tasted and felt fake. Overall, it was really pretty, but not worth the 5 dollar price. Despite my complaints, I still recommend you coming here and trying out their bread. That's what they are most known and I think that's what you should mainly stick to when coming here. read more

It's a very small bakery that faces Bellaire. Being that we came in late Saturday night I knew they wouldn't have what I wanted. The shredded pork on the pastry but I ended up trying their taiyaki ice cream. The biggest win for me. It's only 4.75 too. What a steal. This is hands down my favorite Asian bakery in Texas. Ugh just writing this review is making me crave it. Parking is tight in that part of Chinatown, but once you park and walk inside, immediately the smell is addicting. I wish they made an air freshener with that smell. In my opinion, their bread is better than the new guys across the street, 85C. I prefer Kamalan because their bread isn't as oily/greasy so you don't feel as terrible for eating pure carbs. Also, the bread is bigger and a better price. I also hate how 85C will often neglect their bread cases in favor of churning out egg tarts, so a lot of times their selection is kind of thin. But Kamalan always has fresh bread coming out and rotating in new flavors. The bread tastes super authentic like what you would find in Asia, and they have tons and tons of variety. The amount of filling in the types of bread with filling is generous so you don't end up eating tons of bread with not enough filling. Their taro toast is AMAZING and their taro cake is even better. It's made with real taro and not that fake paste type stuff. Honestly I've had dreams about the taro cake. Unless something earth shattering happens, I'll keep coming here instead of 85C or anywhere else for that matter. read more

Oh. My. God. Get in the car and drive here now. Firstly, screw all the hype for that new bakery that just opened up because this will forever be number one in Houston! Every single thing on the shelves are baked fresh every hour or so. It won't get any fresher than that. Egg tarts, now I'm a huge fanatic for anything egg based but my specialty lies in egg tarts. These egg tarts are not flaky which is a little sad to me but the filling makes up for it all. The egg is so delicately cooked you won't find such sweet and somewhat savory tart perfection anywhere else. Their hot dog buns are scrumptious. Cheesecake bars are to die for, they use such fresh cream cheese you can taste the beautiful flavor. When we were paying for our food they just pulled out something from the oven and it turned out to be a bacon/ spinach and cheese pastry. We immediately asked to get some and it turned out to be a now staple whenever I go there. (The lady behind us got mad that we took the fresh ones but shhhh.) Gosh this place will be the beautiful death of me if I come here daily so let me just come here weekly! The prices are so affordable. TL;DR Yes Yes Yes! One hundred times over for this place. It will unite all under its signature sliced bread that has the consistency of a bagel, with the softness as a sponge cake. On April 8th, 2015 the Kamalan dynasty opened its doors to little fanfare, but like so many other greats, it is a dark horse coming to sweep the taste buds of everyone. The Traditional hot dog bread is spiced with curry that makes it unique. The sausage (2-way) bun exhibits a crisp crunch for the cheese portion, and a satisfying zing on the green onion side. It uses sausage instead of hot dogs. The Bacon bread is glazed with flavor, as you surrender yourself to this masterpiece. I know if you're a local, you're likely to compare Kamalan to Six Ping, but in my own very subjective opinion, Kamalan Bakery blows Six Ping out of the water. Kamalan's pastries are done with such consistency. As some reviewers have mentioned, there is actually a set schedule for certain pastries to be made each day at a certain time. So, if any of you are like me when it comes to pastries, I want mine fresh! However, what stands out to me is that, even if it's not freshly made within the hour, their pastries are still legitimately good; still soft and not stale in flavor. I was never a huge believer in Asian pastries growing up, but I can honestly say Kamalan has made me a believer. By the way, definitely try their COCONUT JELLY. The first time I came they didn't have what I wanted. Second time was the charm. When you first walk in it smells like heaven. They sell baked goods from meat buns to fruit ones, cakes, and taiyaki (which I got). It's a baked fish shaped treat that's normally stuffed with a bean filling in Asia but here they stuff it with your choice of ice cream and your choice of red bean or custard. I chose matcha ice cream and red bean. They also stick marshmallows, whipped cream, and a pocky stick in it to garnish. It's pretty cute in looks but taste was just ok. 4.50 stars. The savory bakery items at Kamalan are pretty fantastic. I'd be hard pressed to believe that you can find many Chinese bakeries operating at this level within the States. It certainly is one of the best ones I have found in Chinatowns throughout the nation. As I earlier mentioned, look for the savory items. Kamalan does a great job with dry meats and baked goods, and you are bound to find something that works for you. While everything I tried was brilliant, their Chinese pizza was probably my favorite item. I even had a friend take items back from this bakery to Washington DC and she reported that the food held up! So Kamalan may be appropriate for long road trips for those of you who are just stopping by or on your way out of Houston. The bakery is next to Jungle Cafe in Dun Huang Plaza facing Bellaire (can't miss it with such a big white sign!). The bread is softer and tastes "cleaner" than Six Ping's if that makes sense... When I eat Six Ping's breads, I feel like I'm indulging in something guilty and sweet, but here, the breads are delicate and taste more wholesome (dare I say, healthy???)-- definitely less sugar~ Still so delicious though *heart*! My parents said some breads like the original pineapple bun and cupcake breads taste pretty much the same as Six Ping, but that their puff pastry breads aren't as rich/tasty. I really like how Kamalan has some new bread varieties and ideas that Six Ping hasn't tried yet (I'm a sucker for anything new!)-- 9 grain taro, black sesame taro, wheat walnut apple bread, etc~ 4.5 stars :D Service is much friendlier than Six Ping too! This is a new bakery in the Dun Huang Plaza comparable to the nearby Six Ping Bakery. This place is so cute, and the decorations remind me of an American countryside-type home. Never have I ever been to an Asian bakery where they give out samples, and I'm so glad the lady was offering samples of the Mango Cream Cheese Bread because it was amazingly soft with just the right amount of filling in the middle. Yay another bakery for me to haunt! I have been devoted to Six Ping, but Kamalan is definitely making a steal for my heart. The bread here is big, fluffy, and beautiful. Kamalan has a lot of the same classics as Six Ping, but also has some unique choices. I think the bread here tastes less buttery and more healthy (as healthy as sweet bread can get? :P) than Six Ping. I also like how they post when each kind of bread comes out of the oven. That way you know when to come for certain breads and when they are the freshest. I tried the black sesame taro bread and the red bean loaf, and both were delicious, with a good filling to bread ratio. I like when the filling is braided into the loaf so each bite has a little bit of filling. So yums :P. I came another time and got the pumpkin bread and the mango cream cheese bread. Oh. My. Goodness. The mango cream cheese bread was SO good. It tasted like cheesecake inside bread (two of my favorite things?!?!). The pumpkin bread was really good too but paled a little bit in comparison to the mango cream cheese. I love this place!!! Since my husband and I found this place we've been going at least once a week. This bakery has a lot of items that aren't sold in the other regular Chinese bakeries but the prices are still inexpensive. We're trying to try them all. Also the staff is really nice, which isn't the norm for the bakeries around the area. So far my favorite is the mango cream cheese one and if I didn't want a filling I'd eat the orange cream one. The black sesame one is good if you just want one that's slightly sweet. We haven't gotten around to trying any of the savory ones though. But we're going to try some this month (hopefully I'll get some today. hehe) =) read more

This is a great mom and pop bakery. I absolutely would recommend. Their cakes are delicious and reasonably priced, and the employees have always been very friendly. My friend and I wanted to try the fish taiyaki ice cream thing, but there weren't any ready made. It seemed they weren't planning to make more that day because they were busy, which was a bummer. We've visited a bunch of times before but haven't ever been able to get the taiyakis because they usually stop making them at 8pm. The lady saw the disappointment on our faces and then said she could make it if we can wait 15 minutes. Really appreciated the extra effort. The things came out a bit smaller and less crispy than we expected but were still good. I've tried a variety of breads and those pandan cupcake things. I love those pandan cupcakes. Compared to all the other bakeries I've tried, Kamalan is definitely towards the top of my list. Recently, I bought a mango cake, which was delicious and perfect. They added the cutest Christmas decorations at no extra charge. Very reasonable price for a delicious, airy, not-too-sweet cake with real mango and other fruits. On a Monday at 11am, the selection was okay. Not everything was placed out yet, so I was a little disappointed at the number of options of fresh baked goods. But at least, unlike King Bakery, you can have a set of expectations of when they open and close. Danish BBQ pork | 4/5. Great texture. Nicely seasoned. Pork was juicy. Rather it tasted like ham. Coconut milk bun | 4/5. Taro Bun | 5/5. Unlike some other asian bakeries, their taro is not just a big fat blob in the center of the bun, but rather spread throughout, giving equal amounts of taro for each bite. Coconut Bun | 5/5. My wife thinks this is too heavy, but I'm all about it. It tastes like a macaroon a bit, but love it. Blueberry Cream Cheese Bun | 4/5. Good but have to eat it pretty quickly. Coconut Danish | 4/5. As you can tell, I like coconut. Love the texture. Overall, Kamalan is a gem and they're consistent with their products. Come in just to smell the air. Seriously. When that wonderful aroma of milk, butter, and sugar filled my nostrils, I turned to my equally enraptured husband and said, "This is exactly what joy smells like." Fresh bread and pastries are baked throughout the day, well into the afternoon, and sit patiently in their cooling trays off to the side of the cash register, filling the small space with their tantalizing fragrance. Once you're done drinking the air through your nose, grab a tray and a pair of tongs to find out just how little self control you have. Everything looks and smells fantastic here, though we've accumulated our favorites over the course of several visits. My absolute favorites are the bright green pistachio popovers, with their lighter-than-cloud textures and smatterings of toasted almond slices on top. We also bought an amazing loaf of croissant-like bread during our last visit that was covered on all sides with a lovely, sweet, slightly crunchy crust that tasted like nuts and coconut and made for an absolutely heavenly French toast the next morning. The tiny Japanese cheesecakes are adorable and beautifully fluffy, and the egg tarts are just about the best I've ever had. Really, I could go on here. All of the pastries and loaves average out to about two bucks and change, which is an absolute steal considering how much they can cost in American bakeries. Not everything is always labeled, but the ones that are have placards that delineate all of the ingredients used. Half of the fun for us is peering at a Pastry Doe and wondering whether it might be our new favorite. Each one is individually packaged at the counter after you purchase, so that they can keep until you decide to eat it...which is usually seconds after I leave the store when it comes to the popovers. But if super fresh and delectable pastries weren't enough, we discovered they make soft-serve filled taiyaki her - a fish-shaped pastry that's comically slit at the mouth so that a swirl of ice cream can be steered inside. The end result is a delicious ice cream and bread pairing that looks like a fish stuffed with dessert. We'd unfortunately just had dessert somewhere else before discovering it, or else we would have partaken of it but it's certainly on our list for our soon and future visit. A-OK place! My GF wanted to check out this bakery and it is located in the Dun Huang plaza. The location wasn't too hard to find it is right in front of Bellaire. I bought a green onion bun, pineapple bun and a black sesame taro bun. I tried each one and I'm just not impressed. The bread had a tough texture to it, my jaw got tired of chewing on it. Maybe it wasn't fresh? We also tried to Taiyaki and it's not the traditional Taiyaki with the filling in the middle. We got ice cream in our Taiyaki and the red bean was found towards the end at the tail. It was just OK, I prefer the freshly made red bean Taiyaki better. read more

My family prefers Chinese birthday cake because it is less sugary and more forgiving to our usual banquet style family gatherings. My aunt is also diabetic, so she appreciates being able to enjoy desserts. I came in on a Sunday and requested a 12" mango cake made fresh ($62). Turns out it was too big! Theses cakes go a long way, and while Chinese birthday cakes might not be your thing, this place is pretty reliable in terms of making it on time and beautifully so. The cake also survived the hour long drive to the 'burbs. I also picked a few random treats (blindly, without tasting first), including durian croissants, egg yolks cakes, and a creme puff baguette (assorted, $1-3). Everyone loved the egg yolk cakes, but the other two weren't so flavorful. Definitely recommend trying a few cakes beforehand. read more
