It was my first time at Six Ping for cakes and I loved all their cake flavors and decorations. I usually get birthday cakes from 85C bakery or Paris baguette, but Six Ping cakes got some great Asian flavors. We got the Pandan Durian cake for $56. It was a pretty big cake and loaded with so much durian inside. The frosting was perfect, not too sweet! The fruits on top were so refreshing. The durian they used tasted perfect, it was creamy and sweet. On the other hand, the pandan flavor was very subtle, and the cake part was pretty dry. Overall a really great Asian Bakery that has multiple locations with consistent freshness and quality. One of the oldest Bellaire Chinatown bakeries - although this is their second location in a "newer" part of Chinatown. Although the inside still feels dated, and there were slim offerings in the evening, I was able to try several items and they fell flat on my expectations considering they've been around for so long. Almond cookies tasted official and were too crispy. Ube mousse tart had too hard of a tart shell and wasn't as pleasant as I thought it would be. Cake pop was rather dry. The winner though was their bread offering that I had - I had one that was rather large in size and had buttery cream inside and was topped with a half of a peach. That was rather delectable by comparison! Service was typical of that of any old-school Asian bakery. Nothing remarkable. This was one of the most uncomfortable experiences we've had at a bakery. An employee kindly offered my child a small ice cream sample. Moments later, an older lady came out and aggressively yelled at my wife that we needed to PAY for it -- despite the fact that it was offered to us. What made it worse was that she immediately snatched the ice cream out of my child's hand and threw it in the trash. No explanation. No calm conversation. Just hostility directed at a child over something their own staff had given. There's a way to clarify a misunderstanding. Publicly scolding a customer and taking food out of a child's hand is not it. A quick visit around the Chinatown area and I was going on a bit of a unique day. It was Mid Autumn festival but surprisingly not very busy like I expected. I decided a few places and wanted to stop in Six Ping. I know there are a few locations but this is the one close by Friendship bbq. I was looking for mooncakes to celebrate the holiday and I have usually visited the location close by Viet Hoa often. But this would be my 2nd location if I am not there. Their selection is similar but with a few other items. There was a special of buy 2 get 1 free for mooncakes that day. I personally like the red bean and the other traditional flavors like mung bean or lotus are nice as well. Taro is another one I like to pick too. But additional this is my bakery for individual wrapped pineapple cake and selections of bread. The ham & cheese is a quick bite for me on the go. With the bread being fluffy and soft. Red bean and taro are usually my staple picks. But I never have any issues with any of the offerings. Overall I enjoy visits to Six Ping. The bakery is nice and simplistic in feel. It gives me a local neighborhood bakery vibe. I did pick the red bean turtle bread, ham & cheese, and took advantage on the mooncakes special. Personally for me, when in Chinatown, cash is king. Stumbled apon this bakery in the plaza while in town. Came in around 9 pm but on Yelp it said closed at 6 pm so not sure what's that about. It's a small bakery with a varieties of pastries such as sponge bread, hotdog buns, taro buns, cookies and cakes. When you walk inside, the left side along the walls have trays of buns laying around with the price and name of the buns. I grabbed coffee and pandan sponge bread. Then as I was checking out the lady said buy 2 pastries get 1 free on the counter next to her. I think because it was towards the end of the night she is trying to get rid of everything. I have stopped by here a number of times. It says open at 11, the sign says open. 3 times I have been there at 11, 2 times I waited until 11:15 and then a girl pulls up opens up and locks the door. Then she opened up to serve at 11:35. Another time almost the exact same thing. I pulled up yesterday and 11:15 I see 2 girls pull up they saw me at the front waiting not looking happy and waited in their car for a bit. I got in my car and started to drive off. They waited until my car was on westview and opened the car door. The owner of this store needs to know whoever they hired does not show up until 11:15-11:25 and take another 10-15 minutes to prep up. It is ridiculous. I don't see many people their at 11, but if you say open at 11 then be there at 10:30 to be ready to help customers at 11. If you are not going to do this then say 11:30 opening! read more

Growing up in the SF Bay Area, I am used to having access to my favorite Taiwanese pastries all the time. Unfortunately, despite the hype, Six Ping did not impress me. This location is pretty small and the baked goods selection was meh. There were some classic items like moon cakes and pork sung bread. I have been craving pineapple bread but the one I picked up here was a poor imitation of what I was hoping for. The pineapple layer on the surface was bland and chalky. Some of the breads were also mislabeled or not labeled. Another issue I had was that some of the baked goods were placed on shelves that were a bit too high off the ground for me to get a good look at them. The bakery goods reminded me of 85 C in that they seem more like trendy items to appeal to western consumers, like brightly colored Pandan pastries and stuff like that. I always like to get a Japanese style cheesecake for birthdays so I might try the one here and update my review in the future. read more

I love six ping their bread is soo good and their cake is somehow even better! I usually get the mango cake and it is covered with mango and topped with fresh fruit. The inside has 3 layers and the two layers between have even more mango and flan. It also doesn't have too much frosting which I think is a good things and it isn't too sweet! Any time I visit Houston, I make sure to visit Six Ping and get some bread. This time I walked in on a gold mine. The pandan coconut bread was out of this world. So tender and soft with a perfect balance in flavor. They also had a lot of toast options that looked amazing and I went with the taro toast. The bread is unbelievably soft and the swirls of taro were delicious. I would highly recommend buying any of their toast varieties!! And always always get some buoluo bread (sometimes referred to as pineapple bread). This has always been my favorite and the buoluo at six ping is some of the best I've had. I've been treating myself to their taro pudding cake for my birthday every year. $30 for a 28-inch cake that comes with free personalization, plastic knife, and candles. It's topped with fruit and a macaron. There's a layer of mashed taro and a layer of egg pudding (my favorite milk tea topping!). It's not overly sweet. The icing is more of a light whipped cream. It's a large cake - we usually freeze some of it to eat later (after eating all of the toppings). It freezes really well - we just defrost it in the fridge the day before we want to eat it. You can call a day before to reserve the cake (you don't have to). They usually have one available in the display, but I wanted to be extra sure I could get this one. read more

One of the better and more Innovative bakeries in Chinatown Houston with all kinds of delights. Sometimes they sell homemade Mochi sweets which are so chewy and delicious and drive me crazy. They have massive size macarons which I don't like very much. But they have a lot of other good stuff here and you should check them out. Their custard tart is probably my favorite item. Service isn't always great - at any of the locations. I've been to two locations many times - one is in Dynasty Plaza next to Mala and the other one - this one - is over in dunhuang which is newer I think. Literally across the street from each other but because people usually go by Plaza around here that totally makes sense. It's almost like putting one in another town or at least another suburb. We came on a Monday night just before closing, so lots of items were sparse, but that just goes to show how popular this place is! Last summer, I even made sure to stop by just to pick up a variety of goods to snack on for a road trip. The bakery has a lot to offer: breads, buns, cookies, cakes, mousse cups, fruit tarts, egg tarts, coffee, milk tea, and other drinks. Although there are several pros, there are also a number of cons. The buns are not always good (lots of bun but very little meat), the pineapple shortcake (overly sugary with a jam consistency), the sliced cakes (sometimes dry), the egg tarts (not flaky crusted), and some other things. I have my go-to items specifically: coffee cookies, almond crisps, mango mousse cake, corn and hotdog bread, cheesy bread, pandan sponge cake, and coffee cream cake. I've passed by this location so many times and I finally went in! It was a Sunday night and I had tried out the Kamalan Bakery facing Bellaire and people said they preferred that place to Six Ping. I've heard of Six Ping before - they're both non-vegetarian Taiwanese bakeries - but I see them as places to indulge so I don't often go in (too many temptations!). As it was getting late, I thought they wouldn't have too many goodies left so we walked in to see what they had. They still had a steady stream of customers. The help appeared to be young Asian men, probably new to the States. As you walk in, the sweet baked goods are to your right (pineapple cake, sun cake...) and the other sweet breads are on your left. The far left wall is dedicated to savory breads with pork floss and I guess what you could call Asian kolaches. There are refrigerated sections for mousse, cakes, and Asian jelly roll type sweets. They still had a good amount to offer! It was around 7 or 8 pm so I was surprised. We ended up picking a cream puff, a taro mochi wheat bread, and a rather heavy bread (it said custard but wasn't too custard like when I ate it) in the shape of a gold ingot. We ate the cream puff the same day. Light pastry encompassed a well filled cavity of lightly sweetened cream. It was stuffed. Tons of cream. Quite good and not too sweet! The taro mochi wheat bread was the next day's breakfast. The bread is soft and lightly sweetened and it was pretty decently filled. The taro was a bit crumbly though so try to eat it over a plate or something and the mochi was a good amount, but mainly situated in the middle of the bread. The little specks of brown in the bread was the "wheat" and it leant some texture (and fiber) to the whole experience. Not bad! The heavy bread ingot was last, eaten the morning of the third day. It's a lightly sweetened bread (slightly dry by this point but not horribly so) with a coconut and vaguely dry buttermilk/custard filling. The filling was only off to one side so it wasn't evenly distributed. It was also a bit crumbly but there was a good amount on the side it was found. It was good, but not a favorite. I do love the shape though! A pretty good experience overall. The breads were good and were an average of $1.50 to $2 each. Some of the sweets are a bit more at around $2.50 each. Service was decent (they rang you up and you paid) and the place seemed pretty clean. The only issue is Dun Huang Plaza is often crowded so parking can be a hassle at times. Everything has their own sign with prices but they often put two flavors on the same tray so as long as they weren't mixed up, you're good to go! Six Ping is located at Houston's Chinatown. It's one of the many Chinese bakery options at Houston. You may struggle with parking, but Six Ping's baked goods are definitely worth a try. I enjoy their pineapple cakes and their huge macarons. I wish their pineapple cakes were sold inside boxes as opposed to being individually wrapped. Because I don't know any Asians that only purchase one. The macarons make great gifts, and are super crunchy. They come in several different colors that are pleasing to the eyes. I also bought an Angry Bird cake from Six Ping. It was an enjoyment to shove two candles at the eye sockets then light the candles up so that the Angry Bird actually did look flaming mad. I would recommend Six Ping. Their bakery is solid, and Six Ping is the most readily available bakery at Houston since there are multiple locations. read more

I've tried a few of their bread (with filling or Chinese style) and I've been happy with them. I never tried the cake so I can't comment on those. Even when there's a line, it usually moves fairly fast. Bring cash. They take credit cards but I think there's a minimum. So if you just want to buy something small for your sweet tooth, they might upcharge you. Don't quote me on this, though. Only downside? Chinatown kind of service. No hospitality from the cashiers. I would suggest coming here in the morning to get your hands on more selections. In the late afternoon, a lot of the good stuff tends to run out. They use to have a dining area and a public restroom. But the store has since been half the size and no public restroom available. Their menu is now strictly bakery goods. No more Asian dishes. Dress code is casual. 4. Food - Tasty Taiwanese baking goods! They have savory as well as sweet pastry. All are individually wrapped, so you don't have to worry about other customers touching it.
