    Party Set
    Melodi D.

Such a cute little pastry shop nestled in the corner of an unassuming plaza. The place is clean, and the staff is sweet and welcoming. They offer a variety of pastries, most of them fruity. They also offer hot food, but I did not get any this time. As it was my first time here, I decided to get the Party Set, which is a set of 10 mini pastries. I would recommend this option to others coming here for the first time! Everything was absolutely delicious--fresh, flavorful, and not too sweet. I especially enjoyed the Mont Blanc. Overall, I absolutely recommend coming here!

My mentor told me that Chez Kobayashi had her favorite pastries in Houston. This is a mom and pop Japanese bakery that took over an old French bakery. They kept many of the old French pastries and gave them a Japanese twist. They make multiple fruit tarts, crepes, quiches, and croissant sandwiches. They also have a drink menu, and all of their drinks are so cheap. I got there at noon and there was already a line when I walked in. Most of the popular fruit pastries were already sold out so you need to go early for those. I originally wanted their green grape tart but it sold out, so I opted for the passion fruit tart instead. I also got an iced matcha latte since it was really cheap. Even though I didn't get the tart I wanted, the passion fruit tart was really good. It had a distinct Passionfruit flavor but not too overpowering or sweet. The crust was crumbly and the raspberry on top was fresh. The matcha latte was more on the bitter side but was smooth. I could tell they used high quality matcha though. I will definitely come back to try more pastries.

    Mont Blanc (must-try)

So happy to have a place in Texas where I can enjoy real Japanese cakes! It's honestly such a rare find, and every time I go to Houston, I have to stop by. I heard the owners moved here from Torrance, California -- and I'm so grateful they did. What a gift to have this kind of quality and care here in Houston. The Mont Blanc is a must. Not only is it visually stunning, but the flavor is absolutely perfect. You can truly taste the love and soul poured into every detail. I really wanted to try the cream puff too, but it was already sold out. (Next time!) The café space was full of people enjoying their afternoon, and the vibe was warm and peaceful. The service is always super friendly, which makes the experience even more special. I'll keep coming back as long as they're here!

The desserts were amazing. croissant and my son ordered the crème brûlée. My husband ordered some raisin pastry. Not sure what it was called. Average cost I spent per person was about eight dollars and that included a drink and the pastry so reasonable pricing here and great service !! The ladies at the counter brought us our food and our drinks, and they also cleaned up our table. The atmosphere was quaint, cute and cozy. Go and try awesome bakery items. Please check out Chez Kobayashi! I highly recommend this place if you're in the Memorial area.

This is a cute little cafe with French inspired Japanese baked goods, or maybe Japanese inspired French baked goods..? Either way they're French pastries. Walking in, its a decent sized cafe with lots of bright light and fun black/white wall art of various French queens and figures. They have coffee and teas along with various pastries and crepes. I ordered 4 pastries and each of them were amazing (though the Paris Brest was a bit of a disappointment, more on that later). The pastries themselves were very well baked, flavors were extremely balanced, and nothing was overly sweet. The tart shells were so buttery, crumbly, and light and the choux pastry crisp, moist, and light. My disappointment with the Paris Brest was that it was more a take on the famous dessert, in that it was almost like a strawberries and cream version (whipped cream, vanilla cream, and strawberries) rather than the traditional praline mousseline. It wasn't bad by any means, I just wanted that rich hazelnut/almond cream. Overall, this is definitely sort of a hidden gem, tucked in the corner of a random strip mall in the outskirts of Houston. Between the excellent customer service, amazing pastries, and bright space, I will definitely be returning!

Passion fruit tart, strawberry short cake, fruit tart

I ordered my pastries to go so I can't say much about the inside but they had a great looking selection. Of the things I ordered, the passion fruit tart was my favorite. It was just the right balance of tart and sweet and the crust had a fun almond taste. The fruit tart and strawberry short cake were good. They weren't mind blowing / change my life/ let me drive 30 min out good but they were enjoyable and I would go back if I was in the area again. It's a good classic spot.

raisin apple roll and iced Americano

First time at Chez Kobayashi Pastries This is a great little spot -- inviting, quiet, and clean. I ordered an iced Americano and it was robust and smooth. It's made after you order it. The standout for me was the raisin apple roll -- absolutely delicious! It had a tasty croissant-style crust that was perfectly flaky and buttery, with just the right amount of sweetness inside. The lady cashier asked if I wanted to warm it up. Make sure you warm it up if you're eating at the place. If you're in the area and want something warm, comforting, and a little special, definitely stop by. It was my first visit, but definitely not my last. I want to go back and try other pastries.

Clean. Friendly service. Beautiful and delicious tarts, pastries, and perfect iced matcha latte with oat milk. A "must get" are their tarts! We had the Mont Blanc chestnut tart and the mango tart. Both were not too sweet (which we like), and the fruit was fresh. The tart was beautifully presented and just delightful. We always bring Chez Kobayashi's tarts to friends' homes for special occasions or as a dessert to top off the night, and without a doubt, everyone always asks where we get the beautiful and equally delicious treats. Definitely stop in and support local! You won't be disappointed!

I was here for a staff meeting this morning. I had no idea what to expect but after a brief introduction, I realized this is a French style Japanese bakery. The sweet buttery aroma from the kitchen filled the entire restaurant. The menu is written on a black-board style wall paper. I loved how they defined the portion size of each coffee type on the adjacent wall. (I couldn't take a picture because someone was hogging the couch). I ordered the almond croissant and a cup of decaf tea. The croissant was really flaky and filling was soft. It had a good balance of both worlds. Not too sweet. Just palatable. I heard there are some Japanese culture presence in this part of town. Seiwa Market is less than 2 miles away. There are plenty of parking and the restaurant was very clean. I enjoyed every single bit of this place.

Can't comment on the service or ambiance of the shop since my dad brought the dessert home! We had the lemon tart, and just by first looks, I was really impressed! The presentation of their desserts is beautiful and neat. The crust was soft and easy to dig into. The lemon had a subtle tart flavor to it, and it wasn't overly sweet compared to the ones I've had before. It seemed to have a glaze over the top, like the ones on fruit tarts. Would definitely love to pay a visit to the bakery and check out their other desserts!

I got a iced matcha latte with almond milk, you can taste the almond milk and bitter matcha mostly, I would suggest adding a syrup for sweetness if u like sweet matcha, the lady handling the store was so sweet and kind, calm and sweet vibes all around! Their fruit tarts looked yummy I would try that next time.

Traditional Japanese pastries. Legit. Pricy but delicious. The tarts are really where it's at! Highly recommend.

Inside you will also find French pastries, coffees and teas, gelato, milkshakes, sandwiches and macaroons. I felt the most interesting items were the French pastries as they are cute and tasty as well. Also, they plate the pastries nicely when you dine in as an added bonus. I tried the Chocolate Royale and the Ruby. Chocolate Royale - a petit chocolate mouse slice with flat chocolate panels along the sides. It is delicate and tasty. If you're a chocolate lover, this is definitely up your alley. Ruby - visually this looks like a strawberry Hershey kiss, with red powder on the exterior and a top piece of foil to resemble foil on the wrapper of a hershey kiss. Inside, it's filled with a strawberry cream and has a chocolate base. I just wish there was more chocolate in this one. They have plenty of seating inside as well as along the sidewalk. Inside you have the more fancy tables, whereas outside, they're more weather resistant and not as upscale in appearance. The soft drinks to drink along with your sweets are in a cold case along the hotel side of the space and you just take them to the register as you order. One of the most surprising things when you come here are the relatively affordable prices as you might expect them to be more for being a coffee shop attached to a 5-star hotel with a helipad.

What's nudged this place up to 5 stars for me is they have really improved their coffee game, specifically their quality of cappuccino's. Previously it seemed more of latte, but now to me its a legit Capp. Their choice of pastries hasn't changed, which gives you a good assortment of choices and they have added an additional barista or server which also is a nice touch for service. The only niggling items, parking can be tough, so you'll have to either walk a block or be quick to find a place close by. Also note that if you pay with card it's a 2.5% charge so cash is better if you have it. We didn't but we know now for future. We had a great experience here and will definitely be back. Since we were already in the area after breakfast at TJ's Filipino Cuisine, we finally got the chance to stop by and try their baked goods for ourselves. We arrived early, so the bakery wasn't too busy yet. The bakers were busy prepping more goodies in the back while my cousin and I browsed all the Filipino baked goods we really miss from back home in the Philippines. They even had suman, sapin-sapin, biko, and other kakanin, which was nice to see. I specifically looked for the chicken empanada, and my cousin wanted to try the ube white chocolate chip cookie. We also saw different kinds of siopao and planned to come back later to buy some before heading back to San Antonio. We tried the ube white chocolate chip cookie first, but honestly we weren't totally satisfied. It tasted more like a regular white chocolate chip cookie with purple coloring and didn't really have much ube flavor. I also tried the chicken empanada. My cousin didn't like it because it was sweeter than expected--we were both expecting it to be savory. There seemed to be caramelized sugar in the outside of the pastry, which probably added to the sweetness. I still like it, though it was definitely sweeter than what I'm used to. Red Ribbon's chicken empanada is still my favorite. Later that day before leaving Houston, we came back for the siopao we planned to take home. We finally decided to just buy a couple pieces for ourselves, heat them up in the bakery, and try them fresh. When we saw the price for a four-pack, we were honestly disappointed. It felt expensive for the size. The siopao wasn't huge, and while I like the dough, there wasn't much chicken filling inside. For the portion, taste, and quality, it felt overpriced. Overall, it's probably not worth making another trip back for us. We did enjoy the cassava ube suman, and I like the chicken empanada, but not enough to drive all the way to Houston just for those. If I live nearby, I might come back to try other baked goods, but based on this visit, I'm not sure the rest would impress my palate. I still give them credit for cleanliness and customer service, although we did notice fruit flies on one of the shelves and reported it. The staff was friendly, and the bakery itself was welcoming. At the end of the day, since they're a bakery, the expectation is great-tasting, quality, mouthwatering Filipino breads, pastries ", and kakanin. While some items were enjoyable, overall it just didn't quite live up to the hype for us.
