This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Park Slope. Their fish just seems fresher and better quality than the other places in the area. Service is great too, but what really makes them stand out is the creative rolls they offer like the jpan roll (spicy tuna, salmon, white tuna & mango wrapped with layer of avocado & rice pancake). The chef is clearly not afraid to experiment, how else would you come up with a spicy tuna and grilled banana roll? Basically one of Jpan's rolls should be enough to fill you up (but ordering just one roll would be crazy, you want to try them all!) read more

The house specialties we read about on Yelp lured us into Jpan one Saturday, but nothing quite lived up to expectations. -The tuna dumpling looks super cool, like a big red onion on a plate, but under the thinnest layer of tuna is the largest pile of minced crab stick. So. much. crab. stick. The combination of sauces, ginger on one half the plate, a red vinegar on the other, complemented the dish well, but maybe if the dish was renamed to crab stick craziness, it'd better set expectations for people who are into that sort of thing. - Volcano (spicy tuna and spicy salmon with avocado wrapped with crispy asian pancake, served with eel sauce and sweet spicy sauce) tasted like a chewy version of a tuna roll, nothing striking or special - The phoenix roll (eel, tuna, and mango, topped with crab stick, almond, and dried cranberry, served with wasabi aioli and eel glaze) sounded eclectic and fun, but there wasn't any eel - just eel glaze, and the cranberries were a bit too much - completely underwhelming. Couldn't have asked for a more fresh or delicious anniversary dinner! Everything was so fresh, and so flavorful, I was slightly blown away. Boyfriend and I were in the neighborhood to go to Sushi Katsuei (haven't been yet) but missed the lunch hour and were too early for dinner so we went to Jpan instead, and I don't regret a thing! We started with the rock shrimp which I highly recommend. It came with a bit of salad that had a light but tasty lemony dressing. It was cooked perfectly and was crispy and flavorful. We got the winter roll, crazy spicy roll, refresh roll, and the double tuna roll. They were all incredibly delicious but I have to say my favorite was probably the refresh roll. I have had a lot of sushi, though I admit I usually get similar rolls. Maybe a roll like this is common and I've been too stuck in my own world to venture out, but I can't recall even seeing anything like this on any menu of any sushi place I've been to. It stuck true to its name, as well. The thin lemon slice on top is truly refreshing. This place KNOWS how to do sushi the right way! Stopped in for lunch (only until 4:30) and ordered the $9 special which includes Miso soup, salad with ginger dressing, and choice of 2 sushi rolls. It was so delicious that I had to order another whole lunch special to-go!The atmosphere and service alone are definitely worth the money! What I like about it is that there's nothing too flashy about the place. It's just your typical, no frills sushi establishment. They're not trying to sell you the scenery. They don't put unnecessary ingredients on the plates that you can't even eat. The food speaks for itself. It's fresh, tasty and on-point. The service was excellent as well, especially since she was the only server running around the place and it didn't seem to bother her at all. I think I may become a regular. read more

I've grown up eating at Jpan since I was 4 years old (I'm 20 now!) and they treat us like family there. The sushi is so fresh, they have so many great varieties of rolls -- especially the house special rolls are so amazing and inventive, and the service is top notch. The rolls are big so you get your moneys worth. Also the non-sushi items on their menu are really great and worth trying -- I really like the yaki udon and shumai/gyoza that they have. Best Japanese restaurant in Park Slope hands down, I will always hold Jpan fondly in my heart :) read more

The Jpan roll is too much fanfare for its execution. Lots going on but texture and taste lost points because it is too soft and fell flat with the flavor combination. Other rolls were alright, can't recall anything that was particularly great. Not impressed with the volcano roll at all. The bathroom is odd with the urinal right next to the toilet. Gross...? There are parts about sushi that are easy to love or hate : fresh fish, consistent quality, etc. Jpan has those covered. I always order a combo of hot appetizers and special rolls. The beef negimaki is a must have , my favorite rolls are the crazy spicy (jalapeño and salmon tempura) and the country roll. 5 stars are earned here from above and beyond service all the time. Easy stuff like knowing your address from your telephone number goes a long way. But last night I asked for tamari with my sushi ( Tamari is gluten-free). The hostess called me back to remind me that the fantastic roll was not gluten-free, is this all OK? Of course it was, I get Tamari because soy is bad for you . I LOVE this place! Nice little atmosphere and I love sitting in the outside back patio area. The service is always very wonderful and friendly. Every time I come I always order the King Crab Salad - it is so delicious. I have had several of their sushi rolls and they have never disappointed. I saw the Tuna Dumpling this evening and was immediately intrigued as was everyone else on the patio with us and the person that ordered it raved about it. This was our first time eating at Jpan upon arrival which was early around 6 PM we were greeted by a delightful waiter who could not do enough for us the entire time we were there- when appetizer we ordered the volcano roll and then we had a deep fried banana mango shrimp roll some salads and some of the various rolls. We really enjoyed the food it was creative well prepared and delicious. Around 7 o'clock it started getting very busy and I noticed that they do a busy take out as well. I'm moving from Park Slope soon and wish I found out about this place sooner! So fresh and the price point is fire. I always vow to never get sushi delivered, because dine in = far superior if I'm spending that amount for food I want it top notch, but I was lazy and decided to order delivery from here on a Saturday night. I walk past Jpan all the time since living in Park Slope and I'm so happy I finally decided to try it for dinner! My friend and I came and we're overwhelmed by all the options on the menu! I finally decided to try the sushi pizza as an appetizer - salmon, tuna, and whitefish with spicy mayo and eel sauce topped with roe and green onion - was out of this world! The fish was fresh and all together the pizza was super flavorful! I also had the fire island roll - shrimp tempura, avocado, topped with spicy tuna - for my entre and it was also absolutely delicious. The service was great, super attentive, and the restaurant itself was super cute and a great dining environment. I'm so happy to use my 100th review for my absolute favorite sushi spot in BK! Let me frame this will my preferences: I LOVE creative sushi rolls. I also really love totally plain sashimi, but I think it's fun to see what cool combos a sushi chef will come up with for their special rolls. Jpan knocks this ball out of the park. I am slowly but surely working my through the whole page of them and have not had a miss yet! Sure, there have been some that weren't my taste (the Pheonix is a bit spicy for me) but all have a unique flavor profile and are balanced enough that you can taste each ingredient. To me, that's expertise. Here's just a sampling of tasting notes: Fantastic roll- umami, super rich tasting. Grilled Chilean sea bass w/ lots of avocado Tropical Roll - nice smooth eel & tuna start w/ crisp pineapple finish. Great w/ touch of salty soy sauce Jpan Roll - my fave so far! No rice, so it's just full on raw fish goodness w/ a touch of mango sweet and wasabi drizzle spice Red Phoenix appetizer - I never like crab stick but this is the perfect use of it as a blank slate background to subtle play of rich white tuna and tangy sauce against bright cilantro Spicy tuna twister- another fave! Regular spicy tuna enveloped in avocado, surrounded by crunch and drizzled. No surprises, all delish. It's the Sushi equivalent to Mac n cheese, predictable but comfortingly yummy. Definitely check out the appetizers too! A lot of them repeat themes from the special rolls but in creative re-interpretations or presentations. I met up a friend for dinner. She was craving sushi and asked me "Have you been to jpan in Park Slope?" My initial response was is that the new way to say Japan then thought a sushi restaurant called J-pan? How lame. I was pleasantly surprised by this place in Park Slope. We got the $25 three-course meal and then an extra roll. The portions are large and the rolls are yummy. We started with a big bowl of seaweed salad followed by the seared tuna app. The seared tuna app was amazing. It was pretty and yummy with portabello mushrooms and this creamy yummy sauce. The 2011 roll is like so this year. It's really good with eel, salmon, tempura, crab and spicy mayo. We also got the J-pan roll which was also scrumptious. So what if the name of this place is cliche. The food and great service is awesome here and well-priced. We left totally totally full and happy. read more

Sooooooo, the dinner box was a hit with the finicky S.O. I scoured YELP for places that had Pork tonkatsu for him. So he got the box, with tempura and tonkatsu and he walked out full. And happy. Decent lunch specials. Lunch for me was the tuna and salmon combo for $11.25 today. My friend got the 2 sushi roll special for $8.25. You have about 20 options for this roll combo. It comes with soup and salad, so you get your fill and sushi fix all in one convenient package. The combo comes with a tuna/salmon/cucumber roll and two pieces each of salmon and tuna. This is my fave Americanized sushi place in all of NYC. I will take a trip out to Brooklyn for the monkey roll. All of their specialty rolls are killer! But the monkey is my favorite - shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado and three sauces (think sweet and spicy). My roomies fave is the crazy spicy roll - salmon tempura, avocado, scallion and jalapeño with a crazy spicy sauce. I don't love tempura at all, but this place does it right. J'pan also offers killer service. The waiters are so sweet and attentive! The atmosphere is also pretty basic, but I love their outside patio. My staple. We eat here ALL the time. And by ALL, I mean at least three times a week. The staff are so sweet. They remember everything. They are so attentive. They are accommodating. We usually order take out and the delivery is super fast. They always get the order right, on time, and with a smile. This is a family friendly place and the weekends can get slightly crowded. The wait is never unbearable because there is another sushi place across the street. This place is clearly the better of the two. read more

He was actually referring how much of the seemingly insurmountable volume of sushi we ordered was eaten, but little did he know that these six words would be true in more ways than one. We did do a VERY good job in picking this restaurant for the evening. I would describe it as a nice litle place that oozes of Manhattan as a hidden gem in this up and coming neighborhood. Wow. I don't know how this place has such good reviews... Perhaps the NON-SUSHI dinner specials are good, but that's not what we ordered. Sushi and sashimi special: a variety of sashimi and nigiri sushi plus a california roll endowed with a sprinkle of roe on top. Sashimi was almost INEDIBLE, not fresh, stringy and mushy with the consistency of drenched bread. The last thing I want from my sashimi is to have my teeth flossed with fish sinew. California roll (aka the most uneventful sushi on earth) actually saved us from starvation because we couldn't even force-feed ourselves the rest of the meal. I ordered the phoenix roll even though I try to avoid "creative" interpretations of sushi with 4 types of fish bombarded with sauce and saturated in sweetness. AVOID. Being a loyal follower of yelp, treating it as my bible, you people led me wrong this time! It was a sticky cranberry mess with something that may resemble a roll underneath and had a hint of SRIRACHA(??? Why!!!) Bf ended up probing remaining sashimi like plastic play-doh specimens. Awful "Jpan special rolls" which are riceless rolls with Avocado. Creamy and you can barely taste anything. 2. Trolls and Warlocks and Adonis DNA!!! We've lived in Park Slope for a year...constantly Let Down and Hangin' Round...Crushed like a bug in the ground...upon eating at one of the slopes many eateries. It's a sad reality when high quantity of choices doesn't translate into better for you and for me and for the whole group. Case-in-Point Park Slope lacks quality food. It's Park Slope's off-putting melange of pseudo ethnic eateries - watered down just enough to dissolve the hardened exteriors of our stroller pushing adversaries on 7th Avenue that really imbibe our thoughts of dining within the neighborhood. It's this general rule of thumb that causes causes 1 of 2 things: 1) When eating locally, a longer walk to 4th Ave...where the touch of Gownas' abrasive and sooty thumb allows food to become fully realized rather than grotesquely contrived. 2) When completely annoyed by eating in our neighborhood but lazy enough to stay close to Park Slope, an elevated train ride to Carol Gaahhhhdens where some inexplicable higher level of quality has become the resonating theme for an area that has successfully made a milkshake out of Brooklyn Italians, Hipsters, The French and Yuppsters. We have a way to go to try enough places worthy of a respectable sample population of Park Slope but we have tried our fair share. Applewood, Song, El Pollo, Peppinos, Russo's, Sweet Melissa, Juventino, Sette Enoteca and others have all failed to impress much at all. A few surprises lurk in the shadows...obviously Bogota can't be argued with...it's just too much damn fun and the Sancocho is just too damn delicious and Baluchi's Indian of all places far exceeded any preconceived notions we may have had. But then there's Sushi. We've been simply and plainly pigging out to mediocre Sushi around the corner from our apartment at Shinju II. Why? Well because they exist in a state of perpetual GRAND OPENING where mediocre Sushi can be had for the outrageous price of $1. Argue with this (in any reality that isn't spoiled fish) and your soul will shrivel and die. But then my GF's second birthday diner in 2 nights allowed a Jpan a try. We had meager expectations but weren't prepared for what happened next. Jpan is amazing!!!! Despite the name, it's amazing!!! It really is. I first got some sake for the table and quickly Hamachikama (obviously...only a fucking fool abstains from Fish Collar) and Negimaki (thin beef rolled with scallions)...very tasty. Jpan has this $25 three course thing that more than serviceable. Each course has options...diverse and dynamic options. There's the soup or salad option. Either Seafood Mushroom soup or spicy oyster miso soup or seaweed salad or octopus salad. NOT BAD, right?!?!?! NOTE: The Seafood Mushroom soup is FUCKING amazing and the far better choice of the 2 soups. It's jam packed with flavor and mushrooms galore!! Wow. Then there's a list of about 6-7 small plates to choose from...our party of 4 was pretty much swept away by the seared white tuna over mushroom. The WHITE TUNA at Jpan is very very very good. It's got a creamy appeal and a clean taste...delicious stuff. For the main course...we had 2 sushi platters and 2 sashimi platters...both weren't at all boyish in appearance. A good mix of sashimi: salmon, tuna, white tuna, fluke, stripped sea bass and I think one other. Delicious food...good service...not overly crowded...great value (you get a lot of food...RARE in sushi places). Sushi is raw fish...it's not rice inundated wtih sweet and/or spicy sauce formed into a log with token fish stuffed inside. Jpan made me quite happy mainly because their food was delicious, but mostly because their food was delicious. This is by far the best sushi in the neighborhood. The fish is of better quality than most other sushi places and the service is unparalleled. Whenever I call for delivery, I am warmly greeted as if by a friend (seriously) and have the same experience when I meet the delivery person at the door. Their sushi/sashimi combo for 2 is delicious, and is enough to feed 3 or 4. And I echo other commentator's encouragement to get the Fire Island Roll - it's delicious - but truth be told, I think almost of their special rolls are quite good. The $18 dinner box is a fabulous deal, with a bunch of permutations so you can order what you like. I always get tempura and sushi, and both are quite good. I just ordered $30 worth of food from Jpan, as I'm spending the evening alone and wanted something special. Turns out I just threw that money out the window, because I'm still gonna be eating sandwiches. I had the Cold Spinach with House Dressing - a little fibrous, but it tasted fine. Then I tried the Agedashi Tofu, which again was fine, but the restaurant opened a few weeks ago, and it already tasted like old grease. My biggest complaint and disappointment is that the "Three Famous Sushi Dinner" had disintegrating tuna, and the 'three spicy mix roll' is literally falling apart before I can even pick it up(all of which looks extremely unappetizing) So, I didn't eat it. I'm not in the mood to take the risk. I'm throwing away an $18 plate because I'm seriously concerned that I'll get food poisoning if I take a bite. Not thrilling for a restaurant that just opened and looked promising. I was really excited to try this place... but now I must go make myself a turkey sandwich. If you're looking for sushi in the neighborhood... Mura or Oshima at least have fresh fish, and wouldn't think of serving their customers fishy tuna.
