We were in need of some sushi, and it was entirely too nice to eat indoors. Osaka looked like the best backyard sushi in the neighborhood, so we headed over. This backyard is big, and nice, and only slightly overrun with mosquitoes. They are nice enough to provide bug spray if you forgot it. There is also at least one large rodent running around behind the fence. I told my kids it was a squirrel, so let's go with that. It didn't bother me anyway, and if it bothers you, you may need to change cities. One thing you should know about me is that if there's a sake on the menu called Demon Slayer, I'm going to order it. You should too, it was tasty and the bottle is adorable. We also ordered a few standard items (salmon avocado rolls are my kids' thing), and something called a "classic roll" which I thought was an appropriate name for the classic sushi combination of shrimp tempura, lobster salad, avocado and cucumber wrapped in soy bean paper. I'm sure it was the first thing the first sushi master rolled up in Japan on the day they invented sushi. And it was delicious. Actually, everything was very solid and the service was excellent, so we'll be back for that backyard sushi fix. read more

Unfortunately, after my food was delivered, my server didn't return to my table for about 20 minutes. Great casual sushi sport. The waitstaff was very friendly. I also got a hot green tea, and it was the best tea I've ever had. I think it had crumbled nori in it. It added a soft, unique flavor to the tea, which I loved. Also, side note: bathroom is super clean and cute. After not eating here for honestly years we decided to order in tonight. We got 2 handrolls (yellowtail scallion and spicy tuna), a bunch of sushi pieces (yellowtail, salmon, striped bass, sea scallop...), garden salad (I just love the ginger dressing), shumai, and a miso soup. All was so so delicious, the fish was so fresh and buttery. Highly recommend the king salmon and the yellowtail pieces, but everything was good. Everything also arrived within 35ish minutes which is pretty good for sushi in this neighborhood. Their pricing is also not bad at all. 8.10.23-I had to come back and edit this review as I am now bumping them down a star (5 to 4). This is because the past two times I have called to order or ask a question the staff has been extremely rude and annoying. Today someone took all my information for my order then passed the phone to someone else and they had me redo it all. They are not accommodating and told me I "ordered incorrectly" and HAD to add more. I understand it is hard to here on the phone sometimes but there is no reason to be rude. Unfortunately this is something that needs to be pointed out for anyone with dietary restrictions. I picked up a takeout from here this evening - all vegetarian sushi as I am a lifelong veggie. I ordered vegetable gyoza along with some rolls. back at home eating the gyoza I knew they tasted a little off on further inspection I believed it to be meat. I called the restaurant and they casually informed me that they had accidentally given me pork gyoza instead. Obviously I'm horrified as I'm a vegetarian for ethical reasons but the guy was so blasé like it was no big deal - told me to bring them back and pick up the right ones!! Honestly I'm disgusted and feel pretty violated and extremely upset. But the cavalier attitude to mistakenly serving pork - of all meats is just unacceptable. Craving sushi in a neighborhood without too many Japanese restaurants, we decided to give Osaka a try and it really hit the spot! The menu options here are great and the sushi rolls were good too. The dinner bento box deal is an especially good one - for $24 you get a ton of food. We got the green tea soba noodles and the age dashi tofu to start. Both dishes were really good and I'd order them again. We especially enjoyed the delicate flavor of the green tea noodles, give those a try! I ordered the spicy tuna roll and the sweet potato roll and enjoyed them both. The tuna was fresh and super tasty. My boyfriend got the dinner box with teriyaki salmon, pork katsu, a sushi roll, and rice - all of this for $24 is a steal! Like other reviewers have mentioned, service is a little slow/scattered. But this just means I wouldn't come here in a huge rush, like if you were going to see a movie at the theater across the street (which the server asked us). When Osaka first opened years ago at the very same location where it is presently, I was a frequent dine in patron. I always enjoyed it very much-- and was aware it was pricier than other local Japanese restaurants. I decided to give it a go for takeaway recently after nearly a decade, and some things have not changed. For example, what would be considered and priced a basic roll, the Alaskan, is a few dollars more at Osaka. They're just more expensive than other places and I don't know why. But on to the order. Since we were buying for 3 people, we decided to select: the warm soba noodle dish with chicken (comes with a side salad) and 6 rolls (or 2 per person). I wasn't at the restaurant but emphasized to my sister, who was giving the order, for extra ginger. I love lots of ginger with my sushi. After literally a wait that felt like an eternity, the order and dinner was ready to go. I was hungry and anxious to try again after so long. These were the rolls ordered: two spider rolls (shrimp tempura), veggie tempura roll, Philly, Alaskan and spicy tuna (again, all priced above the norm). My rolls were the veggie tempura and spicy tuna crunch. I thought the veggie was outstanding with a variety of vegetables such as brocolli and asparagus. It was cut into 5 pieces. The tuna, 8 skinny pieces was equally good. Overall, we enjoyed our rolls and agreed the fish was fresh and the rice was cooked just right. Some of the rolls fell apart at the seams though. BTW, the soba noodle dish was delicious but the chicken was overcooked. The annoying part of this order was that despite the request for extra ginger, there was hardly any included considering we had six rolls. Although we were assured it would be included, they also briefly mentioned more ginger was at an additional cost. This was super frustrating since they combined all rolls in 2 trays and the amount of ginger was minuscule. Very stingy. Same with the salad. The dressing didn't run evenly with the lettuce. Therefore, only leaves remained without dressing. Unacceptable. I am wondering why their individual ratings jump from either 1 star to 5 on Yelp. At any rate, although I enjoyed the rolls, I prefer to patronize a restaurant that is on top of their game and more accommodating. read more

I decided to give this Japanese place two opportunities but both times were not so good. The woman working there took forever and when I went there for lunch, I asked for a check when I received my lunch and it still took quite a while. Both times I got the Bento Box special. At dinner, I asked to substitute the California roll for another very simple role as I don't like California rolls and they did as I asked and it turned out that a simple roll was an extra dollar on the bill which wasn't told to me when I asked about changing the roll (the roll I got for substituting wasn't that good either.) The gyoza were watery the 2nd time and they're clearly some bad packaged brand. The beef negimaki was alright. 6 pieces for lunch is not bad but it better be that much for the price (I don't think it was that many more pieces for dinner in fact.) The throwaway under-cooked vegetables on the side are there more for looks rather than flavor. Both times, the service was subpar. Shoutouts to the music in the background as it introduced me to El Corazón by Arno Elias. Good piece of Spanish music. The food here is just not that good and not that much cheaper that you might as well pay a couple more bucks more and go to Hibino or another spot which serves actual good Japanese food. read more

Great sushi, especially in Brooklyn which is a borough often devoid of decent Japanese restaurants. I have had sushi from multiple spots in Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. This, hands-down, beats the competition. You can tell by the temperature and the flavor of the fish that this is the real deal. Other places will have fish that is ice cold (previously frozen) or room temperature (not safe to eat!). Osaka fish is in the Goldilocks zone. . . just right. Firstly, the decor is great. They moved into this new location (right next door) and it is the perfect size for them. The sushi, as i already said, is good. Great uni - staggeringly flavorful! The service is excellent: our server was so sweet and attentive without being overbearing. I will definitely be back here. I've walked by it so many times without stopping in, much to my chagrin! A couple things to improve on: the miso eggplant dish was a bit too oily. Needed more miso and less oil. Also, it would be very helpful to have the menu list a description of some of the items. For example: what's in the handrolls (dragon, spider, &c)?; how many pieces come with the ala cart sushi and sashimi? Opening the menu for the first time can be a bit overwhelming! read more

We are visiting from San Diego and decided to check this place out for lunch -- just a 3 block walk from where we are staying. The chicken teriyaki and yakisoba lunch options were delicious, filling and super-reasonable in price. We ordered the yakisoba with wild shrimp, which was excellent quality and cooked just right. We tend to be very critical but this place checked all the boxes. Comfortable low key atmosphere, attentive and friendly staff, an excellent meal and a great value. We will be back. read more

Been going to Osaka for years now it is almost like a second home. The staff there are so friendly and always are willing to start up a conversation. Their sushi is always amazing. Ratio is something hard to get right and Osaka definitely does! I sometimes go to other Japanese cuisine restaurants around Brooklyn and get chicken catsu, but nothing ever compares to Osaka's. The environment is great, especially for kids. They are good seating options in the front and in their beautiful backyard. They have a fish tank with lots of fish which has always stood out to every kid that walks through the doors of Osaka I have nothing else to say other than go see for yourself, you won't be disappointed. read more

Osaka beats any sushi I had while deployed in Japan, and I lived there for over 30 years.

The standard sushi rolls: yellowtail and scallion; spicy salmon crunch and the white tuna sashimi were very good. Was disappointed in the chefs classic roll which just wasn't that interesting. The fluke with garlic sauce appetizer was simply fabulous, next time we will each order one of those instead of sharing!! The tempura batter for the shrimp and vegetable tempura is not greasy, it was lovely, light and crisp (though they need a larger cup for the tempura dip). Was surprised the rock shrimp was battered, though good it may be better with less batter or none and we will probably skip it next time. I would absolutely avoid the edamame soup and the carrot soup. These two soups were under whelming, plain, tasted watered down and under seasoned. We will go back again for all the things we liked, but we will try one miso hoping that might be good. The service was excellent! read more

Osaka used to be a good restaurant, but in the last few years they have taken a serious downward turn. The restaurant is understaffed, with freaked out and stressed out staff that make tons of mistakes, react with anger when you point out their own incompetence, and sometimes don't even bother dealing with customers. A few months ago we waited for an hour for our food, and when we complained the waitress started crying, saying that they were overwhelmed with orders. On another day we sat there for 45 minutes without being able to even put in our order (we decided to leave). Recently we ordered takeout and they sent the wrong order, and when we called to complain they reacted furiously as if it was our fault. They never fixed it and we were stuck with $100 worth of someone else's food that we did not want (and were charged for). We are still waiting for them to call us back. It is cheaper and faster to fly to Osaka, Japan, to get sushi. read more

The food is decent and if you are looking for a kid friendly spot to feed the hungry tots this place is accepting of the little ones. Sushi here has always been very fresh and delicious. I frequent this restaurant during lunch time. I never really take a walk on the wild side here. I order salmon avocado rolls, salad, and a miso soup. Somehow I am always very happy. The salad is not the ice burg salad that most Japanese restaurants serve. Miso soup is not overly salty. My server, Sophia, was very knowledgeable, professional, and provided excellent customer service skills. G really loves this place and this is one of G's spots. They had cute little tatami section in the front of the restaurant...charming. I love salmon skin salad and I was hoping this place would make it as good as Mikado back in Texas. When I received the salmon skin salad, I was really disappointed - the salmon skin wasn't crisp and the salad was more of a seaweed salad than a salmon skin one. I didn't even know the salad would come with seaweed. But then again, their menu wasn't very descriptive either. I hate places where they have all these names and they automatically think you know what a "Rock N' Roll", "A A C", or "Neghiamaki" maki has in them. Because I obviously didn't think my salmon skin salad would only as a decoration for a seaweed salad. I ordered spicy yellow tail roll along with the salad but it took forever to come out and when it finally did come out I wasn't sure why it had a crunch. G felt bad that I didn't like the restaurant but I think this restaurant would be a lot better if they revised their menu and added more description to their selection. Because perhaps then I would make a better choice on my rolls or appetizer. However, the service here is incredible, our hot tea was always filled to the top. Have been to Osaka before the pandemic and loved it. In my opinion, the best sushi in Brooklyn, perhaps in all of New York. And now they deliver because of covid. Always on time, always delicious. Try the spicy mussel soup, the oshinko appetizer, the shrimp shumai, and pretty much any of their special rolls. Going against the review grain here... as I've never had a good experience at this place. A few takeout orders and one in-person visit, and Osaka is off my list of places I'll ever eat again. For starters, the roll prices are just unreasonable for common items, which you would assume means top quality fish. This is not the case, at least anything that I've eaten. Not once, but twice, have I received huge fatty, stringy chunks of meat both skin and in once case pieces of bone in the rolls. I almost cut my mouth on one, thankfully I didn't swallow it. To be honest, I guess that's my own fault for eating quickly. However, the sushi chefs here are inexperienced, overworked, underpaid, or just don't give a crap what their customers are eating; And to be fair, I guess I wouldn't either, after witnessing staff shouting and fighting during my only visit. As this place has received quite a few positive reviews, I feel like an outsider without something positive to say, but nobody I've shared this food with has enjoyed it either. Something is always off, texture or flavor, or actual fish smelling funny. That, or the service being rude or slow on top of it all. Oh yeah, and the prices being much too high for the simple sushi ordered. $7 for a spicy tuna roll? Come on. Most places in the area aren't over ~$5/5.50 for better quality food. Maybe they're compensating for lack of business and serving substandard pieces of fish? Whatever it is, it should be fixed... though I guess it's not important because my stance on never returning is firm. read more

Eh. Went here for the first time in months for dinner last night and forgot what I liked about this place. The sushi just wasn't as fresh as I had remembered while the prices were as high as I remembered. I ordered chirashi (scattered sushi) and asked for no shellfish which they confirmed and promptly (or rather, after awhile) brought the dish out with shrimp and crab. So I had to send it back and wait some more for it after already a pretty long wait. They do have some pretty cool appetizers though, like Hamachi Kama. Who knew that yellowtail jaw would be so delicious? Anyway, I'm not done with Osaka, just took my enthusiasm over it down a notch. My friend in I popped in here because my regular sushi spot was closed and we wanted wine and rolls. It was empty, aside from a family of 5. We ordered the scallop "ceviche" against my better judgment, because I always get shrimp shumai as an appetizer, but the description sounded good. Then we ordered some rolls and plum wine. The ceviche came out and instantly we regretted it. My friend tasted it first and then myself. I couldn't get myself to swallow it. Let's just say it was raw scallops on a bed of salad and tomatoes. In no way was it "ceviche." When we called our waitress Sophia over an asked if we could change for another appetizer she looked shocked and proceeded to tell us if nothing is wrong with the scallop she can't change it. Management was also no help. We said we didn't like it, that wasn't what we expected. After that exchange and every time that she came over she kept telling us how everyone loves it. I got annoyed and said well, everyone's taste is different. Stop trying to convince us to eat something we just told you we don't like. I was completely done with her when she asked if we wanted a box for it to take to our family to try. No! When we got the bill and saw we were still charged for something we didn't like or eat, we decided that would be her tip. Osaka won't be seeing us again. Mitoushi needs to open back up. We went one summer during a heat wave. Some white transplant chick was the hostess who didn't even know what netta was. The door kept opening and flies were coming in. It was really unsanitary. Sushi was totally forgettable and fugazzi. The flies were actually on the sushi in the case. I think I will skip it and not have flies with my meal next time and save that for the TV show Bizarre foods. My favorite place is to sit at the bar when it's cold outside and outdoors when it's warmer. I wouldnt recommend going on a date here - too bright. I would recommend going with friends though. The sake flows easily and the staff is gratefully pleasant. Not too big a crowd, the only negative thing about Osaka is the amount of space and the slightly too light mood of the walls. A friend and I shared the namesake sushi and sashimi for two - because neither one of us is choosy with sushi... yet. It was tremendous. The colors were so bright and heavy. I wish I took a picture of it so I could diagram it on flickr. The sashimi (salmon, mackerel, tuna, giant clam) came in very large pieces and was a textural delight. The sushi was great too; the size was just right, I felt like it belonged in my mouth. We had so much food! I swear the next morning I had baby fish swimming in my belly. The menu has a huge selection. Just about everything I read turned me on. I will need many more "next time"s to get a full appreciation of Osaka. How many next times do I need? Peter K.'s photos made us come here. We weren't disappointed! The waiter gawked at the size of our order, which sort of upset me because I hate it when the server makes me feel piggy. He was right, though. Maki is huge but well made and miso soup is generous with tofu and the pleasing addition of mushrooms. The $17 sashimi regular is an amazing bargain with 15 slabs of fish too thick to fit in the mouth: tuna, salmon and two kinds of white fish surrounding decoratively sliced surf clam. This is a good place for creative maki. The specialty maki at most places is either unoriginal or a frightening concoction of dissonant fishes, batter and sweet/spicy sauce. The millennium roll is really nice: toro topped with spicy scallop. Lobster tempura roll is neatly banded with crisp cucumber, and mexican roll is a great spicy crispy tuna dusted with bonito powder. Nice to know special rolls don't have to incorporate everything in the kitchen. Also, the edamame is out of control. Think 100+ peapods. read more

I was so happy to have found this place while living in Brooklyn - the Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill area. It was only minutes away from the apartment that I was subleasing, and that was by foot. S and I deemed it one of our favorite restaurants in the area. The fish was fresh [We witnessed the sushi chef carving out slabs from the giant tuna!], and the dishes YUMMY! I think the waitress was Chinese, but I'm not going to hate on the place. In fact, I loved it. S is a big guy, so we usually ordered quite a bit. It's not the best Japanese restaurant in the area nor is it authentic Japanese as employees are obviously a mix of Chinese and Latino and you'll hear Chinese music playing through the speakers. But, it will do for a regular fare. As a mom, I have to say that their staff was thoughtful. We were parking our stroller right outside because the place was small and it didn't look as if we could wheel in our kid vehicle. But, the nice young lady server insisted we bring it in and she found a spot for it that didn't get in the way of other patrons. She said she didn't think it was a good idea to leave it outside and she assured me that they bring in strollers all the time. So I thought that was pretty nice of her to make our visit pleasant. Right up to where the window was, they had a traditional Japanese seating area. Before going up the steps, you have to remove your footwear--just like going to a Japanese tea party! But, one will soon discover that it's actually an illusion! They use regular tables and they are just surrounded by an elevated "stage" (for lack of the right term). It's brilliantly dressed up to look like you were sitting by low tables. It was a brilliant idea because as I didn't mind sitting seiza, my husband would prefer not to. So, this was great for him because he could sit and stretch his legs underneath the table. The food was okay. I thought their entrees were a little pricey for the quality but hell, we live in a place where Asian food is MIA so I shouldn't complain. We just wanted to binge! I ordered their Grilled Duck Breast with maple ponzu sauce and fingerling potato. I thought it was okay but my husband pointed out that I finished the whole thing anyway! The fingerling potato was like grated potato fries. My husband ordered their sesame crusted salmon but we both agreed that it was pretty dry. We got a lunch bento box for our daughter. It had a lot in it but of course, she focused only on the rice. There was nothing special about it. All in all, we had a pretty pleasant time here. On a good day Osaka is worth 4 stars, but I had to balance out the average. The fish is good, but inconsistent. I've had the King Salmon sashimi about 5 times and it has ranged from exemplary to my doubting that it even _was_ King Salmon. Same with the Otoro. I can deal with a bit of fluctuation in fish quality, but the staff is a bunch of knuckleheads. The first time I went I got lucky and scored a nice waitress. Since then the service has ranged from despondent to rude. I could accept this at a top rate sushi place, but at a neighborhood joint? There is simply no excuse. I usually don't care if a place has a shitty staff, but this is silliness. I would still recommend giving it a try, because the fish can be outstanding on a good day. Just be aware that you should only go if you know what you want, because the staff is not going to help welcome you into the world of raw fish. read more

Pretty good sushi at decent prices. The maki rolls are way big and the miso soup portion is average but has generous helpings of tofu and seaweed. The fish tastes very fresh and they give you low-sodium soy sauce, which is almost an extra star in itself. Osaka is a good, reasonably inexpensive place to satisfy your raw fish cravings. I can't speak about the ambience of the restaurant because we always get take-out, but I don't really care about ambience as long as it's not horribly obnoxious, so who cares. read more
