Friend took me here for dinner. Awesome, affordable sushi. It's tough finding a good sushi place (that's affordable) in NYC but J Pan is just that. Although the service was a bit too slow- no, I'm not being a picky New Yorker. Trust me; my friend and I chatted about EVERYTHING and the food still wasn't there. However, our waitress was very polite. I had a classic roll: Salmon and Avocado & one of their House Specials: "Sweetie Roll" My friend had the same classic roll and the special "Monkey Roll". This is the sushi restaurant I've been searching for. I ordered the weekend $9 lunch bento box that came with salmon teriyaki, miso soup, salad (with some sort of ginger dressing), shumai, perfectly sautéed vegetables, and 8 pieces of California roll. You can't find a better deal for the delicious meal you'll find here. Everything was perfectly cooked and fresh. Presentation was also appetizing. I've also been here a few other times for sushi and was very impressed by the unique menu selection. The restaurant is nice inside and there is a cozy outdoor seating area too. this restaurant has served me rotten or spoiled sushi on multiple occasions. the first time, I received a spicy tuna roll that tasted old and sour. I immediately spit it out and accepted this as a one time issue, as my previous experiences had been positive. unfortunately, after ordering last night I ended up with food poisoning that left me graphically sick for most of the night. the only food that I had that was different than my partner all day (who was not sick) was the spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll. as I had a previous bad experience, I came to the conclusion the spicy tuna was once again spoiled. no longer interested in playing Russian roulette with my sushi and health, particularly for steep prices! The great part of living in park slope brooklyn is that there are tons of great restaurants. That includes our Japanese restaurants. I'm not saying they are the best ever or best in town. But they are consistent. Never had bad fish but each restaurant has its own grade of quality. Jpan is I no exception. What I really like was the had a $30 3 course meal. I found that different from the other places and there was good selections to choose from. I think one of the gems in the sections was the spicy muscle miso soup. The spicy tuna tartare was good but a bit dry and the sashimi plate was the usual array of fish but was displayed very handsomely. Unfortunately, the sushi was inedible. It tasted off on first few bites, but I thought it may have been me. On further inspection, I found slime on the bottom of the yellowtail scallion roll and proceeded to choke on a shell in the spicy kani shrimp roll. I personally don't eat seafood BUT, my boyfriend and friends love seafood so we actually come here a lot. I usually get the avocado rolls which I love. Plus they're only $3.50 My boyfriend loves every special roll But especially the crazy roll, Winter roll and the volcano roll. Try the plum wine. It's delicious!!!! Jenny is the best waitress! Usually when I find out a Japanese place is run by Chinese people, I imagine the food to be only decent or terrible( I could say this without feeling bad because I'm Chinese). That was the case when we went to this place and suddenly heard everyone that works there starting to have a conversation in Mandarin Chinese with each other. Once I heard that, I so wanted to make a run for the door but the only thing I could do was have the thoughts of "Oh damn I am trapped" go through my mind repeatedly because by then they had already seated us. Sighing. I looked at the menu and after a brief moment of prayer and totally putting my faith behind Yelpers that gave this place an average review of 4 stars, I ordered the $25 3-Course Special that they had going on for a limited time ( I think it was an extension of their Dine In Brooklyn Menu that was over for about two weeks). For my order I chose: Spicy King Crab. This was a slightly fried, crunchy, big chunks of king crab meat wrapped around layers of avocado on top of a salad mix and a piece of grilled asparagus. This was all drizzled with a delicious sweet, and slightly sour dressing. This plate was a good appetizer and I started to realize I might be wrong about pre-judging this place. The only problem I had with the salad was that it was called Spicy King Crab, and there was no hint of spiciness at all. Nada. Not even a bit, although I could see pieces of the peppers on the sauce. Must be the mildest hot peppers in the world. But hell, it was so good I didn't care. Rock Shrimp (Fried Shrimp in Mayo Sauce). This dish was made for the special and was not found on the regular menu ( I asked the waiter and he confirmed this). These shrimps were puny but what they lacked in size, they made up for it in quantity. It was good but this tasted so similar to the Fried Shrimps in Mayo in Chinese restaurants that it was the least Japanese of all the dishes I tried here all night. On the side of this appetizer, it also came with a small salad simply flavored with lemon juice. Refreshing but nothing too special. Salmon Teriyaki. One of my habits when it comes to new Japanese restaurants is to try out their Salmon Teriyaki. I like mine not too dry, yet with flaky meat. Preferably the skin should be crispy with a slight crunch to them. The one from this place have most of it right. There was no skin but it was good with a nice thick teriyaki sauce that wasn't too sweet. The two (Yes i said two) giant slices of salmon came on top of two pieces of steamed broccoli and unexpectedly, a small pile of Chinese baby bok choy that also went well with the sauce. It's not a spectacular dish but overall I liked it. In the end, even though it wasn't authentic Japanese food as I was expecting when I first walked in, the Chinese influenced Japanese food actually tasted pretty good and I wouldn't hesitate to go back again. The staff was very friendly, and even though we were there till almost closing time, they weren't rushing us. When we expressed interest in seeing the back garden area where people could be seated on warmer days (we were there on a chillier day so it wasn't available), the waiter actually took the time to walk us to the back, turned on the lights and let us browse the area a bit despite the fact that they were busy preparing to close. *************************************** I have to mention one other dish even though it wasn't mine. My friend chose something called Tuna Dumpling for her appetizer selection and it blew both our taste buds. And it was so pretty to look at to boot. We were expecting little dumpling like pieces (the waiter laughed and told us that was what almost everyone imagine it to be when ordering) but instead it was a giant dumpling shaped piece made up of spicy crab stick wrapped with raw tuna sitting on a bath of red wine sauce and soy ginger. Mix the sauce and mix spoonfuls of the food into it and wow. Get this if you can although it's a little pricey at 11 bucks a plate. read more

Had a great experience late night dining here. We got there past 10pm on weeknight. Seated quickly. The plum wine was wonderful, served in big full glasses. I kept it simple and ordered the eel avocado roll (set of 8) while my husband had the chicken katsu. Both dishes came pretty quick. Both delicious. I've tried a variation of the special rolls: fantastic, monkey, ocean, winter - ranked from The Best to ...4th Best, because they're all so good. The fantastic rolls stands out because of the crunchy fried onions sprinkled on top and within the rice. The Monkey roll sauce is delicious!! After strolling around the Park Slope area my friend asked me to choose a place to eat. So we passed by this place and they have a menu outside for $25 three-course menu and it drew me in. The place wasn't crowded, possibly because it was on a late Sunday evening. The ambiance of this place is really cute and they have outdoor seating in the back with really nice lights. No matter the inside or the back of the restaurant, I find it a really cute place to take a date. They also have a cute bathroom. The waitstaff are really friendly as well. For appetizer, I had the tuna dumpling, which has a really pretty plating presentation and it was pretty good I must say...mMm raw tuna! When the waiter brought this dish to me I was confused, I was trying to think what did I order again? I imagined a few tiny dumplings, but nope it wasn't it's one big dumpling- that's why it's tuna dumpling (singular). My friend had the rock shrimp that was not on the regular menu, but it was for the three-course. This dish reminded us of the walnut with shrimp dish at Chinese restaurants. For entree I had the sushi platter, which has 14 pieces of sushi. The sushi was pretty fresh. And he had the salmon teriyaki, which was pretty tasty as well. Generally, I'm pretty lenient because I come from the hospitality industry. I totally get it. There are 9 pieces of sashimi & some phenomenal thing that's spicy tuna wrapped in avocado. The fish is fresh. It's not like top of the line but it's still very good. Came here for their Tuna Dumpling that was talked about from nearly everyone that went here. The place was dark, not bad for a nice chit and chat and some good sushi. They have a backyard patio which is lit with lights. The waiters and waitresses were friendly, service was good. Our glasses of water was never ever empty. Tuna Dumpling - I loved this dish! The dish was huge, in the middle was tuna wrapped around a kani salad ball. The kani salad had some tempura flakes for a crunchy texture. The two sauces on the plate which the dumpling swam in tasted delicious together also. Rainbow Fish Platter - This dish was good also. Thinly sliced sashimi on a bed of greens. The spicy sesame dressing (which isn't spicy at all) is what pulls everything together. Sushi Classic - Pieces of sushi and a spicy tuna roll. The pieces of fish are big and really good and fresh. I can pass on the spicy tuna roll because it was way too soft and mushy. Butter Flounder Fillet - The flounder was indeed good. Very moist and soft and the sauce over it was just perfect. I would actually stick with rice next time than order the house noodles because the noodles weren't cooked correctly (a bit undercooked), and lacked flavor. I just ate two orders of their vegetable fried rice yesterday. There's something about it that I just I love - it's really lightly flavored and very delicate. The inari roll is awesome, the tofu seems to be soaked in a sweet dressing that I really enjoy. The sweet potato tempura roll is great too. The AAC and avocado rolls are just standard, avocado is cut too big. Can't speak to the seafood rolls. The sushi rice is pretty plain, not seasoned, but the fillings in the specialty rolls are interesting enough. For the reviewers who can't seem to understand how to order at the door of a restaurant, at JPAN you literally ring the bell that has a big sign taped above it. Someone comes over to the barrier, unblocks the opening, and you order. It's really not that hard. There is hand sanitizer available, the menus were all clean. Came here last night after attending The Bell House for a live NPR show. It was a little after 10:00pm and I was surprised to see they were still open, since a lot of the restaurants in the area close early. My boyfriend and I were immediately greeted by our waitress. I ordered the monkey and lovely roll, which were amazing!!!! So fresh and rich in flavor! We ended up chatting with one of the waiters who was awesome and he was cracking jokes left and right.
