Aside from the uncomfortable seat they put us in (near the door, smushed against the curtains), specifically beside these four yuppie idiots ("Is it HARD to make YU-don?")... ...the sushi was actually really good. We ordered a tuna and salmon sushi dinner - the fish was extraordinarily fresh. We also had one of their special Phoenix rolls ($10, but well worth it), tuna and eel and mango sushi topped with crab stick and cranberries. I also REALLY like the fact that they don't automatically embed the wasabi in the middle of the nigiri, since I don't like wasabi much. Service was excellent - my water glass was never empty. I had heard great things about Jpan and finally ordered delivery from them last night. I was thrilled with everything about them-their friendliness on the phone, super quick delivery, and delicious food. The mushroom soup was yummy (even more mushrooms would have been great), as was the seaweed salad. My husband and I shared the vegetarian sushi platter and the vegetable yaki udon. The yaki udon had an amazing amount of veggies, which were really flavorful and fresh. Our sushi platter had an avocado spinach cucumber roll, along with assorted veggie sashimi. I thought it was an excellent variety and I especially loved the sashimi with the pickled veggies. I will most definitely be ordering from Jpan again. So yum! read more

Not bad at all. I liked almost everything. They only concern is "B" health rating. When I see it I always check what are actual violations for this restaurant listed on NYC Dept of Health site. Sometimes they are non-essential like "Plumbing not properly installed" or "Non-food contact surface improperly constructed". But in case of Jpan it says (besides other things) "Live roaches present in facility's food and/or non-food areas." I will not go back for sure until they will have rating "A". read more

Came here far a quick bite with friends before a movie. This place has a friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Ended up staying longer than expected because the food was pretty good. Better than most sushi places as far as freshness/flavor. Tried the tuna dumpling, it was different but good. The Kani salad is always a good pick. Inviting, intimate place. Was greeted immediately at the door by a server. Simple décor. No sushi bar seating. Had the following: Eel/Avocado roll, Spicy Salmon and Rainbow rolls. I liked all but was hoping for more flavor out of the Rainbow. My water was filled promptly throughout. Bathroom was very clean. Wasn't busy when I was here (Thurs night at 7PM), but there were quite a few regulars in and out while I was there. Their delivery driver was in an out the whole time I was there, so the local following is strong just based on that alone. So far, this is the best sushi I have had in the Park Slope/Prospect Park area. Will definitely go back to try some of the Special Rolls and follow up here. One note: The Special Roll menu lists a "SUPRISE Roll". I think they need a Spellcheck Roll right under it. read more

The sushi was pretty fresh. I had the evergreen roll which was very tasty and was big (it better be at 14 bucks), sashimi clam, squid and octopus and sushi salmon roe and sea urchin. The prices for the a la carte items were a little high, but the pieces of fish were pretty large. I found the cooked food was just so-so, but it could have been what we ordered. I had high expectations of this place...and was a tad bit disappointed because our entrees took forever to come. We ordered the double tuna...which supposedly had seared tuna on it. The tuna on top of the roll tasted raw...so my poor friend couldn't eat any of it. So home it went with me. The fresh salad with the ginger sauce was perfect. Very delish. Stopped in over the weekend for a late lunch. Decided to go with the luch special menu. I had the 2 roll special. Eel cucumber and spicy salmon served with miso soup and salad. For 2 simple rolls, the plating (presentation) was nicely done. SImply good--got my sushi fix. My friend had the beef udon. It was a thumbs up! The soup was perfect--not too salty, not too bland. Paired up nicely with the udon, beef slices and mixed veggies. His order also came with a side salad. The decor of this place is pretty cool. My husband and I have been coming to J'pan almost every Saturday night for the past six months and I have to say the food is very good for the price. The sushi is always fresh and we've never gotten a bad meal. My husband prefers the specialty rolls, Jpan Roll in particular, but I've recently been ordering the simple sushi or sashimi pieces (sometimes the specialty rolls are too much (stuff) for me!) Everything is always good and tasty. Tonight we also had the Rock Shrimp and Kimchee White Tuna appetizers and they were both delicious. Not only that but the hostess is the best! She not only knows what we like to drink (large hot sake...usually) but also gave us a free bottle of sake as a gift/something extra for being a loyal customer! Happy New Year J'Pan! Jpan was a great dinner experience! Hurray for the attentive waitress. She refilled my hot green tea regularly. Hurray for the roomy seating. We sat in the back garden area and weren't disturbed by the conversation at neighboring tables. DOUBLE hurray for the Fire Island Roll. It is a *genius* house special of shrimp tempura & avocado, wrapped in sticky rice and topped with spicy tuna. The fish overall is merely acceptable/okay, but I was impressed by how affordable our meal was. The preparation was high quality and they have a wide selection of items, including more hot/cooked items for the anti-raw or pro-Teriyaki, Tempura, and Udon crowd. Fair warning: while the restroom is clean and accessible, it is also a one-person and dimly lit unisex situation. I wouldn't give Jpan five stars, like my beloved Ten, but my bf said they make the best Beef Negimaki he's ever had. read more

Let's just say this is one of the best additions to 5th Avenue in a long while. It was opened by a Yamato workerbee, and deserves neighborhood notoriety. And if Saturday night's crowd was any proof, the Slope is finally getting it. If you're a discriminating fan of sushi and love Taro on Dean Street but don't want to walk that far for fear of not getting a table, try JPan for its creative appetizers and perhaps the freshest product anywhere along our local strip. JPan does things most restaurants don't, such as feature their truly best and freshest offerings in the daily specials menu. (I've worked in sushi and other Asian restaurants before, and like most food establishments, they'll try to sell off their oldest product - in lieu of throwing it away - by highlighting it for customers who don't know any better.) Standouts include a yuzu drizzle, with an essence literally brought in from Japan. The concentrated citron fruit is whisked with a toasted sesame oil, turning into something so delightful that you can't help but lick your plate one finger at a time when all the fish is gone (ask which sashimi they're serving it with that day). The sweet kimchi mounded with a generous portion of perfectly seared white tuna sashimi and tobiko garnish couldn't be recreated either, although I would dare them to try. Tell management that you're in the mood for something unforgettable, and watch him bring you an app that will blow your mind and set your date up for a night s/he won't forget...at the cost of a lousy Starbucks venti frozen mocha latte. Seriously. Allow good sushi, as it should, be the temporary cure for your tired relationship, or the foreplay your first date needs if your nervous conversation is getting you nowhere, fast. I say this as a longtime fan of Kiku (the original South Slope takeout location and North Slope restaurant), occasional patron of overpriced Blue Ribbon Sushi (even the service is really too pretentious for the area, but they have the best saki menu east of Manhattan), and one who is loathe to step foot into impostor Nana just a few blocks north. And this opinion takes into account the sushi restaurants above 2nd Street along 5th Avenue - nothing seems to come close in comparison. read more

Typically I am a big fan of Jpan. Fish is usually fresh and I enjoy the rolls. The other day was different story. I ordered a roll and asked for raw tuna instead of tempura salmon. I got home and I had tempura tuna. Yikes. Called Jpan and let them know that my order was wrong and they offered to fix a new roll. Ok fine; however they decided to serve last weeks tuna which was gray in color and difficult to chew through. Such a disappointment when I come here all the time and never have any issues. Jpan's got beautiful, japanese inspired (go figure!) decor and bright window seats that often draw me in. The staff is very polite and attentive and its a pleasure to sit and eat inside the restaurant. The sushi isn't terribly expensive, particularly if you go for their lunch specials, but I find it lacks a certain flair. The rolls are fairly standard. I'm neither blown away by the simplicity of amazingly done sashimi nor wow-ed by fancy, stuffed to the gills maki creations. Just decent, standard sushi. Most of the rolls I've ordered there could really benefit from the use of some sauce, so I'd suggest asking for spicy mayo or eel sauce etc (I'm sure they charge you for it, but can't recall) if you're ordering a roll that you'd typically expect to be sauced. Even commonly sauced rolls, like sweet potato tempura, are served dry here. read more

My favorite sushi lunch special place!! The quality at those prices are an absolute steal. Definitely get the chirashi, which has about 9 pieces of assorted fish. The rice is nicely seasoned and is even topped with shredded imitation crab meat and egg! A very nice touch and looks great too! Yum!! Another plus is that I've eaten here a bunch of times before, and I think the quality has actually improved! We wound up here one night after Hubby refused to return to our go-to, the sit-down Kiku on 7th Avenue, declaring both their sushi and ambience, "too cold." We haven't looked back; in fact, the sweet couple who seemingly owns the place, has remembered us since that very first visit. And yes, the ambience is cozier, and the room temperature fish, more appealing to Hubby. Anyway, I am the first to admit I am no sushi connoisseur so if you are, you should probably stop reading. But if you're looking for a casual spot to get a simple, fresh sushi fix, this place will do just fine: As others have mentioned, the Monkey Roll is awesome, so we always get one of those and then try another roll or two. We often also get Sashimi and recently tried the Tempura, which included 2 nice, plump shrimp (shrimps?). Definitely recommend. I sometimes wish they'd expand on their Roll selection. Even with the specials, there is often not enough that jumps out at me. But overall, am happy to call this my regular spot. read more

Great lunch specials. Whenever I am in the mood for a close Japanese cuisine, I would come here. There bento boxs are very fulfilling. They add all the right vegetables in the meat. The sauce with the chicken or fish is excellent. I love their phoenix roll. The other roll I had, I forgot the name was okay, didn't have any crunch. However, the sushi roll overall is great. Also, I think adding fruits to sushi is a great idea. It makes it tastier and refreshing. For dinner it is great as well. Service is always good and prompt. Although the waiters can get a little excessive with the water pouring, sometimes service is a a bit too much. Lol, but I guess that's okay. However, the green tea refill is fine with me. If you're an avid follower, you'll note that I've eaten a TON of sushi recently. It's always been my fave but for whatever reason, it's been the go-to cuisine of everyone I know. Basically, this place is amazing. I didn't believe my non-foodie friend when she told us we HAD to order certain items but I may start relying on her wisdom since she made such amazing suggestions the other night ;) We started with the green salad which was fresh, not small and very refreshing. Then we shared the eggplant with spicy mayo and seafood on top. This was amazing. Just typing this is making my mouth water. I should have ordered one for myself and called it dinner. But we didn't. We ate a lot more. And were stuffed. We picked the Jpan roll which was pure fish without rice and very cool. The spider roll; Duet Roll - spicy tuna & salmon with avocado; yellowtail jalepeno (very spicy, beware);White Sand Roll - salmon crab stick & avocado topped with spicy crunchy white tuna & scallion; and another I cannot recall but which was equally amazing. The rolls were very big. Normally 2 rolls/person is insufficient but with the other stuff, it was too much. We even took some home for lunch the next day. The service was great and the place had a steady influx of patrons during the hours we sat, ate and enjoyed our meal! read more

I've been a great fan of their $8 sushi lunch special - which they go so far as to deliver!! Two rolls, soup and salad for $8 - amazing. Their special rolls are something I cannot find elsewhere - try the Surprise - spicy tuna with grilled banana, has wowed every person I've ever introduced to it. Also a huge fan of the Jpan roll - which is hard to explain - all types of fish, mango, wrapped in rice paper - no rice - with a yummy sauce! This one is big you will def want to share it. Same goes for my new fav the Lovely roll which is spicy tuna, covered with scallop, lobter salad and cavier. OMG OMG so good. Haven't eaten really anything but the sushi at Jpan, it is too good to pass up. Go there right away and leave the mediocre place you've been dining at behind. read more

The first bite we both took, we each knew something was wrong. The fish was so sour, and the roll itself so terrible that I ran back down to Jpan to ask the staff what happened. They gave us a different roll (which was still pretty funk) and did not apologize. Jpan used to be our go-to sushi place in Park Slope, but we're crossed it off our list for good. I come here for the lunch special. I like this place because the restaurant spacious and I never have to wait on the weekends during prime time, allowing me to sleep in. Basically, the bento box is $8.50 and you're guaranteed to be stuffed afterwards. I like the salmon teriyaki and the chicken skewers. I would avoid the beef teriyaki, as the beef is not the best quality. The only thing is I don't know why the chef put the rice far away from the entree in the bento box, making it an awkward experience for me to eat it. If you want rolls instead, I recommend the phoenix roll, which has cranberries on top and a yummy sauce. For dessert, they have great green tea tempura ice cream for $5. I also like their hot tea that they serve for free. Service here is good. Not overly attentive, but they are quick to get what I need. Overall, a great lunch deal without the wait. read more

I had an unfortunate experience with JPAN delivery tonight. We ordered Chicken Katsu (with rice), Chicken Udon, and Edamame. 90 minutes later we got cold food. The Katsu was mushy. They did not provide any rice or noodles with the Katsu. The Udon was luke warm. The Edamame was pretty good. Maybe their sushi is better and quicker, but this was the most disappointing meal I've had delivered in the neighborhood. Too many good options to try again. read more

Easily my favorite sushi restaurant in Park Slope. I order in from Jpan several times a month, and occasionally travel to the restaurant. Delivery is always prompt and the the sushi is always fresh. For $15, you can get the spicy roll dinner entree which gives you 3 rolls, and a soup/salad option. It's a lot of food, but completely worth it given the price. I haven't tried their cooked food, but when it comes to sushi, Jpan is always my first choice in Park Slope. If you ever go there, I'd suggest you check out the Lovely Roll or the Fire Island Roll. read more

I am surprised that Jpan has so many positive reviews. I went once for dinner 3 or 4 years ago and thought it was sub-par. My husband and I went for lunch today and were very under-whelmed. The sushi fish did not seem to be very high grade and the rolls were poorly put together i.e.falling apart. I have moved into my new apartment and since jpan is literally downstairs this could be very dangerous for me and my unborn babies which (you know the whole mercury/lead/fish issue I am NOT expecting-repeat I am not expecting mom if you are reading this calm down...) The decor is kind of nobu meets lotus. Eel/Avocado roll-excellent one of the best I have ever had Crunchy Salmon Roll-salmon good but not particularly spicy Fire Island Roll-good but the tuna on the outside was ever so slightly off. Good lunch deal and many other choices. The staff is attentive and kind. My only issue would be the music I like to dip my rolls in soy sauce in relative quite not to the thump of technoesque Asian music. After hearing about this place a couple of times, my friend and I decided to give it a try yesterday (sometime in June)...And of course I was not completely sober...I blame it on the World Cup!!! But anyway, we popped in there around 10 pm and I must say that the decor was pretty nice...a very sedate feeling. My friend got the 3 course for $25 meal and I should've done that as it looked really good...he got the king crab salad which looked like a bunch of mesculin greens with a glob of king crab and Japanese mayo enveloped in slices of avocado...in fact avocado must have been the theme for tonight because everything seemed to artfully covered or hidden in it! A second salmony avocado covered concoction with flakes and a bunch of sauces came out and he devoured that ending the his tour with the sashimi set. I, being inebriated and silly, decided to try some random rolls and went on the suggestion of the wattress and started out with some rice paper, mango, tuna, and salmon sashimi concoction. ..When it came out, I was thoroughly confused because it looked like someone threw up a bunch of American-inspired Japanese sushi sauces onto a plate and then threw some salmon and tuna sashimi slices around....I have no idea what to call this or what I ate but since it wasn't that cheap, I gulped it down....it wasn't awful per say but it wasn't the austere culinary beauty that one would typically find in sushi....even in most american-inspired sushi. J-Pan is pretty great. I wouldn't say it's of the same caliber as some other high priced sushi spots in New York, but it's definitely good for most occasions. I haven't had anything here that was especially exotic, but the freshness and quality of what you get is very good. The sushi boat, oh the sushi boat....it's gigantic...no, TITANIC. (ok, bad joke) You really get a lot of fish for your dollars with the sushi boat. However, I still find myself going a la carte to get more of the things that I really want...in addition to the boat.
