Yaki soba in the city has been one disappointment after another, but the one here was actually quite good, rich and flavorful. Veggie yasai gyoza was unique texturally from the whole peas inside but I enjoyed it. The miso soup was solid and always nice to get a soup for free alongside your meal. Somewhere in the middle. Japanese sushi places tend to not have pan Asian elements, and instead, focus on making their smaller menu higher quality. The inside of the restaurant is decorated nicely. It's kind of small, but nice looking. In the winter, the restaurant gets kind of cold -- drafts come in pretty strongly when people hold the door open. I recommend not sitting next to the front door. This has been my favorite sushi spot for quite some time but I've never written a review. Post covid they are takeout and delivery only. Pre covid they have a nice backyard. Again, this update is for delivery only. I used to really love this place, but it seems as though the quality of their sushi has really deteriorated. Our last three deliveries went from mediocre to bad to awful, and at this point we've decided it's time to revisit some other sushi spots in the area. My husband and I each got a roll combination lunch special, and the cuts of tuna were very chewy and sinewy. The avocado was overly ripe and mushy, and the rolls were prepared very sloppily and were falling apart. The rice also wasn't seasoned well. I've had much better sushi from delis in Manhattan. I'm not sure if it's under new ownership or if they have different sushi chefs on staff now, but it's definitely a disappointing change. I don't always want to leave my apartment, so when that happens and I crave sushi, I look to my fellow Yelpers. I'd tried different sushi delivery before (do you realize how lucky we are to have sushi delivery?!), but I eventually learned that Sumi Sushi is the right combination of fresh fish and kitchen options. I like the shrimp tempura appetizer. Two fried shrimp and a surprising load of vegetables too: zucchini, eggplant, sweet potato, carrot, taro root. Even when delivered, they're crisp and hot, very satisfying. For sushi rolls, I like the spicy crispy tuna and the tuna and avocado. They have a lot of vegetarian rolls, which is fine, but not as delicious and energizing as raw fish. I don't eat farmed salmon (you shouldn't either, more details in other reviews) so there aren't a lot of other options. There are lots of choices with artificial crab, which I also skip. No thanks. That said, the tuna rolls are solid. The miso is delicious, with enoki and tofu and wakame (seaweed). If you get the lunch menu, there's a combo with 2 or 3 rolls, miso, and a salad with carrot ginger dressing. Great deal. read more

I went here last Sunday because all of the other brunch spots were booked in that area if brooklyn. I'm so glad decided to go in! It was so intimate and chill. The fish here is awesome. Been here a few times, and I always order sashimi yellowtail, tuna, and salmon, both regular and belly, and the baritone roll. The quality of the fish is excellent. The fish melts in your mouth, and always tastes fresh. The Naruto roll is the best I've ever had. The cucumber is crisp and fresh, and the fish used is just as good as the sashimi. My favorite being the spicy crunchy scallop, the unagi also prepared properly, the tuna was the most disappointing unfortunately, but the other two rolls were so delicious I didn't care. I assume Sumi does a reasonable volume of delivery orders, because the food is fresh and the restaurant was pretty empty when I went on a weekend. Also probably doesn't help that it's a stone's throw away from three really good sushi places (Taro, GEIDO and Koto). So I took a Seamless gamble and placed an order for pickup. I got the sashimi lunch (8 pieces), the Kamikaze roll and the Angry Dragon roll. They spell it "Kamakaze" on their menu, but I'm going to spell it the right way. If they have a problem with that, they can Sumi. I will never apologize for puns. The Kamikaze roll was spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail and avocado. The Angry Dragon roll was shrimp tempura with crabmeat and avocado. Topped with spicy tuna, spicy mayo and eel sauce. Probably overkill, but it worked. The Angry Dragon roll was the better of the two, but I enjoyed both. The sashimi was fresh, reasonably thickly cut, and two of each type of fish. Pretty good sampling selection.
