Came here with my roommate for dinner since we were both craving sushi. I was pleasantly surprised by the prices which were some of the lowest I've seen around. We got the duck lettuce wraps which were decent (slightly overcooked meat) and then we each got two deluxe rolls. Always stop at Yamato after visiting the Kith store in Brooklyn. The shrimp wonton soup is really the reason why I go but I prefer the large size with the noodles. The place is pretty small but always busy and the staff is very friendly. The rock shrimp is a must, the perfect amount of spice. The rolls are typically super fresh but it didn't feel that way this time around (must have been an off day). Definitely stop here and get the large size shrimp wonton soup! read more

My husband and I came here twice so far. And both times have been really good. The first time we went, it was right before 4pm, like 2 minutes away and the waitress was nice enough to let us order off the lunch menu. My husband got the teriyaki chicken and I believe I got a shashimi dish. The second time around, I got udon and he got ramen. I really like their udon noodles - they're soft and they're also thick, which is what I expect from udon. Plus the soup wasn't too salty and they give you a generous portion so it's filling. Tried Yamato and it was a super easy, casual, sushi spot! Food was decent and prices were very good. I tried one of their salmon rolls and it was tasty. Service was very quick and judging from the takeout bags I could see it looks like Yamato is a popular takeout spot in Park Slope. Indoor seating is good though. The restaurant is a bit narrow so party sizes of 4-6 are probably the largest that can comfortably fit. A great quick sushi option in a very cute neighborhood though! read more

Food is okie but not the top quality. We ordered spicy tuna combo and spider roll which are really so so. Spider roll is barely the side of a regular sized roll. I enjoy the eel hand roll thou. I haven't had good experiences from this restaurant. I've tried it on and off over the years. Either the sushi smells fishy, there's too much rice, or I've felt sick after eating the food. The noodle soup was an overload of regular spaghetti noodles with minimal broth. Appetizers are greasy. For over five years the restaurant's grade read "pending" outside of the window. I always found it weird the grade was pending for so long. Recently I saw they finally received a grade of 'B' and hid the sign so you can't see it. The restaurant never smells clean when you're inside. Enough said about this place. read more

Honestly this place is really cute yet elegant. Came in with a group of 5 and were seated at the roughly big round table. We were all really hungry so naturally we ordered a lot. We shared the jalapeño calamari (10/10) highly recommend we killed it as soon as we got it. We also got a few rolls to share as well; eel avocado roll, crazy roll, and solstice roll (all 10/10). We really enjoyed them! As for the entree, It was okay. Compared to the appetizers and shareable, the entree was mediocre. I got the Kalbi (5/10) I was not a fan of this only because the kalbi was really hard, almost impossible to bite into. Two of my friends got the crazy duck (8/10) and Tarragon Salmon (8/10). The meat and the vegetables were good. Only thing I would highly recommend is to not put too much sauce in it. The duck was covered and the salmon would've be really good if the sauce wasn't on the salmon making the crispy salmon, soggy. Sometimes you just need some sushi. If you're lucky, it's fresh, tasty, and served as pleasantly and efficiently as they do it at Yamato. Whether you want the fish and nothing but the fish (sashimi), the nigiri, or some sort of bastardized American adaptation roll with fried things, mayo, and barely any discernible Japanese influence that you can't help but love because it tastes good goddamnit, Yamato has it. If you want the latter two at lunch, you can even rock a sushi/chef's roll combo, which comes with a spicy tuna/shrimp tempura roll wrapped in rice paper because seaweed is too much for some people. It's as American as it gets, and I like it (although, I'd actually rather have the seaweed). Coming in at only $11 plus tax and tip (including an excellent accompanying soup and salad), it's an affordable balanced, delicious meal that I plan to have again. I wouldn't call this the best sushi I've ever had, but my meal here was without flaws. It's a good value from good people in a good space. The sushi here is excellent. The best part is the specialty and seasonal rolls. It's super creative and delicious. My favorite dishes here are the spider roll, spicy tuna, futo maki, and the salt and pepper shrimp and Singapore noodles. We usually order delivery, but it's so close to our house, sometimes we just drop by and pick up the food. The service is friendly and super nice. They are a great small business in the neighborhood. The service is great the food is nothning to cheer about.The decor is different than the line up of restaurants on 7th Ave. I odered the duck with Jasmine rice and the calamari for a appeitizer. My girlfiend ordered the sushi platter and soup for an appetizer. My duck was extremely salty and the calamari laid over a bed of mesculine lettuce with jalapeno peppers. I was not empressed with my girlfiends sushi than my own food. That is first for me. Btw if you need to go to the rest room you have to walk through the serving station. Also the price is right, its not overly priced and you get a good amount. I would definitely come back when ever craving sushi/sashimi. Excellent service. I came here for dinner with a friend for the first time. They have been here for 15 years. Prices are reasonable. We ordered a pot of tea--divine. I ordered the salmon avocado roll. A classic staple but a beautiful presentation. A perfect place to go with friends, family, or a date. A young girl next to us had her birthday here with her parents. The staff did a wonderful job singing her Happy Birthday. Will most definitely be back! read more

"Make sure you ask to sit on the patio." Those were the prophetic words of the helpful Park Slope woman who, when we pulled over, rolled the window down, and asked if she knew of a good sushi place, she instantly replied that Yamato was our destination, bar none. With such conviction, we knew we had a hit on our hands. As we walked in at 5:30 for an early dinner, the place was empty, but the front windows were thrown open to the street. The staff was unbelievably helpful as we were escorted to the patio, and seated in a surprisingly wonderful enclave. An enormous fountain/wall covered over the nearby generator, and Zen like gravel floors supported a perimeter of bamboo and stone benches, along with ample tables. I see why this patio is kept a secret! The food was exquisite. The Mustard Miso Tuna was perfectly seared, with a sweet hot mustard and asparagus spears. And the Avocado Tobiko salad was a wonder to behold and consume: the Ginger sauce was a perfect compliment. It was all about the Maki after that: we tried several, and not a single one was anything less than spectacular. Fatty tuna was exceptional, as were the spicy scallops in the Millennium Roll. Don't miss the American Dream roll: tuna, salmon, eel, and avocado, topped with what looked to be a tobiko-infused sauce/rice layer that was a delight. Service was great: they were helpful, friendly, and fast. Prices are absolutely reasonable for the quality of food. And the genmai cha tea without asking was a nice touch. As we left, only one other couple was on the patio, but the inside was full. Clearly, they keep the patio to a secret. :-) Gotta say, this was a nice surprise for a seasoned sushi lover from San Francisco in town for a dinner. If you're local, take advantage! read more

I'm happy that I have Yamato as my Japanese staple in Brooklyn. I vastly prefer it to the other Japanese restaurants along 5th Avenue. I've been coming since they opened a few years back, during my first stint in Park Slope. The portion sizes and the quality are great - the lunch special boxes are a good value, too (mostly under $10). The decor is simple, and the waitstaff is helpful, and not overwhelming. Being in Brooklyn, they're relatively family-friendly, too. I've seen moms with strollers here for lunch in the afternoons, and, while evenings are generally more grown-up, I've seen kids around. Kids love noodles, you know? At least, the asian ones do. Final word? Manhattan quality with Brooklyn charm and price. Nice. read more

We were looking for some good sushi around the area and decided to eat here. The decor of the restaurant is really cute and our server was the best. We started with spring rolls and pork buns and let me just say that you cannot leave this restaurant without ordering those spring rolls. It had to be one of the most delicious rolls I've ever had in my life - I would go there just to eat them. The pork buns were good but nothing to rave about. The sushi in itself was good and the fish was fresh. One of the highlights of our meal was dessert. We couldn't choose between green tea or vanilla tempura ice cream and our wonderful server decided to send us both. We devoured it all and walked away with happy bellies. Yep, "as good as it gets" is right!! Was lucky enough to go here last Tuesday with Mr Alex H. and - oh it had been too long! Perhaps even a year? Gasp! I love you Yamato!! I again had my lovely Valentine Roll with jalapeno added, and this time tried their new (I believe) Solstice roll - I mean can you go wrong with spicy salmon, fresh salmon, topped with jalapeno & tobiko? Yum!! So good! Every bite is like a rich, decadent gift for your mouth! And you deserve it :) My date had the Norwegentawn Roll (salmon tempura and cucumber roll, topped with fresh salmon, avocado, roe and spicy sauce) - which was Delicious! After reading the rave reviews about Yamato, I decided to check it out for myself. My dad was here from out of the country and had never tried sushi before so I thought this would be a good place to go. We arrived close to nine and there were a few diners. The service is fantastic. Everyone is really friendly and were even kind enough to take a group pic for us. It was blurry, but it's the gesture and willingness to do so that is more important. The food was very delicious, fresh, and reasonably priced. We had several rolls, edamame, wonton soup and omelet fried rice. The only thing that needed a bit of some kick and flavor was the corn and crab soup, but otherwise, things were great. The ambiance is really serene and beautiful and they have several wicked looking light fixtures that add to the sleek feel of the restaurant. The one drawback is that you have to walk past the kitchen to get to the bathroom and it feels a bit awkward. Perhaps this is why they have a B rating? I hope so, because I'd hate to think that it was something cringe worthy that would turn me off of such a nice little spot. read more

We went for lunch recently and I found this place to be overpriced and overrated. We ordered a fancy roll off the specials menu for $14. It was pretty much a glorified spicy tuna roll with some avocado. In fact, I've had much better spicy tuna rolls. We also ordered a lobster appetizer off the specials menu which sounded very interesting. It turned out to be very bland fried lobster pieces around a bed of iceberg lettuce. The one very good and appropriately priced item on the menu was the garlic duck lunch special. It wasn't garlicky, but the sauce was savory and delicious. Another issue I had with the place was missing soap in the bathroom. Not only is it inconvenient for the customer, but if there's no soap in the bathroom, what does that say about employees properly washing their hands? read more

What keeps me coming back again and again is their rock shrimp appetizer it is just the best rock shrimp tempura that I've ever had and different than any other one I've had as well. I went to Yamato to order lunch yesterday and was excited because I love Japanese cuisine and the lunch special was only $9. I ordered the crispy chicken over jasmine rice lunch special. The chicken was far from crispy, as it was soggy and way too laden with sauce. The salad was ok and so were the spring rolls, although when I opened the spring roll dip, it smelled like alcohol and tasted foul. The whole meal actually tasted very foul and I was left wondering whether or not I had eaten some spoiled food when I was done. I powered through the rest of my workday and then some workouts after work. I still wasn't feeling 100%. I went to bed after drinking a ton of water, ready for blissful, restful sleep. -HOWEVER- I was awoken at 4:45am with an urgency to go to the bathroom. Everything came pouring out. I would go on for the next 6 hours alternating between sitting on the toilet and then sleeping because all of my energy was wrecked. I have been sick all day today and I blame it squarely on Yamato in Park Slope. I will never go here again, and when I walk by it on the street, I will give it a really mean side eye. I will tell everyone I know to never go here. I'm not saying they used spoiled food as a way to keep their lunch specials so inexpensive, but I'm not saying they didn't either. Who knows? The only facts I have are that the food seemed a bit on the spoiled side, it felt gross eating it (but I was super hungry), immediately after my body didn't like it, and I woke up in the middle of the night sick af.
