Chicken Teriyaki Bento
Anne F.

My husband and I came here twice so far. And both times have been really good. The first time we went, it was right before 4pm, like 2 minutes away and the waitress was nice enough to let us order off the lunch menu. My husband got the teriyaki chicken and I believe I got a shashimi dish. The second time around, I got udon and he got ramen. I really like their udon noodles - they're soft and they're also thick, which is what I expect from udon. Plus the soup wasn't too salty and they give you a generous portion so it's filling. We will definitely be coming here again for our (well my) sushi needs.

Rock Shrimp Tempura

Always stop at Yamato after visiting the Kith store in Brooklyn. The shrimp wonton soup is really the reason why I go but I prefer the large size with the noodles. The place is pretty small but always busy and the staff is very friendly. The rock shrimp is a must, the perfect amount of spice. The rolls are typically super fresh but it didn't feel that way this time around (must have been an off day). Definitely stop here and get the large size shrimp wonton soup!

Tried Yamato and it was a super easy, casual, sushi spot! Food was decent and prices were very good. I tried one of their salmon rolls and it was tasty. Service was very quick and judging from the takeout bags I could see it looks like Yamato is a popular takeout spot in Park Slope. Indoor seating is good though. The restaurant is a bit narrow so party sizes of 4-6 are probably the largest that can comfortably fit. A great quick sushi option in a very cute neighborhood though!

Lunch special Yamato

Three and a half stars for delivery/takeout. The sashimi lunch special was high quality but not a lot of quantity. The fish was very fresh but arrived jumbled upon delivery. The salad had a few wilted lettuce leaves. I think Yamato would be a great place to dine in, but as other reviewers have already mentioned, not so great for takeout/ delivery. I tried the lunch from Yamato to see whether I should go there in person for lunch. I definitely would, the sashimi is very good.

Tarragon Salmon (7/10)

Honestly this place is really cute yet elegant. Came in with a group of 5 and were seated at the roughly big round table. We were all really hungry so naturally we ordered a lot. We shared the jalapeño calamari (10/10) highly recommend we killed it as soon as we got it. We also got a few rolls to share as well; eel avocado roll, crazy roll, and solstice roll (all 10/10). We really enjoyed them! As for the entree, It was okay. Compared to the appetizers and shareable, the entree was mediocre. I got the Kalbi (5/10) I was not a fan of this only because the kalbi was really hard, almost impossible to bite into. Two of my friends got the crazy duck (8/10) and Tarragon Salmon (8/10). The meat and the vegetables were good. Only thing I would highly recommend is to not put too much sauce in it. The duck was covered and the salmon would've be really good if the sauce wasn't on the salmon making the crispy salmon, soggy. The other two got the vegetable udon soup (10/10) and chicken katsu (8/10). They liked it! Ambiance: 9/10 Service: 10/10 Food: 8/10 Price: 8/10

Sometimes you just need some sushi. If you're lucky, it's fresh, tasty, and served as pleasantly and efficiently as they do it at Yamato. Whether you want the fish and nothing but the fish (sashimi), the nigiri, or some sort of bastardized American adaptation roll with fried things, mayo, and barely any discernible Japanese influence that you can't help but love because it tastes good goddamnit, Yamato has it. If you want the latter two at lunch, you can even rock a sushi/chef's roll combo, which comes with a spicy tuna/shrimp tempura roll wrapped in rice paper because seaweed is too much for some people. It's as American as it gets, and I like it (although, I'd actually rather have the seaweed). Coming in at only $11 plus tax and tip (including an excellent accompanying soup and salad), it's an affordable balanced, delicious meal that I plan to have again. I wouldn't call this the best sushi I've ever had, but my meal here was without flaws. It's a good value from good people in a good space. And one of their servers is named Peter, which is always a plus.

The food at Yamato is delicious. This place has very good quality sushi and plenty of options to choose from. I ordered the miso soup and sushi rolls and they came out very fresh. The server who attended to me was also very friendly and made me laugh. It's a great spot and have a meal with friends

Yamato is a okay restaurant. The service is great the food is nothning to cheer about. The decor is different than the line up of restaurants on 7th Ave. I odered the duck with Jasmine rice and the calamari for a appeitizer. My girlfiend ordered the sushi platter and soup for an appetizer. My duck was extremely salty and the calamari laid over a bed of mesculine lettuce with jalapeno peppers. I was not empressed with my girlfiends sushi than my own food. That is first for me. Btw if you need to go to the rest room you have to walk through the serving station. I didn't feel comfortable with that notion. Maybe I didn't order the right thing, who knows? I am not a fan so I will not be coming back.

Nice sushi restaurant for dinner. This was the first time having sushi is this area and this place for sure surprised us. Salmon sashimi was amazing!! And so was the Uni, super fresh. Also the price is right, its not overly priced and you get a good amount. I would definitely come back when ever craving sushi/sashimi. Keep in mind if ordering the Omakase you arent getting ALL different fishes/sashimis. You will get 5 different fishes, 3 piece each, 1 roll and a cut (cucumber cut) filled with uni. Still a good price. But not your typical omakase style.

Ok service, ok food. It's not bad, but not good ether. Outdoor garden would be nice, but it's right next to commercial ac which is loud and not particularly pleasant to look at. Got chirashi, fish was ehh. Rice was blah. Got the duo tartar appetizer - that was pretty good. Overall not coming here again.

A view of fountainside dining in the patio

"Make sure you ask to sit on the patio." Those were the prophetic words of the helpful Park Slope woman who, when we pulled over, rolled the window down, and asked if she knew of a good sushi place, she instantly replied that Yamato was our destination, bar none. With such conviction, we knew we had a hit on our hands. As we walked in at 5:30 for an early dinner, the place was empty, but the front windows were thrown open to the street. The staff was unbelievably helpful as we were escorted to the patio, and seated in a surprisingly wonderful enclave. An enormous fountain/wall covered over the nearby generator, and Zen like gravel floors supported a perimeter of bamboo and stone benches, along with ample tables. I see why this patio is kept a secret! The food was exquisite. The Mustard Miso Tuna was perfectly seared, with a sweet hot mustard and asparagus spears. And the Avocado Tobiko salad was a wonder to behold and consume: the Ginger sauce was a perfect compliment. It was all about the Maki after that: we tried several, and not a single one was anything less than spectacular. Fatty tuna was exceptional, as were the spicy scallops in the Millennium Roll. Don't miss the American Dream roll: tuna, salmon, eel, and avocado, topped with what looked to be a tobiko-infused sauce/rice layer that was a delight. Service was great: they were helpful, friendly, and fast. Prices are absolutely reasonable for the quality of food. And the genmai cha tea without asking was a nice touch. As we left, only one other couple was on the patio, but the inside was full. Clearly, they keep the patio to a secret. :-) Gotta say, this was a nice surprise for a seasoned sushi lover from San Francisco in town for a dinner. If you're local, take advantage!

The service was good, however the sushi was pretty bland. Good date spot, however lighting was too dark for my taste.

I'm so happy that this restaurant is just a 2 min walk from my apartment. The food here is amazing…read moreand the ambiance is nice and peaceful. Food and alcohol is fairly priced and food is flavorful/well seasoned which is hard to find in a Japanese restaurant. The service is quick and food didn't take a while to come out. We ordered shishito peppers, corn ribs, beef sukiyaki, pork belly wrapped enoki mushrooms, and Miyazaki a5 Wagyu hot stone grill. * Shishito peppers 5/5 My favorite out of everything we ordered. It's a MUST TRY! The sauce it's in has yuzu so it's nice, savory, a lil sweet, a lil sour, and a little citrusy - it's perfect for my tastebuds. Literally could not get over how good the sauce was. It also tasted good to dip the corn ribs in that sauce!! * Corn ribs 5/5 Grilled corn ribs with seasoning and cheese, super simple but super tasty. Can never go wrong with corn ribs! * Beef Sukiyaki 5/5 Nice and flavorful broth, the meat is tender, there's also a knot of clear noodles at the bottom of the bowl. * Pork Belly Wrapped enoki 5/5 GOOD. Who doesn't love pork belly AND mushrooms (only crazy people) ?! Amazing flavor, nice and smokey, with crunchy enoki mushrooms * Miyazaki A5 Wagyu 5/5 Good, nice to order once just to try since it is a little on the pricier side bc it's A5 Wagyu, personally I'd rather go to an A5 Wagyu restaurant if I want A5 Wagyu. Nonetheless, it was nice to try! This was enough food to share between my sister and I, without feeling overly full and bloated. Definitely will be coming back regularly since it's so close to home.

I'm going to give Tora some extra points because it's SO hard to find good asian food in this area…read moreof Brooklyn. Tora I think is a true jack of all trades, while many restaurants try to excel in one area I think Tora does amazing at multiple. It's good for sushi, ramen, noodles, etc. Just an overall really well-rounded japanese spot. I think their serving sizes are also very good. Though I'll say I don't think Tora particularly excels in one thing it's not going to be the best ramen or sushi you've had in your life but, for something that's close? Affordable? Has no line? It's definitely the best. Very above average in every regard. Haven't eaten here in person so can't speak on their service but at least their food? Great get pick-up/delivery all the time

While wandering through Bed-Stuy on a weekday evening, my husband and I decided to try out this new…read moresushi spot. It wasn't terrible--but I had a lot of mixed feelings. Food: 3/5 I'm a huge sushi fan, so I was excited when I saw a deluxe sashimi set on the menu. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark. The scallop was thinly sliced and lacked the rich texture I was hoping for. The salmon and other cuts were decent, but short and oddly shaped--chunky yet small, which made the whole presentation feel a bit off for something labeled deluxe. We also tried to branch out and ordered the short rib entree. For $21, it was shockingly small--definitely a single-person portion, not sharable. I added extra ikura to a salmon donburi bowl for $2, but it was barely a teaspoon's worth--just enough to say it was there. Oddly, the salmon slices in that bowl were thinner than the sashimi we had just eaten, and overall, it left me still hungry even after sharing a maki roll. Lastly, my husband ordered a green salad, which somehow took the entire meal service to arrive. When it finally came, it was just plain romaine, cucumbers, radish, and dressing. For a dinner that clocked in at over $150 (after tip), we definitely left underwhelmed. Service: 3/5 This part wasn't bad, just confusing. We were seated quickly, but the pacing of the meal was strange. Our seaweed salad and soups came out promptly, but the green salad came last, after the hot dishes and nearly after my husband finished eating. Also, a small thing--but when I'm paying $16 for four oysters, I want to know what kind they are. The menu just said "West Coast oysters," but our server couldn't tell us the variety or origin. Not a huge deal, but it added to a general lack of polish that didn't quite match the pricing. I don't think I'd return. For the price, there are better sushi options in Brooklyn with higher quality, better portions, and clearer service. Still, I appreciate new spots opening up in the neighborhood, and I'm always happy to try something new. Hopefully they refine the menu and service with time.

Izakaya Tenzo is a welcome addition to the BedStuy food scene. They'd been on my radar for a while…read moreand we stopped in on a Saturday evening when we wanted dinner but not anything too heavy. This fit the bill exactly. We started with the salmon belly carpaccio which I'd say isn't really a carpaccio because the salmon isn't sliced as thinly as you'd expect. But! I mention that just to set expectations. Nomenclature aside, it's an excellent appetizer. Served in a truffle and ponzu sauce, the salmon is lightly seared which yields two different textures to the fish. It practically melts in your mouth. Highly recommend this dish. For my entree I went with the trio don, which is 6 pieces of sashimi served over your choice of plain or sushi rice (sushi rice for me). The fish was fresh and flavorful. The portion was perfect for me. My boyfriend ordered a yellowtail roll and enjoyed that as well. We also shared a carafe of the cold house sake. I'd definitely come back and try more items on the menu. It's great for sharing and trying new dishes. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the prices were very reasonable.
