Really pretty decor, really average sushi. The fish was certainly fresh, though not remarkably so. I had the chirashi, which was just fine. The rice was not evenly vinegared, so some bites were a little bland. My wife's futomaki was fine as well, and her fried tofu was tasty. It was also a little odd to be asked if I wanted sweet and sour soup with my chirashi. The menu is really more pan Asian than Japanese. Yamato is my favorite neighborhood restaurant! My favorite part of this restaurant is their friendly staff. Peter and Vincent have been serving here ever since I came here, and always greet us with big smile. Super attentive and not too stuffy service! My favorites are Norwegen, White & Green river, and Blossom rolls. I've noticed that they're serving 3 course pre-fixe menu now. Yamato is one of the better Asian restaurants in the slope that has been around forever and is consistent with their really great food. I have been going to and ordering from Yamato for the better part of a decade and have never had a bad experience. And I like to think that Yamato has grown with me as my culinary tastes have evolved. Back in the day, when raw fish freaked me out, I would order the Chicken Terriyaki or the Udon. It comes with really good vegetables on the side and not too much sauce. Then, as I started branching out into sushi, I tried their basic California Rolls and Tuna Rolls--delicious. And now that I'm comfortable with raw fish in it's many forms, I've tried their more adventurous sushi and appetizers, and have never been disappointed. There's a lot of variety on their menu and they even have wagyu beef nigiri. I couldn't bring myself to pay $11 for one nigiri so I passed on that. We ended up ordering the miso black cod (comes with a load of green beans and a small bowl of rice), four different rolls, and the vegetable tempura. Everything was pretty good. The miso black cod was a bit too salty so you'll need the rice to balance it. The atmosphere here is pretty cool too and you can tell it's a neighborhood joint. There were a lot of families with kids that came that night. As for prices, it's a bit pricey. Considering the neighborhood you're in, I can understand why. Not necessarily a place I would come running back to eat, but not a bad choice if you're craving sushi and happen to be in the area. read more

A friend and I went to Yamato last night and we can't say enough about this restaurant -- everything was delicious, with a nice atmosphere and friendly staff. We shared: Rock Shrimp and Fried Oyster appetizers, which both came on a bed of lettuce with yummy toppings (a spicy mayo sauce for the shrimp and a jalapeno, bacon dressing for the oysters). A special sushi "Crazy Roll" with yellowtail and spicy tuna -- so fresh and light . Prefix Kitchen menu that came with 3 pork buns as an appetizer, filet mignon with green beans as the main dish, and a fried banana spring roll with chocolate and caramel and ice cream for dessert. The filet mignon was so tender and the fried banana was to die for! We also had Saki, and the whole meal was only $70 plus tip! The meal was so good that even though it took my friend 2 hours to get home on the G train (when it should have taken 20 minutes), he claimed not to be angry -- only because the food had been worth it! It's also nice that Yamato is Asian fusion so that when I go back with my husband, who doesn't love sushi, there is so much for him to choose from! read more

This restaurant has some very high quality tasting food. Don't be startled by some of the prices because it's absolutely worth it. The inner design is very modern and has a classy feel to it. I had the chicken Pad Thai, my sister and mom shared a California roll with salmon sashimi and a shrimp curry that comes with a coconut white rice. Let's start with the Pad Thai, it comes in a rather small plate but don't be filled to think they didn't give you a lot because that will fill you up, with the amount of noodles, chicken, vegetables and sauce stacked on top of each other is like a flavor mountain that leads to heaven. Everything was rich in taste and if you just add a little hot oil or hot sauce it will bring up the juicy flavors of this dish. The California roll had a very fresh taste to it and the roll was rather large compared to most you get at other places. Sashimi was also very fresh and tasted well with a bit of soy sauce and wasabi. So that gets a thumbs up. Now for dish I've been waiting to secretly sneak a taste of, the shrimp curry. Coming in tow separate plates, one for the curry itself with the veggies and other things mixed in and one plates of just the rice to sort of mix things together if you'd like. The rice had a bit of sweet taste and when mixed to the curry just creates a unique sweet and a bit spicy taste. The curry alone is extremely tasty and I like curry a lot so this certainly isn't some instant mix curry, you can tell it was made well and fresh. Overall if you want some really good tasty Japanese food is recommend this place highly. read more

Yamato was pretty fantastic. The waiters there are attentive but not pushy, and their attention to detail is pretty thorough. The food was of great quality and the presentation of each dish had a lot of care put into it. We ordered edemame and they brought out the biggest bowl of edemame I've ever seen. We were still eating it after we finished everything and were ready for dessert. In all, this place is very nice, if you want more than just a simple sushi restaurant you should check this place out for more of a japanese experience. read more

WOW! This place is great! The food is delicious. The restaurant has a large variety of dishes and if you come for lunch, you will leave a happy person with a full stomach. The restaurant isn't your typical Japanese restaurant; it is a fusion of Asian foods. Thus,on the lunch special, or the dinner special menu, you can really taste the fusion. One of the benefits of the place is the atmosphere; indoors and outdoors. In the garden there is a bamboo forest and a waterfall. Indoors there is great interior design. I had a great time here, the atmosphere is a bit quiet which is good for a first date kind of place. The food was fantastic... We had the sushi lunch special which came with soup & a salad. Most place just give you an option of either but I'm glad I got to try both. The miso soup was the best I've had in a while, very flavorful and well made. The salad was mediocre doesn't matter cause the sushi was soooo good, the salmon avocado was buttery, it just melts in your mouth mmmm... We also had the garlic broccoli which was light and tasty. I took my sushi-loving boyfriend here for a birthday dinner and he loved it! He loves miso soup and he said it was the best his ever had! He loves sushi, on the other hand I don't, but I still enjoyed the evening because of the variety of the menu. I also had their dessert which was great. I've went back there twice since and I must say they lived up to my first impression! The servers walked over to refill my glass every time it was half empty. This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants. I travel from Bensonhurst, where there are plenty of sushi restaurants, just to eat here. The food tastes very fresh and flavorful. Their prices are reasonable. So far, my favorites on the menu are: duo tartar, spicy miso toro, sushi deluxe and the lychee pistachio tart. The staff is extremely nice. Went for late dinner on a saturday night with friends, made reservations from opentable and we were seated right away. Service is great, nicely decorated, romantic ambiance. They had small appetizers that were complimentary from the bar - seaweed and a salmon roll I believe - pretty good. We ordered a bunch of rolls. The highlight was definitely the specialty rolls - the solstice and brooklyn rolls were our favorite. The regular tuna/salmon/yellowtail rolls were decent as well, pretty fresh. read more

This review is for a takeout order: Walking by doing errands in my new 'hood I saw Yamato a block from my apartment. On their sign they had a Bao, they call it something like a steamed pork bun, which I haven't had in a long time so was excited to have. I was disappointed they only had one kind, buy went with that and their crispy vegetarian spring rolls. The steamed buns are mostly steamed bun, which was disappointing, but the filling was pretty decent. The crispy spring rolls were pretty oily, and a little flavorless, but the greasiness could be because I didn't eat them right away. Yamato is a great neighborhood Japanese restaurant in Park Slope. The sushi is great and comes at very reasonable prices for the area. The sushi deluxe, which is generally how I judge a sushi restaurant, offers a solid selection of fish and a tuna roll for $19 -- includes soup or salad and no cheap throw-ins to fill out the plate like some other restaurants do. A similar entree at a local Japanese place in Cobble Hill, for example, cost $21 to $23, depending on the number of pieces. They also have a wide variety of both standard and creative rolls. The decor suggests a restaurant that is probably trendier than it is, but it is very comfortable, and there's a nice outdoor area in back during nice weather. The service has always been excellent, and they add in a small starter for free, which is a plate of three taster-sized appetizers. A very nice touch. I have been here a half dozen times, and it is a reliable, quality go-to for sushi. read more

I think I may have found my favorite sushi place in Brooklyn! Boyfriend and I were supposed to come here on Friday, but since lazy is our middles names, we didn't budge a bit. Luckily, we came yesterday around 5ish, right before the dinner rush and it was worth it! It's a bit of a walk from the G/F 7th Avenue train station but let me remind you, it will all be worth it after your meal. We got the Valentine Roll, Norwegian Roll, Crazy Roll, Rainbow Roll and I wish I remembered the 5th one. They were all so fresh and so tasty but our favs were the Valentine and the Norwegian. Usually, I don't expect sushi places to have stellar desserts cause let's face it, fried ice cream is fried ice cream. Good spicy tuna, good spicy yellowtail (crazy roll par excellence), generous edamame, vegetable gyoza tasty with excellent dipping sauce. Good portions, attentive service (6 water refills in 1 meal!), nice ambiance (but what's with the Christmas tree right behind the entry curtain?), amazing timing on the delivery of food... once course right after the other. Music is eclectic and quirky, varying from billboard hits of the 90's and 00's to twangy techno to bluegrass-y stuff - adds to the experience, for me. Good job, yamato. I just (10/17) called in my order because it was too cold to do the 3-minute walk. I have eaten at Yamato restaurant for both lunch and dinner I am allergic to ginger and soy. In lieu of the soup (full of soy) and salad (ginger dressing), I am always granted a $1 spicy mayo. Today, I called and a very anxious, Edward, denied my request and when I asked to speak with the manager he told me that there was none. When I explained I had been granted the request many times because it is a reasonable trade-off when considering the cost, he then spiraled into a monologue about me "wanting to get him fired" I explained that I "did not want him to be fired, that I wanted to get clarification" He claimed that he knew who I was (when really he was referencing another woman in my office) and that I was trying to "trick him" because I'd purchased it before. So, I decided to make that frigid 3-minute walk to ensure that the owners/managers were indeed not there and order my meal in person. Edward then became aggressive and yelled "I just work here and follow rules" Understandable Edward, but on every other occasion with reasonable humans engaged the exception has been made and never it acceptable to raise your voice on the phone and in-person to a once-loyal customer. read more

We ate here with a couple of HS friends I had not seen for at least thirty years. The place was blessedly quiet and good for chatting, easy to just linger and schmooze for a couple of hours. Those eating included younger couples and families as well as us old folks. I ate the walnut crusted brook trout main dish; the menu offered a choice of jasmine rice or brown rice but it came atop a bed of wild rice which was quite nice. An excellent dish. Others in our party has sushi which they reported was good, and certainly plentiful: portions were quite large for the price. I give only three stars instead of four because the one of us who had a dim sum box reported that the dim sum were greasy and just not that good. I found this restaurant to be quite tasty! Ate here around 5:30pm on a Saturday and walked into a completely vacant dining room. (Which was to be expected given the time) My party and I decided to eat outside on the patio, which is located at the very back of the restaurant. Like the inside, the outside is very nice...simplistic and calm. They have a little water fountain and the entire outside is lined with bamboo plants. I ordered the Spicy Roll Special (spicy tuna, spicy salmon & spicy yellowtail), Alaskan roll and the Park Slope roll (yum! Excellent smoky flavor) along with Miso Soup and Seaweed Salad. The Miso soup was excellent! More of a rich flavor instead of the watery miso broth I'm used to. They even give you a small complimentary appetizer to start off your meal! The decour is fairly contemporary that would probably look better in the evening than the day. The service was pretty efficient and the food came out pretty fast. The fish is fresh, beer is cold and close to where I live. So a definite hangout for quick sushi and a drink. A nice little spot in the area for sushi. Service was great and extremely friendly. There's a seating area outside in the back which is nice for a cool summer evening. They even have bamboo shoots along the wall to make it seem more isolated than it really is, which in actuality is an area between two buildings. The sushi was fresh and properly prepared. All of them were cut to fairly good portions. Not too big and had all the signs of fresh seafood. Service was attentive and consistently friendly. I was slightly disappointed with my meal at Yamato after reading some of the really good Yelp reviews. The atmosphere is nice (modern, dark, candles), and the mirror that runs along one of the walls helps the small space feel bigger than it actually is. But the food didn't wow us. The miso soup and vegetable gyoza were pretty bland and forgettable -- I wouldn't order either again. My husband ordered the chicken udon found it similarly bland. I had a shrimp tempura roll that was very good and the dancing roll (supposedly a 'chef's special' roll but seemed like your everyday spicy tuna roll to me). The prices are pretty comparable to other sushi restaurants in Brooklyn. I've tried several of the sushi places in Park Slope at this point and I haven't really found a favorite yet. I wouldn't rule out coming back to Yamato, but I think I'll try a few more places first. read more

The sushi has been fresh every time I have eaten there, and the fish serving was generous. The fish overlapped the rice, so they were not skimping and trying to save money by filling me up with rice. The service was quick and the food was fresh. Loved this place. Went for lunch a month ago or so. I'm Japanese and I am very discriminating when it comes to sushi. This place pleased. I ordered the Combination Roll, which includes two half rolls from among their special rolls. I also ordered the sea urchin nigiri and the squid nigiri. I liked my rolls fine -- I chose the Valentine Roll and the Crazy Roll -- but I loved the sea urchin nigiri! It was sweet and the texture was almost perfect.
