One of the best restaurants I've eaten at in a while! My co-worker and I both ordered off the $10 lunch special menu, and let me tell you, it is your money worth!!!!!!!!!! I got the tandoori chicken, and my co-worker got the lamb curry. We both enjoyed it SO much, it was so filling, and the flavor on the tandoori was amazing, sweet with a tiny hint of spice. This is the only Indian restaurant in ALL of the lower mainland with the right recipe for biryani. I wouldn't order this dish anywhere else. Divine! I drove by this place and decided to give it a try. When inside and the place looks interested. The waitress was friendly but there was nobody in the place but no big deal. Me and my friend decided to split an appy and a main course. First the appetizer Nylan Bhajia- They are thinly sliced potato mojos battered in chickpea. It has an interesting taste and comes with coconut chutney. We did not mind them but for $9 was not worth it. Should not be more than $5 Main course Masai Ribs-this was described as thick grilled beef ribs with special sauce. The waitress told us it came with 4-5 pieces. When it arrived I was shocked it was 4 small pieces of ribs mostly all bone. I admit the taste was interesting but not work $18. Should be more like $10 at the most. The food is interesting and good, the amount of foods is small and the price is outrageous. It is close to double the price of what is expected. I understand with all the good rating it was empty. Very few people can afford this place, I felt I overpaid and felt stupid I allowed myself to pay so much. I will not be back. Too bad with fair pricing I would come back. read more

For 13.95 a great combo plate for 1 includes: Garlic Naan, Lettuce/Carrot salad, raita, 1 slice of Kuku Choma chicken, 1 Lamb Kabob, 2 thick pieces of Masai beef ribs and Masala Fries. I am not a big lamb eater, but the kabob was deeee-licious. The ribs were juicy (yeah. read "fatty" but hey ...that's what makes beef so tasty and tender) and went perfect with the tamarind sauce provided. For dessert I had the Homemade Kulfi (which the menu said was "an Indian creamy textured ice cream topped with pistaccios and nuts") and chai tea. A small plastic cup was placed in front of me. It contained rock solid ice cream. I had to let it sit for a bit hoping it would become "creamy" ...but I have no patience when I want dessert. I dug in, scraping and scraping until I finished it. I think next time (YES there's going to be a NEXT time) I'll order one of the non-frozen desserts. BTW the place is clean and the service was friendly and efficient. I was there at the beginning of lunch and most of the other tables held groups of 8-10 people. Only the owner and one server but they made sure there was water and chai re-fills. This place is unreal. Tucked away in east van, this place is so good. Food is a mix of Indian and African. The menu is huge, and everything I've had on it is tasty. They even have pizza. There's an all you can eat curry night on Thursdays for $13. The only thing I don't like, is that their curries are quite oily, & if I eat too much on all you can eat night, it hurts my stomach. Jambo Grill serves up a combo of East African and Indian food. I am from Portland, Oregon, where Ethiopian restaurants are the norm, and other African food is rather limited. That said, I have no previous experience with East African Indian Cuisine, so I have no way of knowing if it is top notch or not. But, I do know that I enjoyed the food, that the staff were great at explaining everything, and it was exciting to try something totally new among friends. To get the whole experience, we all shared a bit of everything, but I especially loved the Pili Pili Masala Mogo, which are basically fries with a dipping sauce. Loved both the chicken and the lamb Biryani, and the garlic naan was also great. The only dish that our group was a bit disappointed with was the goat curry, since it seemed to be made mostly of bone and very little meat. But, to be fair the waitress tried to warn us that it was mostly a "marrow" dish and that we might not be used to it. Anyway, this is the perfect place to go and share amongst friends. Don't bother. The service was terrible even though there were only a few other customers in the place when we arrived. We had to remind the waitress that we hadn't received our appetizer when she served us our entrees. The entrees were OK. When the appetizer (Filafels) arrived a couple of minutes later they were overcooked - almost burnt. Overall what you get is not worth what you pay. The ladies room seemed clean but very much abused. When you make your way to the bathroom it's evident that the bathroom is shared with two other establishments not restaurant related and as a result may very well be why the bathroom is so beat up. Quality of food never fails. Had Channa Betata (chick pea soup that comes with samosa chips and dal bahjia), naan and mogo (cassava with chilli seasoning). The Iced Coffee was delicious and the service was terrific. We have gotten to know the owner who always stops by to check on us and share a joke. I've tried lots of different dishes the lollipop chicken and the boneless ribs are amazing. Same for the masala steak and potatoes. Lots of variety to choose from. Both vegetarian and meat friendly menu. Freshly made so you might have to wait a bit, but it's well worth it. Free underground parking at back of building. read more

We go here on Thursdays for the All You Can Eat Thali special, and it's fantastic. Unlike most Indian all-you-can-eats, this is a table-service situation, with the servers circulating with silver trays of curries, rice, breads, etc, and it's always fresh and delicious. We're big fans of Indian food, and Jambo has impressed us for sure. Love the sweet Lassi, and the saffron pudding dessert is just mind-blowing. the only dish I haven't really liked is one of the appys that hits your plate first- it's a cold, dried yucca dish, kind of like french fries. But otherwise, great food and an excellent deal. You won't leave hungry that's for sure. The owner, Nash, is a character too and the staff is nice. read more

We have been going to Jambo Grill since it opened its doors may years ago. However, the service (or rather the lack of) that we experienced today was abysmal. The staff were not attentive at all, we had to get their attention to take our food order. It took much longer than usual for our food to arrive. The drinks had no straws in it, upon requesting them ,we were told they had run out! We had to wait almost 20 minutes after we had finished eating for our plates to be removed. The waiter decided to stack the dirty plates in front of us at the table, by collecting all the condiment servers, dirty napkins and cutlery in one of the bread baskets used to serve naans. Once we had been through that experience, it was a waiting game again.....15 minutes before we got our check. I will not be recommending this palce as readily as I used to. It will be a long while before we return. read more

The food is good. I love my chicken briyani but what really bothered me was how slow everything was. Yes, server did an excellent job in entertaining us. It was a friend's birthday and they even gave her a free dessert with lighted candle on it. BUT really slow service in my opinion. Took an hour and half to get my food. He told me that the drink that came free if I checked in yelp is refillable.. But I never got that refill. I think if I have an entire time to spare, I will come back. If not, I guess .. not. Slow service, orders got all mixed up and in top of that no apology from the owner who was hiding in the back. To make matters worse, we were made to pay the gratuity and when we refused to do so because of poor service the supervisor threatened to call the cops on us. The service in this crap hole is a joke!!!! We waited 45 minutes and only one member of our group of 3 got their food (lamb lollipop); only part of their meal to be exact. We waited another 10 minutes thinking the rest is on its way. The side of spicy fries with the lamb never made it . Neither did anyone else's food. We were all very hungry so we shared the lamb lollipops. We waited another 22minutes (I timed it). And we asked about our meal as we noticed a table of 4 that arrived after us got their food. The server responded with "I will ask." There were no apologies for the long delay nor any feeling of sorrow or sympathy from the server. She came back and said "it's on its way!" Then ran off to another table without giving us a chance for further enquiries. Another 7 minutes went by and we decided to leave. I wanted to pay for the lamb and get out of there. The owner simply said "you don't have to if you don't want to." So we simply walked out and will certainly never return. There were no explanations given, no actions were taken to make us stay and nothing more was said by the owner to satisfy us. My worst nightmare... Went here for a friends graduation dinner. I have an anaphylaxis allergy to all nut and peanuts. I'm always very careful and sure to ask if nuts are used or if there are traces of nuts. I asked the manager and he assured me no nuts. As I settled into enjoying my dish I immediately felt my throat itching and getting narrow, within a minute or so I was having severe difficulty breathing. I knew at that moment there must have been a nut or some sort of cross contamination of peanuts in my dish. My group called over the waitress to let her know while my friends called 911 for me. The waitress than mentions that they use nuts... The manager comes over to see whats going on and when realizing that I can not breath starts shouting and insisting that they use no nuts and theres no contamination while the waitress is telling me they use nuts. While I am having difficulty breathing the manager is being super defensive and just telling me over and over that they do not use nuts... I can't even reply because I can not breath. Eventually the paramedics arrive and I am taken to the hospital. Through out my whole experience the manager never apologized or asked me if I was alright. read more

If I could give this place NO stars I would. I ordered 2 dishes tonight online with their delivery service ( that isnt actual FROM jambo grill, yay ) In the special request box i put that i wanted saffron rice with BOTH meals instead of regular rice and fries. ( The guy at Jambo Grill told me my request won't be missed if I put it into the request box ) But GUES WHAT it was missed. The order was 40 bucks. At Jambo grill they printed out my order but my saffron rice request didnt print out. So it was THEIR mistake. They ended up making and sending me REGULAR RICE and FRIES instead of the rice i asked for and I tried to get them to send me the order I asked for and they wouldnt. I got robbed tonight. They offered to give me a credit on the things I didnt get....for what? So I'll be forced to go back to this restaurant that I never go to in the first place? The also said i can file a complaint with the delivery service. IT WASNT THE DELIVERY SERVICE's MISTAKE! IT was YOUR Mistake Jambo Grill! I always go to SIMBA restaurant ( on Denman ) for a reason. I, my wife and two other guests went to the restaurant to celebrate my anniversary on 16th Aug, 2016. We ordered, beef ribs, shrimp curry and butter chicken. While every other food was delicious but the butter chicken was a disaster. It was as if somebody has put chunks of chicken in yellow curry and spread some butter and black pepper on top of it. It was very watery in texture and tasted nothing like regular butter chicken. As an Asian, I ate butter chicken in hundreds of restaurants and if someone brings this dish in front of me and tell me this is butter chicken I won't agree. I asked for the manager and the Owner stepped up. We told him that all their food items were good but we didn't like the butter chicken as it was nothing like it. He was an old Indian guy who instead of being sorry started arguing with us. He kept on saying how their butter chicken is unique and while 99% restaurant follows the same recipe, they are the original makers of butter chicken. He also went a step further by saying we are the only clients in 12 years to complain about the butter chicken. He kept embarrassing me in front of my wife and other guests while I just wanted to say that we didn't like his nontraditional butter chicken. He argued for long 10 minutes and finally saying "What you want me to say, we are cooking it wrong?" I finally gave up and left the place. If I am paying over $100 I at least deserve a simple sorry or "we will try to improve next time." The owner knew it was my anniversary as we send a cake inside to bring it later after dinner, but instead he kept embarrassing us. I work in hospitality industry and this is definitely not how you deal with guests. Please don't order Butter Chicken if you go there and keep yourself prepared for embarrassment if you don't like their food. Cheers!! read more

A group of friend and I went to the Jambo Grill on Saturday night, and I have to say the food was AMAZING! My boyfriend and I split the halibut, cornish hen, and the lollipop prawns. Definitely one of the best meals we've had ! All of our group was raving about it, and the owner checked in to make sure everyone was okay and enjoying the food. While waiting for my food, and as I am watching my neighbors eat since they received there food earlier, I decide to taste what they are eating (which I am sure everyone does at a restaurant) I am sure you want to try out other options. The owner decides to remind us not once, but twice that we are not allowed to share. I understand the business perspective but we already ordered our food. I went to the Jambo Grill for the first time last Thursday as this place came highly recommended by a friend. Four of us met there and had a BLAST. The food was incredible, the best I have had in a long while. I ordered the Boneless ribs. It is very obvious they take pride in the freshness of their food. The flavour was awesome. A friend got the butter shrimp which i ended up stealing bites because I fell in love with the sauce! Best curry sauce I have tasted. Fresh Naan, attentive staff, and a fabulous owner who checked in with us to see that everything was to our liking. SO GREAT. Such a great experience and a fabulous neighbourhood feel. We stayed for a few hours, the owner noticed we were having such a great time eating and laughing, he even brought over some fabuous Chai tea to try. We felt so taken care of. I will be taking my daughter here next week! read more

Worst food service possible. I went with my mother and waited a good 15 minutes to be seated, one person said she would seat us and walked away and never came back. Finally I had to go ask another person to be seated. After that to place our order, it took another 15 minutes. It took them literally 15 minutes to get us water and they served other people and waited on them hand and foot. We asked the owner why it was taking so long and he was beyond rude. Absolutely condescending and rude beyond words. I was baffled at his tone and the best part was he didn't even bother to apologize. Other people around us had similar problems. To get our main it took another 45 minutes. We ended up staying as long as 2 hours or so just for waiting. Slow, terrible service and a rude owner. Would never go back there again and do not recommend people to go there based on the service. read more

Never never book a Reservation at Jambo Grill, because if you are a few mins late the owner will charge you 15% surcharge and give the table to someone else and collect another 15% surcharge from another customer . You be disappointed if you reserve a table and come a few mins late. Re-heated mojo in the microwave, Ribs full of fat and Stale rice That's what you get at JG, you are served garbage but the owner will charge you the full price and if you complain to him he will tell you "That's how the ribs are " or " The mojos are freshly fried, Bullshit! I know the difference of a mojo that's been fried before you serve it and a re-heated in the microwave. A mojo that has been fried will have a crisp and a little oily look to it, and a re-heated mogos will have rubbery texture and look like your biting beef jerky. It's ok you can get away with your white clientele but an East Indian customers will know they have been ripped. read more

This place must have the worst service in the entire city. We came here one afternoon for lunch as someone in our group was celebrating her birthday. The restaurant was basically empty as there were only two parties dining and there were two servers. I ordered a very messy meal and asked twice for extra napkins as soon as the food arrived. I finally received them about 40 mins later when I was basically finished my meal. What irked me most is that the server did not even apologize. The food itself was reasonably good and fresh for the most part. One dish we ordered, however, tasted like it had been defrosted and re-heated. The server was reaching over very rudely, invading our personal space, to collect dirty plates. He did not apologize nor did he say "excuse me". We had to wait so long for our bill. When the server brought the bill, instead of placing it on the table and going away, he is standing there rudely tapping his credit card machine waiting for our credit card. We have been warned that this establishment often makes "mistakes" with the bill so to check it carefully. Difficult to do when the server is standing over you constantly making tapping sounds on his credit card machine. I doubt we will return here anytime soon. Their website does not even have a place for feedback. I get the impression that the owners just don't care about the service their staff provide to their customers. read more

After about a handful of crappy service experiences at this restaurant I decided I would never go back in to eat and instead just order for take out . That didn't really work either . I called in to place my order I asked for an item and the girl who answered said hold on she went to ask someone else about the item seemed confused and then without telling she passed me to another girl to place my order . This girl seemed to understand what I wanted as I told her 3 times what exactly my order was . I get my husband to pick up the order and what do you know it's the wrong item. I called back to let her know it wasn't right and that I wasn't too happy with the service , she did apologize but she didn't even offer to make the order right and at least get me what I originally ordered . terrible experience I don't recommend this place to anyone if your looking for a good dining experience with good service . just awful. only thing that's good is the food read more

i went to jambo grill after a long time...remembering how good it was the last time i went...i had heard mediocre things lately but went anyway based on experience. the worst part is, i took a friend who was new to indian food so this was her first indian experience. suffice it to say it was terrible. the food was horrendously bland (butter chicken and lamb curry) and just plain bad. no flavour, no taste. i hoped the service would make up for it but it seemed we were invisible. i had to ask for my water to be filled multiple times, we asked for our bill three times, and our dishes were never cleared. this may not be everyone's experience as i noticed the servers check on the same tables three times. the pakoras also came with no sauce, every thing such as pickle or onion is extra, it is tremendously overpriced (pakora for $8, really?!) i definately dont recommend this to anyone nor will i go back and will be sure to tell others as my friend thinks i am a complete idiot for taking her there and doesnt want Indian food again. i originally wanted to take her to himalayn peak at sfu burnaby but they were closed. read more
