My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at Cayenne Bistro on July 9th. The moment we walked in, we were impressed. The ambiance was lovely and the aroma was heavenly. The server was kind and helpful. The owner chatted with us at the end of our meal. What a nice man! When he discovered that it was our anniversary, we were generously given a delicious dessert. The food was incredible! Each bite was like a bouquet of flavour exploding in the mouth. The owners, employees, fellow patrons all made it seem less like dining in a restaurant but more like coming home. We'll tell anyone who will listen (and we have been) to go and try it. The owner Naz was very warm and hospitable. He went around checking on customers and us very often and thanked us for coming when we were waiting to pay our bill. We were a big group of 12 including infant and toddler and they managed everything beautifully. Another big group of 10+ came in when we were leaving around 9+ pm. The place was not huge but they can do big groups. Reservations recommended. This was my second time trying East African/Indian food. I still didn't know much about it. R and I shared a choma (grilled) platter which had 3 types of meat, choice of carbs and raw vegs. The server recommended Chicken Serena which was grilled chicken with some sauce and herbs. This was my favorite dish. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The other two meats were the beef ribs (pretty good) and Mishkaki (skewer beef - a bit dry and hard). I love the masala potatoes which was the best thing on the platter. The raw vegs looked like coleslaw without any sauce. It was just a dab of sauce on the side. Not enough for the shredded vegs. I also had the masala chai which was very weak and very bland. Skip this tea. R tried the on tap beer - Baadshah Pilsner - a south Asian craft beer produced by Magic Malt Brewing in Langley. I had a wonderful time here. First off to mention or the highlight of this restaurant: Great Food, Great and Approachable Owner and of course Great Atmosphere with a live singer onsite on a Friday night. I had a great time dining at the restaurant. We were a table of 12 people. For big groups over 6 there is an 18% gratuity. I ordered the non alcoholic lychee Bellini and B got the Tusker beer for our drinks. The lychee bellini was a good deal for $5 and it was very tasty. I personally liked it alot. B got the Kheema Mani which was East African stuffed flatbread with ground beef. I had a bit of it and it was very delicious. I got the beef ribs with masala potatoes. It also came with a side of salad. The beef ribs was flavorful. Portion size was pretty good. B also got a side of garlic naan. That was delicious. The naan was made fresh inhouse. It's not very often my wife and I get to try out a new restaurant that caters to my gluten allergy. It can be hit and miss, and sometime we default to chains that have one or two options. Today, on a day trip into Vancouver, we found an East African/Indian fusion bistro that was featured in the Find Me GF app. The staff were incredibly committed to catering to my allergy, but the food itself (not to mention the choices) was some of the best, most unique collection of dishes we'd encountered in years! Our appy, Mogo (pronounced mo-ho) fries were made from cassava, fried and lightly dusted with spice, with accompanying tamarind and creamy coconut dipping sauces. Then the mains were a creamed coconut chicken curry dish (Zanzibar Kuku Paka) with Basmati, and Chicken Serena (bbq chicken tenders in a creamy tomato and cilantro sauce), paired with saffron vegetable rice and sriracha coleslaw ... just WOW! If you are in the Burnaby area - whether Celiac or not ... this is an outstanding place to eat. We had a great evening at Cayenne Bistro. We did not have reservations on a Sunday night but it is probably a good idea to make reservations as it is a small restaurant. There is parking on the street but there is also a small parking lot right beside the restaurant where we parked. The tables are nicely spaced apart and you are able to enjoy the company of your dining companions without being crowded and listening to other tables. We really liked the ambiance and décor of Cayenne. It felt like we were dining in someone's home. We were served by Nazir the owner. He had one helper but Nazir was the one who took care of us all evening. He engaged with us and we enjoyed talking to Nazir about travelling and his background. The service was absolutely impeccable. Nazir gave us suggestions and recommendations for our meal. We had a bottle of wine with our dinner. It is a small wine list but there is a good selection and prices are reasonable. For an appetizer we shared pili pili prawns with naan. It was delicious. The pili pili sauce was nice and spicy. The naan soaked up the sauce and we thoroughly enjoyed it. For our main course we shared the choma platter that consisted of beef mishkaki (beef skewers), beef short ribs, chicken serena, masala potatoes and salad. The chicken was a bit dry but it the rest of the food was well prepared very good. For dessert we shared a special of the day - mango with ice cream and other seasonings. The portions are generous. Nazir introduced us to his wife Zeimina who is the cook. It really enjoyed the time spent at Cayeene and highly recommend a visit there. read more

I had dinner with a friend at Cayenne Bistro and Grill and had a good time! Service was great. The staff are very friendly and helpful with our needs. But when it was busy, it was a bit hard to get a hold of them The restaurants ambience is beautiful. I did not expect it to be as fancy as I had imagined. The place was clean and had a nice aesthetic to it. You can tell the owners care about their business and their customers. Food- i cannot remember the original name of the dish but we shared biryani and an appetizer platter which consisted of African/Indian dishes. The food was amazing and rich in flavour. There was a slight kick to the biryani even when I asked for mild, but I can't complain cause the mango Lassi I had helped balance it out. Highly recommend this place for groups or intimate settings. We had reservations. Outside was a very dark and stormy night while inside Cayenne Bistro & Grill was cozy, warm and welcoming. Our 4 top enjoyed mango lagers, an appy platter and veg pakoras to start. Then we shared a Choma platter with yummy nylon bhajia, Cayenne garlic prawns, Kashmiri chicken. Everything was delicious and flavoured to perfection. Highly recommend! There was a singer performing with an amazing voice range and was just right for a small dining atmosphere; enjoyable and fun but never intrusive as we could still carry on conversations. I regret not taking photos before digging in but honestly the aromas were just too enticing to wait! Vegetarian options: There are many options for all omnivores, vegetarians, vegan and gluten free. We ordered a few nights ago for a group of us to nosh on some new flavour profiles. We were looking for a change from the traditional Indian fare we usually go for. We didn't dine on site, but rather had someone pick up the food and bring it to us. They reported that everyone who worked there was sweet and very good at the customer service game. We ordered some samosas, some Zanzibar style chicken curry and the veggie curry, and then some mogos which are basically cassava fries. Everything was very tasty, with particular "woo hoos!" applied to the mogos and the veggie curry which had a great heat and profile. I have to be honest... the value wasn't there compared to other spots locally. Yes, the dish came with some rice and some naan, but the naan was not freshly made (seemed store bought) and the rice was a small container, not even enough to finish the curry off... and the chicken only had two small thighs in it, an egg, and a potato with a TON of sauce. It doesn't mean we won't be back, but it won't be the go to for value. Definitely worth a visit though for the new flavours and, quite frankly, the lovely customer service. read more

The staff are genuine and friendly and gave us excellent recommendations and information about the menu, side sauces, etc. The food at Cayenne is rich and flavourful. We tasted things we've never tasted before! We had the Piri Piri chicken with masala potatoes and salad. The chicken had the perfect amount of spice and heat. The Kuku Paka chicken was served in a wonderful coconut sauce that was so good with the naan bread dipped in it. (So good!!) For dessert we shared a small bowl of mango ice cream, which was refreshing and delightful. The cheque came with a really nice little treat that we never had before: candied fennel seeds. Cayenne Bistro and Grill is a newish African/Indian fusion restaurant that opened up recently along 6th Street in New Westminster, taking over the space by the former Malaysian eatery known as Makan Place. The renovations done to the interior is a nice upgrade from the prior looks. On my visit, the host was quite friendly and made an effort to explain the different types of dishes (probably because he assumed because of my Asian background that I had no experience with African or Indian cuisine). I decided on the Zanzibar Kuku Paka ($14.95) which comes with naan and he up-sold me on a bowl of rice ($2.75) which was a good idea since this dish is very saucy. I also paired it with a Rubicon Passion Fruit Sparking Soda ($2.25) which is a canned soft drink. This dish includes bone-in chicken cooked in a creamy yellow curry milk base with East African spices and includes a hard-boiled egg with large chunks of potatoes. I really enjoyed the curry sauce in this dish. Served with a medium-heat, the intensity of the heat grows over time in your mouth. I returned about a week later and ordered their Beef Ribs with Salad and Naan ($16.95) which was served with a tangy tamarind sauce and hot sauce to customize your dish. I found the "medium" level of spiciness had a good kick and the plentiful amount of ribs were tender and juicy. A couple of weeks later, I tried their Cayenne Sheekh Kebabs ($14.95). As with my other visits, the food does take a while to come out (this dish took about 20 minutes even though the place was relatively quiet). The marinated ground beef in these kebabs was a bit dry on the inside but the dish did come with some dipping sauce which made it better. I also noticed that the naan here is a bit chewier than I'm used to (with a bit more browning on one side) but it's not a deal breaker. A few things to note if you decide to visit... the specials for the day are written on a small board hanging on the wall near the front door (unless you're seated near there, it's difficult to see), tables have individual cayenne pepper shakers (as well as salt shakers) if you want to customize your dish, and the food does take a while to come out (especially if they're busy). read more

Recently found this restaurant in the Entertainment book - where they offer buy one get one free entree. The restaurant has a number of East Indian dishes with African influence and have a list of specials offered on top of their regular menu. We tried the beef ribs and the fish paka on rice. The portion of the beef ribs was on the smaller side for it's price. There were about 7 small pieces of beef ribs with salad and a choice Naan or rice. The ribs were tasty though and that tamarind sauce they offer was a really nice touch. The fish paka is similar to a stew curry dish with a very bold coconut milk taste, which worked great with lots of rice and Naan. Overall, a neat experience trying out a fusion between African and east Indian dishes. And the owner and staff were very friendly and constantly check up on you. read more

The restaurant was clean and covid protocols were followed. We ordered the appy platter, Hyderbadi Chicken, and their Zanzibar kuku Paka. The Zanzibar kuku was my favourite because the chicken was so tender, it was cooked so perfectly. I also ordered a Chai tea and you can tell it was homemade versus store bought or from a tea bag. Overall my friend and I had a wonderful experience and would definitely come back to try other dishes. This is my second order from Cayenne grill. I had Beef Ribs last week was thinking about it whole week, so I decided to order it again. I got medium spicy, and I enjoy the heat. The veggie rice goes well with the ribs. Today, I only got beef ribs, but I had a slice of almond cake last week. It came with a scoop of ice cream, and they put the ice cream in a separate container - I thought it was thoughtful. The cake was great too. read more

We had dinner here at Cayenne a few weeks ago and it was superb! The owner took the time to describe many of the unique items on their menu. Pikora is one of my favorite appies and we were not disappointed! I had one of the daily special entrees- fresh halibut - the blend of spices was so flavourful AND not overpowering; the fish was fresh, moist and tender. Yum! My partner had tandoori chicken skewers which were very tasty, tender and moist. We capped it off with 2 desserts created by the owner's wife who is also very picky about the quality of the ingredients used in all the foods served. The sizzling brownie was amazing - it arrived with a scoop of ice cream on top with the brownie on a searing hot cast iron pan. The owner poured the chocolate sauce over top at our table with great amount of sizzling resulting - to die for! There are also many "to go" dessert items. We tried a shortbread nut ball laced with beautiful spices - melts in your mouth. We will definitely return to Cayenne and bring friends with us. Thank you to the owners! read more

Unfortunately, we hadn't try everything on the menu to give my true review (usually my guideline is returning a few times to evaluate the consistency). However, I'd like to give a quick review. Really loved the curry which I feel was by far the best in the whole meal. We had chicken in 2 different dishes and was quite tender. The beef was quite tough though. Workaround would be cut into very small pieces to get pass that. Garlic Naan was kinda tasteless. The best I've had so far was from Kalash. Papadam could need some spices also. Masala fries were too soggy for my liking but maybe it's just me. Mango lassie lacked flavor (just like plain Greek yogurt). I requested to add more mango pulp and sugar. Service was courteous. I asked to pay for a couple pieces of Mogo but the owner just gave it to us complementary! How nice! I emphasized no cilantro on my platter, but still came with a lot. They were nice enough to make me another order instead of just picking them out in the kitchen and bring it back. The new plate was missing the coleslaw though. They were busy so I can overlook the boo-boo. Next time I would wear light fabric coz the smell of the place socked up my coat and sweater. I liked the semi-modern décor, the feature wall matches with my purse won brownie points! Second time coming here in 1 week. First time tried the appetizers (samosas, kabobs, and mogo and nylon bhajias) All these were good...except my preference for the nylon bhajias is thinner sliced potatoes and a thinner batter. Still waiting for a East African restaurant to emulate Maaru's bhajias in Nairobi which had a more robust batter with a fresh tomato onion tamarind chutney. I digress Second visit we ordered the masala fish (tilapia) accompanies with Daal and Rice and the mixed choma platter which had short ribs, mishkaki and chicken piri piri. Vegetable pakoras to start. All the food was very good. Fish was excellent as was the daal and rice. Mishkaki (cubed beef bbq'd on a skewer) was a little overdone and dry, but the piri piri chicken was very tasty. The service was good and attentive. Really like the owner visiting the tables and checking in. My minor complaints are that the acoustics are quite poor in the restaurant...its hard to converse when other louder patrons three tables down can be heard over your own conversation. Music was absent this visit. Second complaint that can be fixed was that the masala fish came out first (this being the spicier dish than the other one, hence should be consumerd after the blander one) before the kuku choma came out The roti to eat the fish with, didnt come out till the end after two reminders to waitstaff. That should accompany the dish it was paried with....kinda like fajitas without the tortilla shells to scoop up with! Liked the parking available for the restaurant and great decor and great menu. What an absolute gem of a restaurant here ! I came here with a group of six people , and we ordered about 10 distinct items from the menu. Every single dish was delicious . Spices are the real star here , as they shine through on every dish. The beef biryani was a must have , as are the beef kabobs and lamb chops , naan..,roti....it's all delicious. As someone that works in the industry, I was very pleased to see what this family has done to bring back the culture of a true neighborhood restaurant. In fact, I was so impressed by the care and passion they put, in the food and the service, that I went back again for dinner the same day I discovered this gem. To be more specific, I first ordered a KUKU PAKA with a side of rice for lunch. From the first bite I noticed a nice smokiness and a complex richness in the curry. Looking at the chicken peaces, you see that they were grilled first then finished cooking in the sauce "a la minute". To be fair, most restaurants don't even bother these days for many reasons perhaps mainly because most people can't even tell the difference. The meat is usually cooked in a large curry batch then just reheated and served. For dinner, they had us sample a few appies an grill items and to be honest they were all pretty good. If there's something you pick up right away is that every thing (except the naan) was made from scratch with real love and care for the product, which is something that has became quite hard to find in our industry here (unless you're in japan lol). long story short, They've only been open for 8 months and I hope to see them carry on the passing hopefully for generations. read more
