Not impressed with the food. The butter chicken was too thick and tomato-y. Tasted like tomato paste. The veggie biryani looked old and overcooked and again, tasted like tomato paste. The naan was flat, not fluffy. Wasted $45. On top of this, they said it would take 20 minutes. It took 40 minutes. Disappointing experience. I will not be going back. Solid Indian and Pakistani place near Fraser and 41st. Don't let the dumpy exterior scare you off. Parking is available on the side streets. There are also 1-2 spots behind the building. The inside feels pretty dated, but also almost like something straight out of India/Pakistan. The place was packed with locals. Guess they know where the good food can be found. Staff were friendly and helpful. Butter chicken - can't go wrong. Chicken curry - nice amount of heat. Lamb gosht - nice large chunks of meat. Good food but most of the dishes were not available that we asked for, we were explained that lots of the dishes are new and have only been printed on the menu only and not prepared yet. Pakistani and Indian cuisine along Fraser street, Vancouver For my appetizer i got the beef samoza it was good but still nothing can beat the one from Surrey i used to order from a friend. For my main entree i ordered the Dewan grill combo this consist of lamb,Kabab,Chicken Kabab,Beef boti,chicken tikka serve on a sizzler.all entrees are serve with a choice of naan or rice i got the naan. I actually dont eat lamb and i specified it to the server,she said that she will add more beef instead but still it was served with lamb....well im in a rush and already hungry so i just set the lamb aside and brought home to my roommate. Good grilled items very tasty and with that green spicy sauce everything tasted perfect(excluding the lamb) For my dessert i had the Gulab jamun with ice cream....sweet and very sweet.Not bad. Another place that you bring home the smell of the foods in your clothing. Neat and small place, with friendly service. Thank god I found you (Goat Biryani), I was lost without you... Let me be frank with you: the city of Vancouver lacks good Indian food. So many places miss the mark. Not this place! A friend of mine brought me here, who heard about it from a friend of his, who probably heard about it from another friend. When you make proper, authentic food, people hear about it and they come. When you water down your food for the Western palate, you lose everything. This is real Indian/Pakistani food and it tastes great! Good food!!! Ordered take-out on a Saturday night and this place was hopping! They were running a half hour past our stated pick-up time and it is easy to see why. It is a small place, and the restaurant was full. There were a lot of Door Dash type drivers waiting to pick up and people waiting for their personal orders too! The kitchen was rocking! We were in town visiting and knew we had picked the right place when we saw how popular it was. We got a chicken curry, a lamb curry, a goat biryani, paneer tikka, pappadum, rice and garlic naan which was the perfect amount for our party of six. The food was perfect heat and monumental flavor! I don't like to write a bad review. However, this was the first time eating at this restaurant, and it will be the last time. The service was good. We ordered the lamb biryani -/ the menu says it is boneless. However, it is a plate heaping with flavoured rice and chunks of lamb. They were pieces of bone throughout the rice. The lamb had layers of fat on the outside. Not to our liking. It came with a small serving of thin yogurt. The chicken curry was good, but it was very spicy. We had asked for mild, but we were told that it's premade. The veggie dish was a mishmash of vegetables and a thick sauce. Could not taste the individual vegetables. Each entrée comes with naan and it is a substantial amount of nann. You can also order white rice instead of the naan. read more

A hidden gem - a Pakistani approach to dishes that most Canadians would think of as Indian (plus some that are more Pakistani). Well worth seeking out. Finally made it back here again. I must commend the chef, the food is here is very consistent, and consistently authentic and delicious. I need to try some other menu items, but one of the mixed grills, the eggplant Bartha and the regular dal make for an excellent meal. They do a lot of take out/delivery business so it is usually easy to get a seat. read more

I was glad to find Mark's awesome review and other review got me coming here. It was a great experience. My sister and I went here on a rainy sunday afternoon for Indian food. Dewan E-Khass is a small Indian/ Pakistani restaurant on Fraser which has limited seating(there are 7 tables). Very quiet and clean restaurant I have to say. It was odd being served by Russian waitress at first, but she did a really good job. My water got refilled often without mentoning and she checked making sure we were doing okay. Therefore service was professional and fast. We got Mogo ($5.99), Chicken Curry($9.99) and Masala Chai($1.90) and they were all tasty and fresh. First, Mogo (cassava fries) was crispy and delicious. It was already seasoned a bit and enhanced even more flavour with chutney. Yum. Chicken Curry was so delicious. We ordered it as medium spicy and the Indian spices were so flavourful. It comes with rice or naan so we picked naan and couldn't stop dipping curry sauce to naan. Naan bread was unbelievably huge, soft and crispy. One of the perfect naan breads ever! Chai tea was also good. We were blown away by the service and food. I have to say it was a five star experience. The only downside would be the small seating spaces. read more

It's not a five because, well, it's no Cactus Club in terms of décor. --- The dishes I order are out-of-this-world, best-in-town, good. There are a few dishes that I didn't like. Notably, they have a bone-in chicken main dish--Chicken Karahi--that was basically all bone and no meat. Maybe that is normal; regardless, didn't like it. --- I recommend the Butter Chicken, the Eggplant Bartha, the Shashliks, The Grilled Chicken Wings, and the Dewan Grill Mix. --- Entrées come with rice or naan, your choice. Good parking on that stretch of Fraser. Sometimes they are understaffed. It can get uncomfortably crowded at times. Seats about 24. All were really good, fast cooking time, the fish was the best out of all of them, even my parents who don't like fish loved it. Service was good. * New Pakistani with promise * This spot has turned over again and the new restaurant is called Dewan-E-Khass. They have put up new signage and made the interior quite welcoming. It feels less hole-in-the-wall than previous restaurants in the spot have felt. The menu has a mixture of Pakistani and Indian cuisine. I ordered the lunch special vegetable biryani ($7.99) which came with a complimentary side of raita. The spicing on the biryani was spot on. The complex seasoning profile highlighted the vegetables mixed in nicely with a very pleasant level of heat. The veggies were cooked perfectly so that they had a slight chew to them instead of just being mushy. The complimentary raita served to cool the spice level and the small bits of vegetables in the raita added nice texture as well. Overall a lovely lunch for a very reasonable price. Wow! Great meal for four with a big variety of flavourful and distinct dishes: lamb biryani, lamb curry, chicken karahi, daal, eggplant and garlic naan. Lamb was a little tough, but the sauces made up for it. Chicken karahi was so different than typical Indian dishes. I'd try the fresh karahi next time. They didn't have any goat so I would have loved to try goat curry. Now i know why my friends recommended this place. Very very easy on the wallet too. I'm not sure why people were complaining about the service cuz the manager/owner came over right away with water and helped us order. The waitress who served us after was very polite. I've had a few Indian food takeout in 2018 and this is by far THE best. I had the butter chicken but there's so many options on the menu. Some I haven't seen before Nihair, Handi etc. I had my butter chicken with naan. Yum. The sauce was not watery like how some places do it. It was thick with chunks of chicken. It was very flavourful and had the right amount of heat. I knock them down one star 'cause part of the naan tasted frozen. You can tell it's not made fresh on the day off. Deserves all 5 stars. We got lamb Kerahi and sizzling bbq chicken as our mains and they both were so tasty, authentic and value for money. Not to mention huge portions and great service. Definitely one of the best Indian-Pakistani foods in town. A must try if you're in the neighborhood. read more

Wanted to keep exploring Indian food options in town and found this indian/pakistani place, se there we went. Smaller place than we were expecting, with few tables oddly placed, ones too close to the others. But who cares if food is good! The server was by himself, took some time till he came to ask for our order. We got veggie pakora (was good), goat biryani (good taste but way too spicy even after asking for getting it just mild, big portion) and tried the butter chicken with rice and naan (rice never showed up, naan was good and the chicken... was mostly sauce and little pieces of chicken you had to fish). Masala chai was great and ordered a salty lassi that never came neither. Asked for the two items we were missing few times, but had to cancel them after we finished just in case the server wanted to bring them after being done... cannot understand or find a reason. He said he was alone and too busy but... (true thing is he got several calls for take out food) still he should forget about anything being only three tables at a time. Our second time here after having a great meal a few months ago. And our high expectations were more than met with the freshness and multiple flavors resulting in a fantastic meal. We ordered the barbecued chicken (tandoori), goat karahi, mixed vegetables along with rice and naan. I was tempted to order a biryani as I recalled how good it was but as the servings are so large we knew it would be far too much. A large family gathering was occupying most of the tables but this did not detract from the service at all. The servers were very pleasant and accommodating and we did not have to wait long at all for our meal. After the rush died down the owner had time to come out to meet customers and ask how everything was. All in all, a great meal! read more

Back when I was living in BC for a short period of time I was a regular at Dewan-E-Khass. I personally found that many halal restaurants in the lower mainland area either offered poor service or poor quality of food ( sometimes both). This place however was THE exception the food quality was amazing as well as the service. I would always order the grill mix combo, butter chicken, and biryani. The naan were always fresh and crispy which was my favourite, the kebabs and tikkas were spiced accordingly and would make my mouth water as they would come out sizzling on a bed of peppers and onions. If/when I do go back to BC this will definitely be my first stop. read more

Randomly picked this place on SkipTheDishes whilst browsing their Indian food selection, and I'm so glad I did!! The Barbeque Leg and Thighs were so good. You get 2 leg and thighs, and it comes with naan or rice. I loved the smoky flavour from the grill, and the spices/marinade made the chicken very flavourful throughout. Visiting from Seattle. We did a take out from this place based on reviews. Chicken Biryani on Saturday night was ok, not bad but chicken and rice cooked separately. The hostess said they do a real biryani (chicken and rice cooked together) on Fridays and Sundays. Butter Chicken was good but could've used a few more pieces of chicken. On our way back home we felt the need to eat something out rather than cooking at home. This restaurant happens to be the closest one with halal meat option according to yelp. The interior was a bit small but classically well decorated. We ordered some beef and chicken samosa , mixed grill platter ans biryani chicken. we were the only customers to be served since we came in a bit late (almost by closing time) but still the waiting time was relatively longer than normal. At that point I started to lower my expectations to be honest , but thanks to the samosa that came in the right moment to offer me a glimpse of hope. When the main dishes were served the whole first impression was turned upside down : I m not a big fan of rice but their biryani was certainly unique with that spicy and soft taste.
