Chicken curry lunch special, extra spicy (though not to us)
    Barry W.

One line review: This was fantastic. We walked over for lunch on the recommendation of a friend from our office. She knew whereof she spoke. We ordered from their lunch special menu -- $10 for dal, rice, naan, salad, and an entree. We selected lamb saag and lamb curry and asked for both spicy. That didn't so much happen, but food was tasty and the portions were generous. Value was excellent. Service was competent. We didn't bring a car, but there should be free parking in the neighborhood. Bottom line: In a single visit, this has become my go-to lunch spot in the area. We'll be back for sure.

    Eggplant bharta and butter chicken
    Ania D.

We've come here multiple times and have ordered the eggplant bharta, the butter chicken, the palak paneer. The reason why I'm knocking some stars off is because of the chicken in the butter chicken. It's usually very dry and the sauce to chicken ratio end up not being right because you end up having to cut open and smother the chicken in sauce. So maybe they can make the chicken cubes smaller or add more sauce, or I don't know but in that regard they could definitely improve. Additionally the sauce that came with the lamb curry had oil separation and was rather oily so maybe use less oil or mix the oil and the other components of the sauce better ? The flavours are good though ! And you can ask for everything at different levels of spiciness and they've always been pretty spot on in that regard.

Onion Kulcha, Palak Paneer, Mango Lassi

Got delivery - overall quite happy with the food. Onion kulcha: This was okay. The taste was good and the onions contrasted nicely with the bread texture, but it was just a little on the damp side when I opened it up. I suspect this is just a consequence of it being wrapped in foil for the 20 minutes it took to be delivered and this wouldn't be an issue if you dined in or just opened it up and ate it sooner. Palak paneer: This was really good! The sauce was very creamy compared to other palak paneer I've tried and the texture was spot on. The sauce to paneer ratio is on the high side but I think that's ideal for this dish. It was very filling. I got the "hot" spice level and it was just right for me - it's definitely hot and spicy but not overwhelmingly so. Would definitely recommend this! Mango lassi: I actually ordered the regular lassi, but I got the mango version? Not sure if they made a mistake or were just out of the regular since there was no note or anything explaining, and they didn't include a copy of the receipt/order. The mango was so good that I didn't really mind the mix-up - it had the right consistency for a lassi which for me is right between milk and milkshake, and the mango didn't totally overpower the tart yogurt. Kheer: It was my first time trying kheer, I liked the texture of the rice which was more fine than other rice puddings I've tried, and the focus seemed to be more on the cream than the rice itself. The subtle spiced taste was refreshing. I had leftovers for everything except the lassi. I think the pricing is right on; even the kheer which had a steep-looking price of $7.70 ended up being a huge serving. I would be interested in dining there in person sometime.

First time here and it won't be my last.....service was GREAT, food was amazing (and quick service), slightly more than other Indian restaurants we've been to, but well worth it. I had the Chicken Mughlai (with a $6.00 add on to make a full dinner with rice, naan and dal) my wife ordered Chana Masala. We also ordered Vegetable Pakoras as an appetizer. The only issue was that our main meal and appetizer combined was too much food, not a bad problem to have :). All the meals on the menu look delicious, so I will definitely be going back to try more of them.

    Chicken tikka

A few days ago, a group of us went out for dinner at Handi. We chose the restaurant based on its convenient location - being midway between UBC and all of our homes. My friend had been there before and vouched for it. When we reached, it was quite empty. We got a very friendly server, and ordered a whole bunch of dishes. I was sharing chicken tikka, chicken korma, kadhai chicken and some naan, rice and dal with my friends; each main dish was good enough to feed two. My favourite was the chicken korma, which came with a thick, creamy, cashew nut based gravy. Although we had asked for medium spicy for both the korma and the kadhai chicken, i found the latter to be quite spicy. Couldn't really enjoy it or taste much beyond the heat. However my friends who don't mind spicy as much, said they liked that more than the korma. Guess it depends on what kind of a preparation you prefer. My pet peeve with all Indian restaurants in Vancouver, is that they use boneless breast pieces for the curries and tikkas (spicy, grilled chicken). That's really not the best type of meat, especially for tikka, since it doesn't let the flavour permeate inside. Well made tikka can be almost butter soft, and for that (or to get anywhere even a little close to it) you should not be using fibrous pieces like from the breast area. But I won't hold that against Handi specifically. I'd say their chicken tikka was as good as any other you would get in Vancouver. At the end, i asked for a slice of mango cheesecake for our friend who was celebrating his birthday. It was not bad, but $7 seems a bit much for the teeny tiny piece they gave us. In general we had nice and friendly service but towards the end they kind of spoiled that by giving us a single bill (without asking us first), and then refused to split the amount. The guy we spoke to regarding this looked like the owner. He looked quite grumpy as he told us that it was OUR responsibility to have asked for separate checks before he printed it out, and apparently whatever is printed is unchangeable. Definitely did not enjoy that surprise at the end.

    Looks good eh?!

From the moment we walked into this brightly lit and pleasantly decorated place, it was a start of a real treat. We had Tandoori chicken which was moist and nicely seasoned. The eggplant bharta was very tasty and good portion. Lamb biriyani was tasty but I wished there were more lamb though. The highlight and agreed by most of us was the Goa fish curry which has quite a few pieces of Alaska cod and not the typical cheap basa fish used by most other Indian restaurants. It was so good and creamy yet not heavy that reminded my partner of the time when we were actually in Goa having one of our best meal while visiting India. We cleaned the plate clean! lol. Service was great too. We plan to be back as we think this is one of the better Indian restaurants in town. They also have other interesting regional/style dishes from Kerala and Angara which I want to try on our next visit.

I made reservations for us for 4pm, so as to take advantage of their Happy Hour. We went earlier today (a Wednesday) and the place was empty at 4pm. I think it fills up later, for dinner. (I still advise making reservations as you never really know if it's going to be busy). Right off the bat, we were blown away by the interior. It is gorgeous! Small, but gorgeous. The murals, the chandeliers, the bar....and omg, the bathrooms. If you visit, you MUST check out the bathrooms. They have the most fabulous sinks I have ever seen. They didn't have a large selection of HH offerings, unfortunately, but what they did have was amazingly good. My friends who were extremely knowledgeable on Indian cuisine ordered for us, and we shared 3 different small plates (tandoori vegetable momos, cochin cauliflower bites, and some sort of delicious fried onions), and 2 desserts (soan paid malai khwaab, and foxtail millet pudding). And just...wow, everything was SO SO good. The three appetizers were so flavorful and the desserts, unlike anything I've ever had before and simply delicious. We also had drinks (but, of course!). One friend had a mango lassi which she loved, one friend had a high ball which she loved, and I had a mango mojito which I loved. (See a pattern? lol). All was great. Our server, Leesa (not sure of spelling) was so incredibly personable and lovely, and a gentleman I gather is the owner came by twice to make sure everything was okay. We felt like VIPs, with all the care and attention we got. Seriously, the folks here could not be nicer. I'm already planning on bringing my two daughters here. I know they'll love this place. Heck, anyone would love this place. My friends and I all plan on returning. Great great place!

We came around 4pm and had a couple of drinks from the regular menu plus the Kerala pepper chicken the momos and the veggie fritters. Again, the food is very good and the prices were reasonable. I will have to come back late night to see if the happy hour issue is rectified at that time as I see the menu is still the exact same as before. ********* Came here after hearing about the recent celebrity visit. First of all, the food is very good the portions are also decent and the prices are reasonable. I would have liked to have come back here for the lunch special as it's walking distance for me, but my visit left a bad taste in my mouth, which I will detail below. The dishes are inventive. There are the usual suspects, but also some that aren't often see at most Indian restaurants in Metro Van. The staff is also very attentive and friendly. The cocktails are pricey, but interesting. The decor is trendy. The bathrooms have an interesting sink feature that I have not seen before. If you're into social media, there's definitely some photo opportunities here. The service is a bit weird as there isn't really a dedicated server for the table. So, basically, we had all sorts of different people taking our drink and food orders, bringing us food, refilling our water and checking in on us. On the plus, it means that you are checked on a lot. On the minus, it is a bit inconsistent because there isn't one single person who knows what is going on with the table, but more a revolving door. For instance, one staff member came and took our drink order, however the wrong drink ended up being made and brought to me by the bartender, even though the drinks had been extensively discussed with the original server. So there's definitely communication issues. My biggest gripe with this restaurant is that we were denied ordering from the happy hour menu by the manager. I did not want to argue about it at the time as the bartender was told in front of us to deny us the happy hour menu, from which we wanted to order some cocktails. At this point, we had already ordered several menu items (in fact so many that the server had advised us we had more than enough food and that we did not need to order an additional dish we were considering) plus full priced cocktails. So it's not like they weren't making money off our table. The reason we were given, which I believe was told to the bartender (to be clear, I do not believe the bartender was at fault, but simply the messenger in this situation), was that the happy hour was only a summer thing. Again, we visually saw the manager instruct the bartender to tell us these things -- they were literally standing in front of our table, less than 5 feet away. This was not only unprofessional, but I found it incredibly dishonest. It was mid-December when we were at the restaurant, 3.5 months after summer had ended. The happy hour menu is literally the first page in the menu book. If a restaurant doesn't want to honour their own happy hour menu, it costs very little to simply reprint the happy hour menu, remove that page completely, or cross it out, if they really want to be cheap. At minimum, they should have honoured the menu for patrons that they gave it to and then rectified the situation for future. For this reason, I cannot recommend this establishment even though the food was very good and I would have otherwise come back and supported this small business.

They have a variety of street food and sort of modern/fusion Indian food on the menu, and also gelato. For their food, I tried their veg cutlet wrap and the soya chaap sandwich. I really enjoyed both, both very flavourful. The wrap seemed like it was probably the healthier option but neither were greasy/heavy. Low spice level but full of flavour. The guy at the counter actually warned me that the chaap wasn't his favourite, but I really liked it, it was very flavourful. I did appreciate the recommendation though, I just know that I like chaap. They have chai and coffee to drink, as well as a huge selection of soft drinks in the fridge. The chai comes from a machine but it's pretty good. I'd give them 5 stars if they made their own though! The convenience of the machine is you can choose from 3 flavours. The cardamom is strong while the masala chai seems sweeter and smoother. I really like that they have dirty chai (chai + espresso) on the menu - I've tried the Western-style dirty chai latte, but this is the first time I've tried it with Indian chai, and it's a nice unique taste! The guys who work here are very friendly and helpful with recommendations. I used to like Dilli Heights but occasionally had problems with the service/atmosphere, so I'm happy that they're back with those issues seemingly resolved for now. I hope they can keep it up!
