I came here with 3 friends for dinner. It was our first time and we found the restaurant from internet searches. The location is central and it was easy to find street parking on Main Street. Even though it was a Saturday, we were the only table for most of the evening. We were a bit anxious because of the lack of customers; however, there were delivery drivers picking up orders regularly, so it looks like most people did not dine in. The place is clean and seating was comfortable. There is a bell on the table for us to call the server when we were ready to order. We ordered the Lamb Shan-e-Babur that serves 2, the Prawn Coconut, and the Chicken Karahi. The dishes do not come with any rice or naan, so we had 2 orders of rice and 2 orders of naan. Even though the rice portion was generous, we still found it quite pricy. Each of us was given a bottle of water (Pure Life), unnecessary use of plastic is not something that I like to see. And even worse was the surprise when we got the bill that there was a charge for it! The food was delivered by a robot. The portion was reasonable and the taste was good. The lamb was well cooked and tender, the prawns tasted very fresh, and the chicken had the perfect taste, the spice level was just right for all of us. The only thing that was a problem was there were some small sharp broken pieces of bone in the Chicken Karahi, my friend had a painful bite when she thought she was only having the sauce on rice. We tend to categorize Indian cuisine as either North (stronger flavours) or South (mellower flavours) but within the North there are three main cuisines - Mughlai, Awadhi and Punjabi. Tandoori Oven is a good place to sample Mughlai Cuisine. Mughlai Cuisine originated from the Mughal Empire where the Turkish Kings ruled and influenced the subcontinent's cuisine with spicier and heavier notes. I had the Lamb Shan-e-Babur (selected serves 2 to share with a friend) from the Mughlai Series and it was delicious. The aromatics bursting with every bite and just love the ginger coming through. Good amount of lamb chunks and the meat fell off the bone easily. Also ordered a side of plain rice and naan bread and both very good. My other two friends had the chicken and goat briyani and both were excellent. Not too salty and just the right amount of heat. The rice was fluffy and portion size very good. Both guys asked for a take out container as they couldn't finish. The restaurant opens till midnight and even at 9pm they were doing a good volume of take outs and locals coming in for a late night dinner. One thing to be aware of - upon being seated, the server placed plastic water bottles on the table. We thought it was free but realized it cost $1 each. Don't drink it if you don't want to be charged. We found the portion size good and the prices very reasonable. Only one server for the evening and she was working hard to serve all and forgot our our pop. We can't blame her as she did her best for us. You pay at the front count. I picked some takeout here on a Friday evening for dinner for the 4 of us and was very underwhelmed by the curries. We called our order in around 6:15 and was told it'd be ready in 25 minutes. We ordered: Chicken tandoori ($15.99) Malai kofta ($11.85) Karahi paneer ($11.69) Butter chicken ($13.49) Random assortment of roti, naan, and rice When I opened the food containers, I was shocked to see that all 3 curries looked like they were made from the same curry base, even though all three curries should be different. Sadly after trying all of them out, I was even more convinced that was the case. I was pretty disappointed; it felt like the restaurant wasn't even trying to make our food correctly. Plus there was so little meat in the butter chicken, probably the least amount I've ever seen in any chicken curry. The only decent dish of the night was the chicken tandoori imo. This is a before and after story. We ordered through uber Eats and the meal arrived in 40 min as promised (although that's a bit long for a.place 15 minutes from us). We ordered butter chicken, lamb curry, and chicken vindaloo. Having dined in there before, we had high expectations as it was a great experience. Yeah, you know what's coming.... The butter chicken had 4 dinky little pieces of chicken, no yogurt on top, and the rest was sauce. Looks like someone forgot the chicken!! Then the lamb curry had bones in. So while it looked like chunks of meat it was actually mostly bones. Same for the chicken vindaloo. By the time we saw how all 3 looked, we all kind of went from a high point to way down low in just minutes. So I say ok I've had enough and called the restaurant and describes my issues. The person who answered the call and said she'll make up for it. I'll just have to order something small and then I can have all 3 entrées redone with more meat. So I asked if a roti,will work and she said yep. Sounded great until I realized that a $2.95 roti will.also include delivery fee and tips again! (I tipped the driver not the restaurant). Another 40 minutes later the new order arrived and Lo and behold all 3 entrées loomed better. Not only did they all have more eat, the butter chicken had yogurt on top and lamb was topped with cilantro both of which were missing the first time. Thoroughly mediocre. Visiting from Texas, and was hoping to try the Indian cuisine here in Vancouver as it had been recommended by others. When I arrived, the restaurant was completely empty, right at lunchtime. I also heard a microwave running in the kitchen a moment before our order was ready. We had the veggie samosas and pakora, chana masala, and palak paneer. I found the pakoras to be rubbery, rather than fresh and crispy. The palak paneer was bland, and had more of an oily than creamy consistency. Would not recommend. The chana masala had a consistency that was reminiscent of wet cat food, the garbanzo beans were overly soft in a watery base. Ultimately, I would recommend eating elsewhere. read more

N was craving Indian food so I picked a few spots and let her choose. She opted for Tandoori Oven which is across the street from Persia Foods. They specialize in Pakistan and Indian food. We dropped in on a Monday evening (around 7:15pm) and the place was dead. For good reason because the inside was stifling. No fan or anything inside which made it almost unbearable. We decided to get takeout. Oddly, the lady didn't bother to give us any utensils or napkins. Check before you leave. The menu consists of appetizer, vegetarian, lamb, goat, chicken, beef, kabab & tandoori, biryani, seafood, burgers & wraps, bread and desserts. Crazy that everything on the menu used to be under $10. Entrees are now in the $8.99 to $14.99 range. We weren't asked about heat level so none of our dishes were spicy. - 2x Plain naan ($1.75 each) - two slices per order. Fluffy and fresh but fairly standard. - Lamb biryani ($12.99) - lamb was cooked on the bone and came out tender. Tasty and rice was aromatic. - Chicken tikka masala ($11.49) - sauce was on the sweeter side. Not many pieces of chicken. - Palak paneer ($8.99) - fresh spinach with cubes of cottage cheese and spices. This was my favourite dish of the night. Spinach excellently cooked and paneer was enjoyable. Would get this again. Don't bother staying in. Cockroach in Chicken Curry We ordered DoorDash delivery from Tandoori Oven after checking out Yelp's recommendation and review ratings. While eating the chicken daal gosht I found a type of cockroach in the curry. I almost vomited on my plate. Can't stop thinking how many were possibly ground up with the rest of the spices. I do understand that restaurants are struggling to stay open at this time. So, before writing a review on Yelp and reporting to DoorDash, I thought of informing the restaurant. I called them but the person I spoke with was rude and in complete denial that they have any insects problem. I was hoping that they would acknowledge and take some action to do a thorough check, and get an external pest controller to help them out. That way it could help all the future customers ordering from the place. Instead, the person asked me to call and order next time and would help me in some other way, implying to give away free food. They even asked if I needed money back for the order. At some point, they even said either DoorDash or us could have let the cockroach go in the curry. The curry comes completely packed in a container. I don't see how that could have happened. Needless to say, not going to order from this place again. read more

Masala Chai $1.99, is not presweetened so you can adjust to taste, and if you ask for a refill the owner will happily oblige. Mango Lassi $2.99 was good too! Could use some vibrant Indian colors on the walls ..saffron or orange paint, swath of cloth from the neighboring fabric stores to cover up the bars on the door, and tin art/photos on wall, and removal of the soap dispenser by the booth. Most other places marinate the chicken in enough spice to give it a red color, and then bake it so it has a warm temperature and is cooked. In contrast, Tandoori Oven really spices and flavors their Tandoori chicken up. Net of the superior marinating job, they also stick onions on top. Onions go with tandoori like Juliet goes with Romeo. * * * Tandoori Oven also has a long list of goat dishes. Samuel C's Prescription for Happy Living: If your restaurant has a lot of goat dishes, you are in a good place. You may want to revise that prescription if you personally are a goat. But for restaurant-loving humans, A lot of goat dishes on the menu is a good thing. It was very popular for take out, and a lot of folks from the neighbourhood came in and took food to good. The value for the money is great. $9 per vegetarian dish and $11+ for meat. We went as a family of four with two kids. Everything was served in a timely manner. What we ordered: - Vegetable Pakora. - wow! A must order if you like pakora. A healthy multi-bite size deep fired mix of veggies and chick peas. Compared to what we usually have in North Vancouver, the best pakora I've ever had. Our kids loved it too. - Beef Samosa - just ok. I'd rather go down the street to Sweet Novelties for their monster sized samosas. - Butter Chicken - loved how it was served and presented. Tasty and plenty of sauce for dipping naan and roti. - Dal Makhani - also excellent if you like Dal. Beans were fresher than what we usually have. - Chicken Tikka - not the usual chicken thighs we see, instead chunks of chicken cubes. Still tasty, I really liked it. There is a bit of heat with this dish, so be careful if you don't like the spice. Dinner comes with water bottles. Value is great, service was good. Ambiance is lacking as it's a very basic and somewhat older location - hence only four stars. DONT DRINK THE BOTTLED WATER! This place is predatory. They bring out water like any restaurant does, without asking you. But it bottled, I thought it was odd, it's a scam, they charge you. It's the kind of thing you're warned about when traveling, never expected to see it here. They don't tell you, the billed water quickly appears and disappears when they ring you up. The service is really bad, and the people are unfriendly. The ambiance is kids with no shoes having their feet on tables. Food was good but not so good I'd be willing to support a place with such predatory practices. Additionally the curry gave me significant bathroom issues later. Go somewhere better. read more

Nestled on Main and East 49th Avenue, the Tandoori Oven restaurant is located in the Punjabi Market, and is very accessible with the 49 and 3 buses passing through often. At first the store front was quaint, but its high rating had me so curious, I simply had to know... just how good is this establishment? So we went in and you know what, the manager greeted us warmly, albeit he was a bit busy (it was a surprisingly busy day especially considering the rough weather), and we took a seat. The manager even turned on the TV, to which we heard energetic Bollywood music, which was very amusing and entertaining. We ordered the vegetable samosa, lamb kabab, and chicken biryani. For the last two, we asked for the manager's suggestion and that's what he suggested. After a bit of waiting, the staff lady served us politely and quickly, and we got started with eating. The vegetable samosas, which contained corn and peas, were crispy and delicious. They were served with a shockingly green sauce, which was very refreshing and tasty, and spicy, thick red-brown sauce, which paired very well with the samosas, and a cooling yogurt sauce with carrot slivers, which was very refreshing after eating the spicy foods. I liberally applied the sauces to my samosas, naan, and kabab. The lamb kabab, which can be seen on the menu, was even better than it looked. And it looked pretty good to begin with. Not only was it juicy, spicy, saucy, and tasty, but the naan that it came with (there's also an option for rice, but I'd go for naan anytime) was perfectly buttered and aromatic that I combined the two for a naan kebab, topped with the yogurt sauce that came before. Between the chicken biryani and kebab, I really couldn't say which would win, but the chicken biryani speaks for itself. The long basmati rice was thoroughly marinated in the spicy spices, and the chicken meat was hot, tender, and tasty. (Don't eat it too fast, as you need to watch for bones, but that should be expected when eating chicken that's not highly processed.) There aren't any spicy levels for this dish, but I would say it's between intermediate to spicy, but not very spicy. So it's just right for my tastes. Afterwards we felt like dessert, so we asked for a suggestion, and we got kheer, which I would describe as a spiced rice pudding with some nut slivers. I haven't tried this dessert before but it had a good consistency and viscosity. It was creamy (possibly it did have cream in it), and it was perfect to wrap up the meal as it quelled the spiciness from the biryani. The taste surprised me at first, but it may have grown on me. It cost about $35 for us, including tips and taxes, so it was very affordable and filling for the price. While the food is great, and the staff are good, the only fault I can find with Tandoori Oven is that they are understaffed (hence the manager is very busy helping and doing everything), and the restaurant isn't glamourous and flashing, but instead is homey, simple, and tidy. So you can expect good food, without having to pay extra for an extravagant ambiance. Which is just perfect for me. Incidentally, the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family went to India for a week, but since we're only subprime, we went to Little India (the Punjabi Market) instead. I would say our experience at Tandoori Oven was just as good (if not better) than the PM's in India. Five stars for the food, service, and experience! read more

I live pretty close to Tandoori Oven, less than a 5 minute drive away, so I was glad to see that they were open relatively late. We were working late and felt like Indian food so went on Yelp and saw this place with great reviews and decided to give it a try. Your first impressions aren't going to be great. There's booth seating along the walls and just a lot of open space in the middle. The lighting and lack of music give it a pretty dreary ambiance, and you definitely get the sense that it was just pieced together from whatever business was here before. Service itself is pretty friendly albeit slow. I assume the gentleman that was working that night is the owner of Tandoori Oven and he was pretty attentive. They seemed to get a lot of takeout orders which might disrupt their workflow a bit. Our entrees took a fair bit of time to come out. We ordered the butter chicken and the tandoori chicken. Their butter chicken is good but perhaps a bit heavy on the tomato, the portion itself is not really a dinner sized portion IMO either. The tandoori chicken was nicely seasoned but a little overcooked. For a cheap take out experience, I would still recommend Tandoori Oven. It's not the best Indian food but they're open late, well priced, and have decent service. I would not come back for a dine in experience however. read more

this is such a hole in the wall place, but these types of places have fantastic food! as a pakistani myself, this is some of the best pakistani/indian food i've ever eaten. the naan was super soft, chicken tikka was moist and delicious (which is a feat bc chicken tikka breast can be quite dry), and the goat biryani was amazing! not to mention the CHAI. authentic doodh patti and some of the BEST chai i've ever had. if i was a local in vancouver i'd be coming here regularly. 10/10 would recommend. if you eat out for the dining experience, this isn't the place for you, but if flavor and freshness is what matters most, then this is golden read more
