I've eaten here a lot and it has always been really good. Tonight however was horrible. I asked for a salad with mixed greens and dressing on the side. I got a salad with a lot of romaine ends (you know the super crunchy white part), some very translucent pieces of lettuce and a few ok mixed greens. The dressing was mixed in as well. The customer service is terrible! The cashier doesn't change gloves when preparing foods. They will take your order then dig their hand into the lettuce to make a side salad. Not sure if they accept cash, I've only paid with a card. If they do accept cash, then this place is absolutely disgusting. The other staff preparing the entrees never change gloves they just put a little sanitizer on their gloves. The staff overall are really rude. Never smile, or say thank you, or apologize when they make a mistake. Also, the tri-tip is always cold. The bean soup was sour. Never going back. read more

Came in on Tuesday around 12:30 pm for lunch. It was very busy but was still able to get through the line and make my order very quickly! Was welcomed with a smile and was pleased with my service! We stopped here on the way from SF to Tahoe and were very impressed with the food. My husband and I each had a juicy piece of chicken with vegetables and mac and cheese. Very rude customer service . Went to pick up an order from here and the lady had a problem handing me my bag of food that was already done , sitting on a shelf behind the counter getting cold . She then ran to help the next customer in line who's food wasn't even bagged and there was already a person helping that customer ! She acted as if two employees needed to be on that one customer !! Then I ask the other girl since the rude one took over what she was doing . And she comes over and tells me I need to wait even though the other lady already handed me my order !!! Definitely one of the best restaurants in Davis. If you want the best, most flavorful sandwich (I highly recommend the tri-tip) in the county or even the state, get their classic or their BBQ sandwich! Same goes for their garlic fries. Every ingredient goes together beautifully, and while it may get messy, it's fun to savor it every time. The food, laidback staff and atmosphere, and convenient location between Safeway, dense student apartments, and a key Yolobus stop will always far outweigh the lack of hot drinks, the rather unassuming decor, and the (actually pretty dreadful at times) music. This Jack's is my family's favorite Jack's location, and is a huge hit every time we bring family or friends. I eat here with my husband as often as we can, and the service and food are always delicious. Brittany and Jamon are so kind and always make our trip to Jack's so nice - especially for our 3-year-old daughter. They have fantastic healthy options, including lots of veggie-heavy salads and sides. Most vegetarian options at other restaurants disappoint so when I don't want meat, I find SO much food that I love at this Jack's. Their create your own salads are delicious. I've tried the balsamic, ranch, plum and Sesame dressings and they're all delicious. Their seasonal specials tend to be delicious too - and offer lots of veggie options. My husband loves the Jack's Classic Chicken sandwich and the Bahn Mi. Both of us love their urban fries, but if you don't like spicy fries then their plain fries are outstanding. My daughter loves everything, but their mac and cheese is definitely tops. (About their mac - they do a great job keeping it cheesy and fresh - but one time I was in and it looked a little less cheesy than normal. Without my even commenting or requesting, the guy helping me got a fresh batch of it going for our order. Talk about thoughtfulness.) Their m&m cookies are great. It seriously pains me to write this - I'm actually very fond of the chain. However, the quality of the food here was a lot lower than anywhere else. I got the California Cheese Steak, which was was very fitting of its name. The steak was so dry. Seriously, swallowing it felt like a chore. Aside from that, my biggest issue was the price. You pay so much for so little. While the portions are filling, they're definitely not worth it. $8.50 for three chicken tenders? I'll pass. A "healthy" food place. Not a very cheap option. Food is sort of fresh. This place is quite similar to Pluto's. It has salads, sandwiches, and sides. The salad bar is nice but the dressings are a lot more heavy than some other restaurants. Their sides and bread have typically been sitting and aren't the most fresh available. It's always exciting when a new restaurant comes to Davis, especially in the culinary deprived North Davis scene! I came here with fellow Yelper Riki N.izzle mah fizzle, and we had a good time. I ordered the Rueben, which was one of the best I have ever had. The whole grain mustard gave a nice mouth feel and the sauerkraut, rye, and Russian dressing meshed perfectly into a great sandwich Riki N. ordered the Hawaiian Chicken sandwich, which did not have enough sauce. Come on, the best part of Pineapple-meat sandwich is the oozy Teriyaki pineapple sauce that it comes drizzled in! My other room mate got the Sante fe Chicken Salad, and it turned out to be way too sweet without enough "Santa Fe in it" Now for the Urban Fries. Upon smelling these, I had to have them. Like a lion hunting a gazelle, I honed in on these bad boys. However, I personally was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, they tasted great, but I have had better, tasting heart attack inducing fries before (El Burrito's steak fries) However, the over arching complaint is the price. Both the sandwiches cost 8 bucks and the salad cost $9.25. We all agreed that it was over priced, and all menu prices would be better set at costing at least a dollar less. Not for the food... this is for the service I got today. I actually quite like their salads, sandwiches, and especially their urban fries. I usually go in once every week or two, often on a Thursday or Friday after work, or on a Saturday for lunch. I tend to order the same thing - either an order of urban fries or a buffalo chicken salad. Well, I went in for lunch today. I noticed some of the staff were listening to me order. Once I had ordered one of my standbys, one of them said something like, "I knew it!" and gave someone else a high-five. Another staff member said something like, "Well, it had to be one of the two." They were laughing a lot and having a grand ol' time. That is not the kind of service I expect. I don't appreciate being made fun of. I had enough of that in grade school. I'm sure plenty of people would see it as no big deal, but I felt embarrassed and I almost left right then. But, I decided to eat my salad anyway. After I left, I called the store with the intention of asking to speak with a manager. There was no answer, and their phone does not have the option of leaving a message. That's when I decided to give them a review. They probably won't even notice, but I will also be speaking to a manager within the next day or two. Hit the road, Jack. Jack's is basically a less good, more expensive version of Pluto's in a mostly inconvenient locale. A couple of days ago, I got a tri-tip half-salad for $9.67. For that price, I got 6 toppings. Today I went to Pluto's and got the same size salad with Tri-tip. I got seven toppings, plus an extra premium topping (.50 cents) for $7.72. For my Jack's salad, I ordered the Plum vinaigrette, which was a mistake. I thought it would be a light fruity summer dressing, but it fact it was just chinese chicken salad dressing. The tri-tip was TASTELESS. Absolutely no flavor. I have no reason to ever return there. I can't imagine they will last long in Davis. There just aren't enough people in town to support mediocrity. Stick with Plutos, and if you really have a hankering for great Tri-Tip, pick up a whole one from Buckhorn at the Farmer's Market on Wednesday nights. For right around $30.00 you get the whole roast and it is DIVINE. read more

If I could I would give this negative stars.... I previously ate at and reviewed the JUE in Roseville at the Fountains. It was one of my least favorite places to eat. I never wanted to try JUE again. I didn't have a choice, the boss took us for a team meeting here and she was buying us lunch. I had hopes my experience would be different. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. Staff at JUE use their unprotected/ungloved hands to cut meat and prepare food. It is just nasty, why can't you put on some gloves so I'm not eating whatever crude has accumulated under your fingernails. The food had ZERO flavor. I ordered the California Cheesesteak sandwich with fries. Let me tell you, that sandwich was NOTHING like a cheesesteak sandwich. What would you expect, some melted cheese? No, it was a slab of cheese, not even warm. There was no dressing on the sandwich so it was dry and really hard to swallow. The meat had a small amount of flavor, but even salt would have helped. The only flavorful thing on that sandwich was the cooked vegetables. The fries were good. I never ever want to eat there or any other JUE again. This place sucks. read more

I'll reserve the 4-star in the event that this neat spot fixes a few things up in my future visits. Came here with fellow Yelper Abe M. and his roommate. We were greeted kindly by the store owner who helped us navigate the menu. Food came out fast, and it was all pretty good. Abe said his reuben was quite possibly the best he's ever had. My Hawaiian Chicken Sandwich was more accurately a grilled chicken sandwich. It had some teriyaki and pineapple, but not much. It so fundamentally lacked in the strong and savory teriyaki and grilled pineapple flavors since they were so modestly dispersed throughout the sandwich. I didn't even go through a whole napkin. I know. Abe's roommate Jason said his Santa Fe Chicken Salad was good, but ultimately too sweet - he said they seemed to be using their own dressing rather than the standard for a Santa Fe, and that pushed it a little over the top in the sweetness department. Urban fries were tasty, but heavy and not really as interesting as it could've been. I was picturing some animal fries/chili fries level thing, but it was just normal fries in bleu cheese with chili flakes. Overall, we felt the food was a little pricey for what it was, but it's still a good spot. The tri-tip was handed to me at the cash register immediately after I paid and was cooler than room temperature. The meat was tough and dry. The mac n cheese tasted bland and not cheesey. My family and I received the worst service I've ever encountered. Your staff member by the name of Britney was not only rude to me but to my entire family including my young daughter. She ignored my daughter as she tried requesting bbq sauce for her chicken strips that were received 10 minutes after the rest of us received our food. I thought they forgot about the strips and as my husband was going to walk to the register she comes with the strips and throws them on the table and says "they are hot". Cafeteria-style dining at sit-down dining prices. I just got a veggie sandwich and fries to go (no drink) and my order was $13. I don't know anyone who wouldn't think that's steep for a quick lunch. Portions are decent, and the urban fries are delicious, but I don't feel like I got what I paid for. I always come here with my friends and they never disappoint me. The service is fast and the food is great. I usually get a sandwich from here. Out of the couple of ones that I have tried, my favorite would have to be the Turkey Berry. The cranberry sauce compliments the turkey so well. The bread and sauce gives the sandwich a nice tang and sweetness. It is also not overwhelming like other sandwiches. If I had to sum up the sandwich in 2 words, I would say thanksgiving dinner. This restaurant is perfect for you, your friends and your family. Just as an okay movie you would see on a date, Jack's is the movie you wouldn't talk about after you watched it, as no particular detail of your experience will stand out to you or your date later. Now, this is not to say that Jack's lacks an attention to detail. It almost exclusively caters to the comfort of its patrons with comfortable food and comfortable eating. I am not a tall person and the height of the booths are perfect for me and my girlfriend, without feeling as if my elbows are pointing upwards towards the table. Meat was cooked properly. Temperature of my sandwich was fine. Palatable? Certainly. Filling? Yes. But overall, it was just... just... okay. Nothing memorable. Nothing bold, or new, or exciting. Nothing special. After all we'd read about generous portion sizes, my husband and I were both disappointed. For the price, we expected at least a 6-inch sandwich piled high with meat, but that was not the case. Our sandwiches were the size snd shape of an ordinary hamburger. The garlic fries were fine, although a little greasier than I would've liked. Tasted like Cattlemens. On the plus side, service was fast and friendly. The place was clean. Location was easily accessible. And probably most importantly, our three kids thought their chicken strips & fries (reasonably priced at $4.95 each) were better than most other places they've tried. Second time here and still good! Tonight I got the spicy buffalo chicken salad. It wasn't bad, wished it had more chicken in it. It just had two small strips of chicken. The chicken tasted good. In the salad there were a variety of stuff like apples, walnuts, and a bunch of other stuff I don't remember haha. I did felt like the dressing was too much. Maybe next time I'll ask for dressing on the side. Their choice of greens were romaine lettuce. I also shared a plate of Jack's Urban fries! I love these fries!! If you come to Jack's, you just gotta get the fries!! It's hard to not eat the whole plate yourself. Service- it was very crowded tonight, but the line moved fast. There are a bunch of workers making salads and sandwiches so you don't have to wait too long before your turn. The workers are all very nice even thought it was really hectic taking orders and running around to get stuff. A+ for keeping calm and being patient with customers!! I would come back again if I'm in the area or if a friend wants to eat here. I think I prefer plutos for salad though. I like that plutos you can choose your type of greens and I believe that plutos is a much larger portion of salad than Jack's. Jack's Urban Eats has a similar concept with Pluto's, in terms of having a varied salad selection and sandwiches. The advantage of Jack's, is that it resides in the northern part of Davis; whereas, Pluto's is in the southern part of Davis. So for those who are in North Davis that are craving salads or sandwiches, Jack's is a good alternative. The staff is accommodating and are helpful in explaining the various items on their menu. Compared to Pluto's, the way the staff is positioned to make their salads and sandwiches is not structured as well, which occasionally causes a delay in getting your food. However, when you get your food, the time for the wait is usually forgotten; as the food is good. Although most of their menu items have various salads and sandwiches, their signature Jack's Urban Fries is a definite must order. Their crispy fries are topped with a bleu cheese and chili oil aioli. It is delicious and is very creative. The kick of the chili oil is mellowed out with the creamy bleu cheese. The bleu cheese is also just right and is not an overpowering bleu cheese. read more

In general, I'm a fan of Jack's Urban Eats, but this location has always been a hit or miss for me. Their selection of meats, salads, and sandwiches are great. Buffalo chicken and the BBQ chicken sandwiches are my definite to-go choices here. Garlic fries and urban fries are bomb! JUE has less garlic on their fries compared to Pluto's so a lot of people may like it more (pluto's are still my fave though). Cleanliness is top-notch here so far. Bathrooms are well-managed. There's plenty of seating indoors and outside in the patio area. Great place to grab a bite with family and to take your pets along! Aside from everything, the reason why this place can be a total miss for me sometimes is the customer service. They have a lot of workers so it varies each visit, but there's always a mistake with my order. During my last visit, I ordered 2 sandwiches and a family size garlic fries to-go on a Saturday right after lunch time....So not very busy. Not only did they give me a wrong sandwich and tried to send me off (fortunately I checked before leaving), they still messed up the order by leaving certain ingredients that I had asked them to exclude. So the to-go order ended up taking much longer than necessary and we still didn't get exactly what we wanted. There were about 3 workers there so maybe they were off their game, but stuff like this happens at the Davis location too much to ignore. It's my first trip here and not a good first impression. I stood at the front door and had no idea what to do. Four employees made direct eye contact with me and chose to ignore me. Including the cashier and waiter/host type person. After someone finally explained to me how to order, I got mine in. I ordered the BBQ tri tip sandwich. I really don't like fries or potatoes so I asked about other options. I was told "there's some veggies and soup down there". He said other things but honestly, I couldn't hear him. I went down to the cashier and ordered the asparagus. It was supposed to have a lemon vinaigrette on it. I received that side before my main dish. Apparently I was expected to either eat it immediately without my main course or let it get cold while waiting. Didn't matter though, the asparagus was cold anyways and very bland. After dumping salt and pepper on it, it became somewhat edible. I will say though, the tri tip sandwich was excellent. It's the only reason for the 3 stars. The roll they used was very complimentary to the meat and the BBQ sauce was not overly sweet. Unfortunately, due to the poor service I will probably not be back. If you're in Davis on the weekend and looking for a place to eat that is not super crowded, one of the MarketPlace restaurants will be a good choice. When we're in this part of town, usually Dos is the first option, but this time we wanted something a bit different so Jacks was what was for lunch on a Saturday. With plenty of seating inside and a small patio outside the chances are you won't be waiting long for food, even on a busy day. In a way Jacks is like any of the newer fast-casual restaurants as there is no traditional table service and everything is ordered at the counter. As far as the options they are somewhat limited: sandwiches, salads, carved meats, and some sides. That's it. For what Jacks offers it's all OK. We shared a family portion of Urban Fries, I had a California Cheese Steak sandwich, wife ordered Veggie Sandwich, and kids had chicken strips and some carved tri-tip. While nothing was outstanding or particularly memorable, nothing was bad either. Consensus was that Jacks is a bit overpriced for what you get though. Sandwiches are all À la carte so no side.While the ciabatta rolls were very soft, the steak in my Cali Cheese Steak had a lot of gristle and could use trimming before being put on the grill. Veggie sandwich was fresh but for $8 it should be a bit more. The kids enjoyed their meals though so it was all good. They also have no beer on tap but there are about 10 varieties of bottles to choose from. Again, at $4 for 12 oz bottle maybe slightly overpriced, considering you order at the counter and take your beer to the table. I would give Davis Jacks a 4 star rating if there wasn't for one detail. The men's room was out of soap. And because I had a 4 year old with me I visited the restroom more than once in about a bit more then an hour that we stayed at Jacks. No soap-not cool. And I don't think the customer should warn staff they are out of soap. Someone should be checking on it. We made do with stealing some from the girls room but Jacks should do better. So while Jacks was a welcome change, it still looks like when at Marketplace, Dos is the place to go. read more

This relatively new place serves pretty standard American food: sandwiches, fries, meats. It's basically a less healthy version of Pluto's. I tried the chicken breast, mac n' cheese, and sweet potato fries. The chicken was nicely seasoned and moist but the amount of meat was tiny and definitely not worth $5-6.
