Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice / 秘制台式卤肉饭
Ester L.

Got the braised pork rice and tiramisu and the food is seriously good. Tiramisu came right away and I did too bc it's so high quality, real thick mascarpone and the bottom was well soaked with coffee, overall flavor was really good. $9 is a crazy price but it was very good tiramisu. Workers are very gracious and kind and I love hearing their Taiwanese mandarin. My pork rice came after 10 minutes and the portion was good for the price. Lots of rice and pork fat which was good! Taiwanese cabbage was too tough and bland for me, and I didn't like the sour veggies on the side. The egg yolk in the braised egg was just slightly uncooked which was great. The flavors were overall well-balanced and tasty. Ambiance is very chill, a little dark but clean and welcoming. Cute posters inside and just a nice environment. Highly recommend to try at least once, especially for the tiramisu!

The purple rice yogurt was so small for $9!!! The price and quality is just not matching. Yogurt was so sweet and purple rice was like risotto's texture

The food was amazing if you're looking for some delicious comfort authentic Chinese food! The service was great and the vibe and ambience of the restaurants is nice and comfortable!

Really yummy food! We got the minced pork with chicken katsu and pork belly. Good portion size but the egg was a bit cold, maybe because we went closer to closing time. Overall, service was 10/10 food came out super fast. Would come back.

Cute clean little spot in Davis although the interior is a bit dated that really doesn't matter much to me! Their service was quick and to the point and I wonder if that is why it only has about 3.7 stars on Yelp? Cause heres the thing their food and their desserts are actually pretty bomb and well priced, I got their juicy chicken cutlets w/ braised pork over rice and although I've had better, I've only exclusively had better in the bay area which is far and often times getting the same dish in the bay costs noticably more. Oh and something interesting they do is their tea eggs are actually somewhat jammy and not chalky like in many Chinese or Taiwanese spots. Their tiramisu was a surprise, honestly it would've been perfect if it was had maybe a quarter shot more of coffee, it is not too sweet and has a strong flavor, there were just some drier bits is all. I got their roasted sencha tea latte too, nice and bitter and at 50% sweet this would probably be equivalent to 25% sweet at other places, it was good for me since I honestly don't like my teas very sweet! Overall this place is a 4.5/5 - but if you factor in the price for the taste and quantity, especially for some of the college kids around here, it's a really good deal! P.s. bonus points their messages on their signage are pretty funny

I like the servers and the ambiance is younger and bright, but it can take a while to get food. This type of Chinese food isn't as common in Davis so it's more busy, but if you're not into this, not worth coming back. More a place for snacks, drinks, or maybe rice plates than a meal or soup. Spicy soup and braised beef had too much of an earthy flavor, would not get these again.

Combination Veggie Noodle Miso Soup

I had lunch at Honey D on a Thursday with a friend. Everyone there, dining and working, were two generations younger than us. I was the only Caucasian in the restaurant. I took both observations that the food would be good and a great value. Right on both counts. I ordered the Combination Veggie Noodle Miso Soup. It was delicious, loaded with an abundance of ingredients; at least three types of mushrooms, a quail egg, tofu, peanuts, soe chopped pickle, lettuce or cabbage, and lots of noodles in the broth. The serving size was large and I have enough left over for two more meals. The restaurant is relatively small. One orders at the counter towards the back. The food is brought to your table. There are several tables for two, a couple of tables for four, and a short counter seating area by the window.

I stopped in to Honey D's after a evening of drinking and wants something fast yet delicious to eat. My friend recommend Honey D's! We walking in a greeted by the owner a friendly young man. We asked for recommendations as we are open to try whatever on the menu. He recommended different items from the menu and I we for it, as we were hangry. He brought out dumplings a noodle dish chicken and desserts and boba drinks. While waiting the restaurant is cozy and quiet it's not too big inside. The food is absolutely delicious the pork and chive dumping were amazing the soup dumpling were on point. The noodle dish which I can't remember was so good and he brought out a durian dessert dish

Tiramisu-super yummy, not too sweet!

My bf and I were looking for a place to buy something just to use a restroom and this was the only place we could find (SMH davis you need to do better) . Honestly im glad we did- we got the pork chicken cutlet bowl and the black tea latte with crema 50 percent sweet as well as the tiramisu. While the tiramisu was super good, the highlight was the savory dish . I like that their tea egg also had a bit of a yolkier middle. Im a saucy girl , but I honestly didn't need any for this dish as it was packed with so much flavor already and the rice was nicely soaked in the flavorful juiciness of the meat. This is also one of the few places here that is affordable (AND HAS A RESTROOM lol)

I was starving after having woken up early to attend the Candy Cane Dog Show Cluster in Woodland and wanted something comforting for lunch. Honey D Cafe caught my eye as I've had this establishment saved to my list for the longest time and that day I was not in the mood for pho. I wanted to stay nearby as I had groups later in the afternoon. Thankfully Davis is but a stone's throw away from Woodland. Parking in Davis on the weekends is always a nightmare, but I like to park in the parking garage by the cinema and just walk to my destination. I quickly found a spot at the parking garage and headed to Honey D Cafe. I was honestly surprised by how tiny the restaurant was. You order and pay up front before taking a seat. I went with the house special noodle soup and added wood ear fungus (wood ear is one of my favorite fungi). The tables were tiny and the chairs were not the most comfortable. I decided to shrug it off as I was starving, but made a mental note to include that in this review. The workers were not very friendly, and I noticed that they were extremely busy with to-go orders (DoorDash, Hungry Panda, etc). Bags upon bags of food started to accumulate on the pickup counter as I waited for my food. My noodle soup finally arrived in a hot metal bowl, which was nice to keep the soup piping hot. I was pleased with the amount of meat, veggies, and other ingredients in my bowl, especially since with tax and tip my total for lunch amounted to $23. For the extra $1.50 I paid for my wood ear, I did get a good amount of fungus too. But this is definitely not a restaurant I'd visit weekly. The broth was delicious and soothing, and all the ingredients worked well together to create a cohesive dish. The noodles were chewy and bouncy. I was very full after and while this bowl was on the pricier side, I was satisfied with my first experience at Honey D. However, I will say that the house special noodle soup reminds me of crossing-the-bridge noodle soup and honestly is most likely Honey D's rendition of that dish. Usually the ingredients are served separately and you add them to the boiling hot broth yourself once your bowl arrives to your table, but in this case all the ingredients were already present in the broth. I've had the most delicious crossing-the-bridge noodle soup in San Jose so I know what to expect. Honey D's was fine for a quick fix, but is not traditional (and I'm not saying to directly compare their food to the actual dish). It was just something that made me wonder the more I picked apart the ingredients in my bowl (such as the peanuts, quail eggs, etc). Regardless, I was satisfied with my meal and would like to return in the near future to try some other dishes that Honey D Cafe has to offer!

Spicy Beef Noodle Soup ($15.95)
Rachel L.

Came here because my friend and I were craving a noodle soup! We saw they had a spicy beef noodle soup here and that's exactly what we got. It's definitely nothing like the taiwanese beef noodles soup. It's a lot spicier, they use rice noodles, and the cuts of beef are different. It was still tasty but definitely seemed heavier on the salt. Couldn't taste the beefiness of the broth as much as I'd like. It was a decent size for $16 and we were extremely full afterwards. You order up at the cashier and then seat yourself. wasn't really anything great about the service. The place is small and but cute. Might be hard to find a table when it's busy.

Nice nano tank!
David L.

The beef noodle soup looks very different. The noodles are not cut or torn. And there's peanuts? Oh well. It taste great still! Unless you are allergic to nuts... and they separate the broth from the rest of the noodles and stuff. That's next level bro! Also not sure why there is quail egg in the beef noodle soup. But it's all good! the chicken cutlet is juicy as advertised! And the braised pork was actually ground pork... but still has that heart attack flavor! Nice!! And the egg is not bad. Not great but could be worst. It's a bit pricey... but all in all, it's legit. Will def go back!! Service is fast. Fish tank still looks great!! Many places to sit. Including next door. Awesome A-

I wanted to try their boba for sure since all of the reviews mentioned how divine it is. And I was happily surprised with the quality of their boba so late into the night. The texture was still very soft and chewy, not too sweet, and the portion of the boba was generous!! The black milk tea was strong and silky, I changed the sweetness to 75% and it was perfect. The ambiance is dark, dimly lit, lots of pandas (paintings and decor) everywhere. It was really quiet when I visited, I saw a couple students working on homework. We were both pretty hungry afterwards and weren't sure what places were open, or what we wanted to eat. We decided to drive around downtown Davis just to get a sense of what was open, and saw that Tasty Kitchen was bustling. We had never eaten there before, but as it was pretty much our only option besides fast food (which I did not want), we decided to try them out and have a good Thanksgiving dinner. I took a quick browse at their Yelp reviews before heading in, and the food looked pretty good, so I figured why not. Since we had come pretty much on a whim (I usually heavily research restaurants before trying new places), we weren't quite sure what to order, but I knew I wanted some carbs. We wanted to share a fried rice, so we chose the dried scallop and egg white fried rice. My husband was eyeing the beef stew lo mein, and I was eager to try the beef chow fun with black bean sauce. We were seated quickly and given hot tea to enjoy. It had been a cold day, so the tea was very welcome. We placed our order and then sat back to people watch while we waited. There were a few large groups dining in, but while watching the staff, they all worked efficiently, and food was constantly coming out of the kitchen. Delivery drivers and those who called in for takeout were also coming and going. We waited a while for our food, but it was also because everyone seemed to have ordered at the same time for the dinner rush (and we had come around 17:45 too). I guess everyone was feeling like an early Thanksgiving dinner. We were honestly amazed by the huge portion sizes when our dishes arrived to our table. Everything was reasonably priced as well, and we knew we would have plenty of leftovers. The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was delightfully saucy, and the noodles still had a nice wok hay. The beef was extremely velvety and tender. My husband enjoyed his beef stew lo mein. The egg noodles were perfectly bouncy, and the braised beef was tender. The dried scallop egg white fried rice was pretty good as well. I had hoped for a bit more wok hay and scallop flavor, but it was a little under seasoned. I would say it was a nice palette cleanser if you will, and at least the rice was nice and fluffy. I would have to say that the food here is comforting and hearty, but it didn't have as much depth of flavor as I would have liked. However, you really get your money's worth when you come here. It was $49 for everything before tip, and we had so many leftovers to take home. Our waiter even took our plates and packaged them to go for us, so that was a nice touch. I'm used to packaging my own leftovers these days. There's something for everyone at this restaurant, and I would like to be back to try some of their other dishes. Another table across from us ordered the Mongolian beef, which came on a sizzling platter, and that smelled so good. That will definitely be a contender next time we visit. I'm definitely thankful that Tasty Kitchen was open on Thanksgiving, and will keep this restaurant in our rotation for a holiday meal.

My husband and I came here after lunch and ordered two sauce, fried rice, a spicy, braised beef dish, and gai lan (Chinese broccoli). I was so excited to eat the fried rice and it tasted exactly like what I imagined it to taste like. I don't typically like really starchy, thick sauces, but that was exactly what I was looking for. I don't know, it's not like it's anything super special or a crazy amazing delicious dish, it's just a nostalgic taste that I really missed and used to only be able to get at the old tea house in Davis over a decade ago. The spicy braised beef, unfortunately was the kind of spicy. I didn't want it to be, so if you don't like tongue, numbing spicy, this is not the dish for you. That being said, the rest of the dish was good, I found the meat to be quite tender And well seasoned, when I could taste beyond numbness, lol. Vegetables are vegetables, really not more to say about that. I'll definitely come back for the fried rice and to try other clay pot dishes, which they have a lot of variety of. Also, it seems like a lot of people really enjoy their duck, so I'll be make sure to order that next time. In terms of ambience or service, it is a Chinese restaurant. You get what you get, and that is a person who brings your food out. Just kidding (kind of) I'm not expecting five star restaurant levels of service at this price point. Plates and cups were clean, the server came when I raised my hand, idk I don't really need more than that! Also, as a Vietnamese person who always has cash on her, I love when I get a discount (5%) for using cash.

I went from a thin top to a medium weight sweater. We arrived in Davis I grabbed my jacket to pair with my sweater. Today was a day spent exploring Davis to see the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts (CCACA). What a great Conference. We come each year for this Conference and explore Davis every time we are here. After exploring the first building of the show it was coming on time to eat. We looked around the current shopping center and my husband didn't see anything he was craving. He said we'll go more into town and look for a noodle place. He said he remembered one from our last visit, down one of the alleys. Walking up the street we saw a couple of advertisements. A sandwich board was on the sidewalk for Davis Noodle CIty, the exact place we were looking for. The little Noodle Shop in the alley. We weaved through the other businesses, past the dumpling restaurant, past the outdoor seating and to the front door of the Davis Noodle City Restaurant. The out door seating looked really welcoming, but it was chilly out so we opted for eating inside with the other table that was occupied. There were 3 parties eating outside when we arrived. When we walked inside we were greeted and told to take any table. We choose a table in the corner. The menus were under the glass table top, keeping it clean and easy to read. Each place setting had its own copy of the menu. After looking at the menu, remembering what was offered on the sandwich board in front, and cross referencing it with Yelp Reviews we started ordering. We opted for the Five Spice Beef Noodles, and I asked if that was a good option and she said it was their top seller. The Yelp Reviews were only ok for that dish, but I took our chances. The second dish we ordered was the Dan Dan Noodles She tried to upscale us to the one with vegetables, but that dish was a cold dish so we when for the standard Dan Dan Noodles. Both dishes came out quickly. The Dan Dan noodles were not spicy as I anticipated, which was good, I wasn't really looking for spicy. I liked the flavor and realized that if you mixed it up there is a sauce on the bottom that is really tasty. Dan Dan Noodles ($8.25 a steal) is a solid dish and I highly reccomend it. It's a great bowlful of noodles. If you are hopping for other ingredients you are out of luck, it's 100% noodles with a sprinkling of peanuts on top and a sauce on the bottom. The Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup ($12.75)was as described in the reviews. It comes with American Broccoli and carrots. The beef is so good it melts in your mouth. The broth is minimal and lacked flavor. I'd think that it's advertised as Five Spice that it would have more flavor. I don't reccomend it if you are looking for a strong flavor. If you are looking for great meat, that melts in your mouth, but is also a little fatty then you have the perfect dish. Both dishes came with fresh noodles, none of those dried and rehydrated noodles that some places serve. The noodles on both dishes were different and pleasant. I highly reccomend their fresh noodles. Customer service was good. She came to check up on us and was pleasant. Parking is street parking. And they have a bathroom on site that is clean and well stocked.

Unfortunately, this place has both bad service and food is not great. 2 stars for the price. Food (3/10) - I don't know how to describe it outside of the fact that it's just bland. I got the "Marco Polo noodles" which is just Chinese jia jiang mien. Let's start with the positives. I liked the noodle texture; it had a nice spring and were thick for a decent chew. Now, onto the bad. You could just tell that the noodles would be bland just by a look and smell. The smell of the bowl wasn't one of fragrant stir-fried pork but it actually smelled like starchy water. The sauce was super watery and had no flavor and I don't think there was even ground pork in the noodles. From what I could tell, it was some diced up mushroom and then black bean paste, without black bean flavor might I add. I had to add a GENEROUS amount of soy sauce and chili oil to make it taste decent. Honestly, I'd say it's pretty hard to mess up this dish as a whole and there's a lot of leeway on flavor but I have not tasted something that bland in a while. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the thai tea. This thing was so sweet that it was borderline undrinkable. I had to wait for the ice to melt in the drink before it was bearable and even then, it still left this residual sticky taste in my mouth. Also it's 4 dollars for canned thai tea; she grabbed it out the fridge. The only sort of saving grace of this restaurant is that it's relatively cheap. $12.50 for a good portion of noodles might convince me to go back(?) VERY BIG maybe though. I might want to try their soup noodles. Service (5/10) - It didn't really seem like she wanted me to be there. She kind of just sat behind the counter on her phone with an Airpod in the whole time. She was just on her phone the whole time and overall inattentive. When she was, she was just asking if I was ready to order (twice in the span of under 3-ish minutes). Ambiance (6/10) - Eh. It was just kinda weird. The lighting was dingy. Also didn't like how they left dirty tables around (clearly looked like they had been there for a while). Overall, probably wouldn't visit again. Might give it a second chance but food for price was pretty good. Unfortunately, bad food for good price is a no-go for me.

Honestly, that was on me, and I think if I adjusted the spice level, it would have been really good. I also ordered the mango sticky rice, which I was excited about because I have had it at many different places. Unfortunately, the mango was not very sweet, and when I mentioned that something felt off, the response I got made me feel a bit dismissed, like I did not understand the dish. That part of the experience was frustrating. In general, the service was not the kindest during that visit, which affected my overall impression. That being said, the food itself has good flavor, and ordering to go might be a better option if you want to avoid that kind of interaction. It has been a few months since I have been back, so I cannot say if the staff or experience has improved.
