Back again to grab something to go. Ordered the salted fish & chicken fried rice, Pork belly fried rice & spam fried rice. The salted fish & chicken were good but I'm not sure where the salted fish was or if there's supposed to be pieces of fish because I didn't see any or maybe it's super finely chopped but chicken was tasty. It was busy but didn't wait too long to receive my order. Staff were friendly

Quick service, easy parking, economical for decent food. I tried the green beans with chicken. The beans were served blistered and a bit too oily for my liking, lots of onions which I don't care for, and added chicken for my protein. It comes with a large portion of rice and fresh broccoli. We also tried pork lumpia on the daily special menu - 6 for $6 - very flavorful, tightly wrapped and served with a sweet dipping sauce. My dining partner ordered honey walnut shrimp. It was a generous portion of fried shrimp but did not include walnuts. They added them in when we brought the error to their attention. If you're looking for inexpensive filling Chinese food, I would recommend this place. They also serve boba tea and there were lots of students inside the sparse interior dining area.

This is the spot to come for cheap food, massive portions and quick service. This place has always been a staple for end of the month eats when my pay check is slim but I still want good food and a place to study. Expect a usually steady stream of people and students coming in and out and a no fuss no frills dinning experience that will leave your fill and happy without draining the bank account.

Very quick and kind service with a clean interior. Soft Scrambled Egg Noddle Plate w/ Shrimp - 8/10 They actually got my order wrong, I ordered it with rice, but that's okay. I really enjoyed the contrast between the soft inner noodle and the crunch outside. The only complaint I have is how oily it was. Aside from this, very good amount of shrimp, tasty egg, and nice spring onion.

Revisited Open Rice Kitchen recently and overall, it was a decent experience. The atmosphere is casual with plenty of open seating, which makes it easy to find a spot even during busier hours. We ordered at the counter, and the boba drinks came out pretty quickly. I had the milk tea, and you can definitely taste the powder in it. It wasn't the smoothest, but given how affordable the drinks and food are, it's hard to complain too much. Our food was also served fairly fast, but there was an issue with my friend's order. It was incorrect a couple of times, so she ended up getting her meal much later than the rest of us; hence, why I took off a star. And I also took off a star since the food was inconsistent across the dishes my friends and I ordered. That was a bit frustrating and definitely something that took away from the experience. That said, Open Rice Kitchen is the kind of place you go to when you're looking for cheap Asian food. It's not perfect, but the low prices help make up for some of the flaws. If you're in the area and want a quick meal, it's a solid option.

I absolutely enjoyed eating here. I ordered the pork belly fried rice while my cousin ordered the loco moco. We also ordered some drinks too. We got their jasmine milk tea and lychee black tea. Very budget friendly and delicious. I would definitely want to come back again !!

One of my favorite restaurants in Davis! They've kept their prices affordable for years and offer such great food. I know not everything on their menu is perfect, but I've always loved pan-fried noodles with the soft scrambled egg, their milk teas, and any of their chicken wings (although Thai chili is the best one). Whenever I need a pick-me-up meal, I come here for the pan-fried noodles I love so much. With my most recent visit, I ordered my usual pan-fried noodles with chicken and Thai chili chicken wings, while my husband ordered the classic fried rice with beef. You already know that I loved my order, although the noodles were a little bit more soggy on top than usual but still perfectly pan-fried on the bottom. My husband didn't enjoy his fried rice that much, but if it was me I would have either ordered their kimchi fried rice or pork belly fried rice instead. Definitely order the Nutella wontons. You will not be disappointed. Can't wait for next time! Maybe I'll try something new for an entree finally. Maybe not.

WOW! I regret not knowing about this place until now. Unbeatable prices!! I love that this place makes delicious food with generous portions at affordable prices. Shoutout to the owner for not increasing prices like every other business and making a budget friendly spot in town for Davis students! My first encounter at Open Rice Kitchen was very welcoming and friendly. I walked up to the register as the first customer and the man standing there was all ready to answer any questions I had. He told me the most popular items under each category and have great recommendations. Some included: beef chow fun (best eaten right away), spam fried rice, pork belly fried rice, orange chicken, and potstickers to name a few. The udon dishes caught my eye since I love udon. I got the black pepper udon with BBQ pork and it tasted exactly how I imagined. You taste the black pepper flavor that's prominent in the dish and I love the addition of onions and bell peppers. I will continue to support this business while in Davis. If you are craving Asian-inspired dishes then look no further!

STOP sleeping on this place ASAP. Everything is cooked fresh, comes out hot, and is packed with insane flavor. The soup is PIPING HOT every time--like soul-warming, clears-your-sinuses hot. Drinks never miss, and the boba is easily some of the best in town. Service is lightning fast and effortless every single time. It's a cozy, low-key spot that's always buzzing with customers for a reason. AND THE RICE?? Hands down the best thing on the menu--absolutely elite, main-character energy. Do NOT skip it. The sauces are ridiculously good, especially the Thai chili--sweet, spicy, addictive, put-it-on-everything yummy! Portions are MASSIVE, prices are unbeatable (nothing over $10!), and the value is unreal. If you're on the fence, this is your sign--order the rice and thank me later.

In a college town like Davis, establishments like Open Rice Kitchen are a MUST for any college student. Decently sized portions, a great quality to price ratio, and a relatively clean establishment with friendly staff.

Some of the best value meals you can get in Davis for sure. They're known for being affordable and filling and both of those they are indeed! The food is not top tier but you should know that coming here. You don't eat top ramen for the quality lol. Don't get me wrong though, the food isn't bad at all. Enjoyed it! Ran me about $15 for both dishes and I was left with a bunch to take home. They also have boba for $2.50 + daily specials, but didn't get those today. Note: they kind of take a while to get your food out. Place gets busy and it took maybe 20+ minutes for our food to get to us. Can't tell you if this varies based on the time of day.

We were both pretty hungry afterwards and weren't sure what places were open, or what we wanted to eat. We decided to drive around downtown Davis just to get a sense of what was open, and saw that Tasty Kitchen was bustling. We had never eaten there before, but as it was pretty much our only option besides fast food (which I did not want), we decided to try them out and have a good Thanksgiving dinner. I took a quick browse at their Yelp reviews before heading in, and the food looked pretty good, so I figured why not. Since we had come pretty much on a whim (I usually heavily research restaurants before trying new places), we weren't quite sure what to order, but I knew I wanted some carbs. We wanted to share a fried rice, so we chose the dried scallop and egg white fried rice. My husband was eyeing the beef stew lo mein, and I was eager to try the beef chow fun with black bean sauce. We were seated quickly and given hot tea to enjoy. It had been a cold day, so the tea was very welcome. We placed our order and then sat back to people watch while we waited. There were a few large groups dining in, but while watching the staff, they all worked efficiently, and food was constantly coming out of the kitchen. Delivery drivers and those who called in for takeout were also coming and going. We waited a while for our food, but it was also because everyone seemed to have ordered at the same time for the dinner rush (and we had come around 17:45 too). I guess everyone was feeling like an early Thanksgiving dinner. We were honestly amazed by the huge portion sizes when our dishes arrived to our table. Everything was reasonably priced as well, and we knew we would have plenty of leftovers. The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was delightfully saucy, and the noodles still had a nice wok hay. The beef was extremely velvety and tender. My husband enjoyed his beef stew lo mein. The egg noodles were perfectly bouncy, and the braised beef was tender. The dried scallop egg white fried rice was pretty good as well. I had hoped for a bit more wok hay and scallop flavor, but it was a little under seasoned. I would say it was a nice palette cleanser if you will, and at least the rice was nice and fluffy. I would have to say that the food here is comforting and hearty, but it didn't have as much depth of flavor as I would have liked. However, you really get your money's worth when you come here. It was $49 for everything before tip, and we had so many leftovers to take home. Our waiter even took our plates and packaged them to go for us, so that was a nice touch. I'm used to packaging my own leftovers these days. There's something for everyone at this restaurant, and I would like to be back to try some of their other dishes. Another table across from us ordered the Mongolian beef, which came on a sizzling platter, and that smelled so good. That will definitely be a contender next time we visit. I'm definitely thankful that Tasty Kitchen was open on Thanksgiving, and will keep this restaurant in our rotation for a holiday meal.

My husband and I came here after lunch and ordered two sauce, fried rice, a spicy, braised beef dish, and gai lan (Chinese broccoli). I was so excited to eat the fried rice and it tasted exactly like what I imagined it to taste like. I don't typically like really starchy, thick sauces, but that was exactly what I was looking for. I don't know, it's not like it's anything super special or a crazy amazing delicious dish, it's just a nostalgic taste that I really missed and used to only be able to get at the old tea house in Davis over a decade ago. The spicy braised beef, unfortunately was the kind of spicy. I didn't want it to be, so if you don't like tongue, numbing spicy, this is not the dish for you. That being said, the rest of the dish was good, I found the meat to be quite tender And well seasoned, when I could taste beyond numbness, lol. Vegetables are vegetables, really not more to say about that. I'll definitely come back for the fried rice and to try other clay pot dishes, which they have a lot of variety of. Also, it seems like a lot of people really enjoy their duck, so I'll be make sure to order that next time. In terms of ambience or service, it is a Chinese restaurant. You get what you get, and that is a person who brings your food out. Just kidding (kind of) I'm not expecting five star restaurant levels of service at this price point. Plates and cups were clean, the server came when I raised my hand, idk I don't really need more than that! Also, as a Vietnamese person who always has cash on her, I love when I get a discount (5%) for using cash.

Great spicy food and friendly staff. Food (10/10) - The food here is AMAZING! Perfect balance of spice to flavor and every single bite is electric. The sichuan numbing pepper in the Chongqing soup was DELICIOUS. Mix it with some of the white rice and you have a dish all by iteself. The chicken itself had a nice chew and was very fragrant. Loved the texture and flaovr of the vermicelli; nice bounce to the noodles while soaking in all the spicy soup. My one complaint would be that they have soft bones (sign of long boiling time) so be careful of that! Also got the spicy stir-fried pork kidney... don't diss it 'til you try it. Super good, with that nice bit of chew. Take a bite of pepper, kidney, and white rice and BOOM! Perfect bite. **Recommendation: Rice is a key component for the dishes here. Without rice, everything will be too spicy, too savory, and overall too overwhelming. The rice is the thing that helps tie everything together (as it frequently is) Service (8/10) - Good service; nothing notable. Nice people and I think most of them speak Mandarin. Service and seating was also fast. Order of things to come out of the kitchen was a bit strange: soup for the chicken, rice, stir-fry, chicken. Honestly, not that big of a problem but just decided to comment. Price (8/10) - The price here is a bit on the pricier side; $54 for 2 but there were some leftovers (had to make my own rice though). Some of the dishes are more worth than others. The Chonqing chicken was $25 but you got a large bowl of chicken with soup and vermicelli. On the other hand, the stir-fry for $20 was notably padded with vegetables and I would say a majority of the dish was not the kidney. At the very least, the taste of the food compensates. However, this place is likely not a college go-to. Overall, great restaurant that I will be coming back to again (maybe with my parents LOL) or at the very least, would come with a large group as it is more fitting for family style. Highly recommend!

My kid mentioned they usually are very pack and people would dine outdoor, but I guess we arrived early so there wasn't any wait time. Ordered few items, food came out very fast and the tastes are not bad at all. Beef Fried Rice Noodles: How do you differentiate if this dish is good or not, it is about how much excessive oil that's left on the plate. The stir fried was good, not too greasy, and they marinate the meat well. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, this place's meat was good. Only they could stir fried with even higher eat to create more "wok air" Sticky Rice Stick with Brown Sugar: First time trying this dish, so not sure what to expect. But it does seem to be a dessert to me, my comment would be higher if the rice stick is more chewy. Hot & Sour Shredded Potato: This is common dish from northern part of China. The way they prepared was awesome. The potato was not starchy and the seasoning is just right. A bit greasy but this is actually my favorite dish! Shrimp and Pork with Chives Dumplings: Meat is fresh and dumpling wrap is great too. Each dumpling size is not too big and wasn't torn. Taste is okay but maybe try another filling if I visit again. We had the seafood tofu hotpot, shrimp wonton, garlic green bean, mongolian beef, half hainan chicken, and ny steak spaghetti to-go. Was a little busy at 7 on a holiday so we waited like ten minutes to get our order in, the guy memorized our order right as I said it lol. He confirmed and we got our soup in ten mins, ten mins for green beans and mongolian beef, another ten minutes for our chicken, then like seven for hotpot. Most disappointing was chicken, it's not hainan at all and just standard hong kong white chicken. Taste is fine and fresh but was sad. Best was the seafood hotpot AND the wonton soup. Both had great flavor and saltiness and was just sooo good. Wontons were very tasty and had a lot of meat, definitely both pork and shrimp, and soup even had little shrimp in it ifkyk. The seafood hotpot had great variety and flavor, my parents were pleased with the fish bits in it, the tofu was yummy bc it's fried tofu, the crab texture was not great maybe overcooked and I didn't like the soft cucumber but otherwise the broccoli scallop shrimp tofu fish bok choy was all great. Green beans and mongolian beef SERIOUSLY needed some wok flavor and wish the beef had black pepper because the seasoning was a bit lacking (wok flavor would be great here) and overall the vegetables were a little undercooked. They were addictive though I definitely kept going back for more. Hot tea is jasmine tea. Service was a bit lackluster but totally understandable and even though I was in a rush we were in and out by an hour and like ten minutes which worked. Ambiance wise, I didn't like how the lights are half brighter and whiter than the sun and half nicely softly lit. Tables are nice wood and a bit sticky but okay. There's random Chinese TV on the walls, very traditional lol and I think no music. Overall very pleased! Will definitely come back as much as possible to support, and highly highly recommend.
