Had dinner at Paste Thai and was very happy with our meal. The restaurant was clean, moderately busy and food came out just in time. We ordered the thai iced tea, eggplant stir fry and beef pad thai. The eggplant stir fry WAS SOOOO GOOD that I already want to go back and order that again. The pad thai was delicious too and the portions are way more generous than other downtown Davis thai restaurants. One of us also does not eat egg and this is the first restaurant in Davis that allowed us to have the egg on the side instead of just a choice of with or without egg. They are very accommodating! Truly the worst Thai I've ever had. We ordered drunken noodles and yellow curry. EVERY Thai place I've been to yellow curry comes with white rice.... White rice is part of the dish so we essentially got half an order of yellow curry and they made us pay for white rice. Then drunken noodles with beef.... Looked like hamburger helper. Never had ground beef in a Thai dish.... Very odd. Also had no flavor and they serve this with green beans.... Updated review: I was in the mood for Thai takeout and decided to give this spot another try. This time I stuck to the chef's special items and while they are pricier, they tasted insanely good! Panang beef stew curry: A I was surprised how much beef they give. It's barely any bell pepper and all beef! The panang curry tastes great, a bit sweet and coconutty. Beef is tender and this pairs perfectly with rice. Crispy pork belly stir fry: A- I love the crispy pork belly. Have never had it stir fried in sauce before but the Chinese broccoli is nice. The last two times I've been here the front desk person has been so preoccupied over phone calls that she's just ignored us when we were the only people in their restaurant at 5:30. When questioned she didn't apologize or seem to care. We just left and went and spent our money at Sophia's. This has been the second time we dine here and both times they did not disappoint ! We found this place by walking into the shopping center a cold night and stopped for soup. We just went for lunch during the week and everything hit the spot. The iced lemon Thai tea and milk Thai tea, so good. We got the appetizer wings with bbq, soo crispy and flavorful. Best wings I've had in a while. For lunch with ordered a noodle dish, I forgot the name but added pork belly. It was amazing. Definitely a hidden gem. In my opinion, the best place to get Thai food in Davis, super yummy and plenty of parking in the plaza. Greeted by the front desk and seated right away, the menu has plenty of items. Although I went for dinner, there is a lunch menu which is a few dollars cheaper than dinner. The restaurant was a simple modern dining experience, great for group settings or just yourself. Ordered a Pad Thai with chicken ($17.95) and Pad Si Ew with chicken ($17.95), there is an extra cost for other protein except chicken, tofu, and veggies. The portion of the Pad Thai is fairly large, the medium spicy is quite spicy after eating a few bites, just kept drinking water and honestly took a break from eating because of the spice. With that, the waitress was able to pick up the too spicy and offered to remake our dishes which I really appreciated. I really dislike sending food back because I believe that it is my fault for ordering incorrectly. He explained that sometimes the chili can be spicier than other times. As for the food, the noodles had a bouncy texture, al dente for sure which I enjoy. The tamarind sauce on the pad Thai was really delicious and fresh. Pad si ew had plenty of veggies and super yummy. Weekday lunch with an old Davis colleague. I got the Pad Thai with Chicken, and a Thai Iced Tea. They got the Pad Se Ew with Tofu. When the food came out, their dish had chicken instead of tofu so the waitress took it back and the kitchen remade it, which cost us some time. There seemed to be only one waitress taking care of all of the tables, though. Usually, I would go for shrimp in the pad Thai, but it does seem pricier here. The lunch portion was pretty big, no/mild spice, and the Thai iced tea was good (no refills). Since our entree was delayed, we didn't have any more time on lunch break to get dessert or anything. If I'm ever back in Davis, I might consider coming back to Paste. Next time I will try the Thai green milk tea another reviewer here mentioned, I have only ever seen it at one other place so far (Manaao in West Sacramento). My husband and I really enjoyed our dinner here for the first time dining here on our way to see a concert at the Mondavi Center. We love Thai food and decided to give this place a try. The restaurant itself is quaint, small, very clean and modern inside. The hostess at the door and our waitress were very friendly and accommodating. We ordered two Thai iced teas and we both remarked to one another how this was the best version of this drink we ever had. Paste Thai is a restaurant located in the South Davis Nugget shopping plaza. It's location is a bit obscured, but this Thai restaurant is worth a try! You'll find many of the traditional entrees that you would normally expect at a Thai restaurant. There are items like pad thai all the way to tom yum soup. On my visit to Paste we tried the green curry, tofu appetizer, and papaya salad. I found the green curry to be excellent. It had a smooth consistency with delicious eggplant and chicken in it. It is made without a heavy influence of fish sauce, so if you're like me and prefer not to have that taste, this is the place for you! The green curry has a little spice to it, but it doesn't overwhelm. It's a great balance in flavor and is a dish I would order again! The tofu appetizer features a nice portion of tofu cut into large triangles. The tofu I found to be a bit bland, even with the sweet chili sauce it came with. I'd probably skip this one the next time I'm here. My friend had the papaya salad and she said that she enjoyed it overall. It came nicely presented. If you're into a little dessert at the end of the meal, I would recommend the fried bananas. These aren't the typical fried bananas that you'd usually see. The ones here look like little egg rolls. I was skeptical on how they would taste initially but I did find myself enjoying them quite a bit. The pricing at Paste is a little higher than I'd expect, but the restaurant is a nice little new place for Thai food in Davis! read more

Extremely over priced! For example, the fresh rolls are more than $20. They're a salad wrapped in rice paper, so they cost about $2 to make. They were originally large when this place opened. Now, they're as small as most fresh rolls and shouldn't cost more than $1 or $12. It's extremely disappointing to pay so much for so little food. I kept feeling taken advantage of here. So, I've finally decided to stop eating here. As the prices are outrageous. You can find the same food for almost half the price in San Francisco. You can make this food very easily with ingredients found at the Nugget for an eighth of the price. read more

Comparisons: If you like Coconut on T (Sacramento), you'll love Paste Thai. Their yellow curries are the best and now, I don't need to drive to Sacramento to get my curry fix. Tips for first timers: 1. They don't use fish sauce in any of their dishes, but it's always good to make sure before ordering. As an added bonus, you don't get overwhelmed by the strong fish smells that greet you at many Thai restaurants. 2. Medium spice is recommended, if you can handle it. I'd say if you can handle jalapeños that still have the seeds, you'll be just fine with a medium spice level. It really complimented the already bold flavors of the two dishes we ordered. 3. Plenty of free parking. 4. Save room for dessert. They have a black sticky rice dish you definitely need to experience. 5. Gluten-free and vegan available upon request. 6. Patio seating --- about 4 tables. Yellow Curry ($15.95, Grade A) : Mild yellow curry with carrots and potatoes. Very generous portions of semi-fried tofu squares and curry sauce so you have plenty to pour over your rice. Yellow curries are typically more mild than red and green curries and have a very, very subtle sweetness from the coconut milk. That's why I do recommend getting some level of comfortable spice level to really balance this dish ... savory, sweet, and spicy. The food trifecta! I ordered it with medium spice and after a few forkfuls, I quickly realized I am more of a mild-plus kind of eater. But you never know which spice level you can manage at a Thai restaurant until you give it a try. I'd say if you can handle medium spice at Thai Canteen (Davis, CA), you'll be able to handle this with ease. Drunken Noodle ($15.95, Grade A) : Stir-fried wide rice noodles with bell peppers, green beans, basil, and mild spicy Thai chilis. Again, if you can handle the medium spice, go for it. The stir-fried noodles had that pan sear that I really enjoy in my wide noodles for added texture. I really appreciated that they give you a lot of noodles. Sometimes, restaurants try to fool you with all the veggies, but when I order a noodle dish, I want noodles. The vegetables were crisp and the fried tofu was fresh. For those that haven't had drunken noodle and usually order pad Thai, the best way I could describe it would be drunk noodle is spicy and savory while pad Thai is nuttier and sweeter. Dessert / Black Sticky Rice with Mango ($6.99, Grade A) : Black sticky rice? Yup, that's what I said. It's a little thicker and if it matters, is usually healthier compared to white rice. But healthy doesn't mean tasteless or less tasty. I really enjoyed the textural component of black sticky rice and with the condensed milk poured over, this could literally be a breakfast option. The mango was fresh and all I can say is if you get asked for a dessert at a Thai restaurant, this is a standard, but they elevate it with a black rice. Dessert / Roti with ice cream and sweet milk ($5.99, Grade A) : Ice cream choices (mango, coconut, taro, and vanilla). Roti is a pan-fried flatbread. It looks and tastes very similar to Indian naan, but the main distinction is the dough itself. Naan uses leavened while roti dough is unleavened which makes naan a little chewier than roti. Paste Thai pan fries the roti and finish it with butter. It's cut into 4 triangles and a big scoop of ice cream is placed in the center. Roti by itself would be a great carb to compliment any dish, but as a dessert and a vehicle for a scoop of ice cream, sign me up. Bottom line: Pen (owner) was very welcoming. Felt like we were invited to eat at her home. The food was very flavorful and generous portions. The interior remodel of the old Chicken Hawkers location is a great success ... clean and modern. Wonderful food and a nice atmosphere. We came on a Sunday for lunch (my birthday) and I ordered the Praramrong Song curry with chicken. It came on a bed of steamed cabbage and was flanked by fresh broccoli. I ordered it mild as I can no longer eat spicy foods without coughing and these days it is best to avoid coughing. It had just a small touch of heat and was delicious. My husband had the Pad Si Ew at medium spicy level. I tried it and the one small bite I had started me coughing. I can't imagine what Hot or Thai Hot levels are like. So, be warned. There are several tables for two outdoors. Great place! Welcome! We had a great meal. Service was fantastic. It's definitely a little bit pricier than some of the places downtown, but right now everybody needs to survive. This seems to be run by some great people so I would love to see it be successful in the spot. The thing that I love the most is the fact that it's full service. I am so tired of everything being counter service in this community. Sometimes it's nice to just go out and have a friendly person bring us food. The waitress was very helpful and friendly. There had quite a great menu! We were not feeling terribly imaginative that night, so we had the pad Thai and drunken noodles. Both were excellent. The drunken noodles were a little bit spicy, but honestly just right. We also treated our self to the sticky rice. Coconut dessert. There were some chatter in the kitchen that got very loud at times. Not a dealbreaker or anything but that might be something that they might want to keep track of since it's a fairly small place and things tend to echo. They have a whole bunch of taps on the wall for beer. I presume that is because it's leftover from the pizza place a couple of businesses ago. I was kind of excited when I saw the taps there, but quickly realized there was no IPA , I think if you're going to have draft beer, an IPA would be nice All in all, it was great. We went to Paste Thai for dinner for the first time, but definitely not the last. The restaurant was busy and full at 7:00 on a Saturday, but the wait time wasn't bad, about 15-20 mins. The service was great even though they only had 2 people serving. They were hustling. The food came out fresh, hot, and very tasty! We got the stir fry eggplant with beef and the curry mango with chicken. The curry was good. It had just enough spice (we asked for mild) but not so hot that we couldn't eat it. If you like it spicy, the customer next to us asked for "Thai Hot" so that means extremely hot for us, but their mild was just right. The stir fry was the highlight. The seasoning was perfect, the beef was tender, and the vegetables were so fresh. We have to go back soon to try some of the other dishes.
