Red S-3 Curry Basil Snapper* and gratium with chicken
Tiffany H.

Came here per a recommendation from a friend. Tried the curry basil red snapper which was quite fishy and the fish tasted old. Also didn't like that it had tons of cabbage and not much fish. By contrast the gratium was simple with chicken, garlic, tomatoes and parsley but had a lot of meat with great flavor. We got mild spice but added extra spice which was great! I enjoyed the Thai chili and dried spice. Rice is separate and you have to pay extra per portion. Service was average. Our table was still dirty from the previous occupants. I told the waitress who cleaned it.

Pad thai, Drunken Noodles, Thai Noodle Soup*, Lemongrass calamari, Red curry
David Y.

Pad Thai was solid, but I wish it was sweeter and spicier! Get pork or beef since the chicken is dry and does not combine with the rest of the ingredients. Drunken Noodles was ok, it was a bit bland. Red Curry was fine, more coconut sweet than savory! Lemongrass calamari was good with the portions! Server was nice, cost per person $20-25, and wait time was long but it was a busy day.

Sister time
Adrienne K.

Camping here on a Friday night with my younger sister. It was busy but was able to find a table right at the entrance. Nice lighting could be intimate for a date. Friendly service and very attentive. Drinks were nicely done and refreshing. I got the Pomegranate Lemon Drop and my sister got the lychee... forgot the exact name. Ether way both tasty. The Basil rice, Massaman, Pad Thai noodles, and spring rolls delicious! Restrooms located inside by kitchen patio outside is so quaint. I recommend.

love sophia's thai, i def think it's a hidden gem in davis! ordered the chicken pad see ew and a cocktail, and it was great! love the atmosphere outside as well!

Terrace - perfectly suited for dinner (even at 100F)

Sophia's deserved a 5+ star rating: Food is amazing, service fantastic! We sat on the patio and had calamari as appetizers! They are crispy not oily at all. Servers are so extremely polite, attentive and go above and beyond. Highly recommend!

A-8 Som Tom - Regular, Thai Hot, Peanut Allergy ($13)

Date: Monday, September 9th, 2024 Party of: 2 Meal: Dinner Takeout Time Ordered: around 8:30pm Time Ready: about 30 mins later A-8 Som Tom - Regular, Thai Hot, Peanut Allergy ($13) C-1 Jungle Curry - Regular, Chicken, Thai Hot, Brown Rice ($21) T-14 Holy Basil Stir Fry (Pad Kra Pao) - Regular, Chicken, Thai Hot, White Rice ($20) The hubby and I typically stop by Davis to get gas on the way home. Since I like trying new spots, we decided to also grab dinner here. I was lazy when it came to ordering, so I picked Sophia's since they had an easy online system. Who likes calling restaurants nowadays anyways? Pickup was pretty easy. Tho there seems to be one entrance for dining in and another for takeaway? At least that's what I gathered when I got here. Our meal was ready when I arrived, so I just grabbed it and left. Once I got home, I realized there peanuts in the papaya salad. I double checked the email confirmation and the attached ticket to the takeout bag. Both said peanut allergy. Luckily I don't actually have a peanut allergy. I just don't like them. They were whole peanuts and not crushed, so it was easy to avoid. The other two dishes were fine. A little bland, and not too much heat for Thai hot. They did provide a bunch of spicy condiments which helped flavor the dishes. I adore super spicy, fishy, sour, etc, thai food. Hit all my taste buds at once! So I found the food here kinda muted in flavor. Three stars overall. But knocking one for the down for the peanuts. REVIEW #3559

Our dinner selections
Sandra T.

My husband and I were craving Thai food and decided to try Sophia's, a spot we've passed by before and noticed live music in the bar area. We chose to sit outside in the restaurant section, and to our surprise, on a Saturday night at 7 PM, there was no wait. We were seated right away at a lovely outdoor table, and the weather was perfect for al fresco dining. We ordered the Massaman curry, a side of rice, and drunken noodles with tofu. The food arrived quickly, the portions were generous, and everything was delicious! It's not a fancy place, but it's cute, clean, and welcoming. For our first visit, we were impressed, and we'll definitely be back. Plus, our meal was under $50, which was a great value!

Beef pad Thai
Hannah G.

The ambiance is the best part. The food was good but it felt like my stuff had been sitting awhile before they brought it to me because the top was all kind of stuck together. I would prefer Thai canteen for pad Thai because it's more flavorful and in my opinion better quality for a better price. The service was also good as there were 8 of us there

Drinks are great price. Food is delicious and plenty for leftovers if you want to take it home.

Sophia's is a great place, the food is amazing. I went on a Friday evening and it's very busy so give yourself time and patience with the staff service might be a wait. It's a cozy place tucked in. You have to find street parking which can be time consuming. But worth it!!

Our Sunday scaries feast
Kristin N.

We came here to run away from the Monday scaries and there were other people here on the run too. There is an extensive menu with a variety of options for almost everyone's taste for Thai food including vegetarian, seafood, curries, and appetizers. The portions were much larger than expected and come out as family style to our surprise haha. Funny conversation we had btw when we ordered ginger beer but weren't sure and it went like that We: hi, is this a ginger ale or ginger beer? Waiter: I don't know, what did you order? We: we ordered ginger beer Waiter: well then that is what it is

The Cloudbreaker immediately met my taste buds with bitterness and then left my tongue completely numb for several minutes. Perhaps those sensations would have paid off if they were followed by a calming or THC-like effect, but I didn't experience any change in mental state. The comfortable atmosphere saves this establishment from 1 star. Dim lights, leather couches, chill music, and colorful tiki wall art make for a decent study spot or date night. However, if you're hanging out at a business, you gotta support it, and to support it, you gotta buy something -- I can't see myself buying anything kava-related with any ounce of enjoyment. Surely there must be some variation of a kava drink that tastes delightful. I don't want to spend any more money finding out though.

If you know, it is already incredibly hard taking an autistic child to a restaurant. The manager thought it was ok to tell my 13 year old to put on my autistic son's shoes..... As my son is screaming and heaving a full meltdown over shoes now, the manager continues to apologize because there were possibly glass shards on the ground in his restaurant. I will never eat here and will make sure to let all my friends with and without kids with disabilities to never eat here. What an unacceptable excuse this place made me and my family feel. We chose the table because the booths looked uncomfortable. Another couple of diners came to eat while we were there. I had the Yellow Curry. The dish itself was just OK, it was a bit too sweet, I guess from the coconut milk. The portion size was good, I'll get an additional meal from the leftovers. My friend had the Pad Kee Mow and she graded it "A". Perhaps I made the wrong choice or am more finicky about my food. After eating the waiter came by holding a tablet saying he could take payment. He didn't show us the totals, just said we could give him our credit cards. We did so and we each asked for a printed receipt. When I got my receipt I saw there were two totals, one for cash and the other for credit (worked out to be a 3% fee.) That was never mentioned, neither by the waiter nor by the menu. I usually pay by cash but when the waiter said he'd take our cards, I assumed that was the preferred payment method.

The bartenders serve you with a smile and there's always a lively group of patrons mingling. Pool tables sit near the restroom if you can manage to secure one. Don't get your hopes up though; it seems like a finders-keepers type of situation once people occupy the tables. I didn't feel like anything particularly stood out about this place. Some reasons are inherent to its location in the heart of a college town; there's always competition with other neighboring bars. Also, most undergrads don't bat an eye at the ambiance as long as alcohol and music are involved. But some of the reasons are self-inflicted... the dance floor needs more space and the DJ sounded like he had a generic club playlist on shuffle. Forgot to close my tab so I met the bartender the next morning with a lovely 20% surcharge. I know that's the standard for many bars (even though I see it as a mere cash grab), but 20% feels like such an insult for the subpar experience here. If you're a student at UC Davis, you should still give this place a visit. I'm sure it's a blast for the average 21 year old. It's also a ritual in your undergrad years: experiencing the crappy club scene in order to learn how overrated it is.

One note if you're a heat seeker -- the Pad Thai doesn't get very spicy, even when requested. I like extreme heat, so factor that in accordingly. Most people will find it perfectly seasoned.
