Indoor seating is limited, but since we arrived early, we snagged a table by the window overlooking the patio. We were promptly given menus and took some time to browse the lunch specials and regular menu. I decided on the Pra Ram lunch special ($14.95) with fresh spinach, fried onions, and peanut sauce. I chose chicken for the protein, and the special also included a small mixed green salad and a vegetable spring roll. The Pra Ram was very good. Sophia's is hands down one of the best restaurants in town and definitely the best Thai we have. The restaurant is small but I enjoy sitting in the covered patio. My boyfriend and I stopped by for dinner date night in Downtown Davis. We especially loved the cute ambiance outside! However, the food was mediocre at best. We started with a Thai tea & a beer, which we enjoyed. Our food took about an hour to arrive - many others who had arrived after us received their food before we did. By the time we got our food, the egg rolls were cold and tasted like they came from a freezer. The drunken noodles had absolutely no flavor and were not seasoned whatsoever. Came here per a recommendation from a friend. Tried the curry basil red snapper which was quite fishy and the fish tasted old. Also didn't like that it had tons of cabbage and not much fish. By contrast the gratium was simple with chicken, garlic, tomatoes and parsley but had a lot of meat with great flavor. We got mild spice but added extra spice which was great! I enjoyed the Thai chili and dried spice. Rice is separate and you have to pay extra per portion. Service was average. Our table was still dirty from the previous occupants. Camping here on a Friday night with my younger sister. It was busy but was able to find a table right at the entrance. Nice lighting could be intimate for a date. Friendly service and very attentive. Disappointing food. Pad gra pow came out soaking wet and appeared closer to asparagus chicken soup. Rad na rice noodles were over cooked and drowning in generic gravy. Our meal was ready when I arrived, so I just grabbed it and left. Once I got home, I realized there peanuts in the papaya salad. I double checked the email confirmation and the attached ticket to the takeout bag. Both said peanut allergy. Luckily I don't actually have a peanut allergy. I just don't like them. They were whole peanuts and not crushed, so it was easy to avoid. The other two dishes were fine. A little bland, and not too much heat for Thai hot. They did provide a bunch of spicy condiments which helped flavor the dishes. I adore super spicy, fishy, sour, etc, thai food. Hit all my taste buds at once! My husband and I were craving Thai food and decided to try Sophia's, a spot we've passed by before and noticed live music in the bar area. We chose to sit outside in the restaurant section, and to our surprise, on a Saturday night at 7 PM, there was no wait. We were seated right away at a lovely outdoor table, and the weather was perfect for al fresco dining. We ordered the Massaman curry, a side of rice, and drunken noodles with tofu. The food arrived quickly, the portions were generous, and everything was delicious! It's not a fancy place, but it's cute, clean, and welcoming. Oh man, what a trip down memory lane! Fond memories of Sophia's back when I was a student here. Back then, they used to have an unlimited thai iced tea refills deal. No longer the case (and probably for the best). Came here on a rainy Sunday evening. We had a group of seven, so opted for outside seating with the awning, since inside seating was a bit tight. Even just waiting for the bathroom, I felt like I was in the way, since the bathroom and kitchen share a narrow corridor where employees have to pass through and a bussing station on the other side. Apparently, they have a bathroom outside as well, so that would have been an option. As a group, we ordered some drinks, curries, and noodle dishes. I forgot how much fun the drinks are. Took awhile for our food to come out, but when it did, it all came out at once and the portion sizes were generous. The curries tasted fine, but were a bit more fluid than I am used to for a curry. Last Thursday I met up with a good friend of mine to try this place out in downtown Davis! We've dined at various locations together, but we both wanted to try Sophia's. Lunch was a good time to come. It wasn't too busy, and most people were sitting in the covered patio area. We opted to sit inside and were seated right away. It was quiet inside and clean. My friend chose the pad Thai lunch special, which comes with a side salad and a veggie egg roll. For $14 it was a good portion size, and we both tried the noodles. They had a good wok flavor and the tofu was bouncy and chewy! We liked how many peanuts she got to sprinkle over her pad Thai. I chose the red curry noodles instead of a lunch special. You have a choice of red or green curry. For $18 it was a good size, a bit on the pricey side, but ultimately I could not finish my curry noodles and took some leftovers home. The curry was rich and I asked for the spice rack so I could put some chili flakes in the soup, which added another dimension to the flavor. There was a good amount of chicken and the veggies were all cooked perfectly, and had a good bite. The noodles were a bit clumped together, but the dish does come with wide rice noodles. However, they were not overcooked and still had a good mouthfeel to them. We both chose Thai tea and were pleasantly surprised to find that they offer unlimited refills, as long as you are sitting down. You cannot take unfinished Thai tea to go. For $4, the Thai tea was actually really good, and not watered down like some other restaurants'. Sophia's also offers beers and other alcoholic drinks, but we were there for lunch and as it was our first time, we just wanted to try the classic dishes. I would definitely come back with my husband and order a beer next time though. Overall, for downtown Davis, the price is on the higher side, but the service is fantastic, the glasses they use for water and drinks are very cool (they're shaped like bamboo trunks), the dishes that the food is served on are made of quality plastic, the takeout containers are some of the best I've seen, the food is pretty great, and I would like to come back and try their other dishes. read more

Yesterday my niece, my 3 1/2‑year‑old son, and I came here to celebrate my niece's birthday and enjoy the outdoor patio. Instead, our experience was ruined by the owner, Gordon Langstaff, and his completely inappropriate behavior around a small child. My son, who is three and on the autism spectrum, briefly picked up a loose electrical cord that was lying on the ground under the patio stairs (I have a photo of how exposed it was). Instead of calmly addressing the situation, Gordon walked over in a rude, irritated tone and said, "Can you do something?" I told him I was already handling it and redirecting my son, but as he walked away he started cursing under his breath, using foul language that was clearly audible right next to my child. There is no excuse for swearing like that in front of a three‑year‑old, especially when the unsafe cord was left out in the open by the restaurant in the first place. Whether or not my son is autistic, families should never be subjected to hostility and foul language from the owner of a restaurant. If you offer outdoor seating and leave cords and other hazards accessible, you should expect children to be curious and respond with basic courtesy, not anger. The food itself was mediocre, and after that interaction it honestly didn't matter. This was supposed to be a special birthday outing, and his attitude and language completely ruined it. read more

I always come here for the curry noodles, my friends and I have been obsessed with them since college. I usually get it with green curry and chicken, as the flavors balance together well with soup and noodles. Their pad kra pao is also very flavorful, but would definitely recommend getting it with rice as there needs to be something to balance the strong flavors. I like that they offer various brews (both local and less local), and was pleasantly surprised by the 2 Towns Ciderhouse cosmic apple cider they had. I'm usually not big on ciders, but loved the taste! Service wasn't slow but wasn't fast either. A lot of people said this drink is the strongest out of the Trinity but it honestly was very refreshing and pretty easy to down. Sophia's Thai Bar & Kitchen holds a special place in my heart. Once upon a time when I was a student at UC Davis, I would come to Sophia to satisfy my craving for Asian comfort food. So now 10+ years after graduating from Davis, I decided to do a quick stop at Davis during a business trip and walk down the memory lane to my college days' favorite place - Sophia's Thai. I ordered all the food I used to like to eat - curry, pad Thai, and fried calamari. Overall the food was EXACTLY how I remembered! It was so good! I enjoyed eating every single dish there and was just amazed at the fact that their food did not change after 10+ some years!!! However, I do have to say the ambiance changed. TTHERE WERE SO MANY FLIES!!!!!! LIKE DISGUSTING FLIESSSSSS! I guess flies always find Asian food yummy and wanted to land on every single dish on the table. On one hand, I was holding chopsticks busy stuffing my face while the other hand was flapping around to make sure the flies don't land on my food! Ugh, I have never seen so many flies attacking food before. We even put some of the food to the side just just so the flies can enjoy those food and leave our actual food alone. Nope. Humans are too complicated for their dirty little heads, and they wanted all. Eventually my enjoyable lunch turned into a quick bite like how it was in my old college days... So a quick tip: DO NOT SIT OUTSIDE! If you are concerned with Covid, get it to go.
