I've been around Davis long enough to see this building go through 3 different names! We heard that as its current name it had great food so we decided to try it out. We got there right at opening and the server/hostess, Aurora, greeted us with a warm smile and welcome. There are two choices of spots to sit at - low tables/booths or high top tables with stools. We opted for a low table. I ordered the Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese sandwich with sweet potato fries and my friend ordered the Chinichurri Tri-Tip sandwich with a side salad. When our meals came out, we were pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes! I feel like I had a lot of fries on my plate and the sandwich was stuffed with meat! The side salad and tri-tip was pretty hefty too. My sandwich was DELICIOUS! I was only able to eat half so I left with half for lunch the next day. My friend was the same. I love when I can get two meals out of one!! The restaurant carries a very fun vibe. I can imagine it is so lively when it is packed! There is an area in the back that gives off a speakeasy vibe. Full disclosure: what kept me coming back was the Portobello Mushroom Fries -- an appetizer that's no longer on the menu. RIP. That said, there's still plenty worth coming back for. The Cowboy Cuban is the next best thing I've found on the menu and worth ordering. The house dressing is excellent too. The Down the Hatch burger was decent, just didn't have quite enough flavor for my taste -- not a reason to skip the place, but I'd go Cowboy Cuban first. The pickles are sweet, the burger patty is large and juicy, and the pairings give it the pedestal. Came in at 12 on a Sunday and there were very little people, so service was quick. Ambiance is very comfortable and the hosts are great. Had the steak and avocado salad which came in about ten minutes. The regular sized salad is super big and very flavorful, so much that it doesn't need the dressing and cheese. Every component except the veggies and nuts were seasoned and the steak was perfectly cooked medium rare. It was a bit tough especially because it's not fully cut through when served, but there are tender parts. The bleu cheese is only funky on its own and pairs great with the pickled onions. I stopped into this place while waiting to go to a Yelp event. We wanted a drink and this place looked inviting. It's a nice size and has a dinning are to sit but we went straight to the bar. There were a few people inside and at the bar too. The bartender greeted us and gave us a drink menu. He had to bring some food to outer patrons. My family and I mistakenly drove out to Davis while trying to go to West Sacramento - if you know you know - so we decided to have dinner while in the area. Bull 'N Mouth seemed interesting and had decent ratings on Yelp. I liked the cozy feel inside and they even had a really cool area that they labeled "Library" where they encourage you to be loud. It had a comfy couch, TVs and even a book wall. We ordered the Elote Chicken Salad, Grilled Cheese Burger with Garlic Fries and the Kids Grilled Cheese with Fruit. The Elote Chicken Salad was okay - they originally brought me the Cobb Salad by mistake and it actually looked better than the salad I ordered. My daughter loved her Grilled Cheese and she liked that the fruit was thin apple slices and dried cranberries. My husband liked his burger as well. We came on trivia night without knowing so the place was pretty busy, but our server was friendly and attentive. Parking was surprisingly easy in the late evening with plenty of street spots available, and there's even a lot located just across the street if needed. The service was great. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit, which made the meal even more enjoyable. The steak and avocado salad was delicious. It came loaded with grilled tri tip slices, rip avocado, blue cheese, cherry tomatoes, pickled red onions, and toasted walnuts. A good balance of rich and fresh flavors. I opted for the green goddess dressing, which complemented the salad beautifully. We also tried the Bull Burger, and it's clear why it's a favorite. Served on a buttery artisan bun, the burger was packed with flavor thanks to crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, smoky BBQ sauce, and their signature Bull Sauce. We decided to upgrade to the garlic fries, and they were worth every bite, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfectly seasoned with plenty of garlic. This was not a full dinner review but for Happy hour- so I will keep it brief. I was happy with what I had and wanted to share. Drinks- 8/10 - I wanted more, flavor was right for an Old Fashioned and the JD Bonded Whiskey is highly recommended. Brandied Cherry was a fantastic touch. Beer selection is good here too. Pub food: 7/10. Chicharrones were so deliciously light and crispy- a 9/10! Pork Flautas fell a little flat but just ok is fine for a quick bite of bbq flavor. I would try the Tri Tip in a salad or something else next time. Overall it's a 7.8/10 with room to grow. I will give the BBq a chance so I can truly gage the overall experience. Came here for a late lunch, early dinner on a Saturday. The ambiance inside is amazing, it's like a proper pub. In the back they have a cozy library nook which is set up like a lounge but you can also sit here and eat. The decor is great and there's plenty to look at while you're inside. Service was average for a midday lull, our server who was also the bartender was personable, friendly, accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. We felt welcomed and looked after. Food was very good! We had the Smokehouse Fries to start. The pulled pork and toppings were a great flavor combo, delicious. The fries were big and extra crispy just like we liked them. Portion was great. For mains we had the Alabama Jama sandwich and the Chicken Cali both with side salads. The ranch dressing for the salads was sooooo good. I want the recipe! The library was pretty... but sticky. Yes sticky. We walked in and the girl folding napkins didn't look up from her phone, but the bartender welcomed us in. Decent selection of local beers and liquor. I got a soda and the cups were plastic which was interesting, the thin ones from a school cafeteria vibe. I ordered the tritip salad which tasted like burnt cumin meat, really overcooked and likely reheated from the day before. The menu said candied walnuts, they were raw unseasoned walnuts. Avocado was the best part. Partner ordered the grilled cheese burger which was literally a burger patty in between a grilled cheese cut in half. Not bad but nothing to write home about. The fries were a thick cut with some salt, again just edible. The fried green beans were really coated thick with something we couldn't quite put our finger on, very crunchy but a ton of that breading starch taste. Nothing special, but prices also were reasonable so I imagine the college kids love it here. Love this place. I have been coming here since I was in college. (Many many years ago!). This management runs it nicely. Our waitress was Skylar. So sweet and patient. We sat at a high top near the door and it took about 20-30 minutes for my son and his girlfriend to join us. She was attentive and patient even when we stayed for 2 hours. I gotta say the food here is great! The pulled pork is amazing. The mac 'n cheese is great. My husband usually gets the 3 meat platter with 2 sides. The ribs were good and the pulled pork, the sausage he didn't get to because he was full. He had coleslaw and mac n cheese on the side. I didn't try the coleslaw but he liked it. The chicken burger and salad the others had looked sooo good. I will be back to try them. They still have the library there that they have had for years. It was a hotter-than-hot summer day in Davis and I was in town to help out with an ahhhhmazing Yelp Elite Event at a nearby tiki bar. My colleague and I were famished after the event, and she recommended we check out Bull 'N Mouth for some late night eats. I was not disappointed! We started with a massive plate of delicious popcorn shrimp. They were super hot and super tasty, served with a yummy dipping sauce, and the perfect accompaniment to one of my faves: an Anderson Valley amber ale (which is nearly impossible to find on tap - or even in a can - anywhere near my house in the PNW). For an entree, I grabbed their steak and avocado salad. The veggies and dressing were yummy and fresh. The steak, while perfectly cooked, was pretty tough to be honest, and I found it hard to finish. We called in a pick up order on a Sunday afternoon. There were some items we were interested in ordering after seeing menu photos on Yelp, but learned they had recently changed the menu. The first 2 attempts were gone, the 3rd attempt was still on the menu but not available, so we settled on a 4th choice. Tried Bull'n Mouth while in Davis for lunch. Right from the start, the vibe is spot on--low lights and walls decked out with old-school beer cans, some from a while ago. The kind that requires a can opener to pop them open. The decor is so unique; it really sets the chill bar vibes. We did have a minor hiccup with the soda spout, as our first sodas tasted a little off. But the staff quickly got us switched over to Pepsi, so no big deal there. For food, we ordered the Cowboy Cuban and the Bull Burger, both of which came with these large, crispy fries that were just perfect. On each table, there's a bottle of their BBQ sauce, which we used to dip our fries in, and let me tell you, it was amazing! Also comes with a small side of picked bell pepper. Ordered "The Bull" Burger as listed on the menu and cooked to medium doneness and opted for the fries over the salad. It all satisfied, no disappointments on my side. I'll happily come back for a delicious meal! SERVICE Greeted immediately, questions answered quickly, seated and helped very quickly. The service is on point. DECOR A clean well apportioned western-ish older style of a classy bar. I like the vibe and the layout. The library is a cool touch and would like to come back with friends and hang out there. Passing through Davis for the weekend and had a meal here--it was decent but left a little to be desired. I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could! Service was nice, the place was clean and had a fun pub atmosphere. Food was good but nothing spectacular. Their beer cheese with peppers and andouille sausage and pretzel bread was quite yummy. They took their shrimp po boy off the menu :( I was so sad about that. Got the chicken sandwich instead, which was just okay. A little boring, and sort of dry. The fries were nice and crispy but definitely a little greasy. I actually had major salad envy from my partner, who got the chicken elote salad (subbed mixed greens instead of iceberg lettuce--that's the way to go). Really enjoyed the freshness and combination of flavors of everything. Their drinks were mid, sorry to say. The Pollinator was good but something in it was too sweet for me (better as the ice melted) and my partner didn't like the margarita mix they use for any of their margs. They didn't have a ton of gluten free options. I'm not gluten free but my partner is, and I always feel bummed when the only thing he can really eat is a salad (though to be fair, I liked his salad more than my sandwich.) They do have bbq options (their slaw and salad are the only GF sides--fries are not gluten free) and I think they may have been able to do lettuce wrapped burgers, it just would've been nice to have something else like a rice bowl during dinner time as an option. Two out of five of us got sandwiches and took off the majority of the bread and ended up feeling kind of icky afterward. Not anything crazy but just a little gross. All in all, not a bad option especially for late night but not great overall. If I found myself back here I'd try something else with an open mind, but I don't think I'd be back unless everything else was closed. read more

I'm rating this in terms of a "family restaurant" so take that as context. I was searching for a sit down in downtown Davis with a kids menu, and this is one of the few options. First time visiting. Ambience - Came at lunch time, was pretty slow. Lighting is low and gives off a kind of dingy feel. Decor is a bit maximalist for my taste, but it's intended to be a cozy college bar of course. Service - Okay. My soft drink wasn't refilled during my meal but the waitress caught it when the check came. She offered it in a to go cup which was nice. Food came out a bit slow even as the place wasn't too busy (Saturday PM, school in session). Food - Here's where are the lost stars are. Value for the quality was off. Pricey with lots of up charges ($1 to add cheese to a kids hamburger, $2 for garlic fries). My chicken sandwich - the filet - was almost flavorless. Almost like it wasn't even salted. Pickled onions, peppers, and asking for a side of buffalo made it edible. Garlic fries had very little garlic and the fries were more steak fries shape which is not my fave (soggier). Kids meals were pricey and I was thrown off by the dried cranberries in the fruit side. I expected all fresh fruit. Husband had the down the hatch burger and said "just okay." All in all, we won't be back. The brewery in town is where a $20 burger is worth it. Convenient to have this restaurant in downtown but that's not enough to balance out the so-so food. The drinks are very inconsistent. In September of last year they used to serve the $3 ciders and beers in pint glasses but now they use little plastic cups. Same with the $2 shooters they are in like Dixie cups now. The deal was too good to be true but still a good amount now for the price (but used to be way better). Sometimes the customer service is pretty bad but there are a lot of people and only 2 staff members so they should put in more people. Our first time here and the food and service were stellar! We got a table outside and they were accommodating, kindly turning on the heater for us. I ordered the Cali Cobb, which was fantastic - the perfect salad with fresh cucumbers, avocado, strawberries, bacon bits and crumbled blue cheese and the dressing on the side was so yummy! Had a really unfortunate experience. Went to have an appetizer and drinks Saturday afternoon, wasn't busy. Ordered 1 drink and 2 shots to split with my partner over 1-2 hours. Went to the bar to order a mixed drink and hang out longer, but then I get accused of "stumbling" and told I can't be served. This is the first time this has ever happened to me and with my partner to witness it was a humiliating experience. My partner and I left embarrassed and confused and are still unsure of why the bartender would make this untrue claim. If they didn't want to serve me because they thought I had ordered too much in too little time, they should have just said that instead of accusing me of visibly being intoxicated, which was very untrue. I pondered that they may have refused to serve me because they thought my partner was underage, because since she didn't directly order any drinks, they didn't ask for her ID. This obviously could have been handled by just asking her for her ID when they saw her sharing my drinks. I believe this situation could have been handled much more professionally if they would have just communicated these concerns. To top it all off, we left so quickly after being denied service that we left our brand new vinyl records on the table. Called back the next day and allegedly none of the staff had seen them. read more
