Trivia Time: What brewery, largely considered the oldest in the world, began brewing in 1040? For an extra dose of bonus, what brewery started just ten days later? (I was happy to find they had a couple from the oldest, which also happens to brew my favorite beer of all time!) If I could give six stars, I would. This is the type of place I want in the town where I live. Sort of dusty and divey, sort of eclectic and weird, but all sorts of awesome. The outdoor seating is a little ramshackle. The staff seems a little overwhelmed, but friendly. But the core of this place, the thing that should be excellent? Well that is the beer, and it is so awesome. Come for a drink and popcorn, leave with a new glass and a few awesome beers. Find a beer not on tap or in the cooler? Ask them to chill it for you. Grab a draft and wait. Have some time to kill? Open up your Untappd account and look at the stars and reviews of their beers. You'll certainly find some great ones. Since there were so many beers to choose from, I chose to ask them to chill a bottled beer I wanted to try and then I did a sampler flight. This is my favorite beer place now! Very friendly service and knowledgeable staff. They have over 20 beers on tap that change often and a large selection of rare bottles and cans. They post the current tap list on their Facebook page. You can buy a flight of five, half pour, or pints. If you bought a bottle from the shop, you can sit down and drink it there and they will provide the appropriate glassware. They also let you bring food from outside. My relationship with Davis Beer Shoppe had its ups and downs throughout the years. But bottom line is that the only thing I can really complain about nowadays is the very limited seating. DBS gets crowded easily and expansion would really help. But at the same time, there is nowhere in town where better selection of taps and bottles/cans can be found. I do occasionally have gripes about how they wouldn't let anyone in until someone leaves (especially when there is a special event), but that just goes back to the limited space mentioned before. However, even for Pliny the Younger tapping I was able to get two 8oz pours which is pretty much as good as it gets. I also appreciate the fact that Davis Beer Shoppe keeps the prices reasonable, unlike many other establishments that just go for the money. DBS has been around a long time, and even though there were times when I would get frustrated with some of the practices, I have to acknowledge the enthusiasm and passion they have for the beer. And that is deserving the full 5 stars. read more

One of the best beer shops in Davis~ Love how its both a bar and provide bottle selections in the back. They can range anywhere from $5-$40. Beers on draft is super affordable, from $6-$10 (16 oz, some are 10 oz) and change weekly. Seating is limited, so we had to stand and drink. I got the blood orange cider ($6) and the pizza port ($6). I liked how the blood orange cider was not too sweet, with the right amount of orange flavor. The pizza port was red ale, I liked the sour after taste, it was something I've never had before. I also had a sip of my friend's banana bread ale, it was surprisingly tasty, with a hint of banana flavor. Overall, atmosphere is good and staff is friendly. Highly recommend for those beer connoisers. :) Will definatly want to by bottled beer selections the next time I visit. read more

And where else in Davis can you buy a Munich Oktoberfest themed glass boot for holding 1L of your favorite seasonal fall selection? Neither a bar nor a brewpub nor a beer garden, this is an authentic bottle shop, with a front room added on for sampling beer by the glass (25+ choices on offer each day), amidst a wealth of beer themed artwork and other collectibles. Sort of like a museum, with a sense of history emanating from the walls, but also very future oriented in terms of the innovative craft beers on tap. Hazy IPAs are particularly good choices from local breweries like Berryessa Brewing Company in Winters and New Glory Craft Brewery in Sacramento, along with those made by Fieldwork Brewing Company in Berkeley. You will also find some higher end aged stouts and porters on the shelves along with wild fermented ales (e.g. Libertine Brewing Company) aged in a variety of interesting ways, part of the wine/beer/mead/cider mashup that is slowly effecting a craft brew revolution in the US and beyond. Think of this place as an extension of the UC Davis campus with a focus on the fermentation arts side of things. Alcoholic indulgences do not get more intellectual than this. Awesome place! Recently turned 21 and have been getting into drinking beer. Although I like beer, im still very new to it and like much of the lighter beers. Some of the ones I tried and like were "Break side lunch break. North coast scrimshaw, Kern river paddle left, and Happy Palm track 7" They have about 23 beers on draft! And they change everyday! First the good - The service is friendly and prompt. The beers are numerous and high end, even have a wide selection of sours and other hard to find brews; really terrific. While they don't sell food they do allow you to being in food from outside. That's almost unheard of! Now the bad - good luck getting in at anytime other than the middle of the afternoon. Really, I'm a huge fan but with the university in town forget going when school is in any night of the week. The place is unbelievable undersized. They could expand to the businesses on both sides and still be busy. Apart from the fact that you can't get in when they are at capacity you can't even get in to the retail portion to buy a bottle to take home - that's unforgivable. I'm sure the city code dictates how many people can come in but they have to address that soon or risk continuing to piss off customers with $$ that want to buy the higher end products. I was prepared to drop about $60 on a few sour ales but they wouldn't let me in. 5 stars if you are lucky enough to get in; 0 stars if you are turned away. read more

With a great assortment of limited, hard to find, one-off barrel aged stouts and sours, and tall cans of IPAs you can mix and match, it's hard not to leave with a handful of choice beers. Seating is limited, but I personally like that about the Beer Shoppe. It's got a laid back vibe and is perfect for a day time beer or two, when you actually want to have a conversation with the person you're with. It's not overwhelmingly noisy, either, even if a game is on. Bonus: you can bring in food from any of the spots nearby and have your beer of choice with it. We ordered three beers and finished them (they have very few stouts)... sat out by Woodstock's and ordered a pizza.-my daughter came late- saw us, ordered a beer and came and joined us. No sooner did she sit down and the "maybe bartender-no one that helped her" came rushing over in an accelerated loud voice - "you are NOT allowed to take beers out of our area- therefore we will not serve you again..." huh? I March inside to say-could you have given us a warning-I am sorry we do not live here. He said SHAME on you. We have been to the Davis beer shoppe quite a few times but this may be our last. We went there today while waiting for our to go food from another place and had our dog with us. We were told that our dog could not be inside (when they only serve popcorn and bagged chips). We inquired about the other dog that was inside and we were told that was a, "service dog and the owners girlfriend's dog". Maybe our dog is a service dog? Beer lovers, rejoice. This is one of the best selections of beer on tap or off the shelf in the region. Even better, it's a bar as well where you can sample and imbibe to your heart's content while plotting your next beverage. For anyone who likes beer or wants to learn more about it from some knowledgeable folks, this is the place to go. It's also a far cry better than some of the other typical college bars in the immediate vicinity. But be forewarned, this is a college town, so don't expect a chill atmosphere where you can talk about hops and grains. At the peak of a Saturday night it can be a raucous tavern. Still, the employees are helpful and will gladly let you try before you taste. I seem to recall most of the beers as being regional, but my recollection is understandably hazy. Although I can understand the legal reasons, it was a bit odd for us all to continually be reminded to stand on one side of the bar to drink, leaving the other area open as just a shop. We weren't disobeying those rules but it became rather difficult as the place became more crowded. Whatever the case, you won't find a finer selection anywhere nearby. This place is great! I wanted to shed some light on the most recent 1 Star review from the individual (D.M), whom obviously does not understand the concept of the $2 corkage. The Davis Beer Shoppe has a section of their facility which is for retail purchase of bottled beer to take home with you, just like any other store. This section of the store has their prices very much in line with normal retail prices for any other store, but does not include any up charge much like a restaurant would if you were to order a bottled beer from the restaurant's menu and drink it there. So, if you happen to find a beer that you would like to drink there, from the retail section, you simply pay an extremely fair corkage fee of $2 to enjoy your beer at their facility. This total price including the corkage, is almost always guaranteed to be less than any other establishment that serves drinks. Simple minded complaints like that can be harmful to a business. Make no mistake, The Davis Beer Shoppe is a great place, extremely fair, and is by no means shady. If you don't like paying a small fee for service and a good environment, drink at home. :) read more

I recently fell in love with Timmermans Strawberry beer while I was having dinner at Yard House with the bf. Ever since then, I've been going around to different bevmo's around the bay to look for this beer. I've even been to like random beer/ liquor store looking for it.. But had no luck at all. So I went on yelp and search for beer/ wine around Davis and this shop came up. I never knew such store existed in Davis, I actually dropped by on Monday night to see if they had some. But when I came by, it was around 10PM and it looked like they were closing already and I also saw people drinking in there so I didn't think they will be selling beers that I can actually take home. I guess I can be really blind at night, cause there were like shelves and fridges filled with different beer bottles today when I came in. So I was really desperate for some of the Timmerman's strawberry beer yesterday and really don't feel like driving 2 hour back to San Jose to go get some. I called in and some guy picked up.. Forgot his name.. But he's like my savior now. I asked him if they had any of the Timmerman's Strawberry and he said he will look for me. Then a minute later, he told me that they were out of it but if I want, they can order it for me which was so nice of them. So then he told me that he'll call me back after he searched how much it would be for a bottle and stuff. Within 5 minutes, I received a call back from him saying that they'll have a shipment in tomorrow( which is today) and it was $4.99 a bottle. That just made my day! So today I was so excited, that I made the bf took me here right after he was done with his stuff to get me 4 bottles. I really wanted to buy the whole case, but it'll be too much. I though to myself that I can always come back to get more though, hopefully they'll be stocked. I can't wait to enjoy it tonight with my steak dinner! Overall, I think this place is just great! Not just because they have my new found love of beer, but they just really have superb customer service. I feel bad forgetting the name of the guy who helped me though, but I really hope this establishment stays in Davis for a long time and does well cause they really do deserve it. I checked out the place today, it looks really neat inside, they carry many different kind of beer... I will be back to try some. They have some seats/ tables where you can enjoy your beer too. I came here around 1 today, and there were like 3-4 people in there having a cup of beer already.. A bit too early don't you think? Really surprised with reading some of the other Yelper's nasty reviews. I had great service at this tasting room with fantastic all around information given to me for each beer that I tried. When I arrived there was several different types of target consumers here, nothing particularly jumped at me that the employees were wanna be "suspender wearing Mumfors & Sons." They were wearing average street clothes that spoke to me with the same degree of interest in the brewing. & honestly, The Davis Beer Shoppe is just like any other liquor store - I'm pretty sure they'd want to keep their liquor license especially on picnic day rather than jeopardize their bushiness over selling to some person that walked in with a bunch of minors. read more

We were in Davis for their Picnic day. Originally, we wanted to try Cafe Bernardo to get a wiki whacky woo but it was too crowded with overly drunk people. Mellow it out at Davis Beer Shoppe! We came and there was a slight wait, not too bad. We ordered our beers quick. First round of bottled allagash white. Second round the tangerine wheat on tap. I just have to rave at how good it was. Amazing. Tangy. Light. Seriously it was the perfect beer that day. We wanted another round but it was out! So sad. There is a lot standing room and some sitting. Just enjoy it, chill out with friends. Ask to try the beers since they have quite a selection. Another plus, the prices were unbeatable. Super cheap. Compared to beer down here... totally baffled me. Service was top-notch. This place is comparable to Pangaea Two Brews Cafe. Although The Davis Beer Shoppe has hundreds of bottled beers for sale and only serve beer. They have 6 beers on tap (I forgot what they were...). The tasting area (I did not drink that day - just wanted to stop by) looked cozy.
