We walked in and was warmly greeted by the manger Jared at the bar. Our daughter asked if we order at the bar or at the table, he let us know that he would come out and take our order. He let us know that happen to have a vintage 2018, 2019 & 2021 red wine flight for $30, we did the wine flight while hubby got the draft beer. We also decided to get a light appetizer to go with our drinks that night we got the pita bread with the warm hummus, everything is made in house and everything was so delicious. So good you almost wanna lick the plate. Our daughter walked around to take a look at the collection that they had on the wall where you can buy bottles there, Jared personally, came out to answer any question that she had about the wines and he was very knowledgable about it all. As we sat there and enjoyed our evening together, we saw all sorts of people trickle in, sit down and have drinks and food and just talk. The ambiance is very relaxed and very chill. It's so nice to know that a cool place like this exist in Davis. We will definitely be back next time with more friends and family. We enjoyed ourselves very much and it is so lovely that it has so many cute gifts and trinkets to buy for that wine enthusiast in your life. Fantastic wine selection and menu - I have tried the rose, the Pinot Grigio and the petit Syrah blend. They also have a nice selection of beers - including local options! This place is so cool! I wish I had the opportunity to go more often when I still lived in Davis. As expected, there is wine everywhere, and food options to order as well. My group opted to order what we wanted by the glass, and the gal that helped us out was extremely informative. She helped each of us choose a wine that suited our preference, and I think she was spot on for everyone. After dinner in downtown, we stopped by for a glass of dessert wine. Davis is known for its viticulture and oenology, but there are not many places in downtown that offer a variety of wines. This place offers wine by the glass, or you can buy a bottle and drink it inside ($10 corkage fee). Although we did not try, they also have snacks to go with the wine. This place may not be perfect (need comfy couches), but they've been doing a good job and I hope they continue to offer wine downtown Davis. I want to like this place. The idea of a wine tasting/bar downtown is great. We were excited to go to Davis Wine (we hadn't been since the Vini days), especially after Covid reopening. Unfortunately, it was quite a disappointment. As others have said, the tasting pours are largely gone (and apparently, now they charge a fee if more than one person uses a tasting card, which makes no sense although we did not taste and I'm basing this on another review). We paid $48 for a bottle of sparking rose and truffle chips. The wine was fine (didn't stand out in any way), and the price for chips ($6) seems high, but oh well. What bugged us is a $10 corkage fee(!) for drinking the wine we just purchased! I've never seen a corkage fee for wine purchased in-house (it's always been for wine you bring in from outside). I called the owner today to ask, and although he said there are signs about the corkage fee, we did not see any. Other reviewers also missed whatever signs were placed, since they were also surprised by the corkage fee. The owner explained, oddly, that the corkage fee is to cover the cost of service, meaning opening the bottle (lol) and bringing out glasses. Um....isn't that what your employees are paid to do? How in the heck does it make sense to charge an additional fee -- for wine purchased in-house -- to account for an employee bringing out two glasses and opening the bottle? I'd happily grab my own glasses and spend 5 seconds opening the bottle, to avoid such a silly and ridiculous fee. At no point did the employee mention the corkage fee until she brought the bill. When we asked about it, she shrugged and said (paraphrased)," That's just how we do it." Bottom-line: Wine was OK, nothing special. $10 corkage fee for in-house bottles, to apparently compensate the employee for doing his/her job. read more

When Vini closed, I was devastated as it was really the only place in town to go drink wine in a casual, non-restaurant setting. Plus, their pour-your-own machines were so novel and fun to use. So, when I realized that Davis Wine had opened I was STOKED to try it! Upon walking in, it's immediately clear that they got rid of the vast majority of the stations to "pour-your-own." That said, they did maintain a few of those stations and treat it as a tasting wall, and rather than each wine pour having a specific cost, there is a set price for a set number of tastes. I really, really love that they kept that part of the former business. Other than that, they have a giant selection of wine to buy by the bottle and a decent amount of beers of tap, and wines by the glass. We always go for a whole bottle because the bottle prices are SO reasonable. There is a $10 corkage fee but the bottles are priced so low, that it's more than worth it. For reference, we're wine club members at a winery who sells wine in this store, and the bottle price in store isn't very far off from what we pay as wine club members. So, even with the corkage fee, it's a steal. They also offer "light" bites. Though, we got the biggest board they offer, with alllll the cheese and meats and there was nothing light about it. The portions are HUGE and, honestly, we loved it. I think the portion sizes have decreased a little as they've gotten their footing, but it is still a great deal for what you're paying. Honestly, I think Davis Wine is such a great addition to downtown Davis and I'm so glad it's here! read more

First time back since the reopening from Vini, the immediate thing one notices are the changes in the interior decor. They removed all the couch like booths and low tables, and replaced them all with high tops and bar stools. It doesn't look as relaxing anymore, and it's certainly not very ADA friendly. They also changed all the wall decor, and it looks much less classy European wine bar and much more like the owner has a thing for brightly painted anything. The reloading and usage of the self-pour system is the same, however ever other aspect has changed. Now you must buy a flight of tastings starting at $20, instead of being able to reload whatever amount you wanted to before. Also, they now charge an extra $5 if you want to share your card with another person. Before if you were coming with somebody else, you could share the same card without incurring an extra charge. Now every pour is $4, instead of before where they had many choices below $4 and some above $4, which allowed you to try more expensive ones. It's now mediocre ones across the board. They also lazily left the self-pour instruction signs up with the Vini information, and left the Vini name in the electronic display. What they did remove was the more useful information about the wine including a lengthier description and price per bottle. They removed the three free standing self-pour stations, and reduced the amount of the ones built into the wall by half, leaving only one set for a limited amount of whites and one for a limited amount of reds. I understand the business decision was to switch to more bottle sales...but you can walk into any grocery store or liquor mart or big box store and buy bottles. You can walk into practically any sit down restaurant and order a glass of wine. There was (and still is) only one place in Davis doing self-pour wine (or any self-pour alcohol at all). We went on a Wednesday night, got there shortly after 9:30, and noted that the hours posted next to the door said they close at 11. At around 10:05, the owner (?) turned the closed sign and locked the front doors. About 20 minutes later, we were the only customers left in the store. The owner told us from across the store that it was time to finish up and head home. We left the store at about 10:30, way earlier than their posted close time. One positive new thing is that there is now a much larger selection (thanks to getting rid of most of the self-pour stations) of bottled wine, and the prices are very reasonable and even cheap. What was confusing to me were the numbers scrawled in a White-Out-esque paint across the bottles. At first I thought the bottles had been numbered and corresponded to a pricing sheet, but after failing to locate a pricing sheet and noticing some of the numbers were the same, I realized that they were in fact prices. It didn't help they didn't put dollar signs before the numbers on the bottle. In my opinion the white paint made the bottles appear a bit tacky, and it looks like they built their wine rack from leftover shipping pallets. read more

She told me they closed soon and to go get a table outside, so I waited outside for 10 min while she walked around inside. I finally got up and ordered a glass of wine and charcuterie board but because it was 2 minutes after 9 she said the kitchen was closed. Very disappointing and we ended up going elsewhere for a snack to eat. She was obviously not interested in helping customers and wanted to go home early. I've always loved having a wine bar downtown, but with the new owners came a different look & feel, with different furniture that I really dislike. Previously there were comfortable but stylish modern booths and a jazz vibe decor. Now the seating is exclusively high, hard stools around high cocktail tables. The stools are uncomfortable & the new look is really generic and less classy. I still love the automatic wine tasting dispensers, the variety of wines, the food menu- cheeses & small plates, but I sure hope they improve the seating. read more
