Our first time & maybe not our last. My wife was worried about the parking situation so we left early for this beautiful venue. There was a parking structure across the street. The venue itself opens one hour prior to the performance. But inside seating isn't available until thirty minutes before the event. There were refreshments for sale. Restrooms conveniently stationed next to our seats. Luckily our seats were in the orchestra area. My wife loved her aisle seat. We were seated second row from the front. There was no intermission so the Ledisi's performance lasted for a good ninety minutes. Her voice to hear in person was truly a blessing. All I can say is WOW! She sang for Dinah & she's so talented. Her jazzy, bluesy r/b soul vocals were incredible. We were so happy to experience it in person. Ledisi has such a cute personality on top of it all too. Such a quintessential beauty! And Truly a night to remember! By the way they specifically asked for no photography & the employees there WILL ask you to stop. Just sit back, relax & take in the concert! You will ENJOY!

Nice interiors and simple concessions, friendly ushers, great acoustics. Parking isn't great because it is a little confusing.

I've been a bit of a stranger to the Mondavi Center at UC Davis, but last night I attended a performance by Samara Joy on the Jackson Hall stage on October 4, 2023. During my undergrad years, I definitely took full advantage of the Student Discount Pricing and recall attending American Bach Soloists baroque performances, Patricia Barber, SFJAZZ Collective, Branford Marsalis, soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Boccatango, HellaCapella, Handel's Messiah, etc. For Samara Joy, student pricing started at $12.50, what a steal! They do have discounts for UC Davis Faculty/Staff, Active Military, non-UC Davis Students, UC Davis Students, and Youth (Under 18). Groups of 10 or more get seats at 10% off, UC Davis employees get 10-25% off, Youth always save 50%, Subscribers get up to 15% off, UC Davis students get 50% off, and non-UC Davis students get 25% off. Disappointingly for me, even as a Life Member of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, I qualify for Regular pricing. Save $2 by purchasing parking in advance ($14 versus $16 on the day of the event). I parked in the main parking structure nearest the Mondavi Center and the Manetti Shrem Art Museum and Mondavi Food & Wine Institute, although depending on which parking level you're on, it could take at least 10 minutes to exit the garage during major events. There are also a few open parking lots adjacent to the garage for making an easier escape. It wasn't too bad for me leaving after 9pm, but do take into consideration if school is in session, if the Art Museum is open/closed, or if other events are happening at the Alumni Center or the Food & Wine Institute. If you are part of Aggie Uncorked, they had a separate lounge/area before the show started on the second floor. Doors opened 30 minutes before the show, and the venue/lobby opened one hour before the performance. Box office was open for day-of purchases, limited tickets. Bathrooms were plenty and clean, they also had a bag/coat check, elevators and ramps too. Information booth right by the main entrance, lots of volunteer ushers to scan your ticket for entry. No security check of my purse, but I'm not sure if there is a bag policy regarding size. Masks and hand sanitizer still provided if preferred. Ushers were very helpful in helping direct me to my seat (mobile ticket didn't list which door to enter once you were at the correct level), although some folks I did see playing musical chairs (wrong section versus box seats). The Interim Executive Director of Mondavi Arts spoke at the beginning of the event, and also gave a verbal Land Acknowledgement to show respect/awareness to the indigenous people such as Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation, thanked sponsors Capital Public Radio, UC Davis Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, UC Davis Global Affairs, Fisher Family Fund, and shouted out to the Center for African Diaspora Student Success as well. Samara Joy is a 2023 Grammy-winning Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Artist with her 2nd album, "Linger Awhile." She's only 23 years old! If you haven't heard her sing, do check it out. Such a soulful, velvety voice. She sang some of the songs a capella at the start and you could really hear her raw, emotional delivery -- truly visceral, where as a listener it makes you go audibly "so good!" The live performance included her band with a piano, bass, drums, trombone, trumpet, alto sax, and saxophone -- and some of the pieces in the program were arranged by certain band members. Samara's show ran for 90 minutes with no intermission, and included a Q&A session at the end and signing of merchandise in the lobby too (not sure if they also had photo ops at the backdrop). Great, great acoustics! I sat in the Grand Tier this time, no complaints whatsoever. I didn't avail of concessions but noticed there are no cupholders inside so maybe they're only allowed in the lobby space/outdoor balconies. Overall, I had a great solo evening outing back in my college town. I know jazz isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I'll be back next month to catch the screening of Pixar's "Coco" Live-to-Film Concert featuring Orquesta Folclórico Nacional de México.

No one should be reviewing this place with any sort of arts experience, correct? Right now, it's a COVID-19 testing facility and they have it down to an art. Instead of scraping your brain (via nostrils) they have you swish a teeny amount of water in your mouth and spit it through a tube in to the vial. I received a text message before the test reminding me to not consume ("eat, drink, smoke, vape or chew gum") for at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment. To make the check-in process rather quick, have the QR code they email you when you register for the test available. A quick scan of that made my entire visit less than five minutes long because there was no line due to scheduling. It'll be nice when they hold performances in there but for now, it works as a testing facility.

"AN EXQUISITE VENUE FOR ENJOYING PERFORMANCES IN THE ARTS!" SIT REP Early birthday celebration, and my sweet friend Amanda and I head to the MONDAVI CENTER at UCDavis to see "TANGO FIRE". THE SET-UP A wonderful venue set up like an opera house where the acoustics are magnificent and the visual architectural and interior decor are quite sumptious and beautiful. They allowed patrons to go onto the stage - which was set up like an ARGENTINIAN CAFE - BEFORE the performance in fact so that couples could dance to the Tango music. THE PERFORMANCE The dancers were mesmerizing and magnificent! Five (5) couples danced through a century's worth of Tango-styles and elegance. Some of it reflecting quieter times, some of it reflecting the brutal military junta and dictatorships, all of it a breath-taking lesson in to the history and power of the Dance of Tango and how it STILL is reflective of the human spirit for all ages. The couple that included the blonde, were absolutely amazing. There was a lot of power in the way she was vaulted into the air and spun around, and in the way their one particular dance was ethereal and spiritual. I loved this demonstration most of all. THE MUSICIANS My god! This is probably the most amazing LIVE quartet of musicians I have had the pleasure of hearing! A FIDDLER. An ACCORDIANIST. A PIANIST. And a stand-up BASS. I've never heard so much talent (and VOLUME) come from just 4 guys! THE LOWDOWN If you ever get a chance to see this performance in the future, by all means do so! You'll see me there again too!

Come quick....I Got The SHAKES! After watching the Grammy's this year I decided that I needed to see the Alabama Shakes live, low and behold a chance came a knockin at the Mondavi Center in Davis. Im almost positive this place was pretty fab, but I could barely see it because they had the fog machine on blast way before the performers got on stage. The show started with this band called The Tumbleweeds( thier name truly fits) and they got the crowd warmed up for the next act named Michael Kiwanuka. I thought I might be bored at this point, but I was amazingly surprised by his skills( and his backup guitarist..cutie!) O.M.G...you better.."HOLD ON"..to your seat that is..cause once Brittany Howard hit that stage it was like a volcano erupted. One big power house voice accompanied by the accoustics provided by the performance center was out of this world. No one could sit down even if they had tried. I would love to see other bands perform here...it was a great night.

UC Davis' beautiful new performing arts center. It's that beautiful building that can be seen from highway 80. Is opened up as a study space during finals week.

A Taste of Davis presented by the Mondavi Wine Institute at UC Davis, CA. Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Great outdoor setting with food, wine, and beer from local businesses. The red wines of the Sierra foothills wineries are competitive with those of any other area of California. I spend the two hours sipping and enjoying mostly zinfandels from the region. I will now have to add a visit of the region to my agenda in 2018. Very few whites were available, so that left me little room to try my favorites. I did sample a Sauvignon Blanc which was surprisingly pleasant and refreshing. As fanatic as I am about craft beers, I did not try any. The food was a Taste" of local restaurants in the Davis, CA area and they always seem to take the opportunity to let you sample some of their more popular dishes. A "Taste" it was and the wines made the food even better, and the food made the wines more special as well. Fun evening, can't wait until the next one. From there we made our way to the Mondavi Concert hall for a self-tour of the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art to view the John Cage exhibit and Dimensions of Black, a collaborative exhibition from San Diego, Ca. Finally to cap of the night we had tickets to the hear some very talented musician at the Mondavi Center. for the next 2 hours we enjoyed the music of DeJohnette, Grenadier, Medeski, and Scofield, a group better know as "Hudson". Very talented musicians displaying their interpretations of songs by Jimi Hendrix, and others of the Woodstock Festival and some originals from Hudson. These 3 venues were within 2-4 min. of each other. A very special evening.

Not only are all the actors students, but the artistic staff are also comprised of students and recent alumni. I have seen their productions of the play 'Spring Awakening' as well as the rock opera musical 'Rent'. I was impressed by the caliber of acting talent in 'Spring Awakening' -- their performance evoked a lot of emotion in a very challenging play. Before seeing 'Rent' I was dubious that a student group would be able to pull off an intense rock musical, but they did a great job. The theater itself is very unique -- Wyatt Pavillion used to be a barn -- so the director has to be particularly creative with the space. The front half of the stage is surrounded by the audience, and there is a tall platform that actors can access from backstage or by employing a ladder. The blocking (staging, in actor speak) was well-done, especially in 'Rent', which demands several different spaces for all the stories going on in the show at once. The student group takes on the challenges of each show and owns them. Mad props! They will all be fantastic when they move beyond college theater into the world of professional theater. TIP: Good theater always makes for an awesome date night.

(http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wyatt-pavillion-davis?select=3bB22cpFBl0iPFGH40O97g#YBOoUGak_3Io_Q-WotRl8A) Parking is aplenty in the two lots just off Old Davis Drive. Inside, the theater grants a unique experience. The seats surround the stage on 3 sides, granting the audience a deeper perspective. This view seems to encourage the actors to take their performances to the next level, as they have to be conscious of their expressions and actions from all angles. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wyatt-pavillion-davis?select=3bB22cpFBl0iPFGH40O97g#c6SybqnrQ2TPjODc-sufdQ) This past weekend I had the pleasure of watching my good friend in the title role of Richard III, which was a product of the UC Davis Theatre Department's "Shakespeare on a Shoestring" project. The final battle scene is viewable from all seats in the audience. This photo captures the intensity of the play, which incorporated modern 'urban' costume elements and lots of rhythm. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wyatt-pavillion-davis?select=3bB22cpFBl0iPFGH40O97g#hjwRqQoFqbtJmTaquTCxdA) I have seen several productions done here by both the student-directed group 301 Productions and the UC Davis Theatre Department, and have been impressed by the choices the directors have made using the stage. They creatively utilized all spaces, including a raised platform about 10 feet high at the back of the stage and staircases that lead up to this platform and offstage. The only downsides: 1. The pillars of death, should you be so unlucky to sit behind them. (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/wyatt-pavillion-davis?select=3bB22cpFBl0iPFGH40O97g#s6SxsqV9uZjTEbufk-wzDg) 2. The horrible back-beating seats. The cushion doesn't quite reach the back of the chair, so you either have to slouch down so your butt lines up with the cushion, --OR-- force your butt into the crack at the back of the cushion. Which would you prefer? 3. There is no food within quick walking distance. If you're making a 2 - 2.5 hour commitment to watch a show, definitely bring some food! During intermission I inhaled a bag of chips like a voracious raccoon. Despite these setbacks, the shows have been incredible. Overall, Wyatt Pavilion creates an intimate theater experience that can't be missed!

There is a lot of walking involved. This is the place to rack up Fitbit steps. Many students ride their bikes around campus, and there are many bike circles (roundabouts) at intersections to help keep traffic flowing smoothly. I think everyone should come here to learn how to manœuvre around a roundabout (especially people who shop at Costco Santa Clara because they can not figure out the new roundabout they installed in the parking lot). The campus has changed quite a bit over the decades. There are many new buildings, and many old ones being demolished. There is a large new visitor parking lot and a nice Visitor Center near it. The visitor center is a good place to grab a map and make a comfort stop before exploring the campus. You can also schedule a tour before you arrive. There is a mini gift shop at the Visitor Center. I suggest going to the store at the MU for a larger selection of gifts and souvenirs. Check out the arboretum (near the Visitor Center) if you have time. The Memorial Union is the center of the universe. You'll find student services, a place to pick up or return Amazon packages, the bookstore/gift shop, the game room (it's downstairs; has bowling, billiards and gaming computers), and most importantly food and coffee. Another place to find food is at the Silo, where there are some food vendors indoors and food trucks outdoors. We visited various dorm buildings on campus and also off campus housing. We even saw cows near Tercero (dorm). And also checked out downtown Davis, which is no longer the "sleepy" downtown I remembered it to be decades ago. There's definitely a wider variety of restaurants in Davis today. Trader Joe's is near campus, how cool is that? The Chem 194 building (large lecture hall) has been renamed to Rock Hall. The steps out front leading up to the front doors seem much shallower than I remembered them to be. In my mind, the steps were more numerous, similar to the steps in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (think: Rocky movie). Ok, my memory must be fuzzy, after all, it was a long time ago since I was an undergrad here.... This would be a good place to go for the college town experience, with the pleasant side effect of graduating with a decent education... but does this really matter? How many of us go on to do something that is related to what we studied in college? It's more about the journey, the experiences we have and the people we meet along the way. .
