Having been in Davis for about 6 years and seeing businesses come and go, The Davis Beer Shoppe is by far the best place to emerge. Taylor, the owner, is very knowledgeable about the beers he sells. Service was top-notch. This place is comparable to Pangaea Two Brews Cafe. Although The Davis Beer Shoppe has hundreds of bottled beers for sale and only serve beer. They have 6 beers on tap (I forgot what they were...). The tasting area (I did not drink that day - just wanted to stop by) looked cozy. It was 6:30 p.m. on a Wednesday and there were barely any seats open. I'll be back tomorrow, though. To drink. I bought a bunch of Russian River Consecration and Pliny the Elder. Awesome beer shoppe, my friends and I always come here when we want some beers. This is usually our first stop before we go to other places. When you walk in the counter is to your right. Usually they check everyone's ID first before you can start ordering. They have a chalk board menu full of drinks that change every week. If you can't see the board, they also have a menu on their tablets that show the information of the beer and the cost. Each beer is about $7-$10 I think it depends on what you get which is the usual average price considering it's all on taps. Behind the bar counter they also have a small shop full of other beers if you can't get one you like on the bar. I love this place because they give samples and I'm more under cider beers then IPAs so trying new things is great! Owner is nice also! Greeted us on the way in and on the way out. Even as a person that doesn't drink beer (I drink cider!) I love it here. There always have a great selection on tap, always including at least one cider, and huge collection of bottled and canned beers and ciders. They always update their selection of Facebook so if you look it up in advance you can know what will be available. Moreover, I always go with people who DO love beer and they always have a great time. My favorite offering that they almost always have a flight you can do to get a little taste of everything. This place rocks! Too bad that it caters to only a few since their capacity is small. One has to wait in a long line just to get in. The clear glass wall doesn't help suppress your drools and cravings for beer. I had a great time when I first visited Davis Beer Shoppe. Excellent customer service. It was past 10pm when we arrived and we informed the cashier that it was my first time to be there, and tasting their different brews was my infinite plan. However, I was not aware that they had a time limit for tasting, and that was at 9pm. But, they stretched out their greatness with me and tried very hard to get me one set of tasting. It was all about chocolate and beer! I was so happy with their Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Caldera Mogli. Yum yum yum! Unfortunately, they do not sell food to go with their liquor. Since I'm a beer guy this joint is a haven to me. They pretty much serve beer from everywhere and your palette has the opportunity to be stimulated in ways you never thought. Currently I'm into really sour beers (balsamic vinegar status) so I'd recommend something like the Rodenbach. The servers seem knowledgable so just tell them what you like if you're really unsure what to get. Anyway, the prices are fair. I don't like how they charge corkage fees if you buy a bottled beer to drink there. With that said, I'd recommend only buying beer on tap and if you're really inclined in trying something in a bottle, just buy it to drink elsewhere. I mean, you really should only buy beer on tap anyway from any drinking establishment because bottling/canning/etc. can kill the intended taste from the brewery. I wandered in one day but sadly had no time to stop for a taste! :( I never really started enjoying beer until after college, maybe I would have caught on sooner if this place opened a year or so earlier! Despite taking Intro to Brewing Beer with the infamous/hilarious Professor Bamforth, I couldn't really relate to his amazing descriptions without tasting such perfection for myself; and typical college student beers only include different varieties of Budweiser and what not. Came here with a study buddy on a Sunday and we managed to snag a lovely table. Whipped out our laptop and IPads to work on papers while sipping on some nice hard apple and raspberry cider - all while not getting buzzed or drunk. I briefly spoke to the bartender about how I wanted something on par with YardHouse's hard raspberry cider and he hooked me up with something super close, if not better than YardHouse's hard cider! Unfortunately, though, I forgot the brandname of the ciders we got, but it was super affordable. Less than 3$ a bottle! This place is super cute, although a tad small. There are barrels that serve as mini tables to put your drinks on. So many different beer and cider selections, its like a library full of them! Came here last weekend after seeing they had flights on yelp. I am a big fan of cider so I wanted to try their cider flights, unfortunately, they were only do beer flights that night. BOO ): Anyway, the Davis Beer Shoppe has tons of beer.. It was really cool how they charge you one bottle/can instead of the whole 6 packs if you wanted to try the beer out. I'm crazy about this place after one visit! I walked in and stared in awe at the dozens and dozens of bottles listed on the board, and at the huge wall of 6-ers and single bottles for sale. I may have heard trumpeting and angels singing, such was my happiness. This really is the kind of place that everyone could enjoy, though. I would be happy to be brought on a date here (although that makes sense since beer is my one true love), but would come with friends to get pickled on a Friday night. There are hard-to-find fancy shmancy beers that cost a pretty penny, and also inexpensive ones of various kinds. The atmosphere is more upscale than the other bars in town that I've been to, but that's saying pretty much nothing at all... right? The bartenders are all friendly and professional, and are great at recommendations. Just see if you can stump them. The only complaint is that the seating area where you can drink (part of the establishment is drink-in, the other part take-to-drink-at-home) is TINY. Didn't they know that Davis needed a place like this and people would flock to it like the psychotic gangs of crows that haunt Hutchison Drive? It's kind of cool - I did an optometry internship during my last year of UC Davis and got to meet the owner. He went in for an eye check up and told me to check out the Beer Shoppe when it opened in a few months. And I finally did! The shop has a really cool vibe, with seating in the front, the bar in the middle, and shelves after shelves of beer in the back. There's also a huge refrigerator full of beer selection.. it's basically beer heaven. The bartender was really helpful and friendly in helping me choose which beer I wanted to try. My boyfriend said they had a low tap selections for a beer shop, but since I don't know too much about beer, I couldn't complain about that! The beers are relatively cheap, so that was nice. They also have "tasting hours," so you can go and get flights of beer for about $8 to try. This is a pretty nice place to chill at. With its cozy and welcoming ambiance, to its knowledgeable bartenders and its extensive selection of beers both on tap and on the shelves, Beer Shoppe is somewhere I always look forward to going to. It's definitely different from the typical college bars you'll find in Davis that are often overly loud and lack the cozy and low-key atmosphere of Beer Shoppe. Seating is somewhat limited, though you can stand at the bar or around two large barrels up front. The shop's small size is what lends to its charm, so while I don't see the limited seating as a huge drawback, I would recommend getting here earlier in the evening/night to avoid having to stand if you're hoping to sit somewhere. This is definitely a unique concept, so I applaud them for that. I'm totally not a beer guy, but I was out with someone who was, so I followed him here when I was in the area on business a couple months back, and I will say, it's a pretty neat place. They have tons of obscure beer, including cider, etc, for a reasonable price, then for a dollar, you can drink whatever you pick out there, in the bar area. I tried a fancy cider for like 10 bucks (plus a dollar to drink it there), which felt a bit overpriced at first, until I realized that it was two full glasses, so that'd still be a great price compared to going to a bar. My only real complaint was that their "drink it here" space was pretty tiny, and therefore, quite packed. It could have used a bit more space. Still fun though. read more

I order some raspberry cider, although I didn't know what the name of the beer was. The bartender/server were really knowledgeable about their selection of different types of alcohol. Just asked they what you want , and they'll be able to help you find a suitable alcohol for you! The only thing I didn't like was that the shop itself is pretty same. There isn't outdoor seating and the constricted area they make you stand or sit is quite small. So its hard for a large group of people to hangout there, unless you're under 4 people. This is one of the best tap rooms and bottle shops that I've ever been to. Their selection of beers on draft numbers over two dozen and their bottle selection is superb. You can drink any of the bottles in house for an extra dollar. Jocelyn and Phil are great beer tenders and they know their stuff. I arrived here on a Saturday night with my girlfriend to find that the Beer shoppe is completely crowded. Despite this I was able to manage to get myself two drinks. When I order the drink the bartender said he was busy and will be with me in a moment. He then proceed to go have a casual chat with another customer. Despite this, I still politely waited for my drink....still nothing. Finally after a good ten minutes I was finally greeted (more like granted) with the honor of being able to order a drink. By the time I had both drinks in hand, my girlfriend found us a spot to sit. The atmosphere was nice enough to stay for a good hour, but by the time we had left we decided to grab a few beers for the house. When we brought everything up to the register, I had my cash and ID ready and the cashier asked to see both of our ID's. My girlfriend (who is 25 years old) had forgotten her wallet. Even though I had everything to purchase the beer they still denied me, saying I could be selling to a minor. I understand protecting your business but this is sheer paranoid. Anytime we go to BevMo, Nugget, this is never the case. Fortunately this is the last time I will ever spend my money at this store. If you want to deal with lazy, inattentive service and a paranoid staff go here! Personally I'd rather spend my money at any other location. I could go down the street to Deveres, Burgers and Brew, or UoB and get treated way better with less trouble. read more

I have worked with craft beer and been in the brewery industry for about a decade, have a cicerone and have yet to be provided recommendations or conversations about the selection at Davis Beer Shoppe that are helpful or kind. They carried beer from my partner's brewery (IPAs specifically) that were well past a date they should've been sold to the public as we knew the exact date the style was canned (of course also printed on the can). This is a nostalgia review. A review about what the Davis beer shop was, and is today. I attended UC Davis in 2014. I visited the beer shop on late nights, mid afternoons, and after a long picnic days. The beer shop is where I fell in love with beer. Where I learned about new types and styles of beers. I visited the shop in 2019 and now have a different take. Farther on my beer journey, the shop wasn't offering many unique pours. The bar tender offered the oh so common Knee Deep and Oscar Blues. While the beers aren't unique, they are cheap. Five dollars a pint for the standard stuff, and 9 dollars for Mikeller. Overall my perspective on the beer shop has changed, but it's still worth 5 stars. read more

I have been coming to the Davis Beer Shoppe for 4 years, ever since my daughter started at UC Davis. Never have I run into a situation like I did today, and because of that I have spent my last dollar at this establishment. There was a line to get into the tasting room, however I was simply purchasing beer to bring back to my hotel. My oldest, 22, had left her ID in her car. My youngest was with us and would have been declined access simply because of her age - Only on Picnic Day. I have been into this establishment many times with both kids as well as with my youngest who is 8, never had a problem before, but again this is picnic day. The young lady at the door lets me in, my daughters literally take a seat at the curb in front of the store. After I have made my selection, a six pack of Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin and 2 22oz Kilt Lifter Scottish Ales, I am making my way to pay at the counter when the girl from the door comes in and says, "Since you came to the door with two girls who did not have their ID, and they walked away, we cannot let you purchase the beer." -- WHAT? I ask to speak to a manager, who I get and who initially refuses to give me his name, only after threatening to file a police report for being discriminated against does he give me his name, which I will not post because he is simply a powerless minion. I explain to him that my oldest is 22 and my youngest is 19 and has a condition that prevents her from being able to even drink beer. Mind you I am only buying 116 ozs of beer, not a case of keystone. He continues with he will not let me purchase the beer, even if my oldest goes and gets her ID. I ask what law I am breaking, and the manager said I was breaking no laws. So I ask why he is discriminating against me and he says because he thinks that I am buying beer for under age girls. I eventually take his name, but only after asking if I needed to have the police come down so I can file a police report for discrimination. I leave When I get outside, the girls are sitting right there, on the curb. I fully understand and appreciate the sentiment, however some times people need to not let paranoia cloud their judgement. I ended up at Whole Foods a purchased the same beer with a student discount and no troubles. Davis Beer Shoppe, you have lost my business. I'm going to be honest here. I initially hated beer. Yup... I'm so ashamed of myself. But ever since I have taken FST3, I have fallen in love with this alcoholic beverage & have gained appreciation for this carbonated wonder... and the fact that the town recently have opened this pub in the heart of Davis makes me adore beer even more! What I'm most excited about this place is that I'll finally have a chance to try all sorts of beer. They have a great selection of beer and they mix up their beer on tap quite frequently. The staff there is friendly and knowledgeable. The beer on tap, however, is a bit pricy in my opinion. The Davis Beer Shoppe is the perfect place to relax and enjoy some beer with friends. However, come here early, since there's very limited seating. My two friends and I had to wait outside for about 10 minutes since they reached max capacity at 9. I was a bit disappointed especially since they ran out of some beers on tap by then! I think this place would be even better if they could serve something small to munch on =P... and if there's more seating, but it's quite cramped as it is, unfortunately... but if you have two X chromosomes, have no fear - guys will not pester you here since they're too amazed with their beer! I love Beer, I'd put a 6th star if I could. Seriously. Huge selection of beer, super-rare, rare, semi-rare, and everyday beers can be found. Newcomers are treated very well and encouraged, regulars are made to feel at home. Wonderful environment. Fun, and filled with laughter. You'll get access to beers you love (on tap, and/or in a bottle) find/try beers you've never tried/seen. It's clean, helpful, and they'll let you bring in food of your own. Very, very helpful staff who will take the time to figure out what kind of beer you'd lean toward, if you give them the chance to do so. Sometimes it's very busy, so you might need to be a bit patient if you don't know exactly what you want, but they WILL help you. I have 2 counter points for negative reviews: One. If you're not from Davis, and you're reading these reviews, keep in mind it's a college town. You're going to read reviews that are "Shocked" and "Outraged" that they insisted on ID, or refused to serve someone because they walked in with people without ID. They face a CONSTANT stream of underage people, or people who are of age, trying to buy beer for underage people, or simply people who don't think the rules shouldn't apply to them. These same people take to yelp and love to rant about how bad the place was. It's not, it's just trying to survive the onslaught. Get over it. Two. If you see an amazing beer listed as on tap that day, others have seen that as well! Alpine Nelson doesn't last long, because EVERY SINGLE PERSON who walks in the door orders a pint, and then continues to do so, until the Keg is dead. It doesn't take long! When I moved away from Durham, NC one of the places I thought I would miss was Sam's Quik Stop (must write that review.) I was thrilled to find the Beer Shoppe. Great selection, acceptable prices, and an amazing rotation of their 7 or 8 taps (maybe 9?). In addition to the taps, they do flights (3-4 oz each of 3-5 beers) of the bottled fare. I really appreciate how they serve the tap beer in appropriate glassware, not just the imperial pints, but goblets, tulips, etc. The board will note if a pour is going to be a particularly small 8oz (usually the high alcohol contents). They have always been very nice to us. While we did get a "behind the yellow line" reminder, it didn't feel rude to me, but maybe that is because I understand how strict license boards are regarding alcohol. We also joked with them about the sign over the ADA compliant table that indicated you shouldn't sit on it and they bantered well. On a weekend, arrive early, they have a capacity of 45(?) for the tasting room and you'll be stuck outside waiting if you get there late. They reserver a few slots for retail sales, which was great when we stopped after our movie to buy beer we'd tried earlier that night. We've started a habit of getting beer before we do other things downtown, but even early it will get to standing room after the 20+ chairs fill up. It would be great if they could work with a local restaurant to get some food tidbits besides the gas station style snack foods. But I don't drop them a star, because they are not a food store, they are a beer shoppe! I've seen people bring in pizza, I assume other food would be fine. They've been updating their Facebook page with the flights and taps, and of course the Daviswiki.org site gets you all the details Yelp might not have. read more

A great place to drink good beer with some friends. They have a large selection and the service is great...they are great at suggesting beers that you might like. They also let you try a sample of the beers on tap. Downside is that the place is really small and gets really crowded. They are strict in seating and do not let others in after capacity has been reached. You actually stand in line outside and wait for others to come out. If you can find a place to stand or sit, I recommend you check it out. TIP: take a deck of cards to play with! read more

I'd like to start with, I'm a huge beer fanatic so for their selection I might give them around 4 stars (in the context of Davis not having too many places with variety) however their service... lets just say I dread when one of my friends wants to go have a beer here. I read a few of the other comments with low ratings and I can see they have experienced a weird discrimination on behalf of the staff. There is a type of person that they want here, but I really can't seem to figure it out (jk look around next time you go in, the homogeneity in their patrons is eerie). Anyhow, lets say you didn't experience the awkward unfriendly vibe from the staff, they still: Charge you a $1 for each beer you open within the facility, EVEN AFTER PURCHASING IT THERE. They already made money off of you, I don't understand...and I think its $2 for a glass. I am so glad Davis has a place like this now. It is like a dream come true. The Davis Beer Shoppe was introduced after I graduated, so all of my experiences here has been as an alum. It is a beautifully simple setup of a small group of tables, and a hall of beer. What I think I like the most about this place is the incredible selection and the always interesting list of beers on tap. This is a MUST GO TO for beer lovers. Only the Davis Co-Op will have a bottle selection that can rival The Davis Beer Shoppe. The last time I was there I also got a flight of some very interesting beers that were poured from bottles... weird... the bottles were open and left open in the refrigerators waiting for the next person to order a flight.
