love super owl! tucked away in the west davis plaza -- good variety of craft beers if that's your thing, great vibes + service, dog-friendly! trivia on thursdays is super fun and you're welcome to bring in food from the nearby restaurants :)

Spacious brewery, great service. No food, but expect to find a craft beer you'll like! My partner and I started off with a few tasters, and then ordered a flight. Gluten-tag is your typical German Hefeweizen and we loved the banana aroma. Bicycle Rights is one of their popular, award-winning Pale Ales. It's a good one to start off with and compare the rest to. Mr. J IPA is a mosaic and I was hoping for a bit of hoppiness to it. If you don't like something too hoppy, then it's worth a try. FYI, it tastes hoppier as it gets closer to room temperature. Lastly, the Don't Call Me Francis is a Belgian Dark and has a unique taste that might be more fitting for those who like whiskey. Beware: it's much stronger in ABV.

I love how Super Owl Brewery supports Fire, Flood Fighters, Police, Forest Services, National Parks, EMS, etc!

The brewmaster/owner Joe produces some flavorful beers batch after batch! They are always down to challenge the Beer norm of just producing IPAs while winning awards on Belgian Darks, Pale Ale, Milk Stout, and Saisons. Great service. Chill indoor and outdoor seating. Ask McKaila for her recommendation on beers! *You can bring food from outside. **2 unisex restrooms *** large shared parking lot ****Dogs are welcome. Children are accepted if they don't run around screaming.

Flight!

Quiet little brewery amongst a lot of apartment complexes back (anchoring?) a strip mall. We ordered a flight to get a sampling of what they have to offer. We started with the Bicycle Rights Pale Ale. Nice light beer that is a little piney but is gone as quickly as you noticed it. Second beer is a Mr. J, their IPA, good mouth feel, everything you would expect from an IPA. Next, the AKC DIPA, hazy in color and taste, this could be dangerous! Finally, Attitudes for Darkness (yes, I enjoy dark beer), drinks like a stout, @ a 10+% it will pack a punch if not careful! Nice brewery to visit if you're in the area!

Me. I really want to love this place. Maybe because of my affinity for owls, or that it is close to home and would be a great spot to hang. But the beers are just blah. They remind me of the brews my husband and I have done at home with our Mr. Beer kit and the canned recipes that it comes with. The Pilsner tastes like a pilsner, but nothing exceptional or interesting. The blonde tastes like a textbook blonde, but just isn't satisfying--too light a mouthfeel and the flavor doesn't last. They are all okay, but none have been great or memorable. We came over a year ago and felt the same way, but figured with time, maybe their recipes would develop more depth. But not yet. We will keep hoping!

We've been here a few times and we've not been disappointed. They have a very extensive selection of beer and most of it is quite good. If you like IPA, definitely check out Mr. J.. It was pretty amazing! They also had a sour which was excellent. It's a big place and it's always very clean. They have a decent size patio, but fair warning, it can get pretty sunny there in the afternoon. They did have about half of the tables in the shade yesterday. They really can't move things around much though because of the social distancing requirements. We were pleasantly surprised that we had a friendly server to bring us beer out there. They allow you to bring food in. I believe that lamppost Pizza, Next door, will deliver it to you as well. Super owl is a welcome addition to West Davis!

Mr J

Friendly to outside foods. Lamppost pizza is a solid option. Westlake plaza has a variety of food options. Rice bowl upstairs,vWestlake Market, Sushi, and frequently a taco truck in the parking lot.

Super Owl is always a great local hangout for some beer. They don't have food but you can bring your own and there are a couple of restaurants nearby to order something. They have outdoor seating also. Stop by and say hi to the friendly staff.

Wow. This place is so amazing. First off very KID friendly. I'm talking about a section where kids can look at books or play with toys and other kids. A very rare find! Meghan ( sorry if misspelled) was the most amazing bartender hostess ever. I mean she's a sweetheart!!!!! I've never met anyone more thoughtful or gracious before. Now to the beers! My husband and friend got a flight to try the grisette, IPA, udder, and LUF and absolutely loved them. I personally can't wait to come back and have some. I'm about 8 months pregnant now so I did not get the full experience ... but when those fall flavors arrive I'll be waiting and ready! I also love how they have lamppost pizza so close and you can order delivery or just grab your take out from there to bring into the brewery. Too cool. I love how accommodating and family friendly it is. It's the reason we happened upon this place in the first place! My husband didn't want to abandon me and our lil one while searching for a place to grab a quick drink to chat with our friend. If that's what you need as well come on over!

Sweet, it's not a restaurant/club! It's an actual beer place. So many places in downtown Davis turn their square footage in to dance floors at night. This one closed at 9pm last night. It got louder and we had to speak in something beyond 12 inch voices at times. Ordered a pizza from Lamppost a couple doors down, brought the number to our table and they delivered it. (to our table) Dog friendly- they had water bowls readily available. Also snack friendly- they had pretzels in a nifty dispenser. Free WiFi, password on wall. For a sweet hangout with actual parking (aka not downtown), check this place out. Bring some food or order in and sip some brews made in house. I'm coming back to try a few more of their offerings!

Awesome little brewery in Davis that we came upon before a Yelp event at Lamppost Pizza. Actually, I was looking for the boba tea place, so we weren't planning to go in, but Eric S. saw us, and said to come in and have some good beer. They've only been open for about 3 weeks. Staff was very friendly, laid back, and welcoming. They gave us samples of whatever beers we wanted to try. I like either really light beers or really dark beers, and ciders or saisons if they have them. I tried the "Fat Tony" saison, the "Looky Loo" blonde ale, and the "Ignoramus" oatmeal stout. I got a small jar ($2.50) of the rich and nutty oatmeal stout and the man got a small jar of the blonde ale, which was very smooth and refreshing. The saison was a little too sour for me. There is ample seating inside and outside, with picnic tables, bar seating, and high top tables. There's an area for the kiddos and they allow dogs on the small patio. No kitchen, but you can have pizza delivered from next door, or bring in your own food. They have board games, free self-serve pretzel sticks and water and individual packets of Annie's animal crackers for $1. Very family-friendly! Great location on the end of the strip mall, if you want a craft beer but need to chill from downtown student life.

One of our favorite spots to enjoy a beer.

We love this spot. We were given a giftcard to this spot and honestly hadn't heard of the brewery before. We decided to check it out one weekend with our pup and it quickly became one of our favorite weekend spots. The staff is always friendly, the woman who works there (sorry I haven't gotten her name) is always awesome and usually greets our dog Nala at least once during our visits. We like sitting outside with Nala where she can see what's going on and we can drink beer and play a game or two. We normally bring our own card game but they have a bunch of games to choose from as well. They also offer free pretzels which is a bonus and outside food is allowed since they don't serve food. We recently moved to the Bay Area and we haven't found a spot we enjoy visiting as much as Super Owl. We look forward to visiting on our next trip to Davis. Cheers!

It was a cold afternoon/evening in December, but we dressed warmly and stayed by the firepit. There were maybe 4-6 other clusters of people there also, and definitely another birthday party going on because the guests were singing along loudly to a special request playlist that the staff played on the speaker for them. I thought it was a good number of people considering how cold and dark it got. Our group brought a bunch of kids, and they pretty much explored the grounds the whole time -- feeding the animals, making friends with other kids, and having a blast. Food from the food truck was fine, just be careful leaving your food out unattended because some random dog gobbled our burger when we weren't looking. It's a beautiful spot. We should all be so grateful for having access to it, basically for free. Drinks were good. Good vibes. Super relaxing to be out in nature. Friendly staff. As of this review, you can reserve areas for parties/events for free, and you can bring in your own food and drinks, excluding alcohol, of course, since they are a brewery. I'm sure it gets crazy busy during the warmer months, but it is worth a visit even in the cold. Just dress right.

Though near the 80, Ruhstaller Farm is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. There's no conspicuous signage. It's easily possible to drive right by & never know what's here. & yet, the few times I've been here, generally later on a Friday or Saturday night, it's obvious that Ruhstaller Farm is the busiest place for many miles around in any direction. It's somewhat puzzling to me. Add in the idyllic bucolic vibes, & this place feels is a bit surreal to me. There's something about the frolicking farm ambiance here that reminds me of the Aliki Farms skit from the 1st episode Portlandia.* So how do I know about Ruhstaller Farm? A friend I homebrewed with for years lives in Dixon. Being beer nerds enough to brew it ourselves, we'd stumbled across Ruhstaller beers a long time ago. That early stuff was rough. The beers pouring now at Ruhstaller Farm are definitely a drastic improvement. The bar staff has always been friendly. & really, this is a nice place to relax & enjoy a beer. But that's it. I'll come through once in a while & have a beer or 2. I'm not staying. No matter how much anyone might say they'd love me to stay, & I'm absolutely not putting on a frilly dress. *https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If41cZMBgqA

While a certain amount of preferential treatment for familiar faces is simply human nature, the contrast felt greater than what could be considered good service. Maybe the Local was only for locals. More recently, on another trip staying in downtown Davis, I decided to give the Local another whirl. Pulling up a stool at the bar on a Saturday afternoon, the bartender extended a friendly greeting. Huh. Service was personable, knowledgeable, & attentive this time around. After a little conversation, I found out he was filling for the regular bartender. Huh. Well OK, then. So I got to trying some beers. They don't do taster pours/ flights here. Everything's at least 1/2 pours. The bartender informed me that they do taster pours/ flights at their brewery location in town. Just not here. Honestly, that's a bummer for me. But I had a few 1/2 pours to taste what they got. For someone who's a bit beer snobby, has far too many 1000's of beer check-ins on Untappd, & once-upon-a-time homebrewed for many years, the beers were good. Not whale-hype mind blowing. But good. Service was nice this visit. It'll be interesting to see which Dunloe Brewing I get on any possible future visit to the Local...
