This is a cute little place off of downtown Woodland. The service was pretty good. We sat ourselves down, but the severs quickly came with the menu and took our drink order. I ordered the chicken mole and was a bit disappointed with the mole. It was a bit liquidy. Not like the mole that I she order for various restaurants that I have ordered from. It was also very bland. I will say though that the chicken itself was very tender as it is chicken drumstick and wing. And the homemade tortillas was good. Will come here again and try something else bc my friend had the enchiladas with green sauce and it looked pretty good. read more

I hadn't been to El Charro in years and finally decided to stop by again. I am so glad I did because everything was even better than I remembered. I ordered the Big Plate with a taco, enchilada, and chile relleno. Every item on the plate was delicious. The chile relleno was cooked perfectly, the enchilada had great flavor, and the taco was crispy and satisfying. The homemade tortillas deserve their own shoutout. They are truly the best in town. Soft, warm, and full of that authentic flavor you can only get when someone makes them by hand. They paired perfectly with the entire meal. I also ordered a café de olla and it was amazing. Rich, aromatic, and comforting. It had that classic cinnamon and piloncillo taste that makes you feel at home. My experience at El Charro reminded me why this place has been around for so long. Great food, great flavors, and a warm, familiar atmosphere. After so many years away, it felt good to come back and enjoy a meal that exceeded my expectations. While waiting at a nearby shop for tires, we walked around and found El Charro for lunch!! We came in when it first opened and it quickly filled up with regular patrons!! That's a good sign. We were greeted and given a table right away. While looking over the menu, our waiter brought chips and salsa with waters. I had an awesome burrito. My friend had the chili relleno and tacos. It's street parking. You might have to drive around a couple of times to get the parking spot you like. Overall, a nice place to enjoy a meal with friends and family. We parked in the street, it sounded like there is parking in the rear. One guest said they parked out back, so that makes me think they have a private lot. When we waked in it was a little chilly. I put my sweater on and then it was the perfect temperature. They have 2 dining rooms. The bar dining room was warmer and dimly lit. No one was in that dining room. Both dining rooms are around the same size. Soon as we walked in we were greeted and said we could sit anywhere. We picked out a table between 2 tables full of people eating. The place was very lively and by the time we left all but one table was full. Soon as we sat down we were given chips and salsa and menus. The chips and salsa hit the spot. It was 6pm and we were hungry. We were recommend this place from our barber who has a shop down the street. She recommended 81. We were afraid that it would be too much food so we almost didn't get it, but we figured it out that the price would be the same if we both ordered a plate so we took our chances. We got number 81. It was delicious. The stone bowl it came in stayed hot and kept the food warm. I had cactus for the first time. It was very tasty. Both the steak and chicken were very tender, better then expected. The shrimp were well grilled. I wasn't sure I'd like it, but I did. I'd order it again. The only down side was the sauce was really spicy. I dipped my chicken in it and got a big scoop of the sauce and regretted it. If you don't scoop up the sauce it's just right. read more

When in woodland, this is our favorite Mexican restaurant to visit. It's the best way to support a small women owned business! Service and food are always on point. Consistency is key to this spot. The seating is traditional as well with leather equipales that hug you comfortably as you enjoy your meal. Chips and salsa are the perfect appetizers. Worst Mexican food I've ever had. We had lunch on a Friday. I got 3 tacos with ground beef. The ground beef had no seasonings so tasted like a crumbled hamburger patty, and the cheese had no flavor either. My wife had a taco salad. Her meat was the same as mine, with no flavor. No sauce. A tiny amount of guacamole. She asked for the sour cream on the side, and got none instead. I would never go there again. read more

I've been a few times for lunch and it's always delicious. But I find myself coming here for breakfast more often. Hands down the BEST Posole in Woodland. Their huevos rancheros plate (I add carnitas) is amazing with their fresh corn tortillas. The horchata is great too. There's a quite a few Mexican restaurants in town in terms of home style Mexican cuisine but I still gravitate towards El Charro. Love the way they prepare Chile Relleno and the whole combo plate. Menudo is delicious. I ordered a dish with chile relleno , enchilada and tamale. Very disappointed when I found a chewed up gum in my chile relleno. It was gross! When I called it to their attention they acted like it was no big deal. They just didn't charge me for the dish. I feel they could've done more to make up for it. Really bland. My tacos were extreme dry with very little flavor. I had to drench them in salsa. My husband's burrito tasted like the ingredients were out of a can. The service was friendly but our waitress disappeared after dropping off our food and we had to find someone to bring us a check. We sat outside and it was nice. The chips and salsa were ok. Fitting for the details on food presentation, like the CAMPECHANA (SEAFOOD, SHRIMP & OCTOPUS, COCKTAIL SOUP) , my FAVORITE, I ordered cold which was more than appropriate for a HOT day. Time is valuable to me so the cooks delivered in a very reasonable time for the amount of guest the servers were attending. We paid $47 for 7 tacos that were not that great, they were bare bones. They charged the order of 4 tacos as two plates, which apparently was a "combo" for a small amount of food. They offered rice and beans on the side (a small scoop of each), and did not say it would be extra-- it was misleading. Spoke to the server and they were firm on not changing the price. We feel scammed. Las Brasas in Woodland is higher quality food for less than half the cost and better communication. read more

No hominy or pato, just tripe in a bland bland tomato broth. Soft tacos had no onion or cilantro, it was soggy carnitas with stewed tomato and a wilted lettuce on the side. Super burrito with asada was 'meh' and had wilted lettuce. Probably ok Mexican food for Des Moines, but out here the competition is too steep. read more

I haven't come back to El Charro in about 5 years, Decided since it was Cinco De Mayo it would be nice to get out. First of all their out door seating is great, Restaurant always looks nice, Service was good. I ordered 3 Taquitos dinner, when my Plate arrived the plate was cold my beans and rice were room temperature Taquitos were not hot inside, I feel like they attempted to heat up leftovers and couldn't get that hot enough. We had a large table after a football game. All of us are well mannered. I have never EVER had a server come out and yell "attention everyone who ordered the tacos? Who ordered the.." etc. you get my drift. So rude. And the staff acted like we were burdening them by coming in there to order food. The the food was mediocre.
