Order at the counter, grab a seat, and it somehow still feels relaxed and taken care of. Tons of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options and everything's labeled, which I appreciate. Pro tip... talk to the cashier. They can tweak a lot more than what's listed. I ended up with a grain bowl that was actually good good and an iced tea that hit. The space is really cute with indoor outdoor seating, even if I'll admit the Sacramento location has a little more personality. Service here though? So solid. Friendly, helpful, and patient with all the questions. I do think table service would level it up, but honestly we had a great time and didn't miss it that much. It is downtown Davis and with any downtown area comes the difficulty of finding parking. After a few circles around, I was able to find a parking spot. The good thing is most are 2 hour free parking. Came in on a Saturday around 10am and it was pretty packed but still a couple of tables open. At first I thought it was two separate sides of the restaurant, one being sit down service and the other being counter service but figured it out after seeing people have order number stands sitting on their table. You go up to the counter to order and pay, they give you a number to put on your table and the food will come to your table. Water is self serve and they also have ice where you can scoop yourself into your cup or if you have a reusable water bottle. I ordered the eggs Benedict and the poached eggs were perfect. The potatoes come with a little sauce tin of ketchup on the side. I wish each table had ketchup so you could use as much ketchup to your heart's desire without bugging someone. read more

What a quaint little spot. The inside is small and packed with tables and chairs. You order and pay before you eat, and the staff was very friendly. I'm a big chicken Apple sausage fan so when I saw this on the menu I knew right away I wanted to try it. The scramble was everything I hoped it would be. It was served with country potatoes that were well seasoned and had a good bite to them, as well as sourdough toast with a nice jam compote on the side. The scramble plate was a 4.7/5. The chai latte was good, and tasted more similar to chai made at home in a pot than what you'd get from a chain coffee spot, 5/5. The cornmeal waffle was by far my favorite dish. So I read some the frilly reviews and almost passed this place up. I'm so glad we didn't! What a hidden Jem.... then you throw in the Wiki bar next door and you have a perfect combination of tasty food and some snazzy drinks! Where do I start? I had the steak and house salad. All I have to say is wow! Cooked to perfection and the salad was the right size and perfect combo of walnuts, apple slices and cheese! I went to Café Bernardo for a friend's birthday brunch expecting a really great experience, especially with how popular it is, but I ended up feeling a bit underwhelmed. The place itself is really nice. The scenery is cute, modern, and has a great vibe, especially for brunch or special occasions. It definitely feels like a spot you would want to celebrate at or take pictures in. However, the food did not live up to my expectations. My potatoes tasted pretty bland and could have used more seasoning. I also ordered pancakes, and they just were not cooked to perfection. They felt slightly overcooked and not as soft or buttery as I was hoping for. I really think they could have added more butter or richness to bring the dish together. The wait was also pretty long, and for me, it did not feel worth it in the end. The overall style reminds me a bit of Crepeville, but with a more modern look. That being said, I would personally rather spend my money at Crepeville and get better quality food. Overall, the atmosphere is really sweet and enjoyable, but the food just did not hit for me this time. The best part about this restaurant is the service. Ana and Monica are the only reason I keep coming back. They're polite, engaging, and always have a good recommendation. They're truly the backbone of the mornings here. The reason for 3 stars instead of 5 is this. They have gotten very cheap. They no longer have ketchup and cholula bottles at the tables. Instead you're forced to try and dip your whole sandwich in these tiny saucers. It's very annoying and tedious. These replacement saucers instead of bottles are low class. Came here several times with friends over the course of 2 or 3 years and is a great place for a casual brunch. We can sit here chatting all day if we wanted to because there are both indoor and outdoor seating. Even better, there are pet friendly seats outdoors so it is so cute to watch the doors here! This location is an order and pay first before seating with self serve water. I also does get really busy on the weekend mornings so seating may be difficult to find. Tried the eggs benedict dishes which are decent. Sometimes the poached egg is too over cooked but overall the dish is tasty. I would definitely appreciate consistency in the dishes though. I love the roasted or baked potatoes on the side which are slightly mashed up. The burrata pizza with prosciutto was so good (4.5/5) and the Cubano sandwich was dry and was not too flavorful. I have tried the Cubano sandwich from Porto's and the flavors do not compare (2/5). Overall this is a great location to chat but the food was OK. Great casual place for breakfast! Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. We arrived early on a weekend just after 8am so we didn't have any difficulty finding parking or with a wait time. I can't see why if people arrive later those two things could be more challenging. Counter service was quick and pleasant. The servers were thorough too. They made sure to ask if we had any more food coming in our order. We ordered the chai latte, brioche French toast, and cornmeal waffle. The chai came in a large handleless mug. It's exactly what you think it is served with jack cheese, herbed potatoes, toast (GF subbed in), and jam. We took our order to the patio and enjoyed a vacation morning in a university-adjacent setting at the beginning of the school year in fall. How can you not be in a good mood?* *The food was perfectly serviceable (not an insult) and the ordering process was smooth. My meal didn't knock my socks off but it wasn't objectionable. I went to school in Davis and worked for the university for nearly 3 years, and in all of that time I never visited Cafe Bernardo. I had been to the Wiki Bar on more than one occasion, but my impression of the restaurant was that it was pretentious. After finally eating there, I can say without a doubt that it is NOT pretentious, but still not a restaurant I will likely visit again. We were meeting friends for brunch on a Sunday, and after checking online I saw they didn't take reservations, so I was worried about finding a seat. My anxiety rose exponentially when I got to the restaurant and discovered you order first and sit down--at least, that was the impression we got. Since we arrived ahead of our friends, we decided to order coffees just so we could have an excuse to grab a table. Little did we know, it is actually OK to get a table first. In fact, you can even order from the table from your phone, which made splitting the bill effortless. I cannot really comment on the service because in many ways Bernardo's is self-serve: you get your own table, order your own food, get your own water, etc. etc. The worker at the front who took my coffee order was perfectly pleasant and polite, though. I ordered the mocha based off the description of homemade ganache. Even though I said this restaurant isn't pretentious, I do take issue with the fact that they serve the mocha in a bowl. Yes, a bowl--no handle or anything. It's a little undignified drinking a mocha like it's a bowl of miso soup, but the mocha was delicious and I appreciated I could get it half-caf. However, that soup-bowl of a coffee cup became a major issue when our entrees came, because there wasn't enough room at our 4 top. I had to flag a server to ask whether I needed to bus the cup myself, at which point she took it from me. We weren't able to get another server to help with the other coffee cups that we had to maneuver around for the remainder of the meal. But all of this was minor in comparison to the complete and utter crime that was their benedict. I love eggs benedict. It is my go-to order for brunch. There was just SO much wrong with this benedict., but the biggest issue? The egg yolks were FIRM. Given the prices of eggs and how precious they were, this issue was inexcusable. I hadn't had an egg for a week and the two that I got didn't even have the runny yolk one would expect from a poached egg in a benedict. I appreciated that they let me sub bacon instead of ham with no upcharge, and the bacon itself was thick cut and delicious. However, the slice of bread that the bacon, egg, and hollandaise sat upon was sad and soggy. Literally soggy--it was wet, and not from soaking in the hollandaise. In summary: though Bernardo's is much more approachable than I initially thought and not overly expensive/bougie, it's not a restaurant I think I want to approach again due to what I deem to be serious issues with their food. read more

If you have to make any changes to it, it's a coin toss as to whether or not they'll make the changes. You also have to order at the register, so the lobby gets clogged with people. They used to have the option of ordering online from your table, but got rid of it for some reason. They're the only breakfast place in Davis so usually the only option. We visited Café Bernardo while running errands in Davis and decided to stop for a coffee break. The space is large and calm inside, but also very busy -- clearly a local favorite. They mainly serve breakfast and lunch, but we were told we could order just coffee and dessert. We got two cappuccinos and two desserts. The coffee arrived first -- strong and flavorful, just how a cappuccino should be. Unfortunately, the desserts took a long time and didn't come out until we were halfway through our drinks. That was a bit disappointing -- I personally prefer to enjoy it all together. We sat outside, and for me it wasn't the most comfortable -- the iron chairs looked vintage but felt really cold. I was wearing a dress, and it was chilly on my legs the whole time. Some updates to the outdoor seating would make a big difference. The staff was kind and polite, but the pace was very slow. One of the first new cafés in the downtown Davis area this place has been there for a while with an even more expanded menu and attached to a hotel that's on the corner now. The space is a bit more tidy and streamlined. The menu is even more expanded, which is great as I didn't realize my favorite Thai noodle salad is still on the menu (the only thing i used to order over and over). You come in order at the counter and get a number and take it to your table. There are plenty of servers coming by to check on whether you need anything or water which was nice, I happened to be here for a breakfast, and it was very hard to decide what to get so many things a great-I got a very basic breakfast, but everything was done just right. read more

This place is a hotspot for weekend brunch! I should've known it would be packed on a Saturday morning. Luckily we snagged the last large table but it was a tight fit for 5 adults, 2 toddlers and a stroller! Not ideal for large parties. They have a pretty good size patio for seating but it was a bit cold out and those tables looked like they were all for 4 people max. Service is counter style. If you need anything after your food has been delivered then you'll need to flag someone down. Our food arrived in about 15 minutes which was good for how busy it was. I ordered the kimchi fried rice, hopeful that they could do it justice but I should've known it would be a miss. The rice wasn't sticky despite all the kimchi juice, just more like a soupy bowl of rice that didn't stick together. Broccoli isn't a traditional addition either but I liked the pan fried spam pieces in it. Eggs were cooked nicely and I appreciated that they put two. Other than that, probably wouldn't order that again and would stick to the American breakfast dishes. Eggs were over cooked and not poached to perfection - it also had a weird texture to it. The most crucial part of an eggs Benny is having a runny yolk. Hollandaise lacked depth. Wasn't salty enough. No flavor. Potatoes weren't seasoned at all but they had a nice crunch to it (I asked for extra crunchy). Overall, this is good breakfast for Davis standards. (Davis food standards are low).
