Tiny little shop with an unassuming exterior. I just ordered for pick-up and took them to-go. Everything we tried was pretty good. Not my favorite dumpling spot but definitely solid.

The Dumpling House, a Chinese takeout staple in downtown Davis for years, offers average quality Chinese takeout food, typical of college town student fare. Since most customers come for takeout, the restaurant inside is usually quite empty.

Steamed pork n chives dumpling order.

I found myself in downtown Davis and feeling a bit peckish so looking for a quick bite. There is a ton load of eateries to choose from all within a stone's throw from each other. So many choices. I landed at the Dumpling House. Me and this pls e go back a long way, all the way to when they first opened in 2010. Not only do they have home made dumplings, they also have other menu items such as Asian: noodles, vegetable dishes, popcorn chicken, green onion pancakes, AND fish n chips with the customary sides. Lots of options. The business was a fish n chips shop before the current owners took ownership in 2010. Cool that they kept those items on the menu. Even with the varied menu options, for me the main attraction is the dumplings. Pan fried, deep fried, or steamed. Variety of fillings. My fave is the steamed pork n chives. The density and the texture of the filling is spot on. The flavor is good. The green onion pancakes are also a fave of mine. Orders are taken at the register in the building. Sit anywhere and they'll bring your food to you. There is indoor and outdoor seating. The interior is not particularly large. And the outdoor seating is picnic table style. It's a no frills kinda place.

Out of all the dumpling shops popping up all over, the Dumpling House still trumps most. Their dumplings are much bigger than most and usually has more piece for a same or cheaper price. The flavors of the dumplings are very good. You can choose steamed, pan fried, deep fried or in broth (extra $2). They also have other items to make it a complete meal such as stir fried vegetable dishes, noodle and rice plates, also fish and chips. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Once you place your order, just sit down and they somehow will find you where ever you are sitting. Food comes out pretty fast. They have a water station near where you order your food where you can get your own water. If you are sharing and need plates, you can asked them for cardboard trays. Ambiance is chill. It's a nice place for a small group to eat good food and chit chat.

Get the potstickers!! Pan fried to perfection, the pork and chive potstickers were so fresh and yummy Service was quick and friendly. Celebrating their 23rd year of business.

We had the pork & chive dumplings, pork & cabbage potstickers, and the green beans. The dumplings were juicy and flavorful, the potstickers had that perfect crispy bottom, and the green beans were super tasty with just the right amount of seasoning. Everything tasted fresh and homemade. I've been going to this shop since college over 10 years ago, and their quality is still up there today! It's a very comfortable, student friendly vibe, service is quick too.

food was okay, nothing special. portions were big and food was relatively cheap too! definitely better chinese food in davis but this is ok if you are looking for something quick! it's in a nice spot in downtown tho!

Hectic hectic location but the food quality makes up for it. Everything is weak seasoned and flavorful. Absolutely love the pan fried dumplings. Their chili oil is really good too. The fried calamari is a classic. So much yumminess to choose from!

Service is very efficient and quick. Went up and place order at the front and paid. The siu mai was a bit over cooked. The skin was too dry. The pot stickers were good but was surprised the were fried. Normally pot stickers are just pan fried. But the filling was awesome. We'd come back and try just regular dumplings next time. The green onion bread is forgettable. Texture was good but there wasn't a lot of green onions. The flavor there was just lacking. The sauce it came with saved it.

I've been here twice..staff is very friendly, prices are affordable, and food is ready within 10 minutes. What I have tried so far: siu mai (2/5) -- rubbery, overdone, really small and seems like it is from those frozen trays in grocery stores wonton soup (2/5) -- wonton skin falling apart and very soggy, meat had little flavor nor did the broth pork chive dumpling, pan fried (4/5) -- good chewy texture from the dough, good amount of filling, addictive dipping sauce beef dumpling, boiled (3/5) -- not much flavor and I just prefer the texture from the pan fried dough better than boiled calamari (4/5) -- comes as fried sticks with tartar sauce. was tender and not greasy Overall, I would stick to only their pan fried dumplings. Not sure if I would come back due to all the other options in the city.

steamed pork and chive
Ester L.

Got the pork and chive steamed dumplings, they were unexpectedly juicy and flavorful BUT the filling was too salty. Service was quick, food came like 7 minutes after ordering. You have to ask for a little paper plate thing and you should or else juice will get everywhere. The dipping sauce is pretty good, like slightly sweet soy sauce but pretty basic. With the salty filling it was too much. Definitely a hole in the wall family restaurant, I had a good time here.

walnut shrimp, dumplings

Cheap and casual spot for dumplings in a nice college town area. The food comes out quick and feels super fresh -- 3 orders of dumplings + walnut shrimp was the perfect amount of food for 4 hungry people. Total came out to about $17 per person. I liked the pan fried dumplings the most, but all were flavorful and especially good dunked in the sauce they give you. I also really liked the walnut shrimp -- the sauce was super yummy! Would recommend for a quick, cheap, no frills lunch option.

We picked this spot to stop on our way home coming down Hwy 80. I could not wait. And oh was it WORTH THE WAIT! The place is in a busy area where you have to get lucky to find a parking spot. It's a quaint old house. Bright paint, not fancy. BEST DUMPLINGS YOU'VE EVER HAD!! We had chicken and vegetable pan fried. Crispy yet doughy and full of flavor. You WILL eat too many!! They come in packs of 12. We had General Chicken and Lemon chicken, they come with broccoli and either rice or noodles... you should choose one of each. We also got Bejing Noodles- the black bean paste. Everything was delicious, I think we ate too fast it was so good. 100% will go back. If I lived in Davis I would eat this all the time!! We only met one guy- at a register that looked like it was an afterthought. He was super friendly and buff! Go there! You will be stuffed, satisfied and happy!!

There are two restaurants in one menu inside.

It was Thanksgiving day and my husband had come with me to my weekly shift at the California Raptor…read moreCenter. We were both pretty hungry afterwards and weren't sure what places were open, or what we wanted to eat. We decided to drive around downtown Davis just to get a sense of what was open, and saw that Tasty Kitchen was bustling. We had never eaten there before, but as it was pretty much our only option besides fast food (which I did not want), we decided to try them out and have a good Thanksgiving dinner. I took a quick browse at their Yelp reviews before heading in, and the food looked pretty good, so I figured why not. Since we had come pretty much on a whim (I usually heavily research restaurants before trying new places), we weren't quite sure what to order, but I knew I wanted some carbs. We wanted to share a fried rice, so we chose the dried scallop and egg white fried rice. My husband was eyeing the beef stew lo mein, and I was eager to try the beef chow fun with black bean sauce. We were seated quickly and given hot tea to enjoy. It had been a cold day, so the tea was very welcome. We placed our order and then sat back to people watch while we waited. There were a few large groups dining in, but while watching the staff, they all worked efficiently, and food was constantly coming out of the kitchen. Delivery drivers and those who called in for takeout were also coming and going. We waited a while for our food, but it was also because everyone seemed to have ordered at the same time for the dinner rush (and we had come around 17:45 too). I guess everyone was feeling like an early Thanksgiving dinner. We were honestly amazed by the huge portion sizes when our dishes arrived to our table. Everything was reasonably priced as well, and we knew we would have plenty of leftovers. The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was delightfully saucy, and the noodles still had a nice wok hay. The beef was extremely velvety and tender. My husband enjoyed his beef stew lo mein. The egg noodles were perfectly bouncy, and the braised beef was tender. The dried scallop egg white fried rice was pretty good as well. I had hoped for a bit more wok hay and scallop flavor, but it was a little under seasoned. I would say it was a nice palette cleanser if you will, and at least the rice was nice and fluffy. I would have to say that the food here is comforting and hearty, but it didn't have as much depth of flavor as I would have liked. However, you really get your money's worth when you come here. It was $49 for everything before tip, and we had so many leftovers to take home. Our waiter even took our plates and packaged them to go for us, so that was a nice touch. I'm used to packaging my own leftovers these days. There's something for everyone at this restaurant, and I would like to be back to try some of their other dishes. Another table across from us ordered the Mongolian beef, which came on a sizzling platter, and that smelled so good. That will definitely be a contender next time we visit. I'm definitely thankful that Tasty Kitchen was open on Thanksgiving, and will keep this restaurant in our rotation for a holiday meal.

My husband and I came here after lunch and ordered two sauce, fried rice, a spicy, braised beef dish, and gai lan (Chinese broccoli). I was so excited to eat the fried rice and it tasted exactly like what I imagined it to taste like. I don't typically like really starchy, thick sauces, but that was exactly what I was looking for. I don't know, it's not like it's anything super special or a crazy amazing delicious dish, it's just a nostalgic taste that I really missed and used to only be able to get at the old tea house in Davis over a decade ago. The spicy braised beef, unfortunately was the kind of spicy. I didn't want it to be, so if you don't like tongue, numbing spicy, this is not the dish for you. That being said, the rest of the dish was good, I found the meat to be quite tender And well seasoned, when I could taste beyond numbness, lol. Vegetables are vegetables, really not more to say about that. I'll definitely come back for the fried rice and to try other clay pot dishes, which they have a lot of variety of. Also, it seems like a lot of people really enjoy their duck, so I'll be make sure to order that next time. In terms of ambience or service, it is a Chinese restaurant. You get what you get, and that is a person who brings your food out. Just kidding (kind of) I'm not expecting five star restaurant levels of service at this price point. Plates and cups were clean, the server came when I raised my hand, idk I don't really need more than that! Also, as a Vietnamese person who always has cash on her, I love when I get a discount (5%) for using cash.

Great spicy food and friendly staff. Food (10/10) - The food here is AMAZING! Perfect balance of spice to flavor and every single bite is electric. The sichuan numbing pepper in the Chongqing soup was DELICIOUS. Mix it with some of the white rice and you have a dish all by iteself. The chicken itself had a nice chew and was very fragrant. Loved the texture and flaovr of the vermicelli; nice bounce to the noodles while soaking in all the spicy soup. My one complaint would be that they have soft bones (sign of long boiling time) so be careful of that! Also got the spicy stir-fried pork kidney... don't diss it 'til you try it. Super good, with that nice bit of chew. Take a bite of pepper, kidney, and white rice and BOOM! Perfect bite. **Recommendation: Rice is a key component for the dishes here. Without rice, everything will be too spicy, too savory, and overall too overwhelming. The rice is the thing that helps tie everything together (as it frequently is) Service (8/10) - Good service; nothing notable. Nice people and I think most of them speak Mandarin. Service and seating was also fast. Order of things to come out of the kitchen was a bit strange: soup for the chicken, rice, stir-fry, chicken. Honestly, not that big of a problem but just decided to comment. Price (8/10) - The price here is a bit on the pricier side; $54 for 2 but there were some leftovers (had to make my own rice though). Some of the dishes are more worth than others. The Chonqing chicken was $25 but you got a large bowl of chicken with soup and vermicelli. On the other hand, the stir-fry for $20 was notably padded with vegetables and I would say a majority of the dish was not the kidney. At the very least, the taste of the food compensates. However, this place is likely not a college go-to. Overall, great restaurant that I will be coming back to again (maybe with my parents LOL) or at the very least, would come with a large group as it is more fitting for family style. Highly recommend!

My kid mentioned they usually are very pack and people would dine outdoor, but I guess we arrived early so there wasn't any wait time. Ordered few items, food came out very fast and the tastes are not bad at all. Beef Fried Rice Noodles: How do you differentiate if this dish is good or not, it is about how much excessive oil that's left on the plate. The stir fried was good, not too greasy, and they marinate the meat well. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, this place's meat was good. Only they could stir fried with even higher eat to create more "wok air" Sticky Rice Stick with Brown Sugar: First time trying this dish, so not sure what to expect. But it does seem to be a dessert to me, my comment would be higher if the rice stick is more chewy. Hot & Sour Shredded Potato: This is common dish from northern part of China. The way they prepared was awesome. The potato was not starchy and the seasoning is just right. A bit greasy but this is actually my favorite dish! Shrimp and Pork with Chives Dumplings: Meat is fresh and dumpling wrap is great too. Each dumpling size is not too big and wasn't torn. Taste is okay but maybe try another filling if I visit again. I would come again to try out other things on the menu if I'm visiting my kid again.

We had the seafood tofu hotpot, shrimp wonton, garlic green bean, mongolian beef, half hainan chicken, and ny steak spaghetti to-go. Was a little busy at 7 on a holiday so we waited like ten minutes to get our order in, the guy memorized our order right as I said it lol. He confirmed and we got our soup in ten mins, ten mins for green beans and mongolian beef, another ten minutes for our chicken, then like seven for hotpot. Most disappointing was chicken, it's not hainan at all and just standard hong kong white chicken. Taste is fine and fresh but was sad. Best was the seafood hotpot AND the wonton soup. Both had great flavor and saltiness and was just sooo good. Wontons were very tasty and had a lot of meat, definitely both pork and shrimp, and soup even had little shrimp in it ifkyk. The seafood hotpot had great variety and flavor, my parents were pleased with the fish bits in it, the tofu was yummy bc it's fried tofu, the crab texture was not great maybe overcooked and I didn't like the soft cucumber but otherwise the broccoli scallop shrimp tofu fish bok choy was all great. Green beans and mongolian beef SERIOUSLY needed some wok flavor and wish the beef had black pepper because the seasoning was a bit lacking (wok flavor would be great here) and overall the vegetables were a little undercooked. They were addictive though I definitely kept going back for more. Hot tea is jasmine tea. Service was a bit lackluster but totally understandable and even though I was in a rush we were in and out by an hour and like ten minutes which worked. Ambiance wise, I didn't like how the lights are half brighter and whiter than the sun and half nicely softly lit. Tables are nice wood and a bit sticky but okay. There's random Chinese TV on the walls, very traditional lol and I think no music. Overall very pleased! Will definitely come back as much as possible to support, and highly highly recommend. I went from a thin top to a medium weight sweater. We arrived in Davis I grabbed my jacket to pair with my sweater. Today was a day spent exploring Davis to see the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts (CCACA). What a great Conference. We come each year for this Conference and explore Davis every time we are here. After exploring the first building of the show it was coming on time to eat. We looked around the current shopping center and my husband didn't see anything he was craving. He said we'll go more into town and look for a noodle place. He said he remembered one from our last visit, down one of the alleys. Walking up the street we saw a couple of advertisements. A sandwich board was on the sidewalk for Davis Noodle CIty, the exact place we were looking for. The little Noodle Shop in the alley. We weaved through the other businesses, past the dumpling restaurant, past the outdoor seating and to the front door of the Davis Noodle City Restaurant. The out door seating looked really welcoming, but it was chilly out so we opted for eating inside with the other table that was occupied. There were 3 parties eating outside when we arrived. When we walked inside we were greeted and told to take any table. We choose a table in the corner. The menus were under the glass table top, keeping it clean and easy to read. Each place setting had its own copy of the menu. After looking at the menu, remembering what was offered on the sandwich board in front, and cross referencing it with Yelp Reviews we started ordering. We opted for the Five Spice Beef Noodles, and I asked if that was a good option and she said it was their top seller. The Yelp Reviews were only ok for that dish, but I took our chances. The second dish we ordered was the Dan Dan Noodles She tried to upscale us to the one with vegetables, but that dish was a cold dish so we when for the standard Dan Dan Noodles. Both dishes came out quickly. The Dan Dan noodles were not spicy as I anticipated, which was good, I wasn't really looking for spicy. I liked the flavor and realized that if you mixed it up there is a sauce on the bottom that is really tasty. Dan Dan Noodles ($8.25 a steal) is a solid dish and I highly reccomend it. It's a great bowlful of noodles. If you are hopping for other ingredients you are out of luck, it's 100% noodles with a sprinkling of peanuts on top and a sauce on the bottom. The Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup ($12.75)was as described in the reviews. It comes with American Broccoli and carrots. The beef is so good it melts in your mouth. The broth is minimal and lacked flavor. I'd think that it's advertised as Five Spice that it would have more flavor. I don't reccomend it if you are looking for a strong flavor. If you are looking for great meat, that melts in your mouth, but is also a little fatty then you have the perfect dish. Both dishes came with fresh noodles, none of those dried and rehydrated noodles that some places serve. The noodles on both dishes were different and pleasant. I highly reccomend their fresh noodles. Customer service was good. She came to check up on us and was pleasant. Parking is street parking. And they have a bathroom on site that is clean and well stocked.

Unfortunately, this place has both bad service and food is not great. 2 stars for the price. Food (3/10) - I don't know how to describe it outside of the fact that it's just bland. I got the "Marco Polo noodles" which is just Chinese jia jiang mien. Let's start with the positives. I liked the noodle texture; it had a nice spring and were thick for a decent chew. Now, onto the bad. You could just tell that the noodles would be bland just by a look and smell. The smell of the bowl wasn't one of fragrant stir-fried pork but it actually smelled like starchy water. The sauce was super watery and had no flavor and I don't think there was even ground pork in the noodles. From what I could tell, it was some diced up mushroom and then black bean paste, without black bean flavor might I add. I had to add a GENEROUS amount of soy sauce and chili oil to make it taste decent. Honestly, I'd say it's pretty hard to mess up this dish as a whole and there's a lot of leeway on flavor but I have not tasted something that bland in a while. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have the thai tea. This thing was so sweet that it was borderline undrinkable. I had to wait for the ice to melt in the drink before it was bearable and even then, it still left this residual sticky taste in my mouth. Also it's 4 dollars for canned thai tea; she grabbed it out the fridge. The only sort of saving grace of this restaurant is that it's relatively cheap. $12.50 for a good portion of noodles might convince me to go back(?) VERY BIG maybe though. I might want to try their soup noodles. Service (5/10) - It didn't really seem like she wanted me to be there. She kind of just sat behind the counter on her phone with an Airpod in the whole time. She was just on her phone the whole time and overall inattentive. When she was, she was just asking if I was ready to order (twice in the span of under 3-ish minutes). Ambiance (6/10) - Eh. It was just kinda weird. The lighting was dingy. Also didn't like how they left dirty tables around (clearly looked like they had been there for a while). Overall, probably wouldn't visit again. Might give it a second chance but food for price was pretty good. Unfortunately, bad food for good price is a no-go for me.
