    Deep Fried Chicken Wings

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month has passed and I am late on my reviews but after enjoying my nieces orchestra concert we had a family dinner at Tasty Kitchen! We were thoroughly surprised that we liked all the dishes we ordered! Just check-out my pictures and you'll see what I mean! We especially loved the orange chicken, the house special fried rice and the fried chicken wings! I'm a soup person and the broth for the wor wonton soup and the wontons themselves were so yummy 10/10 would recommend! We got seated right away and our order came out within 15-20 minutes after ordering. Classic Chinese Restaurant vibe with lazy susans and delicious food! And don't forget to drink your hot tea after!

    Soy Sauce Chicken over rice

On being seated, a teapot and cups were brought to our table. I tasted a sip of the tea and didn't bother with any more as it tasted like soap. I don't know if it was the variety of the tea, but I think not. I like most teas. After tasting liquid soap when I was in nursery school, I haven't liked soap. Due to dietary restrictions, there wasn't much on the menu for me to order. My friend from China recommended the Empress Chicken. She said it's boiled in a broth for a long time. When the waiter came to take our order, she ordered in Chinese. I ordered in English and he warned me that the Empress Chicken was served cold and recommended the Soy Sauce Chicken. I went with his recommendation. It apparently was a whole chicken thigh, but cut in pieces with shards of bone in each piece. It was hard to eat. It tasted fine but was difficult to eat and daintily remove the bones from my mouth. I guess I made a bad choice. The restaurant is rather large. There are tables and booths. It was about half full when we had lunch on a Thursday at around noon.

Wow! I'm surprised I never wrote a review for this place after eating here a bajillion times during undergrad and occasionally coming back when passing by Davis, lol. We came right when they opened and they already had 4 other parties join, in addition to my partner and I. Tables were plentiful. You'll see tables for 4, 6, and larger parties (like the round table). I imagine some families come here to dine too. When I was a college kid, I've always found their food decent and not so expensive for the value marked, but this time, I had a hard time finishing my meal. Perhaps my metabolism is slowing down, lol. Anyways, there was this one dish that called for mushrooms, tofu, and beef which I really liked, but I could never get the name of the dish right. So, I'd always eat some other beef dish offered here lol. For today, I got some sizzling beef with bell peppers. And of course, I can't remember the name. I thought the dish was okay, but a tad salty. The egg chow fun was okay too, but had an overwhelming taste of turmeric (I'm guessing it's turmeric because of the yellow tint), which threw me off. Shrimps were bouncy and had a good chew, and the egg gravy was nice and thick. I wished the noodles weren't so firm. Service was okay. You'll get a slight discount paying in cash! Don't make excuses to save money as a college kid. You're literally dining across the street from the banks, lol. Save your money where you can!

    Two sauce fried rice

Is it bad to base my review entirely on one dish? Because this is one of the few restaurants I've been able to find outside of the Bay Area that has two sauce fried rice. My husband and I came here after lunch and ordered two sauce, fried rice, a spicy, braised beef dish, and gai lan (Chinese broccoli). I was so excited to eat the fried rice and it tasted exactly like what I imagined it to taste like. I don't typically like really starchy, thick sauces, but that was exactly what I was looking for. I don't know, it's not like it's anything super special or a crazy amazing delicious dish, it's just a nostalgic taste that I really missed and used to only be able to get at the old tea house in Davis over a decade ago. The spicy braised beef, unfortunately was the kind of spicy. I didn't want it to be, so if you don't like tongue, numbing spicy, this is not the dish for you. That being said, the rest of the dish was good, I found the meat to be quite tender And well seasoned, when I could taste beyond numbness, lol. Vegetables are vegetables, really not more to say about that. I'll definitely come back for the fried rice and to try other clay pot dishes, which they have a lot of variety of. Also, it seems like a lot of people really enjoy their duck, so I'll be make sure to order that next time. In terms of ambience or service, it is a Chinese restaurant. You get what you get, and that is a person who brings your food out. Just kidding (kind of) I'm not expecting five star restaurant levels of service at this price point. Plates and cups were clean, the server came when I raised my hand, idk I don't really need more than that! Also, as a Vietnamese person who always has cash on her, I love when I get a discount (5%) for using cash.

Our college friend group recently returned to Davis for a visit, and this spot is a must-visit for us Aggies! It holds a special place in our hearts, bringing back so many great memories. Each of us ordered a dish based on our college favorites: the House Fried Rice, Hand-Shredded Chicken with Jellyfish, and Braised Tofu with Vegetables and Mushrooms. The Hand-Shredded Chicken with Jellyfish remains my all-time favorite! It's hard to find this unique flavor anywhere else, and it tasted just as delicious as I remember from my college days. The food was tasty and nostalgic, making the experience even more special.

Ordered Togo Curry Chicken Hotpot style, dish cane overflowing with portion and taste. Amazing dish, restaurant was bubbling inside with locals happy to be enjoying some amazing Cantonese Chinese Food. AAAPLUS

The restaurant has a slightly outdated appearance, but the food is excellent and delicious. The prices are quite reasonable.

Beef with gai lan. A staple comfort food for me.

They do not do a full dim sum service or offer swim in the tank fresh seafood but is otherwise a solid Cantonese restaurant with some popular Chinese American dishes on the menu. I like the clay pots which are heavier, stewed dishes with lots of gravy great with steamed rice. The interior is clean but can use a refresh soon. Service is quick, efficient without much charm. Parking is easy in the large adjacent North F street lot.

Fire! Affordable and authentic. My parents would make the drive all the way from San Jose to eat at Tasty Kitchen. Service is always fast and the people working are sweet. The food has great flavors and is overall very yummy. Good sit down to just chit chat , catch up and eat good food. My favorites: Stonepot Tofu and Fish and the Fried Rice and Peking Duck.

Eons ago this place was the Silver Dragon that we go to a lot. Now it is Tasty Kitchen and my first time trying this place. As soon as you walk in they sit you right away and give you hot tea. No extra cost for the tea. They take your order right away and the food comes out fast. Not a long wait. For my first visit, ordered the Salty Fish Chicken Fried Rice and half order of the Hand Shredded Chicken with Jellyfish, seventh in my chicken series trying different chicken dishes from different places. The hand shredded chicken is a cold dish but full of flavor and for me is the perfect accompaniment to the fried rice. I will definitely order the chicken dish again next time with family. The portions are generous that I had to take some home. The place is bright with glass windows throughout the restaurant. The service is great with them packing the leftovers for you. They have a lot in their menu including lunch specials so you can explore different dishes if you like trying new stuff. I will come back and bring family. Thank you.

    Braised tofu with vegetables
    Han-Nha T.

Solid homestyle Cantonese spot. They always have seating available and orders come out fairly quickly. Braised tofu was still crunchy. Didn't come with too many mushrooms but had a lot of bok choy that, especially for davis, we're surprisingly young. The Szechuan chicken is not spicy but a little tingly, on par for what you expect. Sweet veggies and good sauce. Each dish was close to $15 excluding tax and tip and is definitely worth it.

green beans, mongolian beef, bok choy
    Azra A.

Was in Davis for a conference and we were looking for a sit down place with lots of options for a group of 4. I'd say this delivered for sure. Quickly greeted and seated, recommendations provided, customizations allowed, and the food came out super quickly. We ordered a ton of things - creamy chicken corn soup (too goopy for me), mongolian beef, bok choy w/ garlic, green beans w/o pork, veggie fried rice (meh), and the chicken chow fun. The beef, noodles, and green beans were definitely the stars. If I'm even in the area again, I'd for sure come back.

I ordered 2 simple items for takeout, which they said would be ready around 8:20pm. On my way over, I received a call from the restaurant that they didn't have the noodle for the noodle dish I ordered, so I gave them the green light to substitute for a different rice noodle. The pickup time was now 8:35. When I arrived, it was bright out, the restaurant was loud, and the waiting area was standing room only. I ended up waiting so long that the sun set, the waiting area emptied, half the dining tables cleared, the NBA game ended, the kitchen closed, and staff started cleaning! The front desk person seemed concerned that my order wasn't ready so she checked on my order a couple times. She assured me the noodles were done and it was only the egg tarts that we were waiting for. (Maybe the hens were still hatching the eggs?!!) Considering I ordered online and even waited before driving over, it was ridiculous to still wait an hour for 2 items. I even watched people come in to get seated, order and eat during my time there. I was about to cancel my order to get a refund -- and forego eating dinner altogether because waiting so long there had made me lose my appetite. It seemed obvious there was a mess up somewhere because it was only my order that was not ready. But then someone brought out my bag. The food was honestly just okay. The egg tarts were a 7/10 and dry chow fun was a 4/10. The experience was a 0/10. I can't recommend it. It could've been a fluke experience but the manager could have handled it better. My order should have been comped for taking ONE HOUR longer than it was supposed to be ready.

Beef Fried Rice Noodles: How do you differentiate if this dish is good or not, it is about how much excessive oil that's left on the plate. We had the seafood tofu hotpot, shrimp wonton, garlic green bean, mongolian beef, half hainan chicken, and ny steak spaghetti to-go. Was a little busy at 7 on a holiday so we waited like ten minutes to get our order in, the guy memorized our order right as I said it lol. He confirmed and we got our soup in ten mins, ten mins for green beans and mongolian beef, another ten minutes for our chicken, then like seven for hotpot. Most disappointing was chicken, it's not hainan at all and just standard hong kong white chicken. Taste is fine and fresh but was sad. Best was the seafood hotpot AND the wonton soup. Both had great flavor and saltiness and was just sooo good. Wontons were very tasty and had a lot of meat, definitely both pork and shrimp, and soup even had little shrimp in it ifkyk. The seafood hotpot had great variety and flavor, my parents were pleased with the fish bits in it, the tofu was yummy bc it's fried tofu, the crab texture was not great maybe overcooked and I didn't like the soft cucumber but otherwise the broccoli scallop shrimp tofu fish bok choy was all great. Green beans and mongolian beef SERIOUSLY needed some wok flavor and wish the beef had black pepper because the seasoning was a bit lacking (wok flavor would be great here) and overall the vegetables were a little undercooked. They were addictive though I definitely kept going back for more. Hot tea is jasmine tea. Service was a bit lackluster but totally understandable and even though I was in a rush we were in and out by an hour and like ten minutes which worked. Ambiance wise, I didn't like how the lights are half brighter and whiter than the sun and half nicely softly lit. Tables are nice wood and a bit sticky but okay. Stopped by with a couple of friends for lunch! We ordered calamari, the pan fried pork dumplings,…read moreand the kimchi pork dumplings. The calamari wasn't quite what we expected. It was pretty heavily battered and not too seasoned, but it wasn't bad. I think there is probably better calamari elsewhere. The dumplings were amazing though! Both came out piping hot. The fried ones had a nice crispy exterior and were super flavorful and juicy. The kimchi ones definitely had a kick, but were also juicy and delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed all of them and would recommend both to anyone in the mood for dumplings. The place itself has good seating options both inside and outside! I would highly recommend enjoying a meal outside on the patio on a nice weather day :)

I hate to say it because the workers are very friendly and I love hearing people speak Canto when I'm homesick. Very casual ambiance, might have a wait to be seated but they take a reasonable amount of time to get your food out after ordering. Have a few vegetarian options as well. It is conviently downtown unlike Yang Kee, but I still dont come back to here. I'm glad they've found their audience and seem to be doing well, though.

Wow! Ascended to my #1 restaurant spot in Davis. Definitely more of an infrequent meal since I…read morewould consider it more on the expensive side. Average dishes are ~20 dollars. Great spicy food and friendly staff. Food (10/10) - The food here is AMAZING! Perfect balance of spice to flavor and every single bite is electric. The sichuan numbing pepper in the Chongqing soup was DELICIOUS. Mix it with some of the white rice and you have a dish all by iteself. The chicken itself had a nice chew and was very fragrant. Loved the texture and flaovr of the vermicelli; nice bounce to the noodles while soaking in all the spicy soup. My one complaint would be that they have soft bones (sign of long boiling time) so be careful of that! Also got the spicy stir-fried pork kidney... don't diss it 'til you try it. Super good, with that nice bit of chew. Take a bite of pepper, kidney, and white rice and BOOM! Perfect bite. **Recommendation: Rice is a key component for the dishes here. Without rice, everything will be too spicy, too savory, and overall too overwhelming. The rice is the thing that helps tie everything together (as it frequently is) Service (8/10) - Good service; nothing notable. Nice people and I think most of them speak Mandarin. Service and seating was also fast. Order of things to come out of the kitchen was a bit strange: soup for the chicken, rice, stir-fry, chicken. Honestly, not that big of a problem but just decided to comment. Price (8/10) - The price here is a bit on the pricier side; $54 for 2 but there were some leftovers (had to make my own rice though). Some of the dishes are more worth than others. The Chonqing chicken was $25 but you got a large bowl of chicken with soup and vermicelli. On the other hand, the stir-fry for $20 was notably padded with vegetables and I would say a majority of the dish was not the kidney. At the very least, the taste of the food compensates. However, this place is likely not a college go-to. Overall, great restaurant that I will be coming back to again (maybe with my parents LOL) or at the very least, would come with a large group as it is more fitting for family style. Highly recommend!

I've never dined in, only ordered take out to eat at a friend's place or other gathering spot. Orders are fulfilled timely, and we've never had any issues. Their menu is massive, so I do recommend looking over the yelp photos and menu before using the website to order. Nearly everything on the menu can be made vegan. Vegan shrimp, pork, chicken, appetizers, soups, you name it. I may never be able to try everything I want to! The vegan beef tastes just like the real thing....like I've had to really take a look and make sure it's not. Idk how they do this vegan science but it's delicious. I do not miss animal meat. Peace out. Favorite menu items: Mandarin tofu Vegan Beef Chow Fun Wor Wonton Soup Vegan Orange Chicken Chin Ju Crispy Tofu Skin Roll appetizer Vegan Happy Family (medley of vegan proteins made in house like beef, chicken, and shrimp) A great spot to go if you hang out with meat eaters and veggie friendly types. Everybody can be a happy family. It's also convenient for whatever function you're on the way to. I really love Ding How! Check out their lunch specials, hovering around $10. Dinners are closer to $15.
