Chairman Mao Braised Pork and Hunan Style Fried Noodles
    Pascale S.

Got take out from here using pick up on Door dash. The food was pretty tasty and a good amount for the price! We got the hunan style fried noodles and chairman mao pork. I'd get the noodles again, but didn't love the pork. Pork was a bit too fatty for me and didn't seem to have a ton of flavor. Noodles were really good though. Overall would give this place another try.

Ambiance: a friendly modern hunan restaurant with lots of seating and a dim environment. Service: extremely attentive and fast. The food was brought out incredibly fast. Food: I ordered the spicy beef noodle soup with rice noodles. The soup was incredibly flavorful and spicy. The noodles were tender and chewy. Highly recommend

Really fresh and tasty! The price-to-food ratio is also decent in the current market. My favorites: -string beans -eggplant w/ string beans -bok choy My friend liked their ma po tofu, but she said that the numbing spice (not sure what it's called) was a little heavy. Just FYI...

After ordering, the food delivered quickly , literally as the men ran to and from with the generous portions of foods. Food was tasty, savory and packed with flavors & heat! Great vibe, with excellent service! Excellent Eggplant & Beans, Lamb & Pork Hock.

I was in Davis and got hungry and looked for a restaurant I've never tried before. Found Hunan Style. Never heard or read about this place so coming in blind. Ordered the Hunan style sautéed beef and the Hunan style fried noodles with shrimp. First with the noodles, there is nothing special about it. It's like any chow mein I've had before. I do like the smoky flavor from the wok. My favorite is the sautéed beef. It was tender and flavorful and spicy. I think I requested medium spicy and it's okay for me. Had leftover that I brought home and my sister liked it too. Ordered takeout of Hunan spicy chicken and this one I do not recommend. I feel like there is not a lot of chicken in proportion to the dried chilies. Plus there were bones and the way it was coated one may think it's all chicken but when you bite into it you may crack a tooth. Service was good and the person who helped me made recommendations what to try when I mentioned I am coming back. Next time I will try the beef fried rice and the scrambled eggs and tomatoes. Other recommendations were organic chicken in spicy oil, sautéed pork enoki mushroom fungus and egg, country style dried bean curd with pork, sautéed eggplant with string beans, and sautéed baby bok choy pot. Spacious and a bit dim inside. If you like spicy and feeling adventurous try this place. Thank you.

    Bones!!!!

This place is awful, plain and simple. I got the hunan spicy chicken, just awful. Dry, no sauce at all, worst of all?? It had bones in it. Not just one bone, more like, every piece of chicken either had a bone on it or cartilage. Gross. If this is traditional hunan, I'll stick with the frozen food aisle at trader joes. Ya feel me

If you like spicy food, you must go here! Always parking available which is helpful. A lot of people, so the service was a little slow. Great authentic Hunan style in Sacramento area. Really enjoy the large gallon size of water container at the table you get because you will feel the spice at some point. I recommend getting the eggplant with green beans ($14.95) since it very fresh, cooked nicely, not spicy at all. The spicy flounder fish ($24.95) is indeed SPICY, will numb your mouth but does go away, the sauce does contain a lot of veggie options such as bean sprouts, wood ear mushroom, king oysters which is worth it for portion size and ingredients in the meal. Dan Dan noodles ($12.95) were alright, just mixed in with diced pickled mustard greens. Overall, the food was spicy and fresh.

Very spicy! Since it is pretty authentic Hunan cuisine, expect all their best dishes to be hot and numbing. Hunan spicy chicken: B+ Quite tasty, usually one of the popular human dishes here amongst the American palate. Tiny bites of chicken that aren't too spicy unless you also eat the peppers straight up. Boiled fish with chili: A- I always recommend this dish to people who haven't tried legit Hunan food before. Hunan style beef: B+ Tender beef, lots of cilantro. Really good over rice but was a bit spicy for me to handle. Griddle cooked chicken w/ Mexican peppers: B I think the Mexican peppers were jalapeno. This dish and some other chicken dishes have small bones attached which is common in China, I'm not quite a fan of the extra work it takes to eat and spit them out.

Friendly service, good food. This place is one of the two Hunan style Chinese food restaurants on campus, so it's quite popular, especially among Chinese students. The interior is bare minimum, tables and chairs, not much wall decor, so the food is the focus. The menu has a lot of authentic Hunan dishes. Hunan is a province in China that a little of their food is spicy, oily and heavy on taste. But you can ask them to be less oil and less salt. We ordered beef fried rice, pan fried egg with tomato soup, pork slices with mushrooms stir-fry, Mao's pork knuckles, and garlic bean sprouts. The fried rice has dark soy sauce but it's not spicy at all. The soup is very generous in portions and it has a huge piece of pan fried egg and some chopped tomatoes. The Mao's pork knuckles is good! Very soft and flavorful. The pork slices with mushrooms is a bit spicy although it's not visible. I was the least impressed with this dish. Service is good. We arrived ahead of our friend's schedule and they didn't rush us to make orders. Food also came out fast. I wouldn't say the price is super affordable for college kids, but the quality is good.

Came here twice in 2 weeks! Now my fav go-to spot for Chinese food in Davis! My favs are the cumin lamb, spicy fish soup, and pork & mushroom! Service is great and fast.

This place is a must-try if you enjoy spicy food, specifically the spicy food that numbs your mouth. My group came in on a Saturday evening, and we were quickly seated. The servers were friendly and the food came out quickly. The dining space felt very casual and cozy, which matches the fact they serve comfort food. Here are the foods I tried: -Organic Chicken in Spicy Oil: (5/5) Highly recommended if you are looking for something spicy. This food made my mouth numb, but it was still able to maintain being flavorful. The chicken is served cool, which is a nice contrast to how spicy it is. -Beef Fried Rice: (4/5) This isn't as flavorful and it was just standard beef fried rice. It is not spicy, but very filling. This dish was nice to have though especially since we were eating other spicy dishes. -Dan Dan Noodles: (4/5) These noodles had a nutty taste to them and the texture of the noodles was cooked well. Really happy with this order.

Finding this place truly feels like finding a hidden gem which makes you question how come you didn't find it sooner. Best Chinese food in town and very authentic. The portions are super generous and the flavors are just as good and balance very well. I've been here 4 times in the past month and everything is consistent every single time. There's very few restaurants that good to get me to write a review, but this one definitely deserves the praise.

Wow! Ascended to my #1 restaurant spot in Davis. Definitely more of an infrequent meal since I…read morewould consider it more on the expensive side. Average dishes are ~20 dollars. Great spicy food and friendly staff. Food (10/10) - The food here is AMAZING! Perfect balance of spice to flavor and every single bite is electric. The sichuan numbing pepper in the Chongqing soup was DELICIOUS. Mix it with some of the white rice and you have a dish all by iteself. The chicken itself had a nice chew and was very fragrant. Loved the texture and flaovr of the vermicelli; nice bounce to the noodles while soaking in all the spicy soup. My one complaint would be that they have soft bones (sign of long boiling time) so be careful of that! Also got the spicy stir-fried pork kidney... don't diss it 'til you try it. Super good, with that nice bit of chew. Take a bite of pepper, kidney, and white rice and BOOM! Perfect bite. **Recommendation: Rice is a key component for the dishes here. Without rice, everything will be too spicy, too savory, and overall too overwhelming. The rice is the thing that helps tie everything together (as it frequently is) Service (8/10) - Good service; nothing notable. Nice people and I think most of them speak Mandarin. Service and seating was also fast. Order of things to come out of the kitchen was a bit strange: soup for the chicken, rice, stir-fry, chicken. Honestly, not that big of a problem but just decided to comment. Price (8/10) - The price here is a bit on the pricier side; $54 for 2 but there were some leftovers (had to make my own rice though). Some of the dishes are more worth than others. The Chonqing chicken was $25 but you got a large bowl of chicken with soup and vermicelli. On the other hand, the stir-fry for $20 was notably padded with vegetables and I would say a majority of the dish was not the kidney. At the very least, the taste of the food compensates. However, this place is likely not a college go-to. Overall, great restaurant that I will be coming back to again (maybe with my parents LOL) or at the very least, would come with a large group as it is more fitting for family style. Highly recommend!

My kid mentioned they usually are very pack and people would dine outdoor, but I guess we arrived early so there wasn't any wait time. Ordered few items, food came out very fast and the tastes are not bad at all. Beef Fried Rice Noodles: How do you differentiate if this dish is good or not, it is about how much excessive oil that's left on the plate. The stir fried was good, not too greasy, and they marinate the meat well. Unlike other Chinese restaurants, this place's meat was good. Only they could stir fried with even higher eat to create more "wok air" Sticky Rice Stick with Brown Sugar: First time trying this dish, so not sure what to expect. But it does seem to be a dessert to me, my comment would be higher if the rice stick is more chewy. Hot & Sour Shredded Potato: This is common dish from northern part of China. The way they prepared was awesome. The potato was not starchy and the seasoning is just right. A bit greasy but this is actually my favorite dish! Shrimp and Pork with Chives Dumplings: Meat is fresh and dumpling wrap is great too. Each dumpling size is not too big and wasn't torn. Taste is okay but maybe try another filling if I visit again. I would come again to try out other things on the menu if I'm visiting my kid again.

We had the seafood tofu hotpot, shrimp wonton, garlic green bean, mongolian beef, half hainan chicken, and ny steak spaghetti to-go. Was a little busy at 7 on a holiday so we waited like ten minutes to get our order in, the guy memorized our order right as I said it lol. He confirmed and we got our soup in ten mins, ten mins for green beans and mongolian beef, another ten minutes for our chicken, then like seven for hotpot. Most disappointing was chicken, it's not hainan at all and just standard hong kong white chicken. Taste is fine and fresh but was sad. Best was the seafood hotpot AND the wonton soup. Both had great flavor and saltiness and was just sooo good. Wontons were very tasty and had a lot of meat, definitely both pork and shrimp, and soup even had little shrimp in it ifkyk. The seafood hotpot had great variety and flavor, my parents were pleased with the fish bits in it, the tofu was yummy bc it's fried tofu, the crab texture was not great maybe overcooked and I didn't like the soft cucumber but otherwise the broccoli scallop shrimp tofu fish bok choy was all great. Green beans and mongolian beef SERIOUSLY needed some wok flavor and wish the beef had black pepper because the seasoning was a bit lacking (wok flavor would be great here) and overall the vegetables were a little undercooked. They were addictive though I definitely kept going back for more. Hot tea is jasmine tea. Service was a bit lackluster but totally understandable and even though I was in a rush we were in and out by an hour and like ten minutes which worked. Ambiance wise, I didn't like how the lights are half brighter and whiter than the sun and half nicely softly lit. Tables are nice wood and a bit sticky but okay. There's random Chinese TV on the walls, very traditional lol and I think no music. Overall very pleased! Will definitely come back as much as possible to support, and highly highly recommend. I went harsh on Tim's because I was expecting perfect dishes, and even though some stuff didn't hit, everything was way beyond average.

He said he remembered one from our last visit, down one of the alleys. Walking up the street we saw a couple of advertisements. A sandwich board was on the sidewalk for Davis Noodle CIty, the exact place we were looking for. The little Noodle Shop in the alley. We weaved through the other businesses, past the dumpling restaurant, past the outdoor seating and to the front door of the Davis Noodle City Restaurant. The out door seating looked really welcoming, but it was chilly out so we opted for eating inside with the other table that was occupied. There were 3 parties eating outside when we arrived. When we walked inside we were greeted and told to take any table. We choose a table in the corner. The menus were under the glass table top, keeping it clean and easy to read. Each place setting had its own copy of the menu. After looking at the menu, remembering what was offered on the sandwich board in front, and cross referencing it with Yelp Reviews we started ordering. We opted for the Five Spice Beef Noodles, and I asked if that was a good option and she said it was their top seller. The Yelp Reviews were only ok for that dish, but I took our chances. The second dish we ordered was the Dan Dan Noodles She tried to upscale us to the one with vegetables, but that dish was a cold dish so we when for the standard Dan Dan Noodles. Both dishes came out quickly. The Dan Dan noodles were not spicy as I anticipated, which was good, I wasn't really looking for spicy. I liked the flavor and realized that if you mixed it up there is a sauce on the bottom that is really tasty. Dan Dan Noodles ($8.25 a steal) is a solid dish and I highly reccomend it. It's a great bowlful of noodles. If you are hopping for other ingredients you are out of luck, it's 100% noodles with a sprinkling of peanuts on top and a sauce on the bottom. The Five Spice Beef Noodle Soup ($12.75)was as described in the reviews. It comes with American Broccoli and carrots. The beef is so good it melts in your mouth. The broth is minimal and lacked flavor. I'd think that it's advertised as Five Spice that it would have more flavor. I don't reccomend it if you are looking for a strong flavor. If you are looking for great meat, that melts in your mouth, but is also a little fatty then you have the perfect dish. Both dishes came with fresh noodles, none of those dried and rehydrated noodles that some places serve. The noodles on both dishes were different and pleasant. I highly reccomend their fresh noodles. Customer service was good. She came to check up on us and was pleasant. Parking is street parking. And they have a bathroom on site that is clean and well stocked.

I don't know why more people don't come here. amazing food. and amazing prices. Great for a quick…read moremeal too.
